RESUMO Objetivo: identificar a potência mais adequada para solda elétrica em três marcas comerciais de fios de níquel-titânio (NiTi). Métodos: noventa pares de fios ortodônticos de NiTi, de dimensões 0,018” e 0,017” × 0,025’’, foram soldados por resistência elétrica e distribuídos em três grupos: GI (Orthometric, Marília, São Paulo, Brasil), GII (3M, São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, Brasil) e GIII (GAC, Yorque, Pensilvânia, Estados Unidos). Cada grupo foi dividido em subgrupos de cinco pares de fios soldados com diferentes níveis de potência. Nos GI e GII, os fios foram soldados com níveis de potência de 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5 e 5; enquanto no GIII as potências utilizadas foram de 2.5, 3, 3.5 e 4. Os pares de fios foram submetidos a um teste de tração até sua ruptura, com registro das forças máximas. Análises de variância (ANOVA) e testes post-hoc foram realizados para determinar qual subgrupo, dentro de cada grupo, obteve a maior força de resistência. Resultados: a potência 2.5 exibiu a menor resistência à ruptura para todos os grupos (43,75 N para o GI; 28,41 N para o GII e 47,57 N para o GIII). A potência 4 mostrou maior resistência à ruptura nos GI e GII (97,90 N e 99,61 N, respectivamente), enquanto no GIII (79,28 N) foi a potência 3.5. Conclusões: os níveis de potência mais adequados variaram para as marcas comerciais, sendo identificados como 4 para Orthometric e 3M, e 3.5 para GAC.

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the appropriate power level for electric welding of three commercial brands of nickel-titanium (NiTi) wires. Methods: Ninety pairs of 0.018-in and 0.017 × 0.025-in NiTi wires were divided into three groups according to their manufacturers - GI (Orthometric, Marília, Brazil), GII (3M OralCare, St. Paul, CA) and GIII (GAC,York, PA) - and welded by electrical resistance. Each group was divided into subgroups of 5 pairs of wires, in which welding was done with different power levels. In GI and GII, power levels of 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5 and 5 were used, while in GIII 2.5, 3, 3.5 and 4 were used (each unit of power of the welding machine representing 500W). The pairs of welded wires underwent a tensile strength test on an universal testing machine until rupture and the maximum forces were recorded. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc tests were conducted to determine which subgroup within each brand group had the greatest resistance to rupture. Results: The 2.5 power exhibited the lowest resistance to rupture in all groups (43.75N for GI, 28.41N for GII and 47.57N for GIII) while the 4.0 power provided the highest resistance in GI and GII (97.90N and 99.61N, respectively), while in GIII (79.28N) the highest resistance was achieved with a 3.5 power welding. Conclusions: The most appropriate power for welding varied for each brand, being 4.0 for Orthometric and 3M, and 3.5 for GAC NiTi wires.

RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar as mudanças no sistema de forças das molas T pré-ativadas por curvatura, devido ao alívio de tensão estrutural. Métodos: noventa molas em forma de “T”, medindo 6 mm x 10 mm, confeccionadas com fio de beta-titânio TMA® de 0,017” x 0,025” e pré-ativadas por curvatura gradual, foram distribuídas aleatoriamente em nove grupos, de acordo com o momento de avaliação. O Grupo 1 foi testado imediatamente após a pré-ativação da mola e liberação do estresse, por meio de simulação da ativação. Os outros oito grupos foram divididos conforme o intervalo de tempo testado: após 24, 48 e 72 horas; 1, 2, 4, 8 e 12 semanas. Usando um transdutor de momentos acoplado a um indicador digital para extensometria e adaptado a uma máquina universal de ensaios, as magnitudes da força horizontal, do momento e da proporção momento/força (M/F) foram registradas a cada 0,5 mm de desativação a partir da ativação inicial de 5 mm, utilizando-se uma distância interbraquetes de 23 mm. Resultados: as forças horizontais reduziram-se gradualmente nos grupos (p< 0,001) e o momento apresentou uma queda lenta e significativa ao longo do tempo (p< 0,001). Todos os grupos tiveram proporções M/F semelhantes (p= 0,532), não influenciadas pelo período de tempo. Conclusões: as molas pré-ativadas por curvatura gradual sofreram deformação progressiva ao longo do tempo, o que afetou o sistema de forças - especificamente o momento -, alterando as forças horizontais produzidas.

