Abstract: Growth hormone (GH) is effective in improving height in several conditions. Objective: To describe the evolution of a group of children who received GH in a tertiary center between 2012-2022. Patients and Method: Descriptive, retrospective study. We analyzed the impact on height after GH use with Z-score according to etiology, age at onset and bone age. Patients under 15 years old at baseline and receiving GH for at least 12 months, with diagnoses of GH deficiency (GHD), idiopathic short stature (ISS), small for gestational age (SGA), SHOX Haploinsufficiency (SHOX) and Turner syndrome (TS) were included. Height was expressed as Z-score for age and sex, according to NCHS curves. Results: 145 children received GH. Sixty patients were excluded due to irregular administration, incomplete data, less than 12 months of GH, change of hospital, and associated comorbidities. Seventy-three patients were analyzed, 23 GHD, 15 ISS, 20 SGA, 9 SHOX and 6 TS patients. Significant improvement in height (Z-score for age and sex) was observed in SGA (1.4 ± 0.8 gain; p < 0.001), GHD (1.1 ± 1.0; p < 0.001), ISS (1.1 ± 0.8; p < 0.001) and SHOX (0.8 ± 0.7; p = 0.007) patients. In TS, a non-statistically significant improvement was observed (0.7 ± 0.8; p = 0.085). In GHD, onset before 3 years showed a gain of 1.9 ± 1.1, vs 0.7 ± 0.6 (p = 0.083) and in ISS onset with bone age less than 9 years increased it by 1.7 ± 0.5 vs 0.5 ± 0.5 (p < 0.001). Adverse events: 27/73 (37%) headache, 18/73 (24%) lower extremity pain, 1/73 (1.5%) dizziness, 1/73 (1.5%) scoliosis, 1/73 (1.5%) epiphysiolysis and 1/73 (1.5%) craniopharyngioma recurrence. Conclusions: Children with GHD, ISS, SHOX mutation and SGA significantly improved their height, highlighting in GHD and ISS the importance of early treatment. Treatment was well tolerated in the 5 groups analyzed.

En DHC, el inicio antes de los 3 años mostró una ganancia de 1,9 ± 1,1 vs. 0,7 ± 0,6 (p = 0,083) y en TBI el inicio con edad ósea menor a 9 años la aumentó en 1,7 ± 0,5 vs. 0,5 ± 0,5 (p < 0,001). Eventos adversos: 27/73 (37%) cefalea, 18/73 (24%) dolor en extremidades inferiores, 1/73 (1,5%) mareos, 1/73 (1,5%) escoliosis, 1/73 (1,5%) epifisiolisis y 1/73 (1,5%) recidiva craneofaringioma. Conclusiones: Los niños con DHC, TBI, mutación SHOX y PEG mejoraron significativamente su estatura, destacando en DHC y TBI la importancia del tratamiento precoz. El tratamiento fue bien tolerado en los 5 grupos analizados.

