A área foliar específica (SLA) tem sido relacionada a distúrbios ambientais, apresentando uma correlação positiva entre a intensidade de perturbação e a SLA da comunidade vegetal. Estes estudos, no entanto, avaliaram as respostas da comunidade vegetal como um todo, negligenciando os atributos por espécies, tais como a posição vertical no estrato florestal. Considerando a importância da SLA para entender os processos ecológicos das florestas, este estudo teve como objetivo determinar a influência do regime de perturbação na SLA de espécies de sub-bosque, cuja hipótese é que, ao contrário de comunidades como um todo, um aumento na intensidade de perturbação implica na diminuição da SLA de espécies de sub-bosque. Este estudo foi realizado em nove sub-bosque de florestas estacionais no Brasil. As espécies mais abundantes foram selecionados e suas SLA foram avaliadas. A variabilidade de SLA entre as populações em diferentes florestas foi analisada pelo teste t de Student. O SLA dos sub-bosque (SLAu) também foi comparado por uma adaptação do índice de média ponderada da comunidade. A comparação de SLA das espécies mostraram diferenças significativas entre as populações de sub-bosque sob um regime de distúrbios diferentes, mostrando um decréscimo na SLA com um aumento na intensidade de perturbação. Resultados semelhantes foram encontrados para o SLA dos sub-bosque (SLAu), corroborando nossa hipótese. A correlação entre a redução no SLA espécies e SLA do sub-bosque com um aumento na intensidade de perturbação contradiz a tendência observada na literatura para a comunidade como um todo. Este estudo destaca a importância da avaliação de SLA em sub-bosque, como um indicador do estágio sucessional das comunidades.

The specific leaf area (SLA) has been related to environmental disturbances, showing a positive correlation between the disturbances intensities and SLA in a plant community. These studies, however, assessed the responses of plant community as a whole, neglecting species attributes, such as the position in the vertical stratum of forests. Considering the importance of SLA to understand forest ecological processes, this study aimed to determine the influence of the disturbance regime on the SLA of understory species, considering that, unlike for communities as a whole, an increase in the disturbance intensity implies a decrease in SLA of understory species. This study was conducted in nine understories of seasonal forests in Brazil. The most abundant species were selected and their SLA were evaluated. The variability of SLA among populations in different forests was analyzed by Student’s t-tests. The SLA of the understories (SLAU) was also compared by an adaptation of the Community-weighted mean index. The comparison of species SLA showed significant differences among the populations of understories under different disturbance regime, showing a decrease in SLA with an increase in the disturbance intensity. Similar results were found for the SLA of understories communities (SLAU), corroborating our hypothesis. The correlation between a reduction in species SLA and in SLA of understory with an increase in disturbance intensity, contradicted the trend observed in the literature for the community as a whole. This study highlights the importance of the evaluation of SLA in understories, as an indicator of the successional stage of communities.

Tidal variation of CO2 system parameters was evaluated in the Tagus Estuary (SW Portugal) based on field observations performed in 2007 in the lower estuary under low river discharge conditions, during spring and autumn. Differences were found in the distribution patterns of environmental variables along a tidal cycle and at neap and spring tides essentially due to tide amplitude effects and tidal asymmetric behavior. A dominant east-westbound current was detected transporting CO2 enriched estuarine water offshore mainly during the ebb, and the reverse tidal current transporting more oxygenated marine water and with high chlorophyll a concentration during the flood. Distinct seasonal features were observed in terms of CO2 water properties and productivity. Regarding the tidal variability of the CO2 system parameters, besides the key processes controlling the variability, such as tidal advection and horizontal mixing of the two water masses present (estuarine and oceanic), specific biogeochemical processes emerged as playing an important role. Data obtained indicate that photosynthesis (in spring), aerobic respiration, and CaCO3 precipitation/dissolution (mainly in autumn) processes co-occur and control short-scale variations of CO2, reflecting the complexity of CO2 chemistry in the Tagus Estuary.