ABSTRACT Objective: Evaluate changes in the force system of T-Loop Springs (TLS) preactivated by curvature, due to stress relaxation. Methods: Ninety TLSs measuring 6 x 10 mm, produced out with 0.017 x 0.025-in TMA® wire and preactived by gradual curvature, were randomly distributed into nine groups according to time point of evaluation. Group 1 was tested immediately after spring preactivation and stress relief, by trial activation. The other eight groups were tested after 24, 48 and 72 hours, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks, respectively. Using a moment transducer coupled to a digital extensometer indicator adapted to a universal testing machine, the amount of horizontal force, moment and moment-to-force ratios were recorded at every 0.5 mm of deactivation from 5 mm of the initial activation, in an interbracket distance of 23 mm. Results: The horizontal forces decreased gradually among the groups (p< 0.001) and the moments showed a significant and slow decrease over time among the groups (p< 0.001). All groups produced similar M/F ratios (p= 0.532), with no influence of time. Conclusions: The TLSs preactivated by curvature suffered a gradual deformation over time, which affected the force system, specifically the moments, which affected the horizontal forces produced.

RESUMO Objetivo: o objetivo desse trabalho foi determinar a deformação em molas fechadas de níquel-titânio de quatro marcas comerciais. Métodos: cento e trinta molas foram divididas em treze subgrupos, de acordo com suas características e fabricantes (Morelli, Orthometric, Ormco e GAC), com ativação entre 100% e 1.000% do comprimento efetivo de níquel-titânio presente na mola (Y), a 37 °C. Dados de desativação foram coletados e a deformação foi obtida de forma gráfica. Os valores foram comparados por meio de análise de variância e teste post-hoc de Tukey. Resultados: as molas da Morelli apresentaram a mesma quantidade de deformação considerando-se 700% de ativação de Y; as molas da Orthometric tiveram a mesma quantidade de deformação até 600-700% de Y; as molas da Ormco tiveram a mesma quantidade de deformação até 700-800% de Y; e, por fim, a maioria das molas da GAC apresentou deformação semelhante até 800-1.000% de ativação. Todas as molas testadas puderam ser ativadas até 700% sem ruptura. Conclusões: a maioria dos subgrupos se deformou de maneira semelhante até 700% de ativação, sem ruptura das molas. Os subgrupos 4B, 4C, 4D e 4E demonstraram a mesma quantidade de deformação até 1.000% de ativação, sem nenhuma ruptura.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this paper was to determine the amount of deformation in four commercial brands of nickel-titanium closed springs. Methods: A total of 130 springs were divided into 13 subgroups, according to their features and manufacturers (Morelli, Orthometric, Ormco and GAC) and activated from 100% to 1000% of the effective length of the nickel-titanium portion present at the spring, at 37 °C. Deactivation data were plotted and deformation was found graphically. The values were compared by analysis of variance and Tukey's post-hoc test. Results: Springs manufactured by Morelli had the same amount of deformation when they were activated up to 700% of Y activation; springs by Orthometric had the same amount of deformation up to 600-700% of Y; springs by Ormco had the same amount of deformation up to 700-800% of Y; and finally, the majority of springs by GAC had similar deformation up to 800%-1000% of activation. All springs tested could be activated up to 700% without rupture. Conclusions: Most subgroups were similarly deformed up to 700% of activation, without rupture of springs. Subgroups 4B, 4C, 4D and 4E showed the same amount of deformation up to 1000% of activation without any rupture at all.

resumo Objetivo: o presente artigo analisou se as molas helicoidais fechadas de níquel-titânio apresentam superelasticidade (SE), de acordo com a ativação, e se o platô de força medido corresponde ao informado pelo fabricante. Material e Métodos: 160 molas foram divididas em 16 subgrupos, de acordo com suas características, e foram ativadas proporcionalmente ao comprimento da parte extensível (NiTi) da mola (Y). Os valores de força obtidos foram analisados para determinar as taxas de SE e os platôs de força, os quais foram calculados matematicamente - sendo esses platôs comparados aos informados pelos fabricantes. Uma análise de variância foi realizada, seguida do teste post-hoc de Tukey, para detectar e analisar as diferenças entre os grupos. Resultados: todos os subgrupos apresentaram SE em ativação de 400% do comprimento Y, com exceção dos subgrupos 4B e 3A (que apresentaram SE a 300%), dos subgrupos 4E e 4G (com SE a 500%) e do subgrupo 3C (que apresentou SE na ativação de 600%). O subgrupo 3B não apresentou comportamento superelástico. Os platôs de força dependeram da ativação e em alguns subgrupos, em determinadas ativações, foram semelhantes à força informada pelo fabricante. Conclusões: a maioria das molas apresentou comportamento superelástico na ativação de 400%. Os platôs de força são difíceis de ser comparados, devido à falta de informações por parte dos fabricantes.

