Resumo O óleo essencial de Melaleuca alternifolia (Maiden & Betche) (óleo da árvore do chá) foi eficaz em estudos anteriores, no tratamento da infestação por ácaros Demodex em humanos. O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o tempo do efeito acaricida, in vitro, desse fitoterápico sobre Demodex canis. Para o exame parasitológico, amostras foram coletadas da pele de um cão e examinadas por microscopia óptica. Apenas amostras com ácaros íntegros e com evidente movimentação de quelíceras e tarsos foram selecionadas. Vinte e uma amostras foram direcionadas para teste com o óleo, em sete concentrações diferentes: 100%; 50%; 25%; 12,5%; 6,25%; 5,0% e 3,13%. Três amostras foram testadas com o controle positivo, amitraz, e três com o controle negativo, xampu neutro. O intervalo entre o momento em que a solução foi adicionada e o instante em que cessou o movimento do último ácaro definiu o tempo de sobrevivência na amostra. Os tempos nas diferentes concentrações e nos controles foram comparados. Quanto mais alta a concentração do óleo, mais rapidamente ocorreu seu efeito letal. Os tempos de sobrevivência nos controles foram maiores que nas diferentes concentrações do óleo de melaleuca.

Abstract The essential oil of the Melaleuca alternifolia (Maiden & Betche) (tea tree oil) has been effective in previous studies, in the treatment of infestation by Demodex mites in humans. The present study aimed at evaluating the in vitro acaricidal effect of this herbal medicine on Demodex canis. For the parasitological examination, samples were collected from a dog’s skin and examined using optical microscopy. Only samples with intact mites and with evident movement of chelicerae and tarsi were selected. Twenty-one samples were tested with the oil, in seven different concentrations: 100%; 50%; 25%; 12.5%; 6.25%; 5.0% and 3.13%. Three samples were tested with the positive control amitraz, and three with the negative control neutral shampoo. The interval between the time the solution was added and the moment the movement of the last mite ceased defined the survival time in the sample. By comparing the times at different concentrations and controls, the results showed that the higher the concentration of the oil, the more quickly its lethal effect occurred, and that the survival times in the controls were longer than in the different concentrations of melaleuca oil.

Foram analisados 446 peixes: 190 Pygocentrus nattereri, 193 Serrasalmus maculatus e 63 S. marginatus, capturados nas baías Caiçara superior e inferior na bacia do alto rio Paraguai, durante um ciclo hidrológico nos meses de maio de 2008 a abril de 2009. Foram encontradas seis espécies de Branchiura: Dolops bidentata, D. longicauda, Dolops sp., Argulus multicolor, A. chicomendesi e Dipteropeltis hirundo. Todos os peixes estavam parasitados por mais de uma espécie de Branchiura e a prevalência geral foi 33,4%. As prevalências foram: P. nattereri 52,6%, S. maculatus 20,3% e S. marginatus 15,8%. O fator de condição relativo (Kn) diferiu significativamente entre indivíduos parasitados e não parasitados apenas em P. nattereri e S. maculatus. Não houve correlação significativa entre Kn e abundância de parasitos, nem entre comprimento padrão (Ls) e intensidade de infestação, nas três espécies de piranhas analisadas.

In this study, 446 fishes were analyzed: 190 Pygocentrus nattereri, 193 Serrasalmus maculatus, and 63 S. marginatus.They were captured in two bays, upper and lower Caiçara, in the upper Paraguay River basin, during one hydrological cycle from May 2008 to April 2009. Six species of Branchiura were found: Dolops bidentata, D. longicauda, Dolops sp., Argulus multicolor, A. chicomendesi, and Dipteropeltis hirundo. All fish species were infested by more than one species of Branchiura and the overall prevalence was 33.4%. The following prevalences were observed: 52.6% in P. nattereri; 20.3% in S. maculatus, and 15.8% in S. marginatus. The relative condition factor (Kn) differed significantly between parasitized and non parasitized individuals only in P. nattereri and S. maculatus. There was no correlation between Kn and abundance of parasites nor between body length (Ls) and intensity of infestation, in all three host species.

