ABSTRACT Managing fertile eggs and minimizing seasonal impacts is crucial in poultry farming. This study evaluated the effects of the storage time of fertile eggs, broiler breeder strain, and age on hatchability and first-week broiler performance. Twelve treatments were carried out in a factorial arrangement with two broiler breeder strains (Cobb MV and Ross 308AP), two breeder age intervals (between 30-40 weeks and between 50-60 weeks), and three egg storage times (4, 7 and 9 days). The Ross 308AP strain showed the highest hatchability (91.74%) at 30-40 weeks, while Cobb MV had the greatest weight gain (162.75g) from days 1 to 7 at 50-60 weeks. Longer egg storage affected weight gain at 7 days for Cobb MV. Nine-day storage reduced chick weight (45.46g) from breeders aged 50-60 weeks. Lower first-stage embryonic mortality was observed in Ross 308 AP (3.83%) in breeders aged 30-40 weeks (4.13%), and in eggs stored for 4 days (4.01%). The Ross 308AP had the greatest percentage of infertile eggs (10.25%), and breeders aged 50-60 weeks showed greater percentages of infertility (10.14%). The Cobb MV had lower second-stage embryonic mortality but higher percentages of discarded chicks. RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da inclusão de dois acidificantes (com diferentes níveis de proteção) sobre o potencial de acidificação in vitro, a digestibilidade aparente do trato total dos nutrientes da dieta, os metabólitos sanguíneos e o ganho médio diário de leitões. Foram avaliados dois acidificantes comerciais (AC1 e AC2). O potencial de acidificação dos acidificantes adicionados às dietas foi testado quanto à capacidade tamponante e ao pH inicial in vitro. Para avaliação da digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes da dieta, dos metabólitos sanguíneos e do ganho médio diário, foram realizados dois experimentos. O acidificante AC2 teve maior efeito na redução inicial do pH e menor taxa linear de tamponamento linear da dieta. O uso de acidificantes não melhorou a digestibilidade dos nutrientes das dietas e não teve efeito sobre as concentrações dos metabólitos sanguíneos de ureia, proteína total, albumina, globulina e lactato. Embora a inclusão de acidificantes nas dietas não tenha afetado a digestibilidade aparente do trato total dos nutrientes da dieta, a inclusão do acidificante AC2 em diferentes níveis apresentou efeito quadrático negativo no ganho médio diário, com o melhor nível de inclusão sendo 0,26%.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of inclusion of two acidifiers blend (with different protection levels) on the acidification potential in vitro, apparent total tract digestibility of diet nutrients, blood metabolites, and average daily gain of nursery piglets. Two commercial acidifiers blend additives (AC1 and AC2) were evaluated. The acidification potential of the two acidifiers blend added to the diet were tested by buffering capacity and initial pH in vitro. For the evaluation of apparent digestibility of diet nutrients, blood metabolites and average daily gain, two experiments were carried out. The AC2 acidifier had a greater effect on the initial reduction in pH and a lower linear buffering rate of the diet. The use of acidifiers did not improve the nutrient digestibility of the diets and had no effect on the blood metabolite concentrations of urea, total protein, albumin, globulin, and lactate. Although the inclusion of acidifiers in the diets did not affect the apparent total tract digestibility of the diet nutrients the inclusion of the AC2 acidifier at different levels showed a negative quadratic effect on the average daily gain, with the best inclusion level being 0.26%.

RESUMO A utilização de antimicrobianos na produção animal provoca seleção de bactérias resistentes. O objetivo do estudo foi comparar a utilização de alternativas associadas à antibioticoterapia preventiva na alimentação de suínos nas fases de recria e de terminação. Foram utilizados 1.045 animais de 60 a 190 dias de idade, submetidos a seis tratamentos com 16 repetições, como segue: 1) sem antibióticos; 2) com antibióticos; 3) prebióticos; 4) probióticos; 5) óleos essenciais; e 6) ácidos orgânicos. Os animais foram pesados, e a história clínica foi registrada, incluindo mortalidade e diarreia. No abatedouro, foram investigados índices de pneumonia e úlceras gástricas. O custo de cada tratamento foi discutido. Não houve diferença entre os tratamentos (P>0,05) em relação à taxa de conversão alimentar (2,64 ± 0,03), ao ganho de peso médio geral (107,06 ± 0,9kg), ao ganho de peso médio diário (856,49 ± 7,7g) e ao peso de carcaça (92,4 ± 0,7kg). A aplicação de medicamentos injetáveis em animais com quadro clínico representou US$ 0,56/intervenção, sem diferença entre os tratamentos (P>0,05). Além disso, independentemente do tratamento, foi observada alta frequência de pneumonia (>0,90). Não foi observada diferença para o grau de úlcera gástrica nem na consistência das fezes (P>0,05). A utilização de antibioticoterapia e de alternativas aos antibióticos na ração não trouxe benefícios aos desempenhos zootécnico e sanitário dos animais.

