RESUMO As próteses bucomaxilofaciais (PBMF) têm como objetivo a reabilitação oral de pacientes com mutilações decorrentes de cirurgias de câncer de boca. Como parte dessa reabilitação oral, a terapia fonoaudiológica associada ao biofeedback ultrassonográfico da língua possibilita melhor precisão da produção de fala. O presente estudo teve por objetivo caracterizar a produção de fala de um indivíduo com histórico de múltiplas cirurgias oncológicas que levaram à glossectomia total, com auxílio de um dispositivo individualizado de acrílico, idealizado a partir da parceria Odonto-Fonoaudiologia da instituição e confeccionado por especialista em PBMF e terapia fonoaudiológica, utilizando o biofeedback visual com ultrassonografia. O indivíduo era homem, 45 anos, professor aposentado com histórico de carcinoma epidermóide de língua com episódios de recidiva. Como tratamento oncológico, foram realizadas diversas cirurgias associadas à radioterapia, ao longo de sete anos. O tratamento oncológico culminou com a glossectomia total e instalação de osteorradionecrose de mandíbula. O tratamento desta sequela da radioterapia também exigiu múltiplas abordagens cirúrgicas, com perda de grande parte da mandíbula, levando ao severo comprometimento das funções de deglutição e fala. Durante o atendimento multiprofissional da equipe Odonto-Fonoaudiologia de um hospital universitário, foi idealizada a confecção de um dispositivo individualizado de acrílico, objetivando melhorar a inteligibilidade da fala do paciente. Tal dispositivo foi confeccionado por dentista especialista em PBMF e ajustado em conjunto com a equipe de Fonoaudiologia. Com o dispositivo de acrílico adaptado, o indivíduo iniciou a terapia fonoaudiológica associada ao biofeedback, por meio da ultrassonografia de língua, com o objetivo de promover o refinamento da produção de fala dos fones fricativos [s] e [∫]. Ao comparar a avaliação pré-terapia e pós-terapia, foi possível identificar, após a análise das falas por juízes, melhora quanto à Porcentagem de Consoantes Corretas, de moderadamente severa para levemente moderada, bem como a inteligibilidade de fala, de insuficiente para regular. O dispositivo individualizado com a terapia fonoaudiológica associada ao biofeedback produziram resultados de fala satisfatórios, considerando-se a gravidade do caso e o elevado grau de mutilação do paciente.

ABSTRACT The oral maxillofacial prostheses (PBMF) aim the oral rehabilitation of patients with mutilations resulting from oral cancer surgery. The oral rehabilitation was composed of speech therapy associated with ultrasound biofeedback of the tongue, which allows better precision in speech production. The present study aims to characterize the speech production of an individual with a history of multiple oncological surgeries with total glossectomy with the aid of an individualized acrylic device, designed based on the partnership between Dentistry and Speech Therapy and made by a prosthetic dentist, undergoing therapy and speech therapy with visual biofeedback by ultrasound. The individual is a 45-year-old man, retired teacher with a history of tongue squamous cell carcinoma with episodes of recurrence. The cancer treatment was performed by several surgeries associated with radiotherapy over seven years. This treatment resulted in total glossectomy and the presence of osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the mandible. The sequel to radiotherapy also required multiple surgical approaches with loss of a large part of the jaw, causing severe impairment of swallowing and speech functions. During the multidisciplinary care provided by the Dentistry and Speech Therapy team at a university hospital. The creation of an individualized acrylic device was conceived, aiming to improve the speech intelligibility of the patient. This device was made by a prosthetic dentist and adjusted together with the Speech Therapy team. With the adapted acrylic device, the individual started speech therapy associated with biofeedback by means of tongue ultrasound with the aim of promoting the refinement of the speech production of the fricative headphones [s] and [∫]. When comparing the pre-therapy and post-therapy assessment (after the analysis of the speeches by judges) it was possible to identify an improvement in the Percentage of Consonants Correct (PCC) from moderately-severe to slightly-moderate, as well as speech intelligibility from insufficient to regulate. The individualized device with speech therapy associated with biofeedback produced satisfactory speech results, considering the severity of the case and the high degree of mutilation of the patient.

RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo correlacionar o grau de comprometimento da deglutição e da fala de pacientes submetidos à glossectomia devido ao câncer de língua. Trata-se de um estudo de casos, de caráter transversal observacional, realizado em sete pacientes, com idade acima de 18 anos, que realizaram glossectomia como tratamento do câncer de língua. Foram excluídos da pesquisa pacientes que possuíam doenças neurológicas, ou que realizaram outras cirurgias de cabeça e pescoço, não relacionadas ao câncer de língua. Foi realizada avaliação clínica da deglutição, por meio do protocolo Avaliação de Segurança da Deglutição (ASED) e classificação da ingestão oral, conforme a Escala Funcional de Ingestão por Via Oral (Functional Oral Intake Scale - FOIS) A avaliação da fala se deu por meio do protocolo MBGR (Marchesan, Berrentin-Felix, Genaro, Rehder). Observou-se que as maiores alterações na deglutição ocorreram em fase oral da deglutição, havendo necessidade de modificações na alimentação, impactando o nível de ingestão oral. As alterações de fala mais encontradas foram distorção nos fonemas linguoalveolares /ɾ/ e /l/ e linguopalatais /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/ e imprecisão articulatória. Houve correlação entre as alterações de deglutição e o nível de ingestão oral e as alterações de fala, demonstrando que, quanto maiores as modificações presentes na alimentação, maiores as alterações de fala encontradas nos indivíduos do presente trabalho.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to correlate the swallowing and speech impairment level of patients submitted to glossectomy due to tongue cancer. This is a cross-sectional observational case study carried out with seven patients, over 18 years of age, who underwent glossectomy as a treatment for tongue cancer. Patients who had neurological diseases or who had undergone other head and neck surgeries not related to tongue cancer were excluded from the study. Swallowing clinical evaluation was performed using the ASED (Avaliação de Segurança da Deglutição) protocol and classification of oral intake according to the FOIS scale. Speech assessment was performed using the MBGR (Marchesan, Berrentin-Felix, Genaro, Rehder) protocol. It was observed that the major changes in swallowing occurred in the oral phase of swallowing, requiring changes in feeding practices with an impact on the level of oral intake. The following speech changes were mostly found: distortion in lingual-alveolar phonemes /ɾ/ and /l/ and lingual-palatals /s/, /z/, / ʃ /, /ʒ / and articulatory inaccuracy. A correlation was found between swallowing changes and oral food intake level and speech changes, demonstrating that the greater the feeding changes, the greater the speech changes found in the individuals of the present investigation.

RESUMO Objetivo Caracterizar as alterações relacionadas à deglutição e as principais intervenções e condutas fonoaudiológicas em pacientes em cuidados paliativos, com disfagia orofaríngea. Métodos Estudo observacional, prospectivo, descritivo, realizado com 20 pacientes em cuidados paliativos, em internação hospitalar no Hospital Universitário da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Foram coletados dados do histórico de saúde, dieta prescrita, tempo de internação, avaliação e intervenção fonoaudiológica. Também foi realizada avaliação funcional da deglutição no leito hospitalar, classificação na Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS) e aplicado um questionário sobre a satisfação do paciente quanto à alimentação. Resultados A maioria dos participantes era homem, com média de idade de 75 anos, que se encontrava sob cuidados paliativos por diversos tipos de doenças e agravos à saúde. O tempo médio de internação foi de 15 dias e a maioria evoluiu a óbito durante a internação. As consistências mais utilizadas para avaliação foram líquida e mel. O sinal de penetração e/ou aspiração laringotraqueal mais frequente foi voz “molhada” após a deglutição. Quanto à FOIS, metade da amostra encontrava-se no nível 5 e pequena parte no nível 1. As intervenções mais utilizadas foram modificação de consistência, manobras de múltiplas deglutições e deglutição com esforço. A partir do questionário, verificou-se que a maioria estava satisfeita com a dieta servida pelo hospital. Conclusão As alterações mais encontradas, relacionadas à deglutição, foram sinais clínicos de penetração e/ou aspiração laringotraqueal. As principais intervenções foram ajuste nas consistências das dietas e manobras compensatórias. A maioria seguiu durante a internação com alimentação por via oral, respeitando o desejo dos pacientes e seus familiares.