O estudo do ictioplâncton tem se mostrado uma importante ferramenta na identificação de áreas e períodos de desova para as espécies de peixes de água doce.Amostragens de ictioplâncton foram realizadas mensalmente na região de cabeceira do rio Cuiabá, bacia do alto rio Paraguai, (Mato Grosso, Brasil) e em quatro de seus tributários, entre novembro de 2007 e março de 2008, com o objetivo de avaliar a distribuição espaço-temporal de ovos e larvas de peixes. Foram amostrados 22.067 ovos e 1.045 larvas. Identificou-se correlação significativa e negativa entre a densidade de ovos, o nível fluviométrico e a vazão. A densidade de larvas não apresentou correlação significativa com nenhuma das variáveis regionais. As densidades, tanto de ovos quanto de larvas, foram significativamente maiores nos pontos no rio principal. As maiores abundâncias foram observadas em ambientes com maiores valores de largura do rio, valores intermediários de profundidade e menores valores de O2 dissolvido, condutividade e transparência. Os grupos taxonômicos de larvas mais abundantes foram Anostomidae, Zungaro zungaro, Bryconamericus spp., Pimelodus spp., Pimelodidae, Auchenipteridae e Siluriformes, com maiores abundâncias observadas nos pontos no rio principal. Os resultados mostram que o local de estudo é uma importante área de desova para as espécies de peixes migradores e não-migradores, e destacamos a importância do rio principal para o evento reprodutivo, pela influência das variáveis locais, transparência e largura do rio, que por sua vez parecem ser influenciadas temporalmente pelo nível fluviométrico.

Researches on ichthyoplankton seems to be an important tool to identification of spawning areas and periods for freshwater fish. Ichthyoplankton was sampled monthly in the headwaters of the Cuiabá River, upper Paraguay River basin, (Mato Grosso State, Brazil), and in four of its tributaries, between November 2007 and March 2008, to evaluate the spatial and temporal distribution of fish eggs and larvae and the influence of regional and local variables on their distribution. In total, 22,067 eggs and 1,045 larvae were collected. A significant negative correlation was found between egg density and the variables of river level and flow volume. Larval density was not significantly correlated with any of the regional variables. The egg and larval densities were significantly higher at the sampling sites in the main river. The highest densities were found in environments with greater river widths, intermediate depths and lowest values of dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, and transparency. Anostomidae, Zungaro zungaro, Bryconamericus spp., Pimelodus spp., Pimelodidae, Auchenipteridae, and Siluriformes were the most abundant groups of larvae, and were observed at the sampling sites in the main river. The study site is an important spawning area for migratory and, non-migratory fish species, and highlight the importance of the main river to the reproductive event, by the influence of local variables transparency and river width, which in turn maybe temporally influenced by the river level.

Foi realizada uma análise da distribuição espaço-temporal da abundância e composição da assembleia de larvas de peixes, com o objetivo de verificar as correlações com os fatores bióticos e abióticos em lagoas marginais da planície de inundação do rio Cuiabá, Pantanal, Brasil. As amostras foram coletadas quinzenalmente na região pelágica das lagoas, perto da zona litorânea coberta por macrófitas aquáticas, de dezembro de 2006 à março de 2007, na planície de inundação. Foram capturadas 2.739 larvas, representadas predominantemente por Triportheus spp. (Characidae), Parodontidae, Anostomidae, Characidae e Serrasalmidae. A densidade de larvas variou entre as lagoas amostradas em dezembro, mas as variáveis bióticas (densidade de zooplâncton) e abióticas (temperatura da água, condutividade elétrica, oxigênio dissolvido, pH, transparência e profundidade da lagoa) não afetaram significativamente a composição e a abundância das larvas. As larvas foram capturadas ao longo de todo o período de amostragem, com maiores densidades no mês de dezembro e início de janeiro. Temporalmente, a profundidade da lagoa, a transparência e o nível fluviométrico mostraram uma correlação negativa com a densidade de larvas. Tanto a abundância de zooplâncton, quanto à abundância de larvas variaram positivamente, respondendo da mesma forma às condições ambientais impostas pela cheia. A maior densidade de larvas coincidiu com as primeiras chuvas (início de dezembro), quando a pluviosidade ainda não tinha atingido seu pico.