ABSTRACT Since prehistoric times, indigenous communities have relied on fish as a staple source of protein for their subsistence. In most cases, fish is the sole source of income and of animal protein for the communities. Nevertheless, the documentation of fish from an ethnological perspective is rare, and biological research alone might not provide sufficient information required to manage fisheries resources. We discuss the traditional ichthyological knowledge of the Piapoco, Piaroa, Puinave, and Sikuani ethnic groups inhabiting the Matavén Forest (Vichada, Colombia). Each group has its perception regarding knowledge, at times detailed, of fish groups, their distribution, and uses. To obtain information regarding traditional ichthyological knowledge, fish were collected over one month at 31 sampling sites in different habitats along the lower Matavén River basin. The fish were identified by formal taxonomy and the informal classification by experienced fishermen of the four ethnic groups. There was consistency among the names given by the ethnic groups and formal taxonomy. The indigenous collaborators used binomial classification systems in which the organisms are grouped at family and genus levels and, to some extent, categorization depends on distribution within the aquatic habitats (i.e., rivers, streams and lagoons). The indigenous collaborators did not provide sociocultural or mythological information related to the fishes. RESUMEN Desde la prehistoria, las comunidades indígenas han dependido del pescado como fuente primaria de proteína para su subsistencia. En la mayoría de los casos, el pescado es la única fuente de ingresos y proteína animal para la comunidad. Sin embargo, el estudio de los peces desde una perspectiva etnológica no es común y la investigación científica por sí sola puede no proporcionar información suficiente para gestionar los recursos pesqueros. Se discute aquí el conocimiento ictiológico tradicional de las etnias Piapoco, Piaroa, Puinave y Sikuani que habitan la Selva de Matavén (Vichada, Colombia). Cada etnia tiene una percepción propia, a veces detallada, de los grupos de peces, su distribución y usos. Para obtener información sobre el conocimiento ictiológico tradicional, se colectaron peces durante un mes en 31 sitios de muestreo en diferentes hábitats en la cuenca baja del Río Matavén. Los peces fueron identificados usando taxonomía formal y clasificación informal por pescadores expertos de las cuatro etnias. Hubo coherencia entre los nombres dados por los grupos étnicos y el sistema de taxonomía formal. Los colaboradores indígenas usaron sistemas de clasificación binomial en los que los organismos se agrupan a nivel de familia y género y la categorización depende, hasta cierto punto, de la distribución dentro de los hábitats acuáticos (ríos, arroyos y lagunas). Resumen Las nanopartículas de silicio (SiNPs) tienen características intrínsecas que le confieren biocompatibilidad, alta estabilidad química-térmica y amplia área superficial. Esta última cualidad le permite anclar una gran cantidad de moléculas en su superficie, en las cuales se han incluido nucleótidos, proteínas y una diversidad de compuestos químicos con potencial uso en la agricultura. En este contexto, este trabajo describe brevemente aspectos fundamentales sobre las SiNPs, además de presentar una compilación de los últimos trabajos relacionados con el uso de SiNPs y su efecto en diferentes cultivos. Finalmente, se pone en perspectiva un análisis del panorama actual y las capacidades científicas relacionadas con la innovación nanotecnológica enfocadas al sector agrícola del país.

Abstract: Silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) have intrinsic properties that confer biocompatibility, high chemical-thermal stability, and a large surface area. This last allows it to anchor many molecules to its surface, in which nucleotides, proteins, and a diversity of chemical compounds with potential use in agriculture have been included. In this sense, this work describes fundamental aspects of SiNPs and presents a compilation of the latest works related to the use of SiNPs in agriculture. Finally, an overview of the status and the scientific resources related to nanotechnological innovation focused on the agricultural sector in Mexico is placed into perspective.

ABSTRACT: Parasitic intestinal infections in dogs represent a problem for human health, because a wide variety of these parasites have zoonotic potential. Therefore, proximity to pets puts us at risk. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency and risk factors (age, sex, size, breed, presence of ectoparasites and gastrointestinal disorders) of intestinal parasites in the feces of dogs attending a Veterinary Hospital in the City of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. A total of 148 fecal samples were collected from canine patients and analyzed for parasite identification and parasite load. A 12.2% (18/148) of the samples were positive to parasitic intestinal infections. The frequency of specific infections was an 8.1% of Cryptosporidium sp., followed by a 2.7% of Cystoisospora sp., and 1.4% of Toxascaris leonina. A statistical significance was identified between the presence of intestinal parasites and mongrel breed. The predominance of protozoa shows the importance of diagnosis prior to treatment with anthelminthic drugs, since preventive antiparasitic protocols are commonly used, although these particular parasites are out of the spectrum of those drugs. Cryptosporidium spp. have zoonotic potential, particularly in immunocompromised patients, and there are few or no treatment options.

Resumo: La cuenca del río Amazonas alberga la ictiofauna dulceacuícola más diversa del mundo, sin embargo, grandes áreas de la cuenca permanecen inexploradas. Este es el caso de los afluentes de la parte alta del río Negro, especialmente los sistemas que drenan el territorio colombiano. A continuación, presentamos un listado de 224 especies derivadas del análisis de especímenes recolectados en la región de Mitú, cuenca media del río Vaupés (Departamento de Vaupés, Colombia). De las especies identificadas, 10 especies se registran en Colombia por primera vez y 26 especies para la Amazonía colombiana. El número de especies que presentamos aquí comprende casi un tercio de las especies conocidas para la Amazonía colombiana y casi una décima parte del total de las conocidas para la gran cuenca del Amazonas. Los órdenes más diversos fueron Characiformes (120 especies) y Siluriformes (65 especies), y los seis órdenes restantes comprendieron menos del 20% del total de especies. El área de estudio comprende sistemas de aguas negras que se consideran ambientes poco productivos por sus bajos contenidos de nutrientes. Discutimos aquí algunos aspectos ecológicos que podrían explicar cómo esta ictiofauna tan diversa tiene su origen y es mantenida en estos sistemas poco productivos. La información derivada del presente estudio adiciona nuevos registros de especies de peces para Colombia, y complementa la información derivada de los estudios realizados a la fecha en la Amazonía colombiana.