abstract Objective: This paper analyzed whether nickel-titanium closed coil springs (NTCCS) have a different superelastic (SE) behavior according to activation and whether their force plateau corresponds to that informed by the manufacturer. Methods: A total of 160 springs were divided into 16 subgroups according to their features and activated proportionally to the length of the extensible part (NiTi) of the spring (Y). The force values measured were analyzed to determine SE rates and force plateaus, which were mathematically calculated. These plateaus were compared to those informed by the manufacturer. Analysis of variance was accomplished followed by Tukey post-hoc test to detect and analyze differences between groups. Results: All subgroups were SE at the activation of 400% of Y length, except for: subgroups 4B and 3A, which were SE at 300%; subgroups 4E and 4G, which were SE at 500%; and subgroup 3C, which was SE at 600%. Subgroup 3B did not show a SE behavior. Force plateaus depended on activation and, in some subgroups and some activations, were similar to the force informed. Conclusions: Most of the springs showed SE behavior at 400% of activation. Force plateaus are difficult to compare due to lack of information provided by manufacturers.

Resumo Objetivo: avaliar os sistemas de força produzidos por quatro marcas de fios de -Ti, dobrados em formas complexas. Métodos: quarenta molas T-Loop (TLS) dobradas à mão, confeccionadas a partir de fios de -Ti, calibre 0,017" x 0,025", foram aleatoriamente divididas em quatro grupos, de acordo com a marca do fio: TMA (G1), BETA FLEXY (G2), BETA III Wire (G3) e BETA CNA (G4). Forças e momentos foram registrados por um transdutor de momento - acoplado a um extensômetro digital, adaptado a uma máquina de ensaios -, a cada 0,5mm de desativação, a partir de 5mm da ativação inicial. A proporção momento-força (M/F), a sobreposição das extensões verticais das TLSs e a relação carga-deflexão (C/D) também foram calculadas. Para completar os resultados, o módulo de Young (MY) de cada fio foi determinado pelo declive no gráfico de carga-deflexão em um ensaio de tração. Ademais, a composição química da superfície foi avaliada por um espectrômetro de fluorescência de raios X por energia dispersiva. Resultados: todos os grupos, exceto o G2, produziram níveis de força semelhantes, inicialmente. O G3 produziu as maiores taxas de C/D, enquanto G1 e G4 tiveram quantidades similares de sobreposição das extensões verticais das TLSs em posição neutra. G1 e G3 geraram os mais altos níveis de momentos, enquanto G2 e G3 produziram os mais altos índices de M/F. Os fios -Ti do G3 produziram o maior MY, e todos os grupos apresentaram composição semelhante, exceto G2. Conclusão: os quatro fios de beta-titânio analisados produziram diferentes sistemas de forças, quando utilizados para formas mais complexas, devido ao fato de que cada fio responde de forma diversa à confecção de dobras.

Abstract Objective: Evaluation of the force system produced by four brands of b-Ti wires bent into an elaborate design. Methods: A total of 40 T-loop springs (TLS) hand-bent from 0.017 x 0.025-in b-Ti were randomly divided into four groups according to wire brand: TMATM(G1), BETA FLEXYTM (G2), BETA III WIRETM (G3) and BETA CNATM (G4). Forces and moments were recorded by a moment transducer, coupled to a digital extensometer indicator adapted to a testing machine, every 0.5 mm of deactivation from 5 mm of the initial activation. The moment-to-force (MF) ratio, the overlapping of the vertical extensions of the TLSs and the load-deflection (LD) ratio were also calculated. To complement the results, the Young's module (YM) of each wire was determined by the slope of the load-deflection graph of a tensile test. The surface chemical composition was also evaluated by an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Results: All groups, except for G2, produced similar force levels initially. G3 produced the highest LD rates and G1 and G4 had similar amounts of overlap of the vertical extensions of the TLSs in "neutral position". G1 and G3 delivered the highest levels of moments, and G2 and G3 produced the highest MF ratios. b-Ti wires from G3 produced the highest YM and all groups showed similar composition, except for G2. Conclusion: The four beta-titanium wires analyzed produced different force systems when used in a more elaborate design due to the fact that each wire responds differently to bends.