ABSTRACT Purpose To characterize the changes related to swallowing and the main interventions and management of speech therapy in patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia in palliative care. Methods Observational prospective descriptive study conducted with 20 patients in palliative care at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Santa Catarina. Data were collected regarding the patients health history, prescribed diet, time of hospitalization and speech therapy evaluation and intervention. Clinical evaluation of swallowing was also performed on bedside, using the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS). A semi-structured questionnaire was applied with questions about patient’s satisfaction related to feeding. Results Most of the sample was composed of men with 75 years of age on average, all under palliative care due to different diseases and health problems. The average time of hospital stay was 15 days and most patients died during hospitalization. The most common food consistencies used for evaluation were liquid and honey. The most common sign of penetration and/or laringo-tracheal aspiration was the “wet” voice after swallowing. As to FOIS, half the sample was at level 5 and part at level 1. The most common interventions used were consistency modification, multiple swallowing maneuvers and swallowing with effort. From the survey, it was found that most patients were satisfied with the diet served by the hospital. Conclusion The most frequently encountered changes related to swallowing were clinical signs of penetration and/or laringo-tracheal aspiration. The main interventions were adjustments of the prescribed diets consistency and compensatory maneuvers. Most patients continued during hospitalization with oral feeding, respecting the desire of the patients and their family members.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar a correlação entre desvantagem vocal e a qualidade de vida em deglutição de indivíduos que foram submetidos ao tratamento quimiorradioterápico para câncer de laringe. Método Estudo transversal, observacional e quantitativo do qual participaram 14 indivíduos do gênero masculino diagnosticados com câncer de laringe, que, para tratamento, fizeram uso exclusivo de quimiorradioterapia. Aplicaram-se os instrumentos Índice de Desvantagem Vocal e Protocolo de Qualidade de Vida em Deglutição SWAL-QoL. Fez-se análise descritiva e, em seguida, aplicou-se o teste de Correlação de Spearman para verificar se havia correlação entre os escores dos instrumentos aplicados. Foram considerados estatisticamente significativos os valores de p ≤ 0,05. Resultados Não houve correlação significativa entre os domínios total do IDV e global do SWAl-QoL, porém houve correlação significante entre os domínios “Funcional” do IDV e os domínios “Fadiga” e “Social” do Swal-Qol; domínio “Orgânico” do IDV com o domínio “Social” do SWAL-QoL; escore total do IDV, com o domínio de “Deglutição como um fardo” do SWAL-QoL. Além disso, foi possível observar que o tratamento quimiorradioterápico ocasionou maior impacto em relação à voz do que em relação à deglutição para os pacientes estudados. Conclusão Os dados demonstraram correlação significante entre a desvantagem vocal e o impacto da qualidade de vida em deglutição de pacientes com câncer de laringe submetidos à quimiorradioterapia, podendo afetar seu estado emocional e sua socialização, piorando assim, sua qualidade de vida de modo geral.

ABSTRACT Purpose To verify the correlation between the voice handicap and swallowing quality of life in individuals submitted to chemoradiotherapy for laryngeal cancer treatment. Methods Cross-sectional, observational and quantitative study. Fourteen male individuals diagnosed with laryngeal cancer were submitted to exclusive chemoradiotherapy treatment. The individuals completed the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) and the Swallowing Quality of Life (SWAL-QOL) questionnaires. Data were submitted to descriptive and inferential analysis using Spearman’s Correlation Test to verify possible correlations among the scores of these instruments. Values of p ≤ 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results No significant correlation was found between the total VHI and overall SWAL-QOL scores. However, there was significant correlation between the domain Functional of the VHI and the domains Fatigue and Social of the SWAL-QOL, between the domain Organic in the VHI and the SWAL-QOL domain Social, and total VHI score and SWAL-QOL domain Swallowing as a burden. Furthermore, chemoradiotherapy treatment had a greater impact on the voice than on the swallowing for the studied individuals. Conclusion The data showed a significant correlation between voice handicap and the impact of quality of life involving swallowing in individuals with laryngeal cancer submitted to chemoradiotherapy. This may affect individuals’ emotional and social aspects, impacting their overall quality of life.