ABSTRACT The utilization of antimicrobials in animal production, causes selection of resistant bacteria. The objective of this study was to compare the utilization of alternatives in association with preventive antibiotic therapy in swine feed during the growing and finishing phases. 1,045 animals were used from 60 to 190 days of age and were subjected to six treatments with 16 repetitions as follows: 1) antibiotic free; 2) antibiotics; 3) prebiotic; 4) probiotic; 5) essential oils; and 6) organic acid. Animals were weighted, and clinical history was recorded including mortality and diarrhea. At the abattoir, pneumonia index and gastric ulcers were investigated. The cost for each treatment was discussed. No difference between treatments were observed (P>0.05) regarding feed conversion rate (2.64±0.03), overall average weight gain (107.06±0.9kg), average daily weight gain (856.49±7.7g) and carcass weight (92.4±0.7kg). The application injectable drugs in animals presenting clinical symptoms, represented US$ 0.56/intervention, without difference between the treatments (P>0.05). Furthermore, independently of the treatment, high frequency of pneumonia was observed (>0.90). No difference for the degree of gastric ulcer nor feces consistency were observed (P>0.05). The utilization of antibiotic therapy and alternatives to antibiotics in feed did not produce benefits to the production indices and sanitary performances of the animals.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da cepa probiótica Lactobacillus plantarum sobre os níveis de leptina, IGF-1 e seus receptores no tecido hepatopancreático de tilápia-do-nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) e correlacionar com o desempenho zootécnico e os parâmetros microbiológicos intestinais dos peixes. Juvenis de tilápia-do-nilo (±23g) foram distribuídos em seis tanques de polietileno (45L) conectados a um sistema de recirculação, com aeração e temperatura constantes (25°C). Os peixes foram alimentados duas vezes ao dia, a 5% da biomassa do tanque, com as respectivas dietas: controle (dieta comercial sem probiótico) e suplementada com L. plantarum (1 x 108 UFC mL-1), ambas em triplicata. Após 30 dias de cultivo, os peixes alimentados com L. plantarum apresentaram maiores ganho de peso semanal, peso final e conversão alimentar, bem como maior contagem de bactérias ácido-láticas e menor contagem de bactérias patogênicas no trato intestinal das tilápias alimentadas com dieta probiótica, em comparação ao grupo controle. A intensidade da imunomarcação para os hormônios IGF-1 e leptina foi menor com a suplementação de L. plantarum do que no grupo controle, sem alterar os níveis de seus receptores. Essa redução pode implicar mudanças importantes no metabolismo e na homeostase dos peixes.

