RESUMO A região Nordeste brasileira apresenta condições climáticas favoráveis ao desenvolvimento da floricultura; contudo, a escassez hídrica e a salinização de parte de suas fontes hídricas atuam como entrave a essa atividade. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se testar os efeitos de níveis crescentes de salinidade da água de irrigação sobre as respostas quantitativas e qualitativas das espécies ornamentais Euphorbia milii e Zamioculcas zamiifolia, sob diferentes condições de luminosidade. A pesquisa foi realizada utilizando-se delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, em esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas, com cinco repetições. As plantas foram cultivadas em vasos de 7 L, passando por um período inicial de aclimatação durante 15 dias com água não salina para que o seu estabelecimento não fosse comprometido; após esse período, as plantas foram submetidas a níveis crescentes de salinidade na água de irrigação (0,5; 2,0; 3,5; e 5,0 dS m-1) sob quatro intensidades luminosas (pleno sol, 30%, 50% e 70% de sombreamento), durante 60 dias. As variáveis analisadas foram altura da planta, diâmetro do caule, biomassa da parte subterrânea e das partes aéreas, tolerância à salinidade e análise qualitativa. O sombreamento teve maior impacto nas variáveis qualitativas das plantas do que na tolerância à salinidade baseada em variáveis quantitativas. O ambiente com 30% de sombreamento é o mais propício para o cultivo da E. milii quando se utiliza água de baixa a moderada salinidade. O sombreamento reduz os danos diretos da radiação nas folhas de Z. zamiifolia e melhora a qualidade visual dessa espécie sob elevada salinidade.

ABSTRACT The Brazilian Northeast region has favorable climatic conditions for the development of floriculture; however, water scarcity and salinization of part of its water sources act as an obstacle to this activity. In this context, the objective was to test the effects of increasing levels of salinity in irrigation water on the quantitative and qualitative responses of ornamental species Euphorbia milii and Zamioculcas zamiifolia, under different light conditions. The study was carried out using an experimental design in randomized blocks, in a split-split-plot scheme, with five replications. The plants were grown in 7 L pots, undergoing an initial period of acclimatization for 15 days with non-saline water so that their establishment would not be compromised; after this period, the plants were subjected to increasing levels of salinity in the irrigation water (0.5; 2.0; 3.5; and 5.0 dS m-1) under four light intensities (full sun, 30%, 50% and 70% shading) for 60 days. The variables analyzed were plant height, stem diameter, belowground and shoot biomass, salinity tolerance and qualitative analysis. Shading had a greater impact on the qualitative variables of the plants than on the salinity tolerance based on quantitative variables. The environment with 30% shading is the most favorable for the cultivation of E. milii when using water with low to moderate salinity. Shading reduces direct radiation damage to Z. zamiifolia leaves and improves the visual quality of this species under high salinity.

Resumo Feijão-de-corda é uma cultura de grande importância socioeconômica no Nordeste brasileiro. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a aplicação de água salina em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento e no rendimento do feijão-de-corda (caupi) e alterações em características do solo. O experimento foi conduzido no campo, durante a estação seca em um delineamento em blocos casualizados com cinco tratamentos e cinco repetições. Cada unidade experimental constou de 4 linhas de plantio com 5,0 m de comprimento. Os tratamentos avaliados foram: 1. irrigação com água subterrânea com a condutividade elétrica (CEa) de 0,8 dS m-1 durante todo o ciclo da cultura; 2. água salina (5,0 dS m-1) durante todo o ciclo; 3, 4 e 5. irrigação com água salina até 22, de 23 a 42 e de 43 a 62 dias após o plantio, respectivamente, e no resto do ciclo irrigada com água subterrânea. A cobertura do solo foi avaliada por imagens digitais e utilizou-se o software ENVI para processamento e classificação. Verificou-se que o uso contínuo de água salina inibiu o crescimento das plantas, enquanto a irrigação com água salina durante a germinação e o crescimento inicial retardou o desenvolvimento, mas no último caso, a recuperação foi observada na parte final do período experimental. Para os tratamentos 2 e 3, foi verificada redução no número de vagens e na produção de sementes, em comparação com outros tratamentos. A irrigação com água salina durante 20 a 40 e 40 a 60 dias após a germinação não afetou o crescimento vegetativo e reprodutivo, sendo que a aplicação de água salina na pré-floração (tratamento 4) causou antecipação do ciclo reprodutivo.