Objetivo Verificar se as características da mastigação influenciam os achados da deglutição orofaríngea em idosos. Métodos Foram analisados os dados de 47 idosos saudáveis - 29 mulheres e 18 homens - avaliados por meio da aplicação do protocolo clínico da mastigação e exame clínico funcional da deglutição orofaríngea. A avaliação da mastigação foi registrada em vídeo, tendo sido analisado o tipo mastigatório, a formação do bolo alimentar e o tempo mastigatório. Durante a avaliação clínica da deglutição foi verificado o desempenho dos pacientes quando testados alimentos de diferentes consistências, sendo que, após a realização da avaliação clínica, os indivíduos foram classificados quanto ao grau de disfunção da deglutição orofaríngea. Os dados foram analisados de modo descritivo e utilizando-se testes estatísticos de comparação e correlação. Resultados A média do tempo mastigatório foi de 32,45 segundos. A maioria dos indivíduos apresentou tipo mastigatório bilateral (62%), formação do bolo alimentar adequada (75%) e cerca de metade (47%), quadro de disfagia orofaríngea de grau moderado. De acordo com a análise estatística, não houve correlação entre o grau da disfunção da deglutição e o tipo mastigatório e a formação do bolo alimentar, porém, houve correlação positiva moderada entre o grau da disfunção da deglutição e o tempo de mastigação. Conclusão Para os idosos deste estudo, o tempo mastigatório influenciou o grau de disfunção da deglutição, não tendo sido encontrada relação para o tipo mastigatório e formação do bolo alimentar quanto aos achados da deglutição orofaríngea.

Purpose Verify if the masticatory characteristics influence the findings of the oropharyngeal swallowing in the elderly. Methods Data from 47 healthy elderly subjects (29 female and 18 male) were analyzed and evaluated by the application of the mastication clinical protocol and the functional clinical examination of the oropharyngeal swallowing. The mastication evaluation was recorded in video; the mastication type, the bolus formation, and the mastication time were analyzed. During the clinical evaluation of the swallowing, patients` performance was verified when food with different consistencies was tested. After this evaluation, subjects were classified according to the dysphagia level. Data was analyzed in a descriptive way using comparison and correlation statistical tests. Results The average mastication time was 32.45 seconds. Most subjects presented bilateral mastication (62%), adequate bolus formation (75%) and about half (47%) had moderate oropharyngeal dysphagia. According to the statistic analysis, there was no correlation among the level of swallowing dysfunction, the mastication type and the bolus formation. However, there was a statistically significant moderate positive correlation between the level of swallowing dysfunction and the mastication time. Conclusion It was verified that a relationship between the mastication time and the dysphagia level exists. However, no influence of mastication type and bolus formation on the swallowing of the elderly was found in this study.

OBJETIVO: caracterizar, por meio de fonetografia, o perfil da extensão vocal em indivíduos sem alterações pós-muda vocal e equilíbrio dentofacial. MÉTODO: participaram deste estudo 15 homens com idades entre 14 e 35 anos com pós-muda vocal. Eles responderam a um questionário específico, e também foram submetidos a uma avaliação antropométrica da face, a avaliação dento-oclusal, o exame fonetografia e também a uma análise da frequência fundamental habitual da voz. RESULTADOS: frequência fundamental mínima: 89Hz ± 3Hz ou 29st ±14st; Frequência fundamental máxima: 665Hz±179Hz ou 63st±5st; Extensão Vocal: 34st±6st; Intensidade mínima: 66 dB ± 3dB; Intensidade máxima: 114dB ± 5dB; Extensão Dinâmica Máxima: 42dB ± 4dB, Área do Fonetograma: 936,4 dB.st ± 258,8 dB.st ou 42,1 cm² ± 11,6 cm²; Frequência Fundamental Habitual para a vogal "a": 111,26 Hz ± 15,24 Hz. CONCLUSÃO: apesar de os estudos nacionais e internacionais apresentados neste trabalho não considerarem a condição dentofacial dos indivíduos, os resultados foram semelhantes.

PURPOSE: to characterize, by means of phonetography, the profile of voice extension in individuals with post changes, dentofacial balanced voice. METHOD: fifteen male individuals participated in this study, in vocal postmutation, aged between 14 and 35 years old. They answered a specific self-response questionnaire, and they were also submitted to an anthropometric assessment of the face, dento-occlusal evaluation, phonetography examination and to an analysis of the usual fundamental frequency of the voice. RESULTS: minimum Fundamental Frequency: =89Hz±3Hz or =29st±14st, Maximum Fundamental Frequency: X=665Hz±179Hz or X=63st±5, Voice Extension: X=34st±6st, Minimum Intensity: X=66dB±3dB, Maximum Intensity: X=114dB±5dB, Maximum Dynamic Extension: X=42dB±4dB, Phonetogram Area: X=936,4dB.st±258,8dB.st or X=42,1cm²±11,6cm², Usual Fundamental Frequency of the "a" vowel: X=111,26Hz±15,24Hz. CONCLUSION: although national and international studies presented in this work do not consider the dentofacial condition of the subjects, the results were very similar.

