ABSTRACT The physiological quality of soya bean seeds is a determining factor in establishing the crop in the field. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the physiological quality of soya bean seeds produced by plants grown from seeds of different sizes in two crop seasons. The BS 2606 SOYTECH, NS 6700 IPRO, NA 5909 RR, BS IRGA 1642 IPRO and LANÇA 58i60 IPRO cultivars were used, sown in 2019/2020 and 2020/2021. The experimental design was of randomised blocks, with treatments comprising seeds from plants grown from seeds of three sieve sizes (5.5, 6.0 and 6.5 mm for cultivars BS2606, NS 6700 IPRO, NA 5909 RR, LANÇA; and 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0 mm for the BS IRGA 1642 IPRO cultivar). The following tests were conducted: germination, first germination count, shoot and root length, total seedling dry weight, seedling emergence, accelerated ageing and electrical conductivity. The results were subjected to analysis of variance, and the mean values were compared using Tukey’s test at 5% probability. The size classification of the soya bean seeds has no effect on the germination of the seeds that are produced. Higher seed vigour in the NA 5909 RR cultivar, determined by the seedling emergence test, and accelerated ageing in NS 6700 IPRO, were obtained from seeds produced by plants grown from seeds classified as a sieve size of 6.5 mm. RESUMO: O rasgo é um “defeito fisiológico” que ocorre no tegumento das sementes de soja e afeta a sua integridade. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da presença de rasgo no tegumento sobre a qualidade fisiológica e armazenabilidade de sementes de soja. Utilizou-se sementes de três lotes, sendo um da cultivar NS 7209 IPRO e dois da cultivar 8473 RSF, produzidas nos estados de Goiás e Mato Grosso. Cada lote foi segregado manualmente em três porções, sendo elas: Lote original (LO), sementes com tegumento íntegro (TI) e com presença de rasgo no tegumento (TR), as quais foram armazenadas sob as temperaturas de 15 °C e 28 °C durante 270 dias. O experimento foi realizado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Foram avaliados o vigor e viabilidade pelo teste de tetrazólio, primeira contagem de germinação, porcentagem de germinação, envelhecimento acelerado e condutividade elétrica aos 0, 45, 90, 135, 180, 225 e 270 dias de armazenamento, além de emergência em canteiro aos 0, 90, 180 e 270 dias. A presença de rasgo no tegumento da semente de soja reduziu a qualidade fisiológica dos lotes em todos os testes realizados quando comparada a semente com o tegumento íntegro, de forma mais acentuada no armazenamento a 28 °C. ABSTRACT: Seed coat cracking is a “physiological defect” that occurs in soybean seeds, affecting their integrity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of seed coat cracking on the physiological quality and storability of soybean seeds. Seeds from three lots were used: one from the NS 7209 IPRO cultivar and two from the 8473 RSF cultivar, produced in the states of Goiás and Mato Grosso, Brazil. RESUMO: A qualidade das sementes de soja é essencial para o sucesso da lavoura, sendo o tegumento, um elemento vital na proteção do embrião. O objetivo do estudo foi entender as causas químicas e a dinâmica de formação do rasgo no tegumento das sementes de soja. Foram utilizados os tegumentos das sementes de cinco lotes de três cultivares de soja, com e sem rasgo, e realizadas análises químicas avaliando conteúdos de silício, nitrogênio, fósforo, potássio, cálcio e magnésio. E análise anatômica, para isso os tegumentos foram cortados e observados ao microscópio para identificar as camadas celulares e a presença de rasgo. Os resultados mostraram que as sementes com rasgo apresentaram maior conteúdo de fósforo e magnésio, e menor de cálcio. A espessura do tegumento variou entre 47 e 230 micrômetros e o rasgo ocorreu preferencialmente nas regiões mais espessas. O rasgo inicia-se entre as células paliçádicas e pode se estender, criando bolsões de ar que acumulam água e produtos químicos. Logo, o rasgo no tegumento das sementes de soja está relacionado aos conteúdos de fósforo, cálcio e magnésio, com variações na espessura do tegumento contribuindo para a sua ocorrência. ABSTRACT: The quality of soybean seeds is essential for the success of the crop, with the seed coat being a vital element in protecting the embryo. The objective of this study was to understand the chemical causes and dynamics of the formation of cracks in soybean seed coat. The seed coats of five lots, with and without cracks, were used, and chemical analyses were conducted to evaluate the contents of silicon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Anatomical analysis was also performed; for this, the seed coats were cut and observed under a microscope to identify the cell layers and the presence of cracks. The results showed that seeds with cracks had higher phosphorus and magnesium contents and lower calcium content. Seed coat thickness ranged from 47 to 230 micrometers, and the cracks occurred preferentially in the thicker regions. The crack initiates between the palisade cells and can extend, creating air pockets that accumulate water and chemicals. Thus, cracks in soybean seed coat are related to the contents of phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium, and variations in seed coat thickness contribute to their occurrence. Resumo: A utilização de sementes de alta qualidade constitui um importante fator no sistema de produção de grãos. Seus benefícios ao desempenho das plantas e possíveis interações com outros fatores - ao exemplo da fertilização nitrogenada - poderiam ser mais bem compreendidos a partir do uso de análise multivariada. Com essa abordagem, o objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os impactos do vigor de sementes de dois genótipos de trigo e as interações com a fertilização nitrogenada no desempenho de plantas de trigo. Os dados analisados foram provenientes de resultados obtidos em três ambientes experimentais, localizados no departamento de Alto Paraná, Paraguai. Sementes com alto vigor proporcionaram melhor estande de plantas e maior crescimento no estágio de afilhos formados. Proporcionaram também plantas com maior desempenho vegetativo e reprodutivo - condição verificada a partir da massa de matéria seca - nos estágios de emborrachamento, florescimento e de grão leitoso, tanto na presença quanto na ausência da fertilização nitrogenada em cobertura. A análise multivariada permitiu constatar que plantas originadas de sementes com elevado vigor e não fertilizadas com N em cobertura apresentaram desempenho semelhante ao de plantas provenientes de baixo vigor, mas fertilizadas com N em cobertura. Sementes de trigo com alto vigor proporcionam plantas com desempenho superior.