Abstract Cowpea crop is of great importance for northeast Brazil. The objective of this work was to evaluate the application of saline water in different developing stages on plant growth and changes in soil characteristics, measured by soil coverage, and on yield of cowpea plants. The experiment was conducted under field conditions, during the dry season in a completely randomized block design with five treatments and five replications. Each experimental unit consisted of 4 lines of plants with 5.0 m long. The treatments evaluated were: 1. irrigation with groundwater with electrical conductivity (ECw) of 0.8 dS m-1 during the whole crop cycle; 2. saline water (5.0 dS m-1) during the whole crop cycle; 3, 4 and 5. saline water (5.0 dS m-1) up to 22nd, during 23rd to 42nd and from the 43rd to 62nd days after sowing, respectively, and groundwater in the remaining period. Soil coverage was evaluated by digital images using the software ENVI for image processing and classification. It was found that the continuous use of saline water inhibits plant growth, while irrigation with saline water during germination and initial growth stages caused retardation in plant development, but in this last case a recovery was observed in the final part of the experimental period. For treatments 2 and 3, a reduction was verified in the number of pods and in seed production, as compared to other treatments. Irrigation with saline water during 23 to 42 and 43 to 62 days after sowing did not affect reproductive and vegetative growth, but the saline water application in the pre-flowering (treatment 4) caused anticipation of the reproductive cycle.

A utilização de águas de moderada e alta salinidade na agricultura é uma realidade cada vez mais próxima, tendo em vista a limitada disponibilidade de águas de baixa salinidade para expansão da agricultura irrigada. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar os efeitos da aplicação de água salina sobre o crescimento e a extração de nutrientes pela cultura nos diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento de plantas de feijão-de-corda. O experimento foi conduzido em condições de campo, no delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com cinco tratamentos e cinco repetições. Os tratamentos empregados foram: T1 - água do poço (CEa de 0,8dS m-1) durante todo o ciclo; T2 - água salina (CEa de 5,0dS m-1) durante todo o ciclo; T3, T4 e T5 - água salina de zero a 22 dias após a semeadura (DAS), de 23 a 42DAS e de 43 a 62DAS, respectivamente. As plantas dos tratamentos T3, T4 e T5 foram irrigadas com água do poço nas demais fases do ciclo. Aos oito, 23, 43 e 63DAS, grupos de, no mínimo, quatro plantas foram coletadas para a determinação da produção de matéria seca e dos teores de Na, Cl, K, Ca, N, P, Fe, Cu, Zn e Mn. Foram avaliados os totais extraídos e a distribuição dos nutrientes na planta. A aplicação de água salina durante todo o ciclo (T2) e na germinação e fase inicial de crescimento (T3) inibiu e retardou, respectivamente, o crescimento da cultura. As plantas de feijão-de-corda extraíram os minerais analisados na seguinte ordem decrescente: N > K > Cl > Ca > Na > P > Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu, e a aplicação contínua de água salina (T2) reduziu a extração da maioria dos nutrientes, com exceção do Na. Os minerais Na, Cl, K, Ca, Fe e Mn permaneceram preferencialmente nas partes vegetativas, enquanto N e P foram translocados, em maiores proporções, aos frutos.

Due to the limited availability of low salinity waters, the use of water of moderate to high salinity in agriculture is a close reality in the expansion of irrigated farms. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of irrigation with saline water, applied at different development stages of cowpea plants, on growth and nutrient uptake. The experiment was set up in the field during the dry season. A completely randomized block design, with five treatments and five replications was adopted. The treatments studied were: T1 - groundwater with electrical conductivity (ECw) of 0.8dS m-1 during the whole crop cycle; T2 - saline water (ECw = 5.0dS m-1) during the whole crop cycle; T3, T4 and T5 - saline water from 0 to the 22nd day after sowing (DAS), from the 23rd to the 42nd DAS and from the 43rd to 62nd DAS, respectively. The plants subjected to T3, T4 and T5 were irrigated with groundwater in the other stages of the crop cycle. At 8, 23, 43 and 63DAS plants were collected for evaluation of plant growth, Na, Cl, K, Ca, N, P, Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn contents and distribution in plant parts. The application of saline water during the whole crop cycle (T2) and during the germination and initial plant development (T3) caused, respectively, inhibition and retardation of plant growth. Cowpea plants removed the minerals in the following decreasing sequence: N > K > Cl > Ca > Na > P > Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu, but the continuous use of saline water (T2) reduced the total uptake of all nutrients, except for Na. The minerals Na, Cl, K, Ca, Fe and Mn were distributed preferentially in the vegetative parts of the plant, while most of the N and P were translocated to the pods.
