Several yeast species of Candida genus can colonize the skin as well as the mucous membrane of the vagina and the digestive tract for short or long periods. Depending on the host's immunological state and the yeast's virulence, colonization can become an infection, invading the colonized tissues and also disseminating. AIDS is characterized by the host's intensive and progressive immunodepression which manifests as diverse symptoms, mainly lesions in the mouth. Oral candidiasis is the most prevalent opportunistic infection in individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and is an important indicator of the disease progress and the immunosuppression increase. The factors involved in the equilibrium between Candida spp. and HIV-infected subjects are sometimes contradictory and were evaluated in the present study specially for colonization.

The finite element discretization of the incompressible steady-state Navier-Stokes equations yields a non-linear problem, due to the convective terms in the momentum equations. Several methods may be used to solve this non-linear problem. In this work we study Inexact Newton-type methods, associated with the SUPG/PSPG stabilized finite element formulation. The resulting systems of equations are solved iteratively by a preconditioned Krylov-space method such as GMRES. Numerical experiments are shown to validate our approach. Performance of the nonlinear strategies is accessed by numerical tests. We concluded that Inexact Newton-type methods are more efficient than conventional Newton-type methods.

Realizou-se um experimento em casa de vegetação com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) e rizóbio na absorção e eficiência de utilização de P e nas frações fosfatadas em mudas de Eucalyptus grandis, cultivadas em consorciação com Sesbania virgata. Os tratamentos foram: inoculação ou não com FMAs em ambas as espécies de plantas e inoculação ou não com rizóbio na S. virgata, com quatro repetições. Ambas as plantas foram cultivadas em vasos de 6 L de capacidade, durante 100 dias, quando foram colhidas. A inoculação com FMAs ou FMAs + rizóbio aumentou o conteúdo de P no eucalipto, enquanto a inoculação com rizóbio, FMAs ou FMAs + rizóbio aumentou a eficiência de utilização de P. Nas frações de P, avaliadas nas folhas de eucalipto, observou-se aumento do fósforo total solúvel em ácido (PST) nos tratamentos com inoculação de rizóbio ou FMAs + rizobio. Nos tratamentos com inoculação com rizóbio, FMAs, FMAs+rizóbio ou sem inoculação, observou-se que 81, 32, 91 e 68%, respectivamente, do PST foram encontrados como fósforo orgânico (Po). Em uma avaliação conjunta das frações fosfatadas e do conteúdo de P na parte aérea do eucalipto, o que aparentemente influenciou o aumento do PST e do Po não foi o conteúdo interno de P na planta, mas, sim, a inoculação do rizóbio na sesbânia.

The effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and Rhizobium on P uptake and efficiency of use, as well as on the P fractions of Eucalyptus grandis grown in an intercropping system with Sesbania virgata were evaluated under greenhouse conditions. The treatments were: with or without inoculation with AMF of both plant species and with or without inoculation with Rhizobium of S. virgata plants only, in four replications. The two plant species were grown together in pots with a volume of 6 L for 100 days. Inoculations with AMF or with AMF + Rhizobium increased the P content in Eucalyptus plants, while inoculations with Rhizobium, AMF, or with AMF + Rhizobium increased the P utilization efficiency. An increase of total acid-soluble P (PTS) in the treatments inoculated with Rhizobium or AMF + Rhizobium was observed in the P fractions of the analyzed Eucalyptus plant leaves. In the inoculation treatments with Rhizobium, AMF, and AMF + Rhizobium, and the control (uninoculated) 81, 32, 91, and 68%, respectively, of the PST in the leaves of Eucalyptus plants were found in organic-P (Po) form. An evaluation of both the P fractions and P contents of Eucalyptus shoots suggests that the increase of PST and organic-P was caused by the inoculation of Rhizobium in sesbania plants, and not by the internal P plant content.