Abstract: The Amazon River basin hosts the most diverse freshwater ichthyofauna in the world, and yet huge areas of the basin remain unexplored. This is the case for the upper tributaries of the rio Negro, especially those draining the Colombian territory. Here we present a list of 224 species derived from the examination of specimens collected in the Mitú region (Vaupés Department, Colombia), the middle basin of the río Vaupés. Of the species identified in our study, 10 species are recorded from Colombia for the first time, and 26 species are newly recorded from the Colombian Amazon. The number of species we present here comprise almost one-third of the known species diversity of the Colombian Amazon and nearly a tenth of the total number of those known across the entirety of the Amazon basin. The most diverse orders were Characiformes (120 species) and Siluriformes (65 species), and the remaining six orders comprised less than 20% of total species. The study area comprised blackwater systems, which are considered to be nutrient-poor environments. We discuss some ecological aspects that might explain how this highly diverse ichthyofauna originates and is maintain in less productive systems. The list presented here adds an important number of new records and complements the information derived from previous studies, carried out thus far with regards to the fish fauna of the Colombian Amazon.

Abstract The Colombian Amazon region is part of the Neotropical rainforest (humid forest biome) covering an area of 483,163 km2 and includes tributaries of both the Amazon and Orinoco River basins. The aquatic ecosystems found there include: rivers and alluvial plains originating in Andean headwaters, on eroded soils of tropical forests in the lowlands, and Guiana Shield formations, comprising a dense fluvial drainage network in the lowlands, with Paleogene/Neogene geological formations (terra firme streams in higher places that don’t usually flood) and Paleozoic (shield streams); and Andean and Guiana Shield streams above 200–250 m a.s.l. We present here an exhaustive compilation of published information, supported by fish collections, consisting of a list of 1104 species distributed in 375 genera, 53 families, and 16 orders. We include occurrence data of these species in each sub-basin. The presence/absence species matrix was analyzed using a dendrogram and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis to identify patterns of similarity between basins and sub-basins. We evaluated species composition between basins and among the different geological origins using PERMANOVA. The dendrogram shows co-occurrences of 404 species in the two basins. It also shows two clear groupings of the sub-basins of the Amazon (except Guainía-Negro drainages) and those of the Orinoco. Within the Amazon Basin, there are two nodes according to the geological origin: systems of Andean origin and those of the lowlands. The dendrogram results are consistent with the NMDS analysis, which shows a clear grouping according to the connectivity of the basins; the Guainía-Negro is included in the Amazon basin. Species distribution patterns were supported by the PERMANOVA, and differed significantly between basins (F = 4.3, R = 0.26, P = 0.003) and geological origin (F = 3.6, R = 0.23, P = 0.003). The number of species in this study represents almost a fifth of the ichthyofauna of the Neotropics and about a third of that of the Amazon River basin; clearly supporting Colombia’s status among the countries with the greatest diversity of freshwater fish species of the planet. Resumo La región de la Amazonía colombiana hace parte del bosque húmero neotropical (bioma de selva húmeda) abarcando un área de 483.163 km2 e incluye afluentes de las cuencas del Amazonas y Orinoco. Los ecosistemas acuáticos encontrados allí incluyen: ríos y llanuras aluviales, originándose en cabeceras andinas, en suelos erosionados de bosques tropicales en tierras bajas y en formaciones de escudos; conformando una densa red fluvial en tierras bajas con formaciones geológicas paleógenas-neógenas (arroyos de terra firme en sitios elevados que usualmente no se inundan) y paleozoicas (arroyos de escudo); y arroyos andinos y del escudo Guayanés por encima de 200–250 m s.n.m. Presentamos aquí una recopilación exhaustiva de información publicada, sustentada por colecciones ictiológicas, consistiendo en una lista de 1104 especies distribuidas en 375 géneros, 53 familias y 16 órdenes. Incluimos datos de estas especies en cada subcuenca. La matriz de presencia/ausencia de especies fue analizada usando un dendrograma y un análisis de escalamiento multidimensional no métrico (NMDS) para identificar patrones de similitud entre cuencas y subcuencas. Se evaluó la composición de especies entre cuencas y entre los diferentes orígenes geológicos usando PERMANOVA. El dendrograma refleja coocurrencia de 404 especies en las dos cuencas. También muestra dos agrupaciones claras de las subcuencas del Amazonas (excepto Guainía-Negro) y las del Orinoco. Dentro de la cuenca amazónica existen dos nodos según el origen geológico: los sistemas de origen andino y los de tierras bajas. Los resultados del dendrograma son consistentes con el análisis NMDS, el cual muestra una clara agrupación según la conectividad de las cuencas; el Guainía-Negro está incluido en la cuenca del Amazonas. Los patrones de distribución de especies fueron respaldados por el PERMANOVA y difirieron significativamente entre cuencas (F = 4.3, R = 0.26, P = 0.003) y origen geológico (F = 3.6, R = 0.23, P = 0.003). El número de especies en este estudio representa casi la quinta parte de la ictiofauna del Neotrópico y alrededor de un tercio de la de la cuenca del río Amazonas; soportando el estatus de Colombia entre los países con mayor diversidad de especies de peces de agua dulce del planeta. Resumen El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la presencia del virus del síndrome reproductivo y respiratorio porcino genotipo 2 (VSRRP-2) en Baja California (Baja), así como la estandarización de la técnica qRT-PCR. Se realizó un estudio transversal de 2016 a 2017 en granjas de Baja. Se obtuvieron 97 muestras de sangre de verracos y cerdas clínicamente sanos y no vacunados. Se diseñaron y estandarizaron iniciadores con el fin de realizar pruebas qRT-PCR a partir de la capa leucocitaria. Todos los resultados positivos fueron confirmados por estudios de secuenciación. Se encontró que el 9.3 % de las muestras fueron positivas. Las muestras positivas provinieron del 66.6 % de las regiones muestreadas. Este estudio demuestra la presencia de VSRRP-2 en Baja, por lo tanto, es necesario realizar estudios epidemiológicos para identificar la magnitud del problema y establecer medidas preventivas y de control.

