The study presents CeO2 particles synthesized by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method using different synthesis times for the analysis of sensitivity to carbon monoxide gas, aiming at its application as a sensor material to prevent poisoning caused by this highly toxic gas. Structural, morphological and spectroscopic and electrical behaviors were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Rietveld refinement, transmission electronic microscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy, optoelectronic characterization chamber and FT-IR. The samples presented fluorite-type cubic structures, increase in crystallinity and particle size with the variation synthesis time from 5 to 8 minutes. From the micrographs it was observed that the nanoparticles initially were spherical with a surface domain (200), and the synthesis time made them cubic/polyhedral with a surface (111), showing differences in defects and influencing in its properties. The sample synthesized at 8 minutes showed the best result with response and recovery time of 16 and 2 seconds, respectively, at 390 °C, therefore promising for the fabrication of CO gas selective sensing device. This study aims at assessing the degree of susceptibility to intergranular corrosion of the UNS S31803 duplex stainless steel and the 0.4% Mo austenitic stainless steel through the double-loop electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (DL-EPR) test. Both steels were subjected to isothermal treatments at 650ºC and 900ºC in order to compare the effect of temperature on the respective degrees of sensitization. It was observed that the 0.4% Mo austenitic stainless steel presented a higher degree of sensitization and, consequently, a greater susceptibility to the intergranular corrosion process when compared to the UNS S31803 duplex stainless steel in the two temperatures studied. It was also observed that, for both steels, the heat treatment at 900ºC resulted in a higher degree of sensitization when compared to the heat treatment at 650ºC.

A formação em Medicina é densa e com grandes responsabilidades. Contato com a morte, ambiente competitivo, privação de lazer e sensação de insegurança técnica funcionam como um retrato da formação. Objetiva-se descrever os diferentes processos que interferem no sofrimento psíquico discente em todas as escolas médicas do Ceará. O estudo acompanhou, do segundo ao sexto ano, 40 alunos da Universidade Estadual do Ceará (Uece) e 20% dos demais estudantes com ingresso comum em todas as outras escolas cearenses. Utilizou-se o Self-Report Questionnaire-20 para avaliar transtornos mentais leves (TML) . A maior prevalência de suspeitos de portar TML foi de 53,3% na Uece, com 20% dos alunos procurando ajuda psicológica. Nas outras escolas, 48,5% foram suspeitos e 18,2% procuraram ajuda. Depressão, insônia, problema pessoal, privação de lazer e insegurança técnica atuaram sobre o sofrimento. A formação médica representa um período de dúvidas, receios e tensões. Os currículos p recisam considerar como os estudantes lidam com a formação. As escolas devem tornar seus serviços de apoio mais integrados à execução dos currículos, focando os dois últimos anos, oferecendo suporte às tensões pessoais e familiares.

Medical training is an intense process that brings considerable responsibilities. Contact with death, a competitive environment, deprivation of leisure and a sense of technical insecurity are typical characteristics of the student's experience. This study aims to describe the different processes that affect psychological distress among students at all the medical schools in Ceará state. The study followed 40 second to sixth year students from the State University of Ceará (UECE) and 20% of the other students admitted by regular means to the other schools in Ceará. The Self-Report Questionnaire-20 was used to evaluate slight mental disorders (SMD) . Suspected cases of SMD were most prevalent at UECE, 53.3% of the students, and 20% had sought psychological help. In the other schools, there were 48.5% suspected cases, and 18.2% who had sought help. Psychological suffering was found to be engaged by depression, insomnia, personal problems, deprivation of leisure and technical insecurity. Medical education is a period of doubts, fears and tensions. The curricula need to consider how students deal with their own training. Schools should improve the integration between their support services and the implementation of the curricula, focusing on the last two years of study, offering support for personal and family tensions.