INTRODUÇÃO: as telerradiografias laterais são tradicionalmente solicitadas para planejamento ortodôntico, mas raramente utilizadas para avaliar assimetrias. OBJETIVO: o objetivo do presente estudo foi utilizar as telerradiografias laterais para identificar as alterações morfológicas esqueléticas e dentoalveolares existentes na má oclusão de Classe II subdivisão e compará-las com a morfologia existente nas más oclusões de Classe I e II. MÉTODOS: noventa telerradiografias laterais iniciais de adolescentes brasileiros de ambos os sexos, com idade cronológica entre 12 e 15 anos, foram divididas em três grupos randomizados e proporcionais: Grupo 1 (Classe I), Grupo 2 (Classe II) e Grupo 3 (Classe II subdivisão). A análise das telerradiografias laterais envolveu mensurações angulares, mensurações lineares horizontais e dois índices de assimetria, estipulados para o presente estudo. RESULTADOS: foi identificada, de acordo com o Índice de assimetria dentária (IAD), uma maior assimetria dentária inferior no Grupo 3. O Índice de assimetria mandibular (IAM) revelou menor assimetria esquelética e dentária no Grupo 2, maior assimetria esquelética no Grupo 1 e maior assimetria dentária inferior no Grupo 3. CONCLUSÃO: o IAD e o IAM mostraram maior assimetria dentária inferior no Grupo 3 do que nos Grupos 1 e 2. Esses resultados estão de acordo com os encontrados em outros métodos de diagnóstico, indicando que a telerradiografia lateral é um método aceitável para avaliar alterações morfológicas esqueléticas e dentoalveolares nas más oclusões.

INTRODUCTION: Lateral cephalometric radiographs are traditionally required for orthodontic treatment, yet rarely used to assess asymmetries. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to use lateral cephalometric radiographs to identify existing skeletal and dentoalveolar morphological alterations in Class II subdivision and to compare them with the existing morphology in Class I and II relationship. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ninety initial lateral cephalometric radiographs of male and female Brazilian children aged between 12 to 15 years old were randomly and proportionally divided into three groups: Group 1 (Class I), Group 2 (Class II) and Group 3 (Class II subdivision). Analysis of lateral cephalometric radiographs included angular measurements, horizontal linear measurements and two indexes of asymmetry that were prepared for this study. RESULTS: In accordance with an Index of Dental Asymmetry (IDA), greater mandibular dental asymmetry was identified in Group 3. An Index of Mandibular Asymmetry (IMA) revealed less skeletal and dental mandibular asymmetry in Group 2, greater skeletal mandibular asymmetry in Group 1, and greater mandibular dental asymmetry in Group 3. CONCLUSION: Both IDA and IMA revealed greater mandibular dental asymmetry for Group 3 in comparison to Groups 1 and 2. These results are in accordance with those found by other diagnostic methods, showing that lateral cephalometric radiography is an acceptable method to identify existing skeletal and dentoalveolar morphological alterations in malocclusions.