Abstract The objective of this study was to assess the presence of genotype 2 porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV-2) in Baja California (Baja), as well as the standardization of the qRT-PCR technique. A cross-sectional study was conducted from 2016 to 2017 in farms from Baja. It was obtained 97 blood samples from clinically healthy, not-vaccinated boars and sows. Primers were designed and standardize, in order to perform qRT-PCR tests from the buffy coat. Every positive results were confirmed by sequence studies. It was found that 9.3 % of the samples were positive. The positive samples came from 66.6 % of the sampled regions. This study demonstrates the presence of PRRSV-2 in Baja, therefore, it is necessary to conduct epidemiological studies in order to identify the magnitude of the problem and to establish preventive and control measures.

Resumen Las sabanas inundables son un bioma importante para la diversidad y funcionalidad de las comunidades ícticas del Orinoco. Estas sabanas tienen gran conectividad y diversidad ecosistémica, incluida la conformación de diferentes tipos de humedales, por lo que comprender la forma en que sus comunidades de peces se estructuran en los diversos ambientes es clave para la conservación biológica. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la diversidad, la composición y la estructura de los ensamblajes ícticos en los humedales, caños del sistema río-planicie de inundación y esteros del sistema periférico en la sabana inundable del río Ariporo (Casanare). Para ello se analizaron siete sitios distribuidos en ambos tipos de humedales muestreados durante dos periodos hidrométricos en aguas en descenso y aguas bajas. Los peces se recolectaron utilizando una red de arrastre de 10 m x 1,5 m y ojo de malla de 2 mm. La estructura y diversidad de los ensamblajes ícticos se analizaron mediante los modelos de distribución-abundancia, los números de Hill, el análisis de escalamiento multidimensional no-métrico (EMNM) y el índice de especies indicadoras (IndVal). Los resultados indicaron que los caños albergan la mayor riqueza y diversidad de especies. Asimismo, el EMNM (stress=0,00009) evidenció la conformación de dos ensamblajes ícticos según el tipo de humedal. En el ensamblaje íctico de caños, se registraron especies especialistas como indicadoras a diferencia de los esteros. Se sugiere que los caños albergan comunidades más complejas y diversas, en tanto que los esteros son dominados por especies generalistas.