Abstract: The use of high-quality seeds is an important factor in the crop production system. Its benefits to the performance of plants and possible interactions with other factors - such as nitrogen fertilization - could be better understood from a multivariate analysis perspective. With this approach, the objective of this work was to evaluate the impacts of wheat seed vigor and possible interactions with nitrogen fertilization on the performance of wheat plants. The data analyzed were obtained from the average results gathered through three experimental environments, located in the department of Alto Paraná, Paraguay. High-vigor seeds with provided a better plant stand and also a greater growth in the formed tillers stage. This category also provided plants with higher performance - a condition found for dry matter weight - in the booting, flowering and milk seed stages, in the presence and absence of nitrogen fertilization. The multivariate analysis showed that plants originating from high-vigor seeds that had not been fertilized with N showed a similar performance to that of low-vigor plants, but fertilized with N. High-vigor wheat seeds provide plants with superior performance.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o impacto da semeadura da soja em solo com baixa disponibilidade hídrica, sob dois sistemas de manejo, utilizando sementes com e sem tratamento químico; sobre a qualidade fisiológica das sementes e emergência de plântulas. Para isso, instalou-se dois experimentos, um em sistema de plantio direto (NTS) e outro sob sistema de plantio convencional (CTS), em delineamento de blocos casualizados, ambos em esquema fatorial 2x6, com duas condições de tratamento de sementes (com e sem) e seis períodos de permanência das sementes no solo (0, 24, 48, 72, 96 e 120 h), com quatro repetições. Foram avaliadas a germinação, o vigor, o percentual de plântulas anormais e o percentual de sementes mortas. O tratamento de sementes possibilitou a manutenção da germinação em níveis aceitáveis até cinco dias de permanência das sementes no solo, mesmo em CTS. A semeadura em solos com baixa disponibilidade hídrica pode acarretar reduções de 0,2 e 0,5 ponto percentual por hora de exposição ao solo seco na germinação e no vigor das sementes de soja, respectivamente.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to evaluate the impact of soybean sowing in soil with low water availability, under two management systems, using seeds with and without chemical treatment, on the physiological quality of seeds and seedling emergence. For this, two experiments were set up, one under no-tillage system (NTS) and the other under conventional tillage system (CTS), in a randomized block design, both in a 2x6 factorial scheme, with two seed treatment conditions (with and without) and six periods of seed permanence in the soil (0, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 h), with four replications. Germination, vigor, percentage of abnormal seedlings and percentage of dead seeds were evaluated. Seed treatment made it possible to maintain germination at acceptable levels for up to five days of permanence of the seeds in the soil, even in CTS. Sowing in soils with low water availability can lead to reductions of 0.2 and 0.5 percentage points per hour of exposure to dry soil in germination and vigor of soybean seeds, respectively.