OBJETIVO: avaliar a influência da maturação óssea no processo de crescimento e de desenvolvimento mandibular e dentoalveolar durante a correção da Classe II, divisão 1, com o Bionator de Balters. MÉTODOS: foram avaliados três grupos de crianças com Classe II, divisão 1. Dois grupos foram tratados por um ano com o aparelho Bionator de Balters, em diferentes idades esqueléticas (Grupo 1: 6 crianças, com 7 a 8 anos de idade; e Grupo 2: 10 crianças, com 9 a 10 anos); e um grupo sem tratamento (Grupo controle: 7 crianças, com 8 a 9 anos). Telerradiografias laterais em norma de 45º foram utilizadas para a avaliação do crescimento mandibular e para o desenvolvimento dentoalveolar. Implantes metálicos de tântalo foram usados como referência fixa e estável para sobreposições radiográficas e aquisição de dados. Na análise estatística do deslocamento de pontos localizados na região de côndilo, corpo e base mandibular e de pontos dentários, foi empregado o teste t de Student; para avaliar as diferenças entre os grupos, usou-se a análise de variância a um critério de classificação (nível de significância de 95%). RESULTADOS: os grupos, quando avaliados individualmente, apresentaram crescimento de todos os pontos esqueléticos de forma significativa (1,2 a 3,7mm); porém, quando comparados entre si, a quantidade de crescimento na região do côndilo, ramo e base da mandíbula não foi estatisticamente diferente. Quanto às alterações dentárias, ocorreu maior inclinação dos incisivos inferiores para vestibular (1,86mm) nos pacientes menos maduros, e maior extrusão dos primeiros molares permanentes (4,8mm) nos pacientes mais maduros.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the influence of the skeletal maturation in the mandibular and dentoalveolar growth and development during the Class II, division 1, malocclusion correction with Balters bionator. METHODS: Three groups of children with Class II, division 1, malocclusion were evaluated. Two of them were treated for one year with the bionator of Balters appliance in different skeletal ages (Group 1: 6 children, 7 to 8 years old and Group 2: 10 children, 9 to 10 years old) and the other one was followed without treatment (Control Group: 7 children, 8 to 9 years old). Lateral 45 degree cephalometric radiographs were used for the evaluation of the mandibular growth and dentoalveolar development. Tantalum metallic implants were used as fixed and stable references for radiograph superimposition and data acquisition. Student's t test was used in the statistical analysis of the displacement of the points in the condyle, ramus, mandibular base and dental points. Analysis of variance one-fixed criteria was used to evaluate group differences (95% of level of significance). RESULTS: The intragroup evaluation showed that all groups present significant skeletal growth for all points analyzed (1.2 to 3.7 mm), but in an intergroup comparison, the increment of the mandibular growth in the condyle, ramus and mandibular base were not statically different. For the dentoalveolar modifications, the less mature children showed greater labial inclination of the lower incisors (1.86 mm) and the most mature children showed greater first permanent molar extrusion (4.8 mm).

The present study aimed at analyzing and comparing longitudinally the EMG (electromyographic activity) of the superior orbicularis oris muscle according to the breathing mode. The sample, 38 adolescents with Angle Class II Division 1 malocclusion with predominantly nose (PNB) or mouth (PMB) breathing, was evaluated at two different periods, with a two-year interval between them. For that purpose, a 16channel electromyography machine was employed, which was properly calibrated in a PC equipped with an analogue-digital converter, with utilization of surface, passive and bipolar electrodes. The RMS data (root mean square) were collected at rest and in 12 movements and normalized according to time and amplitude, by the peak value of EMG, in order to allow comparisons between subjects and between periods. Comparison of the muscle function of PNB and PMB subjects at period 1 (P1), period 2 (P2) and the variation between periods (Δ) did not reveal statistically significant differences between groups (p < 0.05). However, longitudinal evaluation of the muscle function in PNB and PMB subjects demonstrated different evolutions in the percentage of required EMG for accomplishment of the movements investigated. It was possible to conclude that there are differences in the percentage of electric activity of the upper lip with the growth of the subjects according to the breathing mode.

INTRODUÇÃO: o ronco é produzido pela vibração do palato mole e/ou outros tecidos bucofaríngeos, durante a passagem do ar, na função respiratória. A SAHOS é definida como o fechamento de 30%, no mínimo, da via aérea nasal/bucal por 10 segundos ou mais, apesar de existir esforço ventilatório, acompanhado de dessaturação da oxi-hemoglobina de 4% ou mais. OBJETIVO: avaliar a evidência científica disponível sobre a utilização de aparelhos intrabucais de avanço mandibular no tratamento do ronco e da SAHOS. MÉTODOS: uma estratégia de busca eletrônica utilizando palavras-chaves e critérios predefinidos foi realizada incluindo trabalhos publicados até outubro de 2008. Foi também utilizada a avaliação qualitativa da metodologia dos artigos. RESULTADOS: embora um significativo número de estudos tenha analisado o assunto, apenas 7 artigos apresentaram qualidade metodológica para serem incluídos nesta revisão sistemática. CONCLUSÕES: os aparelhos intrabucais de avanço mandibular estão amplamente indicados para o tratamento do ronco e da SAHOS como terapia principal, ou alternativa naqueles pacientes que não podem suportar a terapia da pressão positiva das vias aéreas.