Abstract Flooded savannas are an important biome for the functionality and diversity of the Orinoco fish communities. These savannas have high connectivity and ecosystemic diversity including the configuration of different types of wetlands. Understanding how fish communities are structured is critical for biological conservation. Here we aimed at determining the diversity, composition, and structure of fish assemblages in the caños of the river-floodplain complex and in the esteros in the peripheral system of the Ariporo River flooded savanna in Casanare (Colombia). We sampled seven sites (four in caños and three in esteros) during two hydrometric seasons in descending and low waters. In each site, we collected fish with a 10 x 1.5 m seine net (2 mm mesh). We analyzed the structure and diversity of fish communities using distribution-abundance models, Hill numbers, non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis (NMDS), and the indicator species index (IndVal). Our results evidenced that caños had the highest richness and species diversity. The NMDS analysis (stress=0.00009) showed two fish assemblages depending on the wetland type. In caño fish assemblages we registered specialist indicator species, but not in the esteros. These results suggest that caños have more complex and diverse fish assemblages while esteros assemblages are dominated by generalist species.

Digestive tract primary melanoma is uncommon. However, metastatic lesions are more frequent and occur mainly in the small intestine. We report a 69-year-old male patient who consulted for a hyperpigmented skin lesion on the left thigh associated with multiple subcutaneous nodules. The biopsy was compatible with melanoma and PET/CT was positive for metastases in nodules and in an inguinal lymph node. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy with pembrolizumab were performed with good response, associated with posterior resection of the inguinal lymph node and melanocytic lesions. At three years of follow-up, a new hypermetabolic focus in the proximal jejunum was found in a control PET/CT. An endoscopic biopsy confirmed that it was a recurrence of the melanoma. Laparoscopic resection with primary anastomosis was performed with good clinical evolution. The definitive biopsy showed a melanoma metastasis with two of three lymph nodes positive for metastasis and a non-mutated BRAF gene. In conclusion, a single intestinal recurrence of melanoma is rare and requires an active search, since it can be resected using minimally invasive techniques.

Abstract Hyperkalemia is a common electrical abnormality that can worsen cardiac arrhythmias and significantly increase mortality. The progressive aging of the population added to the higher incidence of entities such as diabetes mellitus (DM), cardiovascular diseases (CVD) or chronic kidney disease (CVD) as well as the increasing use of renin angiotensin aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASi) has caused make it a frequent problem that clinicians have to face in their day-to-day life. We present a case of a patient admitted to the San Juan de Alicante Home Hospitalization Unit who presented a sudden onset and nonspecific clinical picture due to severe hyperkalemia. After prior stabilization in the emergency department, a combination of treatment with RAASi drugs, loop diuretics and cation exchange resins (patiromer) was performed, presenting an improvement in symptoms and control of potassium levels.

Resumen La hiperpotasemia es una anomalía eléctrica común que puede empeorar arritmias cardíacas y aumentar significativamente la mortalidad. El envejecimiento progresivo de la población sumado a la mayor incidencia de entidades como la diabetes mellitus (DM), enfermedades cardiovasculares (ECV) o enfermedad renal crónica (ECV) así como el creciente uso de inhibidores del sistema renina angiotensina aldosterona (RAASi) ha provocado que sea un problema frecuente al que tenga que enfrentarse el clínico en su día a día. Presentamos un caso de un paciente ingresado a cargo de la Unidad de Hospitalización a Domicilio de San Juan de Alicante que presentaba un cuadro de inicio súbito y clínica inespecífica debido a una hiperpotasemia grave. Tras estabilización previa en el servicio de urgencias, se realizó́ una combinación de tratamiento con fármacos RAASi, diuréticos de asa y resinas de intercambio catiónico (patiromero) presentando una mejoría de la sintomatología y control de la potasemia.

