RESUMO: Durante a Guerra da Tríplice Aliança contra o Paraguai (1865-1870), houve da parte de Solano López o desejo e o investimento na criação de periódicos que servissem aos interesses da propaganda de guerra do governo paraguaio, bem como da elevação do moral das tropas. Especialmente direcionados aos soldados paraguaios, os periódicos El Centinela e Cabichuí possuíam dentre suas características o coloquialismo e o apelo constante ao humor e ao riso. Com uma linguagem que se aproximava deveras da oralidade cotidiana e incentivava a leitura em grupo, tais jornais visavam alcançar o riso de seus leitores/ouvintes através do sarcasmo, da degradação e da depreciação do inimigo. Nosso objetivo é discutir de que modo o riso, que a princípio parece ser um elemento de reduzida importância no grande espectro da guerra, pode tomar outras feições se analisado sob o prisma da história cultural. Para tal, nossa metodologia tem por mote a análise dos textos e das imagens publicados nos periódicos paraguaios, em especial, os que faziam menção aos brasileiros, de modo a buscar compreender as apropriações do “outro” realizadas pela imprensa paraguaia durante a guerra, as quais estavam inseridas em um espectro da provocação do riso e eram forjadas com intenções voltadas ao esforço de guerra.
ABSTRACT: During the War of the Triple Alliance against Paraguay (1865-1870), Solano López interest and investment in the creation of newspapers that served the interests of the Paraguayan government's war propaganda and the elevation of the morale of the troops. Specially targeted at Paraguayan soldiers, the newspapers “El Centinela” and “Cabichuí”, possessed among their characteristics colloquialism and the constant appeal to humor and laughter. With a language that approached really the daily oral and encouraging group reading, these newspapers aimed to reach the laughter of their readers / listeners through the sarcasm, degradation and depreciation of the enemy. Our aim is to discuss how the laughter, which at first seems to be a minor element in the great specter of war, may take on other features if analyzed from the perspective of cultural history. To that end, our methodology has as its motto the analysis of texts and images published in Paraguayan newspapers, especially those referring to Brazilians, in order to understand the appropriations of the "other" made by the Paraguayan press during the war, which were inserted in a spectrum of the provocation of the laughter and were forged with intentions directed to the war effort.