ABSTRACT This work aimed to assess the effect of the probiotic strain, Lactobacillus plantarum, on the levels of leptin, IGF-1 and their receptors on the hepatopancreatic tissues of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and then correlate fish growth performance and gut microbiological parameters. Fish juveniles (±23g) were reared in a recirculation system with constant aeration and temperature (25°C). They were distributed into six polyethylene tanks (45L) and fed twice a day at 5% of the tank biomass with the respective diets: control (commercial diet without probiotic) and supplemented with L. plantarum inoculum (1 x 108 CFU mL-1), both in triplicate. After 30 days of feeding, L. plantarum-fed fishes showed greater weekly growth rate, final weight, and feed conversion rate, in addition to higher count of lactic-acid bacteria and lower count of pathogenic bacteria in the intestinal tract, when compared to the control group. The immunostaining intensity for IGF-1 and leptin hormones was lower after L. plantarum supplementation than in the control group, with no change in the level for receptors. This reduction could implicate important changes in fish metabolism and homeostasis.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar fêmeas suínas de diferentes linhagens genéticas submetidas a diferentes sistemas reprodutivos de manejo e alojamento durante a prenhez sobre parâmetros de desempenho reprodutivo e bem-estar animal. Após o protocolo de inseminação artificial, 524 fêmeas foram divididas em dois sistemas de alojamento de gestação: PEN1=animais alojados em baias individuais durante o protocolo de inseminação artificial e, depois, alojados em grupo; PEN32=animais alojados em baias individuais desde o protocolo de inseminação artificial até 32 dias de prenhez e, depois, alojados em grupo. O número de leitões nascidos e as taxas de prenhez e parto foram avaliados. Parâmetros de bem-estar relacionados à fase gestacional foram utilizados. As fêmeas que desmamaram mais leitões no parto anterior tiveram um maior número de leitões nascidos no próximo parto. A taxa de prenhez foi afetada pelo número de doses de sêmen. A taxa de parto não foi influenciada pelos fatores avaliados, com valor médio de 91,36%. Não houve efeito do sistema de alojamento gestacional e das linhas genéticas sobre as taxas de prenhez e parto, com valores acima de 90,0%. Os indicadores de bem-estar animal mostraram parâmetros mais comprometidos no sistema PEN1. O sistema PEN1 não prejudicou o desempenho reprodutivo, embora tenha apresentado parâmetros de bem-estar animal mais comprometidos.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate swine females of different genetic lines submitted to different reproductive management and housing systems during pregnancy on reproductive performance and animal welfare parameters. After artificial insemination protocol, 524 females were divided into two gestation housing systems: PEN1=animals housed in individual stalls during the breeding and after group-housed; PEN32=animals housed in individual stalls from breeding until 32 days of pregnancy and after group-housed. The number of piglets born, and the pregnancy and farrowing rates were evaluated. Welfare parameters related to the pregnancy phase were used. Females who weaned more piglets in the previous farrowing had a higher number of piglets born at the next farrowing. The pregnancy rate was affected by the number of semen doses. The farrowing rate was not influenced by the evaluated parameters, with average value of 91.36%. There was no effect of the gestation housing system and the genetic lines on pregnancy and farrowing rates, with values above 90.0%. The animal welfare indicators showed more compromised parameters in PEN1 system. PEN1 system did not impair the reproductive performance although it presented more compromised animal welfare parameters.

Numerous studies have suggested a substantial genetic contribution in the etiology of the primary form of restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic leg movements (PLM). We describe the symptoms, the sleep profiles and physiological parameters of two families in which several members present RLS/PLM. The proband of family 1 is a 70-year-old woman and the proband of family 2 is a 57-year-old woman; both have exhibited the symptoms since the age of 20 years. All patients in both families were diagnosed with RLS according to the criteria of the International RLS Study Group. Polysomnographic recordings were performed to quantify and to describe PLM during sleep. Sleep parameters showed decreased sleep efficiency, increased sleep latency in the arousal index and the presence of PLM in all subjects. One of the families showed an exact profile of dominant inheritance with anticipation of age at onset. In the other family, the founders were blood relatives and there was no affected member in the third generation suggesting a recessive mode of inheritance. RLS/PLM is a prevalent sleep disorder affecting about 5 to 15% of the population and one that substantially impairs healthy sleep patterns. Efforts to understand the underlying pathophysiology will contribute to improve the sleep and life quality of these patients.

Neste estudo, avaliaram-se os efeitos da aplicação de doses de calcário em misturas de solo com proporções crescentes de contaminação por Zn e Cd sobre o crescimento de Eucalyptus camaldulensis. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação, e os níveis de contaminação foram obtidos pela mistura de 0, 25, 50 e 100 % de um solo contaminado a um outro não contaminado, usado como diluente. As doses de calcário foram correspondentes a 0, 10, 20, 40 e 80 t ha-1, e o experimento foi feito em vasos que continham 1,5 kg de solo, em esquema fatorial 4 x 5. A adição de calcário elevou o pH do solo próximo à neutralidade, reduziu os teores de Zn e Cd extraíveis no solo e beneficiou o crescimento das plantas. No solo de maior contaminação, as plantas morreram cinco dias após o transplantio no tratamento sem a adição de calcário. O calcário reduziu os teores de Zn na parte aérea a concentrações abaixo das consideradas tóxicas para as plantas, mas não apresentou o mesmo efeito sobre os teores de Cd. Os efeitos do calcário sobre a disponibilidade de Zn e Cd, teores na parte aérea e crescimento das plantas indicaram o potencial deste corretivo como agente amenizante da toxidez de Zn e Cd para mudas de E. camaldulensis em solos contaminados.