INTRODUCTION: The snoring is produced by the vibration of the soft palatum and/or other oropharyngeal tissues, during the air passage, in the breathing function. OSAHS is defined as the closing of 30%, at least, of the nasal/buccal airway for 10 seconds or more, in spite of existing inspiratory effort, accompanied by oxyhemoglobin desaturation of 4% or more. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the available scientific evidence about the use of mandibular advancement intraoral appliances in the treatment of the snoring and/or OSAHS. METHODOLOGY: Electronic search strategy using predefined key-words and criteria was realized including studies published until October of 2008. It was also used the qualitative evaluation of the articles methodology. RESULTS: Although a significant number of articles has studied this subject, only 7 articles showed methodological quality to be included in this systematic review. CONCLUSION: The intraoral appliances are widely prescribed for the treatment of snoring and OSAHS as primary therapy and as an alternative to patients who are unable to tolerate the positive airway pressure therapy.

Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo geral avaliar a discrepância de tamanho dentário, na oclusão normal e nos diferentes tipos de más oclusões e a sua relação com as medidas que determinam a forma de arco e o posicionamento dentário na região anterior. Para tanto, foram estudados 185 pares de modelos de gesso, divididos em 4 grupos: Grupo 1 (composto por 41 pares com Oclusão Normal, sendo 20 do gênero masculino e 21 do gênero feminino); Grupo 2 (composto por 44 pares com má oclusão de Classe I, divisão 1, sendo 22 do gênero masculino e 22 do gênero feminino); Grupo 3 (composto por 54 pares com má oclusão de Classe II, sendo 28 do gênero masculino e 26 do gênero feminino) e Grupo 4 (composto por 46 pares com Classe III, sendo 23 do gênero masculino e 23 do gênero feminino). Observou-se que não ocorreu dimorfismo sexual entre as discrepâncias de tamanho dentário e os diferentes tipos de oclusão dentária; as proporções estabelecidas por Bolton não se aplicaram ao grupo com Oclusão Normal; na Oclusão Normal, Classe I, Classe II e Classe III, houve um predomínio de excesso dentário total (RAZ12) no arco inferior; na Classe I houve uma igualdade na distribuição de excesso dentário anterior (RAZ6) nos arcos superior e inferior; na Oclusão Normal, Classe II e Classe III, ocorreu um predomínio de excesso dentário anterior (RAZ6) no arco inferior, em relação ao arco superior; os excessos dentários não contribuíram na ocorrência das más oclusões e as discrepâncias total e anterior (RAZ12 e RAZ6) não interferiram diretamente nas larguras e comprimentos dos arcos, bem como no posicionamento dos dentes anteriores.

The general purpose of this study was to evaluate tooth size discrepancy in normal occlusion and in different malocclusion types and its relationship to measurements which determine arch form and anterior tooth positioning. One hundred and eighty five sets of casts of leucoderms were divided into four groups: Group 1 (consisted of 41 pairs of models with Normal Occlusion, 20 males and 21 females); Group 2 (consisted of 44 pairs of models with Class I malocclusion, 22 males and 22 females); Group 3 (consisted of 54 pairs of models with Class II, div. 1, malocclusion, 28 males and 26 females) and Group 4 (consisted of 46 pairs of models with Class III malocclusion, 23 males and 23 females). No sexual dimorphism was observed between tooth size discrepancies and different types of dental occlusion; the proportions stated by Bolton were not applied to the Normal Occlusion group; in Normal Occlusion, Class I, Class II and Class III there was an overall ratio excess in the lower arch; in Class I there was an equal anterior excess distribution in upper and lower arches; in Normal Occlusion, Class II and Class III there was a prevalent incidence of anterior ratio excess in lower arch; upper arch excess did not contribute to malocclusion occurrence and overall and anterior discrepancies did not interfere with arch width and length, as well as with anterior tooth positioning.

Diante das diferenças existentes nas características das bases dos braquetes usados atualmente, objetivou-se neste trabalho comparar entre si três tipos de bases de braquetes metálicos (Monobloc, Equilibrium e Dynalock). Foram utilizados 36 pré-molares humanos, divididos em 3 grupos de 12 dentes. Os dentes foram incluídos em troquéis com gesso pedra tipo IV e posicionados com suas faces vestibulares perpendiculares à base do troquel. Todos os braquetes foram colados com o compósito Concise Ortodôntico e submetidos ao ensaio de cisalhamento em uma Máquina Universal com uma velocidade de 0,5 mm por minuto. O braquete Monobloc obteve o maior valor médio de resistência adesiva (x = 28,19 Kgf/cm²), sendo superior estatisticamente aos braquetes Equilibrium (x = 18,07 Kgf/cm²) e Dynalock (x = 18,24 Kgf/cm²). Em relação ao ARI (Índice de Remanescente Resinoso), não foi encontrada diferença estatística entre os braquetes testados.