An analysis was made of the spatial and temporal distribution of the abundance and composition of fish larvae assemblies, aiming to ascertain correlations with biotic and abiotic factors in marginal lagoons of the Cuiabá River floodplain in Brazil's Pantanal wetlands. Samples were collected bimonthly in the pelagic region of the marginal lagoons (fourteen lagoons) close to the littoral zone covered by aquatic macrophytes from December 2006 to April 2007. The captured individuals consisted of 2,739 larvae, represented predominantly by Triportheus spp. (Characidae), Parodontidae, Anostomidae, Characidae and Serrasalmidae. Larval density varied among the sample lagoons in December, but the biotic (zooplankton density) and abiotic (water temperature, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, water transparency and lagoon depth) factors did not significantly affect larval composition and abundance. Larvae were captured throughout the sample period, with the highest densities occurring in December and early January. Temporally, lagoon depth, water transparency and fluviometric level showed a negative correlation with larval density. Both the zooplankton and the larval density vary positively, responding likewise to the environmental conditions imposed by flooding. The highest larval density was also found to coincide with the first rains (early December), when the rainfall has not yet reached its peak.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar a estratégia reprodutiva e os traços de história de vida relacionados aos processos reprodutivos de P. mesopotamicus em duas regiões da bacia do rio Cuiabá: uma que representa a região das cabeceiras (rio Cuiabazinho - Rosário Oeste) e outra que abrange a área de inundação do rio Cuiabá (Porto Cercado - Poconé). Indivíduos foram amostrados, mensalmente, no período de agosto de 2006 a julho de 2007. Foram amostrados 391 indivíduos, sendo 159 de ambiente de cabeceira e 232 de área alagada. A estrutura de tamanho mostrou que em ambiente de cabeceira as fêmeas atingem comprimentos maiores que os machos, enquanto que em área alagada não houve diferença nos comprimentos. Ocorreu predomínio de fêmeas em ambiente de cabeceira, e de machos em área alagada. O período reprodutivo para o ambiente de cabeceira estendeu-se de outubro a março e para a área alagada foi restrito a outubro e novembro. A atividade alimentar apresentou diferenças significativas para ambos os sexos entre os estádios de maturação gonadal com os maiores valores encontrados em estádios de inatividade gonadal. O comprimento de primeira maturação foi de 34,89 cm e o comprimento em que todos estão aptos a reproduzirem foi de 44 cm para ambos os locais. O tipo de desova é total e a fecundidade foi positivamente relacionada ao tamanho da fêmea.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the reproductive strategy and life-history traits involved in the reproductive processes of P. mesopotamicus in two regions of the Cuiabá River basin, the first of these encompassing its headwaters (Cuiabazinho River - Rosário Oeste) and the other the flood area of the Cuiabá River (Porto Cercado - Poconé). A total of 391 individuals were sampled monthly from August 2006 to July 2007, 159 from the headwaters and 232 from the flood area. The size structure indicated that the females in the headwaters attain longer lengths than the males, while no differences in length were found in the flood area. Females predominated in the headwaters, while males outnumbered females in the flood area. The reproductive period in the headwaters extended from October to March, but was restricted to October and November in the flood area. Feeding activity showed significant differences in both sexes between the stages of gonadal maturation, with the highest values recorded in stages of gonadal inactivity. The length at first maturity was 34.89 cm and the length at which all specimens were ready for reproduction was 44 cm at both sampling sites. The spawning type was total and fecundity was positively correlated to the size of the female.

O presente trabalho avaliou a distribuição espacial e temporal da riqueza de espécies de peixes da zona litoral vegetada de 15 lagoas marginais da planície de inundação do Rio Cuiabá, Pantanal. As lagoas foram amostradas em três períodos ao longo da sessão seca (junho, setembro e dezembro de 2005), por meio de nove lances de peneira, distribuídos sistematicamente a uma distância mínima de cinco metros um do outro. Capturamos 12.784 indivíduos pertencentes a sete ordens, 21 famílias e 98 espécies. A maioria das espécies capturadas foi rara e apresentou distribuição geográfica restrita. A intensificação da seca não afetou a distribuição espacial das espécies e a perda de espécies nas diferentes ordens, ao longo da seca, foi proporcional. Tanto a abundância total de indivíduos quanto a riqueza variou no tempo. As curvas de rarefação indicaram que a redução na riqueza foi um artefato da redução na abundância de indivíduos. Quando comparamos as riquezas estimadas sob um mesmo nível de abundância não encontramos diferença entre a riqueza de espécies no início e no final da seca. Os estimadores de riqueza de espécies indicaram que distribuir as amostras no tempo foi uma estratégia adequada para reduzir o problema das falsas ausências e melhorar a eficiência da amostragem. Assim, nossos resultados sugerem que para o delineamento de reservas no Pantanal, áreas com um grande número de lagoas com diferentes formas e tamanhos conservaria um maior contingente da diversidade regional de peixes, pois a maioria das espécies de pequeno porte apresenta distribuição restrita a poucas lagoas.

The present work has evaluated the spatial and temporal distribution of fish species richness of the vegetated littoral zone of 15 marginal lagoons in the floodplain of the Cuiabá River, Pantanal. The lagoons were sampled in three periods along of the dry season (June, September and December of 2005), through nine sieve throws distributed systematically at a minimum distance of five meters from each other. We caught 12,784 individuals belonging to seven orders, 21 families and 98 species of fish. Most of the captured species were rare and presented restricted geographical distribution. Drought intensification did not affect the spatial species distribution and the loss of species as dry season proceeded was proportional in the different orders. The total abundance of individuals as well as the richness varied with time. Rarefaction curves indicated that the reduction in richness was an artifact of the reduction in the abundance of individuals. When we compared the estimated richness under a same abundance level we did not find difference among the richness of species in the beginning and at the end of the dry season. Richness estimators indicated that to distribute the samples in the time was an appropriate strategy to reduce the problem of the false absences and to improve the efficiency of the sampling. Thus, our results suggest that for the design of reserves in the Pantanal, areas with a large number of lagoons of different forms and sizes would conserve the regional fish diversity, as the distribution of most small size species is restricted to a few lagoons.