RESUMO: Neste trabalho o objetivo foi avaliar a influência da presença de sementes esverdeadas de soja na sua qualidade fisiológica. Para tanto, foram utilizados seis lotes de sementes de soja da cultivar 5958RSF IPRO com 0, 0, 7, 8, 16 e 18% de sementes esverdeadas. Os testes realizados foram: primeira contagem de germinação, germinação, condutividade elétrica, emergência em campo, envelhecimento acelerado, índice de velocidade de emergência, tetrazólio, comprimento, massa seca e curva de crescimento de plântulas. Os resultados foram submetidos ao teste de normalidade e análise de variância, seguido de comparações de médias, pelo teste de Tukey ao nível de 5% de probabilidade, com auxílio do programa estatístico Rbio. Os dados de crescimento foram submetidos à análise de regressão não-linear, utilizando o software SigmaPlot 12.0. Para as sementes esverdeadas, constata-se menor viabilidade e vigor devido a maior deterioração, proporcional a porcentagem de sementes com pigmentação verde nos cotilédones, de forma que a presença de clorofila reduz a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de soja.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to assess the manner in which the presence of green soybean seeds affects their physiological quality. In this study, six lots of soybean seeds of cultivar 5958RSF IPRO with 0, 0, 7, 8, 16 and 18% of green seeds were examined. The tests done included the first germination count, germination, electrical conductivity, field emergence, accelerated aging, emergence speed index, Tetrazolium, length, dry mass and seedling growth curve. Results were tested employing the normality test and analysis of variance, and the means were compared by the Tukey test at 5% probability level, employing the Rbio statistical program. Growth data were analyzed by the nonlinear regression analytical method, using the SigmaPlot 12.0 software. The viability and vigor of the greenish seeds were confirmed to reveal higher deterioration, proportional to the percentage of seeds in which the cotyledons had green pigmentation, indicating that the presence of chlorophyll caused the physiological quality of the soybean seeds to decrease.

Este estudo teve o objetivo de avaliar a qualidade física, identificar os contaminantes de sementes de espécies forrageiras e graníferas no estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil. A coleta de dados foi realizada a partir dos resultados obtidos a partir de amostras de lotes de sementes coletadas pelo Programa Estadual de Inspeção, da Divisão de Inspeção de Insumo da Secretaria Estadual de Defesa Vegetal, Santa Catarina, Brasil. Lotes de sementes de azevém (Lolium multiflorum) (nacional), aveia preta (Avena strigosa), aveia (Avena sativa) e capim-sudão (Sorghum sudanense) comercializadas em Santa Catarina entre os anos de 2013 a 2015 apresentam não conformidades quanto à presença de outras sementes por número em relação a regulamentação brasileira. Dentro dos lotes de sementes forrageiras comercializadas em Santa Catarina, apenas lotes de sementes de milheto (Setaria italica) e azevém (importadas) apresentaram número de outras sementes abaixo do limite legal, mantendo-se dentro dos padrões de comercialização, independente do ano analisado.

This study aimed to evaluate the physical quality, identify and quantify the contaminants of seeds of forage species in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. It was created a data collection with the results obtained from samples of seeds lots collected by the State Inspection Program, from the Input Inspection Division of the State Department of Vegetal Defense, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Batches of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) seeds (national), black oat (Avena strigosa), oat (Avena sativa) and Sudan grass (Sorghum sudanense) Pers.) commercialized in Santa Catarina among the years 2013 to 2015 presented nonconformities to the presence of other seeds in relation to the Brazilian regulation. Within the lots of forage seeds commercialized in Santa Catarina, only lots of pearl millet (Setaria italica) and ryegrass seeds (imported) presented number of other seeds below the legal limit, staying within the commercialization standards, independent of the analyzed year.