The effects of lime rates on the growth of Eucalyptus camaldulensis in soil mixtures with increasing proportions of Zn and Cd contamination were evaluated. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions and the metal contamination levels were obtained by mixing 0, 25, 50, and 100% of a contaminated soil with a non-contaminated one used as diluter. Lime rates were 0, 10, 20, 40, and 80 t ha-1 and the experiment was conducted in pots containing 1.5 kg of soil with treatments arranged in a 4 x 5 factorial scheme. Lime additions raised the soil pH up to neutrality, reduced concentration of extractable Zn and Cd in the soil, and increased plant growth. Plants in the highest contaminated soil died five days after transplanting when lime was not applied. Lime amendment reduced shoot Zn concentrations to below those considered toxic for plants, but did not have the same effect on Cd concentrations. The effects of lime on the availability and shoot concentrations of Zn and Cd and on plant growth indicated its potential as an ameliorator of heavy metal toxicity for E. camaldulensis seedlings in contaminated soils.

As gramíneas, usadas comumente para reabilitação de áreas degradadas, podem formar associações em suas raízes com bactérias fixadoras de nitrogênio e, assim, contribuir para a sustentabilidade do ecossistema. Por outro lado, a diversidade microbiana exerce papel relevante na resiliência dos processos biológicos do solo, que incluem a fixação biológica de N2. O presente estudo teve como objetivo a caracterização fenotípica de 72 isolados de bactérias diazotróficas associativas Gram-negativas, oriundos de áreas sob diferentes estratégias de reabilitação, após a mineração da bauxita em Poços de Caldas (MG), por meio da inoculação de amostras de solo nos meios de cultivo NFb, Fam e JNFb. Estirpes tipo e referência de espécies de Azospirillum, Herbaspirillum e Burkholderia foram usadas para comparação, uma vez que são capazes de crescer nestes meios. O dendrograma de similaridade baseado em sete características culturais dos isolados em meio de cultivo GNA revelou grande diversidade, sendo obtidos 50 grupos a 81 % de similaridade. A tolerância a NaCl em meio de cultivo batata/sacarose/ácido málico variou de 0 a 50 g L-1, permitindo separar os isolados e estirpes tipo em cinco grupos. O diâmetro celular variou de 0,61 a 1,21 µm, e 13 isolados diferiram das estirpes tipo e referência. Os padrões de proteína total, obtidos por eletroforese em gel de poliacrilamida (SDS-PAGE), foram bastante diversos, possibilitando a formação de 15 grupos com similaridade a 75 %. Não houve relação entre os grupos formados pelas várias características estudadas, tampouco destes com as áreas de origem dos isolados. Os meios de cultivo Fam e JNFb detectaram, além das espécies-alvo, outras não identificadas. A alta dissimilaridade da maioria dos isolados em relação a estirpes tipo, principalmente com relação aos padrões eletroforéticos de proteína total, admite a possibilidade da presença de novas espécies entre eles.

Grass species, which are frequently used for rehabilitation of degraded areas, can establish root associations with nitrogen fixing bacteria thus contributing to the ecosystem's sustainability. On the other hand, microbial diversity plays an important role in the resilience of biological processes, including N2 fixation. This study aimed at the phenotypic characterization of 72 diazotrophic Gram-negative bacteria. Samples were isolated from areas under different rehabilitation strategies after bauxite mining in Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and inoculated in NFb, Fam, and JNFb media. Type and reference strains of Herbaspirillum, Azospirillum and Burkholderia species were used for comparison as they are able to grow in such media. The similarity dendrogram based on seven cultural characteristics of the isolates in GNA medium presented a great diversity, as 50 groups were formed with 81 % similarity. NaCl tolerance in the potato/sucrose/acid malic medium varied from 0 to 50 g L-1 and allowed a separation of isolates and type strains into five groups. Cell diameters varied from 0.61 to 1.21 µm, and 13 isolates were not similar to the type strains. Fifteen groups with 75 % similarity were formed based on total proteins patterns obtained by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Neither was there any relationship among groups based on the different characteristics, nor between these and the areas of bacteria isolation. Fam and JNFb media detected the target species as well as other unidentified ones. The high phenotypic dissimilarity among isolates and type strains, mainly regarding total protein eletrophoresis profiles suggests that new species could be present within these populations.