Considering the differences in the bracket bases currently used, it was performed a study with the purpose of comparing three different metallic bracket bases commercially available. It was used 36 human bicuspids divided into 3 groups of 12 teeth. These teeth were immersed in a troquel with gypsy stone type IV and positioned with their buccal face perpendicular to the troquel base. For each group of teeth it was bonded one of the three brackets using Concise Orthodontic composite. Afterwards they were submitted to a shear bound strength test in a universal machine calibrated for a 0,5mm/minute speed. Monobloc bracket base showed the greater mean value of adhesive resistance (x = 28,19 Kgf/cm²), result statistically superior to that shown by Equilibrium (x = 18,07 Kgf/cm²) and Dynalock (x = 18,24 Kgf/cm²) ones. The ARI (Adhesive reminiscent index) showed no statistically difference among the bracket bases studied.

Para o presente trabalho, 235 crianças pertencentes às creches da Prefeitura Municipal de Araraquara foram avaliadas e moldadas com um dispositivo confeccionado com cera utilidade e palito abaixador de língua na forma dos arcos dentários. No intervalo de um ano as mesmas crianças foram remoldadas afim de se verificar se houveram ou não mudanças nas dimensões do arco dentário decíduo. A partir da obtenção dos modelos em gesso, foram realizadas medições por meio de um dispositivo digitalizador tridimensional denominado MicroScribe-3DX nos instantes inicial (primeira moldagem) e final (moldagem após um ano). Foram avaliadas medidas referentes às distâncias inter-segundos molares, interprimeiros molares, intercaninos, perímetro, comprimento de arco e espaços primatas. Consideraram-se ainda dimorfismo sexual, tipo de arco e influência de hábitos. Concluiu-se que as dimensões transversais sofreram aumento significativo na dentadura decídua, enquanto que o perímetro, o comprimento e os espaços primatas permaneceram constantes. As distâncias intermolares apresentaram dimorfismo sexual, com dimensões maiores no gênero feminino. Com relação às medidas de perímetro, comprimento e espaços primatas não ocorreram diferenças significantes em relação ao gênero. As dimensões de comprimento nos arcos não diferem nos arcos decíduos Tipo I e Tipo II de Baume, enquanto que o diâmetro dos arcos Tipo I de Baume, são maiores do que os do Tipo II. Os hábitos de sucção de dedo e chupeta não provocaram alterações nas dimensões dos arcos decíduos no período observado, de um ano.

Two hundred and thirty five children enrolled in kindergarden of Araraquara public school system were evalueted and cast models were obtained. For this purpose a special apparatus was confeccioned with utility wax and exam stick following the dental arch form. After an year same children were evaluated again in order to observe possible changes in the primary dental arches. Using the cast models some measurements were acquired by a tridimensional digitalizer, MicroScribe-3DX, on the first and after one year cast models. Second molars, first molars and canine width, arch perimeter, arch length and primate space were evaluated. Gender dimorphism, arch type and finger or pacifier sucking habits were also considered. It was concluded that the transverse measurements showed a significant increase in primary dentition, while the perimeter, arch length and primate spaces were stable. The first and second molars width presented gender dimorphism, with higher values in the females. Considering the perimeter, arch length and primate spaces there were no significant differences according to gender. The arch length dimensions were not different between Baume Type I and II arches, althougth Baume Type I arch width were larger than Type II. Finger and pacifier sucking habits had no effect on primary dentition dimensions during the observed period of one year.

A redução do espaço nasofaringeano devido à hipertrofia adenoideana leva a adaptações posturais da cabeça, mandíbula, língua e lábios, podendo causar alterações no padrão esquelético facial. Foram coletadas 98 teleradiografias em norma lateral de pré-adolescentes na faixa etária de 7 a 10 anos na Clínica de Ortodontia da F.O. Araraquara, as quais foram selecionadas levando-se em consideração a dimensão da imagem do espaço nasofaringeano (ENF) (correspondente à menor distância do dorso do palato mole à parede faringeana posterior). As radiografias foram divididas em 3 grupos: Grupo I (estreito), ENF entre 1,7 e 5,1mm; Grupo II (médio), ENF entre 5,2 e 7,6mm; Grupo III (amplo), ENF entre 7,7 e 12,9mm. Utilizamos duas medidas angulares e seis medidas lineares para caracterizar a morfologia facial. As médias e o desvio padrão de cada medida efetuada foram obtidas, e por meio de teste de análise de variância (ANOVA), verificou-se diferença não significativa entre os grupos para as variáveis: ANperp, p=0,07; PgNperp, p=0,058, comprimento mandibular, p=0,15, comprimento maxilar, p=0,06, diferença maxilomandibular, p=0,98, eixo facial, p=0,96, altura facial inferior, p=0,84 e significativa na variável plano mandibular (p<0,01). Portanto, a redução do espaço nasofaringeano está associada a alterações no plano mandibular, que apresentou valores maiores com a diminuição do espaço nasofaringeano.