OBJETIVO: Comparar a fala e o funcionamento velofaríngeo após as técnicas de retalho faríngeo e veloplastia intravelar para a correção da disfunção velofaríngea residual. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado um estudo retrospectivo com análise de 148 casos com fissura labiopalatina operada e submetidos à correção cirúrgica da disfunção velofaríngea, sendo 77 com retalho faríngeo (média de idade: 20,4 anos) e 71 com veloplastia intravelar (média de idade: 16,2 anos). Foram avaliadas a ressonância da fala, a presença de articulações compensatórias, a emissão de ar nasal e a extensão da falha no fechamento velofaríngeo antes e após as duas técnicas. RESULTADOS: Dos 77 casos submetidos ao retalho faríngeo 64 (83%) apresentaram melhora na ressonância, enquanto que dos 71 casos com veloplastia intravelar 48 (68%) revelaram melhora, havendo diferença significativa entre os grupos. No grupo com retalho faríngeo, seis (8%) apresentaram melhora na articulação compensatória e dois (3%) no grupo veloplastia intravelar, enquanto a emissão de ar nasal melhorou em 17 (22%) casos com retalho faríngeo e em 18 (26%) com veloplastia intravelar. Não houve diferença entre os grupos quanto à articulação compensatória e emissão de ar nasal. A falha no fechamento velofaríngeo reduziu em 75 (96%) casos com retalho faríngeo e 46 (66%) com a veloplastia intravelar, havendo diferença entre os grupos. CONCLUSÃO: A técnica de retalho faríngeo mostrou-se mais efetiva na melhora da ressonância e no fechamento velofaríngeo quando comparada à veloplastia intravelar.

PURPOSE: To compare speech and velopharyngeal function after pharyngeal flap and intravelar veloplasty techniques for the correction of residual velopharyngeal dysfunction. METHODS: It was carried out a retrospective study analyzing 148 cases of cleft lip and palate operated and submitted to velopharyngeal dysfunction surgical correction, 77 with pharyngeal flap (mean age: 20.4 years) and 71 with intravelar veloplasty (mean age: 16.2 years). Speech resonance, presence of compensatory articulations, nasal air emission, and velopharyngeal gap size were assessed before and after the use of both techniques. RESULTS: Sixty four (83%) of the 77 cases submitted to pharyngeal flap presented resonance improvement, while 48 (68%) of the 71 cases with intravelar veloplasty improved, with significant difference between the groups. Six (8%) subjects with pharyngeal flap, and two (3%) with intravelar veloplasty showed improvement in compensatory articulations, while nasal air emission improved in 17 (22%) cases with pharyngeal flap, and 18 (26%) with intravelar veloplasty. No significant differences were found between the groups regarding compensatory articulations and nasal air emission. The velopharyngeal gap size reduced in 75 (96%) cases with pharyngeal flap, and 46 (66%) with intravelar veloplasty, with a significant difference between the groups. CONCLUSION: The pharyngeal flap technique was more effective in improving resonance and velopharyngeal closure, when compared to intravelar veloplasty.

OBJETIVO: Caracterizar o perfil da extensão vocal de mulheres com equilíbrio dentofacial, por meio da fonetografia. MÉTODOS: Fizeram parte desse estudo 22 estudantes do gênero feminino, com idades entre 18 e 29 anos (x = 20±2 anos), falantes do Português Brasileiro, sem alteração ou treino vocal, que apresentaram tipo de face padrão I e harmonia dento-oclusal. Foi aplicado um formulário específico de auto-resposta e também foi realizada avaliação antropométrica da face, avaliação dento-oclusal, exame da fonetografia e análise acústica da frequência fundamental habitual da voz das participantes, realizados no período pós-menstrual. RESULTADOS: Os valores encontrados para os diferentes parâmetros analisados foram: frequência fundamental mínima: x= 167,32±22,27 Hz ou x= 40,09±2,37 st, frequência fundamental máxima: x= 908,45±210,93 Hz ou x= 69,09±4,13 st, extensão vocal: x= 29,00±3,85 st, intensidade mínima: x= 69,32±4,07 dB, intensidade máxima: x= 113,14±6,10 dB, extensão dinâmica máxima: x= 3,91±5,71 dB, área do fonetograma: x=709,50±182,92 dB.st ou x=31,93±8,23 cm², frequência fundamental habitual da vogal "a": x= 211,00±22,55 Hz. CONCLUSÃO: No presente estudo foram obtidas as intensidades mínimas e máximas para as distintas frequências alcançadas pelas participantes, bem como a frequência fundamental habitual, estabelecendo os valores de referência quanto ao perfil da extensão vocal de mulheres brasileiras sem alterações vocais e com equilíbrio dentofacial.