Abstract Salvia hispanica L. is an annual herbaceous plant, belonging to the Lamiaceae family, it stands out as the natural resource of plant origin with the highest content of fatty acids known so far. To obtain success in the production of seeds it is necessary to use lots of high quality, which can be evaluated, through the vigor of the same, at present, one of the main requirements for the evaluation of vigor refers to the obtaining of reliable results in a relatively short period of time. The tetrazolium test stands out for being fast and reliable. However, the methodology for the genus Salvia is not referenced within the standards of the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA), considering these facts, it becomes important to carry out the experiment for the development of a protocol that allows this analysis. The research was carried out in the Seed Laboratory of the Federal University of Pelotas, six batches of black chia seeds were used and four concentrations of tetrazolium salt (0.075%, 0.1%, 0.5% and 1%) were tested to evaluate the seed viability. The experimental delineation was in randomized blocks, submitted to the analysis of variance through the F test and subsequently the means compared to each other by the Tukey test, at 5% probability, for comparison of the means. The tetrazolium test conducted in the concentration of 0.075% is efficient to evaluate the viability of the seeds of S. hispanica L., as well as to differentiate lots with different physiological quality.

Resumen La chía (Salvia hispanica L.) es una planta herbácea anual, perteneciente a la familia Lamiaceae, se destaca por ser el recurso natural de origen vegetal con mayor contenido de ácidos grasos conocidos hasta ahora. Para obtener éxito en la producción de semillas es necesario utilizar lotes de alta calidad, la cual puede ser evaluada, a través del vigor de estas, en la actualidad una de las principales exigencias para la evaluación del vigor se refiere a la obtención de resultados confiables en un período de tiempo relativamente corto. La prueba de tetrazolio se destaca por ser rápida y confiable. Sin embargo, la metodología para el género Salvia no es referenciada dentro de las normas de la International Seed Testing Association (ISTA), considerando estos hechos, se vuelve importante a la realización del experimento para el desarrollo de un protocolo que permita realizar este análisis. La investigación se realizó en el laboratorio de semillas de la Universidad Feneral de Pelotas, se utilizaron seis lotes de semillas negras de chía y se probaron cuatro concentraciones de sal de tetrazolio (0.075%, 0.1%, 0.5% y 1%) para evaluar la viabilidad de las semillas. El delineamiento experimental fue en bloques al azar, sometidos al análisis de varianza a través del test F y posteriormente las medias comparadas entre sí por el test de Tukey, al 5% de probabilidad, para comparación de las medias. La prueba de tetrazolio conducida en la concentración de 0.075% es eficiente para evaluar la viabilidad de las semillas de S. hispanica L., así como para diferenciar lotes con calidad fisiológica distinta.

Resumen: El triticale es una Poaceae ampliamente usada en la región sureste de Brasil en el periodo de invierno. Sin embargo, las semillas de esta especie pueden presentar bajo vigor por exposición a factores adversos, ya sea bióticos o abióticos, durante su formación. Esto hace que la evaluación del vigor sea imprescindible para estimar el potencial fisiológico de los lotes de semillas destinados al cultivo de esta forrajera. El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar la metodología del ensayo de envejecimiento acelerado para determinar el potencial fisiológico de semillas de triticale. Se determinaron el porcentaje de humedad, el porcentaje y velocidad de emergencia de plántulas y el porcentaje de germinación antes y después del envejecimiento acelerado, que fue realizado usando agua, solución salina saturada y solución salina no saturada durante 48, 72 y 96 horas a 42 °C. La interpretación de los resultados permitió concluir que el ensayo de envejecimiento acelerado durante 48 horas con solución salina, saturada o no, es eficiente para evaluar el vigor de semillas de triticale.

Summary: Triticale is a Poaceae widely used in the southeastern region of Brazil in the winter period. However, the seeds of this species may have low vigor as consequence of exposure to adverse factors, either biotic or abiotic, during their formation. This means that the evaluation of the vigor is essential to estimate the physiological potential of the seed lots destined to the cultivation of this forage. The objective of this work was to evaluate the methodology of the accelerated aging test to determine the physiological potential of triticale seeds. We determined the percentage of moisture, percentage and seedling emergence speed, and percent germination before and after accelerated aging, which was performed using water, saturated saline solution, and unsaturated saline solution for 48, 72 and 96 hours at 42 ° C. The interpretation of the results allowed us to conclude that the accelerated aging test for 48 hours with saline solution, saturated or not, is efficient to evaluate the vigor of triticale seeds.