Bactérias diazotróficas endofíticas contribuem para o desenvolvimento das plantas por meio da fixação biológica do nitrogênio, produção e liberação de substâncias reguladoras do crescimento vegetal, podendo, assim, facilitar a revegetação de solos degradados por atividades antrópicas. No entanto, pouco se conhece sobre as populações destas bactérias em solos ou plantas de áreas de mineração. Objetivando avaliar o efeito de diferentes tipos de vegetação e tempo de reabilitação de áreas degradadas por mineração de bauxita na densidade e diversidade de algumas espécies de bactérias diazotróficas endofíticas, realizaram-se, em duas épocas, amostragens de solo, de dois ambientes distintos, submetidos a diferentes processos de reabilitação. A densidade, avaliada pelo número mais provável, utilizando os meios de cultura: NFb, JNFb e Fam, para Azospirillum brasilense e A. lipoferum, Herbaspirillum spp. e A. amazonense, respectivamente, variou de 0 a 2,0 x 10(4) bactérias por grama de solo e mostrou que o tipo de vegetação influiu nas populações destas bactérias. Foram encontradas densidades maiores em solos revegetados com gramíneas: braquiária (Brachiaria decumbens), capim-azevém (Lolium multiflorum) e capim-gordura (Melinis minutiflora). Contudo, estas densidades podem ser consideradas baixas, se comparadas às de solos agrícolas, e não apresentaram relação com o tempo de reabilitação da área. Foram encontrados 36 fenótipos culturais em meio batata, entre os 72 isolados obtidos dos três meios de cultura utilizados. A partir destes, foram formados sete grandes grupos com similaridade superior ou igual a 63 %, dos quais cinco, representando 62,5 % do total de isolados obtidos, continham as estirpes-tipo de Burkholderia brasilensis, Herbaspirillum seropedicae e Azospirillum spp. (A. brasilense, A. amazonense, A. lipoferum, A. irakense). Apesar da baixa densidade, este grupo de bactérias apresentou alta diversidade fenotípica no ambiente estudado.

Diazotrophic endophytic bacteria enhance plant growth through biological nitrogen fixation and production and release of plant growth regulating substances, which facilitate the revegetation of areas degraded by human activities. However, little is known about populations of such bacteria in soils or plants of mining areas. Aiming to study the effects of different vegetation types and rehabilitation periods on some endophytic diazotrophic bacteria species, soil samples were collected under two environmental conditions ("Campo" and "Serra") in bauxite mined areas undergoing different rehabilitation processes. Population densities were evaluated by the most probable number method in media (NFb, JNFb, and Fam for Azospirillum brasilense and A. lipoferum, Herbaspirillum spp. and A. amazonense, respectively) and ranged from 0 to 2.0 x 10(4) bacteria g-1 soil. The vegetation types affected the diazotrophic populations. Highest densities were found in mined soils revegetated with the grass species brachiaria (Brachiaria decumbens), rye grass (Lolium multiflorum) and capim-gordura (Melinis minutiflora). However, these densities are considered low compared to those found in agricultural soils. No relationship was found between the rehabilitation time and population density. Thirty-six cultural phenotypes were found on potato medium among 72 isolates out of all three culture media. At a similarity of at least 63 %, these isolates formed seven great groups, five of which (comprising 62.5 % of the total isolates) contained the type strains of Burkholderia brasilensis, Herbaspirillum seropedicae, and Azospirillum spp. (A. brasilense, A. amazonense, A. lipoferum, A. irakense). In spite of its low density, this group of bacteria presented a high phenotypic diversity in the studied environment.