Abstract The bovine respiratory complex (BRC) is the leading cause of disease and death in beef cattle worldwide. It is a multifactorial infectious syndrome caused by different viruses and bacteria that reduce the productive efficiency and cause economic losses. In Mexico, BRC has been reported in all regions where cattle are fattened; however, these reports lack information on the presence of bovine respiratory coronavirus (BCV). This makes it necessary to have reliable and accurate diagnostic tools for detecting the presence of BCV in beef cattle fattened in Mexico, in order to propose appropriate sanitary measures for their clinical management. In this work, a real-time-PCR molecular diagnostic platform (rt-PCR) was developed to amplify a fragment of the BCV S protein in nasal exudate samples. When applying the rt-PCR platform for BCV in seemingly healthy beef cattle with signs of respiratory disease associated to BRC, 19/50 (38 %) were found to be positive, confirming the presence of this virus in the cattle of the region. The results of this work constitute the first report on the presence of the BCV associated to the BRC in the cattle region of northwestern Mexico and establish the bases for future research about the role that this virus plays in the presentation of the pathology of the BRC in beef cattle exploitation systems in this region and across the country.

Resumen El complejo respiratorio bovino (CRB) es la principal causa de enfermedad y muerte en el ganado de engorda en todo el mundo. Es un síndrome infeccioso multifactorial provocado por distintos virus y bacterias que disminuyen la eficiencia productiva y ocasionan pérdidas económicas. En México, el CRB se ha reportado en todas las regiones donde se engorda ganado; sin embargo, esos reportes carecen de información sobre la presencia del coronavirus respiratorio bovino (CVB), haciendo necesario contar con herramientas de diagnóstico confiables y precisas para detectar la presencia de CVB en el ganado que se engorda en México, para proponer las medidas sanitarias apropiadas para su manejo clínico. En este trabajo, se desarrolló una plataforma de diagnóstico molecular de PCR en tiempo real (rt-PCR) que amplifica un fragmento de la proteína S del CVB en muestras de exudado nasal. Al aplicar la plataforma rt-PCR para CVB en bovinos de engorda en aparente estado de salud y con signos de enfermedad respiratoria asociados a CRB se encontró que 19/50 (38 %) resultaron positivos, confirmando la presencia de ese virus en el ganado de la región. Los resultados de este trabajo significan el primer reporte sobre la presencia del CVB asociado al CRB en la región ganadera del noroeste de México y sienta las bases para futuras investigaciones sobre papel que juega este virus en la presentación de la patología del CRB en los sistemas de explotación de bovinos de engorda en nuestra región y el país.

RESUMEN Entre 2006 y 2007 se realizaron muestreos mensuales de las capturas de peces obtenidas con chinchorro de arrastre tradicional, donde se registró una porción importante de la ictiofauna caribeña de la plataforma continentalː 10 114 individuos pertenecientes a 16 familias y 31 especies. Las familias Carangidae y Sciaenidae se mencionan entre las de mayor representación del Caribe, mientras que la especie más abundante fue Oligoplites saurus. Del listado de especies, siete se encuentran incluidas en el Libro Rojo de Peces Marinos de Colombia; cinco entre las categorías de En Peligro Crítico (CR) y Vulnerable (VU), y dos en la categoría Casi Amenazada (NT). Estos resultados son un soporte técnico y científico para la toma de decisiones, cumpliendo así con la misión y gestión de conservación para la cual ha sido creada esta área protegida.

ABSTRACT Monthly samplings of fish catches obtained by traditional beach seine were carried out between 2006 and 2007, recording an important portion of the Caribbean ichthyofauna of the continental shelf:10 114 individuals belonging to 16 families and 31 species. The families Carangidae and Sciaenidae are mentioned among the most widely represented in the Caribbean, while the most abundant species was Oligoplites saurus. From the list of species, seven are included in the Red Book of Marine Fishes of Colombia; five between the categories Critically Endangered (CR) and Vulnerable (VU), and two in the category Near Threatened (NT). These results are a technical and scientific input for decision making, to fulfill the conservation and management mission which was the aim when this protected area was created.

Abstract The community of Ojos Negros is located in the municipality of Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. Since 1930, local residents make a greatly appreciated handmade cheese in the region; however, the raw milk and cheese have never been analyzed for the microbiological quality and hygiene of the final product. The objective of this study was to evaluate the microbiological, physical and chemical quality of the raw milk used to produce cheese, and the artisanal cheese produced in the 22 individual production units. Samples of cheese and milk were collected from dairy production units in order to perform microbiological tests. There were physical and chemical determinations of protein, fat and lactose, using a LACTOSCAN-S analyzer. The results of milk analysis showed protein (33.11 g/L) and fat (39.89 g/L) contents within the parameters of the regulations. For the microbiological quality of milk, the results of the aerobic mesophilic count showed a 64 % compliance with the regulations; however, the same aerobic mesophilic count in the cheese samples resulted in only 4 % compliance. No Salmonella spp. or Listeria monocytogenes were detected in any of the tested milk or cheese samples. Good sanitation and manufacturing practices should be incorporated in order to enhance the sanitary quality and hygiene standards for the production of artisanal cheese in the community of Ojos Negros.