Realizou-se um experimento em casa de vegetação para avaliar os efeitos de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) e rizóbio na produção de matéria seca, na absorção e na eficiência de utilização de N por plantas de Eucalyptus grandis e Sesbania virgata, cultivadas em consorciação. Avaliou-se, também, a transferência de N da sesbânia para o eucalipto, utilizando-se o isótopo 15N. Os tratamentos constaram da inoculação, ou não, com FMAs em ambas as espécies de plantas e da inoculação, ou não, com rizóbio na sesbânia. Utilizaram-se vasos plásticos subdivididos em três compartimentos (A, B e C), cada um com 2 L de capacidade. Os compartimentos A e B foram separados por uma parede plástica e entre os compartimentos B e C foi colocada uma tela com poros de 40 mm que permitiu somente a passagem de hifas, mas não de raízes. A sesbânia foi cultivada com suas raízes subdivididas entre o compartimento A e B e o eucalipto foi cultivado no compartimento C. No compartimento A, foram adicionados 7 mg kg-1 de 15N-(NH4)2SO4 com 99 % de 15N. As plantas foram avaliadas aos 100 dias. Nos tratamentos com inoculação com o rizóbio, com FMAs ou com FMAs + rizóbio, foram observados, nas plantas de eucalipto, aumentos na produção de matéria seca total de 119, 223 e 209 %, respectivamente, e aumentos no conteúdo de N de 125, 247 e 310 %, respectivamente, quando comparados aos resultados do tratamento-controle. Nas plantas de sesbânia, foram observados aumentos no conteúdo de N e decréscimo na relação C/N em todos os tratamentos inoculados com os microrganismos. A eficiência de utilização de N foi maior nas plantas de eucalipto quando inoculadas com FMAs e não variou com os tratamentos nas plantas de sesbânia. Foi observada a transferência de 15N das plantas de sesbânia para o eucalipto em todos os tratamentos.

This greenhouse experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and Rhizobium on dry matter production, N uptake and efficiency of use in Eucalyptus grandis and Sesbania virgata plants grown in intercropping systems. The transfer of N from Sesbania virgata to Eucalyptus was also evaluated, using the isotope 15N. The treatments were: with or without inoculation of both plant species with AMF and with or without inoculation of S. virgata with Rhizobium. Plastic pots divided in three compartments (A, B, and C), with a volume of 2 L were used. A and B compartments were separated by a plastic division, while between the B and C compartments a nylon mesh screen (40 mm) allowed the penetration of hyphae only, not of plant roots. Root systems of the S. virgata plants were divided between the compartments A and B at planting, and Eucalyptus plants were cultivated in the compartment C. Seven mg kg-1 of 15N-(NH4)2SO4 with 99% of 15N were applied in compartment A. The plants were grown for 100 days and then harvested. In Eucalyptus plants, the Rhizobium, AMF and AMF + Rhizobium treatments increased the dry matter production by 119, 223, and 209%, respectively, and the N content by 125, 247, and 310%, respectively, in relation to control plants. In S. virgata plants, all treatments inoculated with microorganisms increased the N content and decreased the C/N rate. The efficiency of N use was greater in Eucalyptus plants inoculated with AMF and did not vary with the treatments in sesbania. A transfer of 15N from S. virgata to Eucalyptus plants was observed in all treatments.

Realizou-se um experimento em casa de vegetação com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos da inoculação com fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) e, ou, rizóbio, associados à adição de resíduo da fabricação de ácido láctico (Ferkal), na produção de mudas de Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia (sabiá) em estéril de extração de argila. Foram utilizados vasos plásticos de 6 L que continham estéril de extração de argila, adicionado do resíduo Ferkal (nas concentrações de 0, 50, 100 e 200 g dm-3). Foram empregados seis tratamentos microbiológicos (FMAs nativos; FMA Glomus clarum; rizóbio; FMAs nativos + rizóbio; FMA G. clarum + rizóbio, e controle não inoculado). Após 103 dias, as mudas foram coletadas, e analisados o peso da matéria seca dos nódulos, a taxa de colonização micorrízica, o peso da matéria seca e os teores de N e P na parte aérea das mudas. Os resultados demonstraram que adição de Ferkal no tratamento-controle (sem inoculação) aumentou significativamente o teor de P. Entretanto, as melhores respostas foram obtidas nas mudas inoculadas com FMAs e, ou, rizóbio, que apresentaram, em relação ao controle, aumentos significativos no peso da matéria seca e nos teores de N e P da parte aérea das mudas, em quase todos os tratamentos inoculados. Os FMAs nativos foram mais eficientes que o FMA G. clarum em promover o crescimento de M. caesalpiniaefolia.

An experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions to evaluate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and, or rhizobium inoculation, with the addition of industrial waste from lactic acid production (Ferkal), on the growth of Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia. Plastic pots of 6 L of capacity were used, filled with degraded soil from clay extraction areas with four levels of the Ferkal residue (0, 50, 100 and 200 g dm-3). Six microbiological treatments were conducted: indigenous AMF; AMF Glomus clarum; rhizobium; indigenous AMF + Rhizobium; AMF G. clarum + Rhizobium; and, non-inoculated control. The results were evaluated 103 days after planting by measuring AMF colonization; dry matter of nodules in the roots; weight of dry matter and N and P contents in the shoots. The results showed that the addition of Ferkal in the control treatment led to a significant increase in dry matter production and P content. However, the best results were observed in plants inoculated with AMF and, or Rhizobium, showing significant increases in dry weight and N and P content in the shoot, in almost all the inoculated treatments. The indigenous AMFs were more efficient than the G. clarum in promoting plant growth.

Realizou-se um experimento em casa de vegetação, com o objetivo de avaliar a influência da inoculação com fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs), associada à adição de formononetina (nas concentrações de 0, 5 e 10 µ mol L-1), quercetina e morina (nas concentrações de 0, 5, 10 e 15 µ mol L-1), no crescimento e teor de nutrientes de mudas de maracujazeiro, avaliadas em duas fases: produção das mudas em substrato estéril e após o transplantio para substrato não-estéril. Utilizaram-se as espécies Glomus clarum (Gc) e Glomus fasciculatum (Gf) e uma população nativa de FMAs (IN) isolada de um plantio de maracujá no município de São João da Barra (RJ). Todos os FMAs avaliados (Gc, Gf e IN) proporcionaram aumentos significativos na produção de matéria seca e no teor de nutrientes na fase de produção de mudas e após o transplantio para substrato não-estéril. A aplicação dos compostos fenólicos teve efeito apenas na fase após o transplantio, destacando-se as plantas não inoculadas que mostraram efeito benéfico da aplicação dos flavonóis quercetina e morina e do isoflavonóide formononetina (apenas na concentração 5 µ mol L-1) na colonização radicular pelos FMAs, indicando que tais compostos estimularam a população nativa de FMAs presente no substrato. Nas plantas inoculadas, não se verificou efeito dos compostos na colonização radicular pelo fungo, mas observou-se efeito positivo em algumas das variáveis analisadas.

An experiment was carried out under green house conditions to evaluate the effects of the inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), associated with the addition of formononetin (5, 10 µ mol L¹), quercetin and morin (5, 10 and 15 µ mol L¹), on the growth and nutrient content of passion fruit plants in the phase of seedlings cultivated in sterile substrate and after transplanting to a non-sterile substrate. The fungi utilized were Glomus clarum (Gc), Glomus fasciculatum (Gf) and a population of native fungi (IN), which was isolated from a passion fruit plantation in the region of São João da Barra (RJ). Significant effects on the growth and mineral nutrition of the passion fruit plants were observed for all the AMF utilized (Gc, Gf and IN), during the seedling development and after transplanting to a non-sterile substrata. The phenolic compounds had effects on root colonization and plant growth during the phase of seedling grown only in the phase of seedlings cultivated in a non-sterile substrata, where a beneficial effect of the flavonols quercetin and morin, and the isoflavonoid formononetin (5 µ mol L-1) on root colonization by AMF, was observed for the non-inoculated seedlings, indicating that these compounds stimulated the native AMF present in the substrata. For the inoculated seedlings with AMF, the flavonoids did not affect the root colonization, but had a positive effect on some variables analyzed.