We have shown that the Paramagnetic Meissner Effect (PME) is directly associated with pinning, and not necessarily related to the presence of pi-junctions. Through the study of the magnetic properties of two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays (2D-JJA) in the present work we show that, among the systems exhibiting PME, only those with suffciently low dissipation and high capacitance will show dynamics reentrance. The concept of a critical state and its use in the interpretation of AC magnetization data in terms of a critical current density were introduced to derive the magnetic properties of hard type-II superconductors. In the critical state model proposed by Bean, flux lines penetrate into the sample and, due to the presence of disorder they give rise to a steady flux gradient. Here we show that in 2D-JJA this typical picture is valid only in short-range distances. For long-range distances, the picture of uniform flux fronts, as described by a critical state model, breaks down and the penetration of the magnetic field takes place through the growth of magnetic dendrites. De Gennes originally compared the slope of a pile of vortices to a sand-pile, with the slope being proportional to the local magnitude of the critical current. Dynamical properties of the sand-pile problem have attracted new attention since it consists of a marginally stable system displaying self-organized criticality (SOC). In this case, when a superconductor is in the Bean critical state, the addition of vortices occurs by increasing the external magnetic field. This procedure is analogous to the introduction of new grains to a sand-pile and is expected to produce an avalanche of grains of sand (or, equivalently, vortices) of all sizes to maintain a constant gradient in the grain (or, magnetic ux) density. We show in this work strong evidences pointing out that, for some specific conditions, magnetic field penetrates 2D-JJA in ux avalanches.

Azospirillum amazonense é uma bactéria fixadora de N2 atmosférico de ampla ocorrência, principalmente em associações radiculares com gramíneas e palmeiras. Para verificar sua presença em outras espécies vegetais, ainda não estudadas, e a eficiência de meios para sua detecção, foram testados os meios Fam e LGI para contagens em solo rizosférico ou em culturas de enriquecimento com solo rizosférico, ecto e endorrizosfera. A. amazonense foi detectada no solo rizosférico, ecto e endorrizosfera de várias espécies de monocotiledôneas, incluindo Orchidaceae e dicotiledôneas, sendo o meio Fam mais eficiente para sua detecção

Azospirillum amazonense is a widespread N2 fixing bacterium, occurring mainly in association with grasses and palm trees roots. Aiming to study its occurrence in species of other families not yet studied and the efficiency of media. Fam and LGI for its detection, these were used for rhizosphere soil counting or for enrichment cultures of rhizosphere soil, ecto and endorhizosphere. A. amazonense was detected in rhizosphere soil, ecto and endorhizosphere of many species belonging to monocotyledons, including Orchidaceae and dicotyledons with. Fam medium being the most efficient for its detection.

Estudos foram realizados no Departamento de Ciência do Solo da Universidade Federal de Lavras (MG), no período de novembro/1999 a janeiro/2000, com o objetivo de avaliar a sobrevivência de estirpe e isolados de rizóbio em solo contaminado com metais pesados e verificar a relação entre tolerância do rizóbio a metais pesados em meio de cultura e sua sobrevivência em solo contaminado. Foram utilizados os dois microrganismos mais tolerantes [BR-4406 (estirpe recomendada para Enterolobium spp.) e UFLA-01-457 (isolado de solo contaminado), ambos pertencentes ao gênero Bradyrhizobium ] e os dois mais sensíveis (UFLA-01-486 e UFLA-01-510, isolados de solo contaminado, pertencentes ao gênero Azorhizobium ), todos selecionados de um grupo de 60estirpes/isolados em estudos prévios deste laboratório, em meio de cultura suplementado com metais pesados.Empregaram-se misturas de um Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro (LE) que continham 0, 15 e 45% (v/v) de um Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo plíntico contaminado com Zn, Cd, Pb e Cu. As misturas de solo contaminado foram inoculadas com 20mL de cultura em YM na fase log das estirpes mencionadas, as quais foram testadas separadamente com três repetições. A avaliação do número de células viáveis no solo, realizada aos 0, 7, 14, 21 e 28dias de incubação, pelo método das diluições sucessivas e inoculação em placas com meio YMA, revelou comportamento diferenciado entre os organismos estudados. O número médio de células que sobreviveram ao final de 28 dias de incubação foi de (em UFCg-1de solo): 10(10,36), 10(10,29) e 10(9,70), para Bradyrhizobium, e 10(9,36), 10(7,54) e 0, para Azorhizobium em misturas de 0, 15 e 45% de solo contaminado, respectivamente. Portanto, houve maior sobrevivência de Bradyrhizobium do que de Azorhizobium , indicando maior tolerância a metais pesados do primeiro gênero.Como Bradyrhizobium foi também mais tolerante "in vitro", os resultados indicam haver relação entre o comportamento em solo contaminado e em meio de cultura com metais pesados.