RESUMO: Na presente pesquisa o objetivo foi de avaliar a produção e a qualidade de sementes de arroz de quatro cultivares em condições de estresse salino causado pela água de irrigação. O trabalho foi realizado na Faculdade de Agronomia Eliseu Maciel da Universidade Federal de Pelotas, com quatro cultivares de arroz: IRGA 417, Avaxi CL, Inov CL e IAS 12-9 (Formosa). Para o experimento utilizou-se as seguintes concentrações de salinidade: 0,0 , 12,5, 25 , 37,5 , 50 , 75 e 100mM. Após completar o ciclo da cultura, avaliaram-se as seguintes características agronômicas em cada uma das plantas: número e peso total das panículas, porcentagem de sementes cheias, chochas e peso de mil sementes. A qualidade fisiológica das sementes colhidas das plantas mantidas em condições de estresse por salinidade foi avaliada pelos testes de germinação e de primeira contagem. O estresse salino reduz a produtividade e a qualidade de sementes de arroz, com respostas diferenciadas dos cultivares quando submetidos a condições de estresse salino.

ABSTRACT: In the present study, the objective was to evaluate the production and quality of rice seeds of four cultivars under conditions of saline stress caused by irrigation water. The work was carried out at the EliseuMaciel Agronomy College of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas, with four rice cultivars, IRGA 417, Avaxi CL, Inov CL and IAS 12-9 (Formosa). In the experiment, the following saline concentrations were used: 0; 12.5; 25; 37.5; 50; 75 and 100mM. After completing the crop cycle, the following agronomic characteristics were evaluated in each of the plants: number of panicles, total weight of panicles, percentage of full seeds, percentage of seedlings and weight of a thousand seeds. The physiological quality of the seeds harvested from the plants maintained under conditions of salinity stress was evaluated by germination and first count tests. Saline stress reduced the productivity and physiological quality of rice seeds, with different responses from the four cultivars used.

Com a constante evolução tecnológica, a indústria sementeira exige cada vez mais rapidez na identificação da qualidade fisiológica das sementes. Nesse sentido, o trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a eficiência e rapidez do método de Pettenkofer na determinação da atividade respiratória para diferenciar o vigor de cinco lotes de sementes de soja cv. 'Taura'. Além da determinação da atividade respiratória, foram realizados testes de germinação em areia, condutividade elétrica, comprimento de parte aérea e raiz, massa seca da parte aérea, das raízes e massa seca total. Os resultados dos testes de qualidade fisiológica e da atividade respiratória das sementes permitiram a classificação dos lotes em diferentes níveis de qualidade fisiológica, sendo que a determinação da atividade respiratória, pelo método de Pettenkofer, é eficiente, rápida e útil como alternativa na diferenciação do vigor de lotes de sementes de soja.

The seed industry with the constant technological developments increasingly requires quick identification of seed quality. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the efficiency and speed of the Pettenkofer method for the breathing activity determination in order to distinguish the effect of the vitality of seeds. Five seed lots of soybean cv. 'Taura' were used. Besides the determination of the breathing activity, the following benchmark tests were performed: moisture content, germination, electrical conductivity, shoot length, root and total dry mass. The results of benchmark tests and breathing activity of seeds allowed the classification of the lots at different levels of vitality. The determination of breathing activity by the Pettenkofer method is efficient, fast and useful as an alternative test to distinguish soybean seed lots.

O aumento na demanda por sementes oleaginosas de alta qualidade, como o girassol, vem desencadeando um grande interesse em testes que possibilitem a diferenciação rápida do potencial de desempenho de lotes, favorecendo a pronta tomada de decisões durante diferentes etapas da produção de sementes, pré e pós-colheita. Assim, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a eficiência e rapidez do método de Pettenkofer na determinação da atividade respiratória para diferenciar o vigor de cinco lotes de sementes de girassol, cv. MG2. Além da determinação da atividade respiratória, foram conduzidos testes de germinação, condutividade elétrica, comprimento de parte aérea, matéria fresca e massa seca de plântulas. Os resultados permitiram a classificação dos lotes em diferentes níveis de qualidade fisiológica. A utilização do sistema Pettenkofer foi eficiente e rápida para proporcionar a distinção dos lotes, fazendo com que a determinação da atividade respiratória seja considerada promissora para identificar diferenças na qualidade fisiológica de lotes de sementes de girassol.