Resumen La comunidad de Ojos Negros está ubicada en el municipio de Ensenada Baja California, México. Desde 1930, los residentes locales fabrican un queso artesanal muy apreciado en la región; sin embargo, la leche cruda y el queso nunca han sido analizados por la calidad microbiológica y de higiene del producto final. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la calidad microbiológica, física y química de la leche cruda utilizada para producir queso, y el queso artesanal producido en las 22 unidades de producción individuales. Se tomaron muestras de queso y leche de las unidades de producción para realizar pruebas microbiológicas. Se realizaron determinaciones físicas y químicas de proteínas, grasas y lactosa utilizando un analizador LACTOSCAN-S. Los resultados del análisis de la leche mostraron un contenido de proteína (33.11 g/L) y grasa (39.89 g/L) dentro de los parámetros de la normatividad. Para la calidad microbiológica de la leche, los resultados del recuento de mesófilos aeróbicos mostraron un cumplimiento del 64 % con las regulaciones; sin embargo, el mismo conteo de mesófilos aeróbicos en las muestras de queso resultó en solo el 4 % de cumplimiento con las regulaciones. No hubo detección de Salmonella spp. o Listeria monocytogenes en cualquiera de las muestras de leche o de queso probadas. Se deben incorporar buenas prácticas sanitarias y de fabricación para mejorar la calidad sanitaria y de higiene para la producción de queso artesanal en la comunidad de Ojos Negros.

ABSTRACT Catfishes of the family Astroblepidae form a group composed by 82 valid species of the genus Astroblepus inhabiting high-gradient streams and rivers throughout tropical portions of the Andean Cordillera. Little has been advanced in the systematics and biodiversity of astroblepids other than an unpublished thesis, a single regional multilocus study and isolated species descriptions. Here, we examined 208 specimens of Astroblepus that apparently belong to 16 valid species from several piedmont rivers from northern Colombia to southern Peru. Using three single-locus approaches for species delimitation in combination with a species tree analysis estimated from three mitochondrial genes, we identified a total of 25 well-delimited lineages including eight valid and 17 potential undescribed species distributed in two monophyletic groups: the Central Andes Clade, which contains 14 lineages from piedmont rivers of the Peruvian Amazon, and the Northern Andes Clade with 11 lineages from trans- and cis-Andean rivers of Colombia and Ecuador, including the Orinoco, Amazon, and Magdalena-Cauca basins and Pacific coastal drainages. Results of species delimitation methods highlight several taxonomical incongruences in recently described species denoting potential synonymies.

RESUMEN Los bagres de la familia Astroblepidae son un grupo compuesto por 82 especies válidas del género Astroblepus que habitan quebradas y ríos de alto gradiente a través de la porcion tropical en la Cordillera de los Andes. Poco se ha avanzado en la sistemática y biodiversidad de los astroblepidos aparte de una tesis no publicada, un único estudio multilocus regional y descripciones aisladas de especies. Aquí, examinamos 208 especímenes de Astroblepus que aparentemente pertenecen a 16 especies válidas provenientes de ríos de pie de monte de la cordillera de los Andes, desde el norte de Colombia hasta el sur de Perú. Utilizando tres metodologías de delimitación de especies para un único locus en combinación con análisis de un árbol de especies a partir de tres genes mitocondriales, identificamos un total de 25 linajes bien definidos que incluyen ocho especies válidas y 17 potenciales especies no descritas distribuidas en dos grupos monofiléticos: un clado de los andes centrales, que contiene 14 especies de los ríos de pie de monte de la Amazonía peruana y un clado de los andes del norte con 11 especies de los ríos trans y cisandinos de Colombia y Ecuador, incluyendo las cuencas del Orinoco, Amazonas y Magdalena-Cauca así como drenajes costeros del Pacífico. Los resultados de los métodos de delimitación de especies destacan varias incongruencias taxonómicas en especies recientemente descritas que denotan posibles sinonimias.