OBJETIVO: Para avaliar a ocorrência de efeitos adversos oculares dos antipsicóticos, buscamos avaliar a pressão intra-ocular em pacientes esquizofrênicos tratados com medicações psiquiátricas. MÉTODOS: Vinte e oito pacientes tratados ambulatorialmente com diagnóstico de esquizofrenia segundo o DSM-IV que preencheram os critérios de inclusão e exclusão foram submetidos a uma avaliação oftalmológica para pesquisa de alterações oculares que incluiu a medida da pressão intra-ocular com tonometria de aplanação de Goldmann. RESULTADOS: Pressão intra-ocular aumentada foi encontrada em 3 pacientes (11%). Anormalidade na escavação do disco óptico foi observada em apenas um paciente com assimetria de escavação de 0,4. Todos esses quatro pacientes estavam usando apenas ziprasidona. CONCLUSÕES: Pacientes em uso de ziprasidona apresentaram anormalidades na pressão intra-ocular e na escavação do disco óptico.

PURPOSE: In order to assess the occurrence of adverse ocular effects of antipsychotic drugs, we sought to evaluate intraocular pressure of schizophrenic patients treated with psychiatric medications. METHODS: Twenty-eight outpatients with DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia who met both the inclusion and exclusion criteria were submitted to an ophthalmic evaluation for ocular abnormalities which included intraocular pressure measurement with Goldmann applanation tonometry. RESULTS: Raised intraocular pressure was found in three patients (11%). Abnormality in cup-disc ratio was seen in only one patient with cup-disc ratio asymmetry of 0.4. All these four patients were taking only ziprasidone. CONCLUSIONS: Patients using ziprasidone were found to have abnormalities in both intraocular pressure and cup-disc ratio.

OBJETIVO: Os antipsicóticos típicos, principalmente as fenotiazinas, têm sido associados à formação de catarata há mais de quarenta anos. Nos últimos anos, tem existido um questionamento acerca do potencial dos antipsicóticos atípicos de induzir essa patologia lenticular. Neste estudo, buscamos determinar a taxa de catarata e de outros efeitos oculares adversos em pacientes em uso de antipsicóticos a longo prazo. MÉTODO: Oitenta pacientes tratados ambulatorialmente com diagnóstico de esquizofrenia segundo o DSM-IV, de dois centros, que preencheram os critérios de inclusão pré determinados foram submetidos a uma avaliação oftalmológica para pesquisa de alterações oculares com ênfase no cristalino e na córnea. Eles foram divididos em dois grupos: o grupo 1 (n = 52) era formado por pacientes que tinham usado predominantemente antipsicóticos típicos por pelo menos dois anos e o grupo 2 (n = 28) por pacientes que tinham usado predominantemente antipsicóticos atípicos por pelo menos dois anos. RESULTADOS: Catarata foi encontrada em 26 pacientes (33%) com predomínio de catarata capsular anterior. A taxa de catarata entre os pacientes do grupo 1 (40%) foi maior do que naqueles do grupo 2 (18%). A acuidade visual estava reduzida em 21 pacientes (26%). Não foram encontradas alterações nem na córnea nem na retina. CONCLUSÕES: Pessoas em uso de antipsicóticos devem ser submetidas à avaliação oftalmológica periódica.

OBJECTIVE: Typical antipsychotic drugs, mainly phenothiazines, have been associated with cataract formation for over forty years. Recently, there has been a concern about atypical antipsychotic drugs' potential for inducing this lenticular pathology. Accordingly, we sought to determine the cataract rate and other ocular side effects in patients on long-term therapy with antipsychotic drugs. METHOD: Eighty outpatients with DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia from two settings who met pre determined inclusion criteria were submitted to an ophthalmological evaluation for ocular abnormalities with emphasis in the lens and cornea. They were divided into two groups: group 1 (n = 52) comprised patients who had been predominantly on typical antipsychotics for at least two years and group 2 (n = 28) patients who had been predominantly on atypical antipsychotics for at least two years. RESULTS: Cataract was found in 26 patients (33%) with predominance of anterior capsular cataract. The cataract rate among patients from group 1 (40%) was higher than among those from group 2 (18%). Visual acuity was reduced in 21 patients (26%). No changes were observed neither in the cornea nor in the retina. CONCLUSIONS: Patients using antipsychotic drugs should be submitted to a periodic ophthalmological evaluation.