The increased demand for high quality oilseeds, such as sunflower, has encouraged interest in faster tests to distinguish seed lots, and allow prompt decisions during different stages of seed production, storage, and marketing. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the Pettenkofer method for determining respiratory activity, which can be used to differentiate the vigor of different cv. MG2 sunflower seed lots. Besides determining respiratory activity, the germination, electrical conductivity, total dry weight, fresh weight and seedling length were measured. The results permitted the classification of seed lots according to their potential performance. The Pettenkofer apparatus provided an efficient and fast separation of seed lots and the measurement of respiratory activity is promising for identifying differences in the physiological quality of sunflower seeds.

O objetivo foi avaliar os padrões isoenzimáticos de Esterase (EST - EC 3.1.1.1), Fosfatase Ácida (ACP - EC 3.1.3.2), Malato Desidrogenase (MDH - EC 1.1.1.37), Álcool Deshidrogenase (ADH - EC 1.1.1.1) e Glutamato Oxalacetato Transaminase (GOT - EC 2.6.1.1), em sementes e plântulas de dois cultivares de cevada (MN 721 e Scarlett). As sementes foram fornecidas pela empresa Westermann, localizada no município de Piratini, Rio Grande do Sul, onde foi realizado o cultivo da cevada em 2007. Foram colhidas em três épocas com diferentes percentuais de umidade, secas a 13% de umidade e armazenadas em câmara fria. Os cinco sistemas isoenzimáticos analisados apresentaram variações na expressão, principalmente quando comparados entre sementes e plântulas. Concluiu-se que há variação no padrão de expressão das enzimas EST, ACP, MDH, ADH e GOT entre sementes e plântulas. A expressão das enzimas EST e GOT foi pouco e muito influenciada pela época de colheita, respectivamente.

This study aimed to assess patterns of isozyme Esterase (EST - EC 3.1.1.1), Acid Phosphatase (ACP - EC 3.1.3.2), Malate Dehydrogenase (MDH - EC 1.1.1.37), Alcohol Dehydrogenase (ADH - EC 1.1 .1.1) and Glutamate Oxalacetate Transaminase (GOT - EC 2.6.1.1) of two barley cultivars (MN 721 and Scarlett). The seeds were supplied by the company Westermann, located in the Piratini, RS, which had undertaken the cultivation of barley in 2007. Were collected in three seasons with different percentages of moisture and dried at 13% and stored in cold. The five isozyme systems analyzed showed variations in expression, especially when compared to seeds and seedlings. It was concluded that there is variation in the pattern of expression of the enzymes EST, ACP, MDH, ADH and GOT between seeds and seedlings. The expression of EST and GOT enzymes were little and very influenced by cropping season, respectively.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da radiação gama (Co60) na qualidade fisiológica de sementes de arroz. O estudo foi realizado em três ensaios. No primeiro ensaio, sementes de arroz foram irradiadas com doses de 0; 1; 2,5 e 5Gy e, para o segundo e o terceiro ensaio, as sementes foram submetidas a envelhecimento acelerado, antes da irradiação. No segundo ensaio, as sementes foram dividas em úmidas e secas após envelhecimento acelerado e, então, foram irradiadas nas doses 0; 1; 2,5 e 5Gy. No terceiro ensaio, as sementes foram secas após o envelhecimento acelerado e irradiadas com doses de 0, 10, 25 e 50Gy. Para avaliação dos efeitos fisiológicos da radiação gama, foram realizados teste de germinação - TG, índice de velocidade de germinação - IVG e crescimento de plantas (comprimento de parte aérea e sistema radicular e massa seca total), em todos os ensaios. Foram determinadas as atividades enzimáticas da fosfatase ácida e alfa amilase nas sementes secas, no segundo ensaio. Os resultados obtidos nos ensaios indicam que as doses de radiação gama estudadas não afetam a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de arroz.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of the gamma radiation (Co60) on the physiological quality of rice seeds. The research was carried out through three tests; in the first test rice seeds were irradiated at dosages of 0; 1; 2.5 and 5Gy, while for the second and third tests the seeds were subjected to accelerated aging before being irradiated. For the second test the seeds were divided into wet and dry and both groups subjected to accelerated aging previous to irradiation at dosages of 0; 1; 2.5 and 5Gy. For the third test the seeds were dried after being subjected to accelerated aging, and then irradiated at dosages of 0, 10, 25 and 50Gy. To assess the physiological effects of the gamma radiation, all seeds were tested for germination and their germination speed index recorded. Seedling growth was graded through the measurement of the lengths of the first leaf and seminal root system and total seedling dry weight, across all tests. The enzymatic activity of acid phosphatase and alpha-amylase was measured on dry seeds from the second test. The results from all tests indicate that the applied gamma radiation dosages did not cause any changes to the physiological quality of rice seeds.