Se evaluó la variabilidad asociada a las mareas de los parámetros del sistema del CO2 en el estuario del Tajo (SO de Portugal) en base a observaciones de campo de 2007 en la parte baja del estuario en condiciones de poca descarga fluvial en la primavera y el otoño. Se encontraron diferencias en los patrones de distribución de las variables ambientales a lo largo del ciclo de mareas en las mareas muertas y las mareas vivas debidas esencialmente a los efectos de la amplitud y el comportamiento asimétrico de las mareas. Se detectó una corriente dominante de este a oeste que transporta mar adentro agua del estuario enriquecida en CO2 principalmente durante el reflujo y que se revierte en una corriente de marea de agua de mar más oxigenada y con alta concentración de clorofila a durante el flujo de la marea. Se observaron diferentes rasgos estacionales en términos de las propiedades del agua relacionadas con el CO2 y la productividad. Con relación a la variabilidad mareal de los parámetros del sistema del CO2, además de procesos claves que controlan la variabilidad como el transporte por las mareas y la mezcla de las dos masas de agua presentes (estuarina y oceánica), se ha visto que algunos procesos biogeoquímicos juegan también un papel muy importante en ésta. Los datos obtenidos indican que los procesos de fotosíntesis (en primavera), respiración aeróbica, y precipitación/disolución del CaCO3 (principalmente en otoño) concurren y controlan variaciones de corto plazo en el CO2, lo que refleja la complejidad de la química de este compuesto en el estuario del Tajo.

Leishmania infections induce a specific activation of host immunological response, particularly characterized by T cell expansion. Studies indicate the importance of the balance between CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, in which the first ones would have their number reduced during the healing process. Meanwhile, CD25+ T cells have been associated with the suppression of the immune response. Since the immune response has an essential role in both healing and progression of diseases, this study aimed to identify the percentage of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD16+ and CD25+ T cells in the peripheral blood of patients afflicted with American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) - before and after treatment - and healthy controls. Peripheral blood was collected and transferred to cytometry tubes containing monoclonal antibodies specific for cell surface markers CD3, CD4, CD8, CD16 e CD25. The immunophenotypic and morphometric parameters of cells were determined by flow cytometry and the results demonstrated a significant increase in the number of T CD8+ cells after treatment, suggesting a cytotoxic T cell response. An increase in CD25+ T cells in patients with active ACL and after treatment was also observed, suggesting the participation of these cells in the modulation of the exacerbated effector response.

Duffy gene (FY) codifies the transmembrane glycoprotein Duffy (gp-Fy) of 35 to 43 kDa which is moderately immunogenic. This glycoprotein is polymorphic, and constitutes the antigens of the Duffy histo-blood system which were designated receptors for chemokines and denominated DARC (Duffy antigen/receptor for chemokine). This receptor has an important role in the regulation of chemokine levels in the circulation, as it binds and adsorbs them on the surface of red cells as a reservoir. It plays a "sink" role, which can contribute to homeostasis by removing inflammatory chemokines from circulation as well as maintaining them in plasmatic levels. Chronic Chagas' cardiopathy (CCC) is the most frequent form of the disease. It is an inflammatory disease, in which infiltrated inflammatory cells play an important role in the development and progress of the infection. High chemokine levels in the plasma have been associated with the disease severity in patients with heart failure. In this context, the profile of DARC expression could play an important function as a receptor for chemokines in Chagas' disease, in patients with CCC, as it can modulate damage from this inflammatory disease.

The present study aimed at investigating the chemical composition of essential oil extracted from Brazilian propolis and the susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermides, Streptococcus pyogenes and Escherichia coli to this substance. The essential oil was obtained by steam distillation of propolis and examined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In addition, the agar diffusion method using filter paper disks was employed. Antibacterial activity was measured as equivalent diameters of inhibition zones (in millimeters) after incubation at 37º C for 24 hours. From the 26 identified constituents, β-caryophyllene (12.7%), acetophenone (12.3%) and β-farnesene (9.2%) were found to be major components. New components, namely linalool, methyl hydrocinnamate, ethyl hydrocinnamate, α-ylangene, γ-elemene and valencene, are reported for the first time to be present in propolis essential oil. This oil also exhibited antibacterial activity.