PURPOSE: To characterize the vocal extension profile of women with dentofacial balance using phonetography. METHODS: Took part of this study 22 female students with ages between 18 and 29 years (x = 20±2 years), all Brazilian Portuguese speakers, without vocal disorders or vocal training, who presented balanced face pattern I and dental-occlusal harmony. The subjects answered a specific self-response form, and were submitted to anthropometric assessment of the face, dental-occlusal evaluation, phonetography examination, and acoustic analysis of the usual fundamental frequency of the participants' voices, carried out in the post-menstrual period. RESULTS: The values found for the different parameters analyzed were: minimum fundamental frequency: x= 167,32±22,27 Hz or x= 40,09±2,37 st, maximum fundamental frequency: x= 908,45±210,93 Hz or x= 69,09±4,13 st, voice extension: x= 29,00±3,85 st, minimum intensity: x= 69,32±4,07 dB, maximum intensity: x= 113,14±6,10 dB, maximum dynamic extension: x= 3,91±5,71 dB, phonetogram area: x= 709,50 ±182,92 dB.st ou x= 31,93±8,23 cm², usual fundamental frequency of the vowel "a": x= 211,00±22,55 Hz. CONCLUSION: The present study obtained the minimum and maximum intensity levels for different frequencies achieved by the participants, as well as the usual fundamental frequency, establishing reference values for the vocal extension profile of Brazilian woman without voice disorders and with dentofacial balance.

OBJETIVOS: Descrever as características de fala de indivíduos submetidos à palatoplastia primária; relacioná-las com tipo de fissura, técnica cirúrgica e idade na ocasião da cirurgia; e descrever as condutas fonoaudiológicas após a cirurgia. MÉTODOS: Estudo retrospectivo de 167 casos, de ambos os gêneros, com fissura labiopalatina, submetidos à palatoplastia primária. Foram coletadas informações relativas ao tipo de fissura, idade na palatoplastia, técnica cirúrgica, e as análises subjetivas sobre as características da fala, realizadas por fonoaudiólogas. RESULTADOS: Na avaliação perceptiva da fala após a cirurgia, encontrou-se inteligibilidade de fala alterada (46%), ressonância hipernasal (33%), articulações compensatórias (26%), emissão de ar nasal (14%), mímica facial (11%) e fraca pressão aérea intra-oral (8%). Na associação entre a ressonância e as articulações compensatórias com tipo de fissura, técnica cirúrgica e faixa etária, não houve diferença significativa. A conduta mais frequentemente tomada foi a de terapia fonoaudiológica (38%), para correção das articulações compensatórias e/ou outras alterações. CONCLUSÃO: A maioria dos indivíduos apresentou ressonância equilibrada ou hipernasalidade aceitável e ausência de articulações compensatória, independente do tipo de fissura, da técnica cirúrgica e da faixa etária, embora não tenha ocorrido diferença significativa. Dentre as condutas adotadas após a primeira avaliação pós-palatoplastia primária, a terapia fonoaudiológica foi a mais frequente.

PURPOSE: To describe the characteristics of the speech of subjects submitted to primary palatoplasty; to related them to the type of cleft, the surgical technique and the age at the time of surgery; and to describe the Speech-Language Pathology procedures following the surgery. METHODS: A retrospective study of 167 cleft lip and palate cases, from both genders, submitted to primary palatoplasty. Information regarding the type of cleft, age at the time of surgery, and surgical technique were gathered, and subjective analyses of the auditory-perceptive characteristics of the speech were carried out by experienced Speech-Language Pathologists. RESULTS: The auditory-perceptive evaluation that followed surgery showed altered speech intelligibility (46%), hypernasal resonance (33%), compensatory articulations (26%), nasal air emission (14%), grimace (11%), and weak intra-oral pressure (8%). There was no significant difference in the association between resonance and compensatory articulations with type of cleft, surgical technique and age range. Speech therapy was the most frequent conduct taken for the correction of compensatory articulations and/or other alterations (38%). CONCLUSION: Most subjects presented balanced resonance or acceptable hypernasality and absence of compensatory articulation, regardless the type of cleft, surgical technique and age range, although no significant differences were found. Among the conducts adopted after the first evaluation following primary palatoplasty, speech therapy was the most frequent.