The nasopharyngeal reduction consequent to a adenoid obstruction is reponsible to postural adaptions of the head, mandible, tongue and lips and may also lead to facial skeleton pattern alterations. Ninety-eight lateral cephalometric X-rays of 7 to 10 years old preadolescents were used considering the nasopharyngeal space width (NSW), that was correspondent to the minor distance between the soft palate and posterior nasopharyngeal wall. The radiographs were divided into 3 groups: Group I (narrow), NSW between 1.7 and 5.1mm; Group II (median), NSW between 5.2 and 7.6mm; Group III (extensive) NSW between 7.7 and 12.9mm. Two angular and six linear measurements were used to characterize the facial morphology. The means and standard deviations of each measurement were obtained and the ANOVA analysis showed no significant difference among the groups for A-Nperp, p = 0.07, Pg-Nperp, p = 0,058, mandible length, p = 0.98, facial axis, p = 0.96, lower facial height, p = 0.84 and significant difference for mandibular plane, p<0,01. So it can be concluded that the nasopharyngeal space reduction is associated with mandibular plane alterations that presented higher values when there was a nasopharyngeal space reduction.

O presente estudo foi realizado com o propósito de avaliar respostas cefalométricas ao tratamento com aparelho extrabucal de Kloehn associado ao aparelho fixo edgewise convencional. Telerradiografias iniciais (T1) e finais (T2) de dois grupos de 30 pacientes tratados com estes aparelhos foram selecionadas e definidas pelo índice cefalométrico de Jarabak para determinação do padrão esquelético craniofacial. Os grupos foram denominados favorável (hipodivergente) e desfavorável (hiperdivergente). A idade média, no início do tratamento, foi de 11,03 anos e final de 14,72 com o tempo médio de tratamento de 3,6 anos para o grupo favorável. No grupo desfavorável a idade inicial foi de 11,51 anos e final de 15,17 anos com tempo médio de tratamento de 3,4 anos. Foi utilizado um sistema de análise de resposta de tratamento em coordenadas X e Y representativos dos movimentos dentários e das bases ósseas decompondo-os em seus vetores horizontais e verticais. Os resultados e respostas do tratamento foram analisados e comparados entre os grupos favorável e desfavorável utilizando o teste t-Student. Os resultados mostraram não haver diferenças estatisticamente significantes na resposta cefalométrica no tratamento com o aparelho extrabucal de Kloehn associados ao aparelho fixo edgewise quanto aos padrões faciais favorável e desfavorável. O tratamento promoveu uma restrição do deslocamento anterior maxilar e um menor deslocamento anterior mandibular. Quanto à movimentação dentária maxilar, houve uma restrição do movimento mesial e extrusivo dos molares superiores no grupo favorável, enquanto que o movimento dos dentes inferiores foi mínimo no sentido anterior e vertical.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the cephalometric response to Kloehn extraoral associated to fixed appliances treatment. Initial cephalometric radiographs (T1) and final ones (T2) of two groups composed by 30 patients were selected according to Jarabak index as favorable (hypodivergent) and unfavorable (hyperdivergent). The mean age on the beginning of the treatment was 11.03 years and the final mean age was 14.72, with a mean treatment time of 3.6 years for the favorable group. In the unfavorable group, the initial age was of 11.51 years, and the final age of 15.17, with a mean treatment time of 3.4 years. It was used a X and Y coordinated system to response analysis, representing the dental and skeletal bases movement. The results and treatment responses were analyzed and the favorable and unfavorable groups compared using the t-Student test. There were no statistically significant differences in the cephalometric response of Kloehn extraoral associated to fixed appliances treatment between the two groups. The treatment promoted a restriction of the anterior displacement of maxillary base and a lesser mandibular anterior displacement. Considering the upper teeth movement, there was restriction of the mesial and extrusive movement of the upper molars in the favorable group while the lower teeth movement was minimum on the anterior and vertical sense.