Este trabalho, desenvolvido em casa de vegetação da Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense (UENF), em Campos (RJ), no primeiro semestre de 1996, objetivou avaliar a importância dos fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAS) no processo de transferência de N do feijão para o milho, utilizando o isótopo 15N. Foram construídos três tipos de vasos especiais, divididos em três seções, A, B e C, com 2 dm³ de capacidade: sem barreira, com tela de nylon de 40 ∝m (permitiu a passagem de hifas fúngicas, mas não a de raízes) e com tela de nylon de 1 ∝m (não permitiu a passagem de hifas e raízes) entre as seções B e C. Adicionaram-se 25 mg kg-1 de N somente na seção A de cada vaso, utilizando-se, como fonte (15NH4)2SO4. Duas plantas de feijão pré-germinadas e inoculadas com Rhizobium tropici foram plantadas com suas raízes divididas entre as seções A e B. Após 10 dias, efetuou-se o plantio do milho, diretamente, na seção C dos vasos, e a inoculação micorrízica nos tratamentos com o FMA foi feita pela adição de propágulos de Glomus etunicatum somente na seção C. O experimento foi coletado 35 dias após o transplantio do feijão, e os resultados demonstraram que a colonização micorrízica se mostrou satisfatória, tanto no milho quanto no feijão. A presença da micorriza aumentou a produção de matéria seca, conteúdo de 15N e P da parte aérea das plantas de milho. A transferência direta de 15N do feijão para o milho através do micélio fúngico foi de 16,6%; a transferência indireta envolvendo o FMA - ou seja, a absorção do 15N excretado pelas raízes do feijão na solução do solo que foi absorvido e transferido através do micélio do FMA para o milho - foi de 34,1%; e a transferência indireta não envolvendo o FMA - ou seja, a absorção de 15N pelas raízes de milho da solução do solo sem envolvimento do FMA - foi de 49,3%.

This work was undertaken at the State University of North Fluminense (UENF), State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, under greenhouse conditions, in the first semester of 1996, to evaluate the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in the process of nitrogen transfer from bean to maize plants using the isotope 15N. Special pots divided in three sections (A, B and C), were constructed and either no barrier and a nylon mesh screen (40 ∝m) (which allowed the AMF hyphae to pass but not the plant roots) or 1 ∝m (which acted as barrier to AM hyphae and plant roots) was inserted between the sections B and C. It was added 25 mg kg-1 of N only into the section A, using as source (15NH4)2SO4. Two bean plants pre-germinated and inoculated with Rhizobium tropici were planted with their root systems divided between the sections A and B. Ten days later, 2 seeds of maize were sown into the section C and the inoculation was made by adding inoculum (Glomus etunicatum) into the substrate. Thirty-five days after the transplanting of the legume plants the experiment was harvested and the results revealed that the mycorrhizal colonization was satisfactory in maize and bean plants. The inoculation with AMF increased the dry weight and the 15N and P content of maize plant shoots. The direct transfer of 15N via AM hyphae was 16.6%; the indirect transfer of 15N mediated by AM mycelium network, was 34.1%, and the indirect transfer not mediated by AM mycelium network was 49.3%..

The potential participation of PAF-acether (PAF) on the paw oedema triggered by enterolobin was investigated. Intraplantar injections of enterolobin )5-20 µg/paw) yielded a dose response curve for edema which appeared after 30 min, peaked in the interval between 2-4 h and faded after 24h. The pre-treatment with BN 52021, but not with other PAF antagonists such as PCA 4248 or WEB 2086, significantly blocked enterolobin-induced oedema. To clarify better the discrepant results obtained with the PAF antagonists, desensitization to PAF was performed. The oedema triggered by enterolobin was not modified in paf desensitized animals. It was concluded that the paw inflammation induced by enterolobin does not require PAF mechanism.