An experiment was carried out at the Soil Science Department of Federal University of Lavras (MG), from November/1999 to January/2000, aiming to evaluate the survival of strain and isolates of rhizobia, in heavy metal contaminated soil.The possible relationship between rhizobia tolerance in culture medium and its survival in contaminated soil was also verified.From a group of 60strains/isolates tested at a previous study for metal tolerance in YMA medium, two out of the most tolerant microorganisms [BR-4406 (strain recommended as inoculant of Enterolobium spp.) and UFLA-01-457 (isolated from contaminated soil), both belonging to the genus Bradyrhizobium] and the two most sensitive microorganisms (UFLA-01-486 and UFLA-01-510, both isolated from contaminated soil and belonging to the genus Azorhizobium) were selected.A heavy metal contaminated Latosol (Oxisol) was mixed with a natural low fertility Latosol at different proportions: 0, 15 and 45% (v/v).The mixtures were inoculated with 20mL of log phase culture in YM of the above strains, tested separately with three replications.Evaluation of viable cell number at 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28days of incubation by the method of successive dilutions inoculated in YMA medium revealed differentiated behavior among the microorganisms.The average cell numbers (CFU g-1 of soil) which survived to the end of 28days of incubation were for Bradyrhizobium: 10(10.36), 10(10.29) and 10(9.70), and for Azorhizobium 10(9.36), 10(7.54) and 0, at mixtures with 0%, 15% and 45% of contaminated soil, respectively, indicating that Azorhizobium survival was more affected by heavy metals than Bradyrhizobium survival.As Bradyrhizobium was also more tolerant to heavy metals "in vitro", results indicated that there was a relationship of tolerance between both substrates.

Os fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) ocorrem de forma generalizada e formam importante simbiose com a maioria das plantas, mesmo em solos poluídos com metais pesados. Neste estudo, avaliaram-se a ocorrência e a diversidade dos FMAs em quatro locais com gramíneas em uma área de solo contaminado com metais pesados pela extração e industrialização do Zn. Verificou-se a ocorrência generalizada dos FMAs nos locais estudados, sendo esta influenciada pelas concentrações de metais no solo. Encontrou-se um total de 21 espécies, sendo: sete pertencentes ao gênero Acaulospora, seis de Scutellospora, cinco de Glomus, duas de Gigaspora e uma de Entrophospora,Glomus occultum, Acaulospora morrowiae, Acaulospora mellea, Glomus intraradices, Glomus clarum e Scutellospora pellucida foram as de maior ocorrência. A densidade de esporos, a riqueza de espécies e o aumento da dominância relacionaram-se inversamente com as concentrações de metais no solo. Acaulospora mellea, Glomus clarum e Glomus occultum dominaram as populações de esporos no solo. Concluiu-se que os metais pesados exerceram efeito diferenciado sobre os FMAs, dependendo do grau de poluição.

The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are ubiquitous establishing symbiosis with a large number of plants in spite of soil contamination with heavy metals.This study aimed to evaluate AMF occurrence and diversity in soils of four locations cultivated with grass species and contaminated with heavy metals as a result of Zn extraction and industrialization. AMFs were found in all locations, with species predominance being affected by heavy metal concentration in soil. Twenty one species were identified, belonging to the following genus: Acaulospora (seven species), Scutellospora (six species), Glomus (five species), Gigaspora (two species), Entrophospora (one species).The most frequent species identified were: Glomus occultum, Acaulospora morrowiae, Acaulospora mellea, Glomus intraradiaces, Glomus clarum, and Scutellospora pellucida. Spore density, species richness and increase in species dominance were all inversely related to heavy metal concentration.The AMF populations were dominated by Acaulospora mellea, Glomus clarum, and Glomus occultum.It was concluded that heavy metals exert differential effects on AMF populations, which are affected by the level of heavy metal pollution.