A exposição das sementes de soja a ciclos alternados de elevada e baixa umidades antes da colheita, provocado pela ocorrência de chuvas freqüentes, orvalho ou às flutuações diárias da umidade relativa do ar, resulta na deterioração por umidade, a qual pode ser apontada como a principal causa para a baixa qualidade das sementes. Alguns trabalhos têm evidenciado a existência de genótipos de soja contrastantes para qualidade fisiológica de sementes. Tais diferenças podem existir em virtude da total ou parcial impermeabilidade do tegumento à penetração de água, o que torna as sementes menos susceptíveis aos danos mecânicos, as adversidades climáticas e a deterioração por umidade. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a qualidade fisiológica das sementes dos genótipos de soja CD-202 (tegumento amarelo, permeável e susceptível a deterioração) e TP (tegumento preto, semi-permeável e resistente a deterioração) e identificar diferenças estruturais existentes entre os tegumentos desses genótipos. Na determinação da qualidade fisiológica das sementes utilizaram-se os testes de germinação e vigor (condutividade elétrica e envelhecimento acelerado). Para avaliação da estrutura dos tegumentos, foram coletadas sementes de soja em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento (25, 40 e 55 dias após a antese). Essas amostras foram encaminhadas ao Laboratório de Imunologia e Microscopia Eletrônica da Embrapa Clima Temperado, onde os tecidos de tegumento foram visualizados em microscópio ótico Olympus BX 51 com aumento de 40x, através de cortes histológicos na região oposta ao hilo. De acordo com os resultados do trabalho, sementes do genótipo TP apresentaram qualidade fisiológica superior em relação ao genótipo CD-202. Quanto à caracterização morfológica, foram detectadas diferenças entre as estruturas dos tegumentos de soja de coloração preta e amarela, as quais podem estar relacionadas à qualidade de sementes.

The exposition of soybean seeds to alternated cycles of high and low humidity before harvesting, due to frequent rain, dew or daily flotation of the relative humidity of the air, results in deterioration by humidity which can be pointed as the main cause for seeds low quality. Some works have made evident the existence of contrasting genotypes for seeds physiological quality. There are such differences because the presence of seeds with total or partial impermeability for water absorption by the coat that makes them less susceptible to mechanical damages, weather adversities, deterioration by humidity and pathogen occurrence. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of seeds from genotypes CD-202 (yellow coat, permeable and susceptible to deterioration) and TP (black coat, semi-permeable and resistent to deterioration) and identify structural differences between the coats of these genotypes. The physiological quality of the seeds was obtained by germination tests and vigour (accelerated ageing and electrical conductivity). To evaluate structural differences, soybean seeds were collected at different development stages (25, 40 and 55 days after the anthesis). These samples were sent to the Laboratory of Immunology and Electronic Microscopy of Embrapa Clima Temperado, where traverse cuts in the seeds coat in ultra-microtome "Leica", with 1µm of thickness were carried out. Coats were stained with methylene blue 1% and borax 1% and visualized in optic microscope Olympus BX 51 in increase of 40x. According to the results genotype TP presented higher physiological quality in relation to genotype CD-202. Structural differences were observed between the coats of the two genotypes which may be related to physiological quality of seeds.
