Resumo: O trabalho assalariado feminino se transforma no século XIX, enquanto se desenvolve o capitalismo. Se, por um lado as mulheres passam a ser vistas como consumidoras de mercadorias, por outro esse consumo dá início a uma série de transformações nas suas vidas. As mulheres passam a sair da casa para comprar, em especial, roupas. A indústria de confecção, que começa a partir de pequenos ateliês, abre espaço para novos tipos de trabalho feminino remunerados: vendedoras, costureiras, fazedoras de chapéus. Multiplicam-se os trabalhos femininos no cuidado com a roupa e no vestir-se das mulheres de elite. Mas são as mucamas, as costureiras e as lavadeiras, geralmente escravas, que vão transformar o tipo de trabalho feito por mulheres no século XIX.

Abstract: Female wage labor transforms itself during the nineteenth century as capitalism develops. If, on the one hand, women are seen as consumers of goods, on the other, this consumption initiates a series of transformations in their lives. Women come out of the house specially to buy clothes. The garment industry, which starts from small ateliers, opens up space for new types of paid female work: saleswomen, dressmakers, hat makers. Women's work is multiplied in the care of the clothes and in the dressing of the elite women. But it is the maids, seamstresses and washerwomen, usually slaves, who will transform the kind of work done by women in the nineteenth century.

Resumo O crescimento da produção industrial de mercadorias no XIX é acompanhado de uma transformação importante na outra ponta da economia, a do consumo. A crescente relevância social da mercadoria é resultado de mudanças na forma de produzir, mas também é consequência do exercício cotidiano da vida social. Nesse processo, há uma redefinição do papel social da mulher que passa a exercer uma parte considerável da tarefa de escolher o que ela e a família devem consumir no dia a dia. No Brasil e especialmente na corte do Rio de Janeiro, o século XIX significou para as mulheres da elite econômica adquirir mercadorias importadas essencialmente da Europa. Neste trabalho é analisado o consumo de roupas e de objetos relacionados à moda no Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract The growth of the industrial production of goods in the XIX is accompanied by a radical transformation in the other end of the economy, that of consumption. The increasing social relevance of commodities is the result of changes in the way of production, but it is also a consequence of the daily exercise of social life. In this process, there is a redefinition of the social role of the woman, who starts to exercise a considerable part of the task of choosing what she and the family should consume every day. This redefinition also depended on the insertion of national spaces into international capitalism. In Brazil and especially in the court of Rio de Janeiro the nineteenth century meant for women of the economic elite to buy goods imported essentially from Europe. In this paper, I analyze the consumption of clothes and objects related to fashion in Rio de Janeiro.

Resumo: Após a Revolução Francesa, as leis suntuárias foram praticamente abolidas e a distinção social passou a ser cada vez mais marcada por convenções não escritas na forma de vestir tanto na Europa como no Brasil. No século XIX, no guarda-roupa masculino, ganharam espaço símbolos de pertencimento à aristocracia e alta burguesia inspirados pelo romantismo e pelo liberalismo. O que passaria distinguir os bem-nascidos eram as casacas, cartolas, bengalas, relógios de bolso e roupas pretas. O imperador d. Pedro II ao deixar-se retratar usando esses símbolos deixava claro que não era apenas um cidadão comum, mas pertencia à longa tradição da aristocracia europeia.

Abstract: After the French Revolution, the sumptuary laws were virtually abolished and social distinction has become increasingly marked by unwritten conventions in the form of wear both in Europe and in Brazil. In the nineteenth century, the male wardrobe symbolized belonging to the aristocracy and high bourgeoisie, which were inspired by romanticism and liberalism. What would distinguish the well-born were the coats, top hats, walking sticks, pocket watches and black clothes. The emperor d. Pedro II to let retract using these symbols made it clear that it was not just an ordinary citizen, but belonged to the long term tradition of European aristocracy.
