Resumo Em um remanescente de Floresta Ombrófila Mista Aluvial, foram abatidas 56 árvores adultas de Gymnanthes klotzschiana, árvore típica e representativa desta formação e popularmente conhecida como branquilho, às margens do rio Barigui, em Araucária - PR, o qual teve o curso de seu leito retificado na década de 1960. Considerando-se as técnicas e premissas básicas para estudos dendrocronológicos, os discos foram secos, polidos e os anéis de crescimento identificados e demarcados, para a construção de séries cronológicas e sua correlação com variáveis climáticas/ambientais. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo verificar se: (i) Gymnanthes klotzschiana apresenta características potenciais para estudos dendroecológicos; (ii) a espécie responde a estímulos ambientais e intervenções antrópicas; (iii) a estrutura etária das árvores estudadas é compatível com a ocorrência de distúrbios antrópicos na região. A análise dos resultados reforça a potencialidade da espécie em estudos dendroecológicos, considerando a sincronia dos dados e a sensibilidade às variáveis climáticas. Além disso, a idade máxima constatada das árvores analisadas é próxima ao final do ciclo de extração da madeira utilizada pelas embarcações a vapor nesta região, que preponderaram até meados da década de 1950.

Abstract In a remnant area of Alluvial Ombrophylous Forest, 56 adult trees of Gymnanthes klotzschiana, a typical and representative tree of this formation and popularly known as “branquilhos”, were slaughtered on the banks of the Barigui River, in Araucária, PR state, which the watercourse was rectified in the 1960s. Following the techniques for dendrochronological studies, the discs were dried, polished and the growth rings identified and marked, for the construction of chronological series and their correlation with climatic/environmental variables. This study aims to verify, if (i) Gymnanthes klotzschiana presents potential characteristics for dendroecological studies; (ii) the species responds to environmental stimuli and anthropogenic disturbances (iii) the age structure of the studied trees is compatible with environmental disturbances, documented for the region. The analysis of the results reinforces the potentiality of the species in dendroecological studies, considering the synchrony of the data and the sensitivity to the climatic variables. In addition, the maximum tree age corresponds to the end of the harvest intervention in this region, which prevailed until the middle of 1950s.

Resumo As atividades antrópicas bem como o uso e ocupação da terra estão intimamente ligadas à qualidade da água e do solo. Uma alternativa para avaliar suas influências na qualidade da água em corpos hídricos é através do biomonitoramento utilizando Allium cepa como organismo bioindicador. Esta técnica permite detectar anormalidades citogenéticas nas células meristemáticas radiculares de Allium cepa após o contato com a amostra de água analisada. Assim, realizou-se a avaliação do potencial genotóxico de águas do Rio da Antas no perímetro urbano do município de Irati-PR e com o auxílio de imagens orbitais fusionadas de alta resolução do satélite Geoeye, buscou-se possíveis relações com o uso e ocupação da terra do entorno deste rio. O biomonitoramento foi realizado em três pontos amostrais distintos. Integrando-se os dados, obteve-se, com o teste de Fisher e mediante uma análise de coordenadas principais (PCoA), uma igualdade estatística entre o controle negativo e o ponto 1 e entre o ponto 2 e 3, sendo que os primeiros apresentaram baixa frequência de anormalidades cromossômicas e os últimos, médias maiores. Além disso, o ponto 1 apresentou forte influência de vegetação arbórea e os pontos 2 e 3, forte influência de área urbanizada, com expressiva degradação das áreas de preservação permanente (APPs). Os resultados confirmaram a notável interferência antrópica ao ecossistema, bem como, a importância da APP na preservação e qualidade do recurso hídrico.

Abstract Anthropic activities as well as land use and occupation are closely linked to water and soil quality. An alternative to assess their influence on water quality in water bodies is through biomonitoring using Allium cepa as a bioindicator organism. This technique allows the detection of cytogenetic abnormalities in Allium cepa root meristematic cells after contact with analyzed water samples. Thus, we evaluated the genotoxic potential of water samples from the Rio das Antas (Antas River) along the urban perimeter of the city of Irati, Paraná, Brazil. With the aid of GeoEye Satellite high-resolution fused orbital images, we searched for possible relationships between the use and occupation of land around this river. Biomonitoring was performed at three different sampling points. Statistical equality between the negative control and Point 1 and between Points 2 and 3 was obtained using Fisher's test and a Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCoA). The former presented a low frequency of abnormalities chromosomes and the latter presented larger averages. In addition, Point 1 had strong influence of tree vegetation. Points 2 and 3, demonstrated a strong influence of urbanized area, with significant degradation of permanent preservation areas (áreas de preservação permanente - (APP). The results showed remarkable anthropogenic interference to the ecosystem. Furthermore, this indicates importance of an APP watercourses functioning to preserve the quality of the water resources.

ABSTRACT We examined the climatic response of Cedrela fissilis radial growth based on precipitation, air relative humidity, temperature and monthly thermal amplitude. It was intended to assess how the secondary growth of C. fissilis is influenced by the climatic variables and which one are the best growth predictors in Ombrophilous Mixed Forest, southern Brazil. Wood cores were processed using classical dendrochronology methodology. Principal Components Analysis, Generalized Linear Models and correlation were used to explore the relationship between radial growth and climate. Our results indicated that the best radial growth predictor is the temperature: the seasonal behavior, under well-watered conditions, seems to have a dominant effect on growth responses. Changes in tree growth corresponding to an increase in temperatures suggest a sensitivity of the species to climate changes. These results are important to help understand how the global warming may influence long-lived pioneer tree growth.

RESUMO Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar o desempenho da radiação ultravioleta (UV) para a desinfecção de efluente final de estação de tratamento de esgoto (ETE) sanitário municipal, em escala de bancada de laboratório e operação em batelada. Foram analisadas as interferências dos parâmetros operacionais tempo de exposição (s) à radiação e altura de lâmina líquida (cm) do efluente no reator UV. A eficiência do processo de desinfecção foi avaliada empregando os microrganismos indicadores Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens), colifagos, Escherichia coli (E. coli) e coliformes totais (CT). Após a desinfecção, foram avaliados os fenômenos de recuperação microbiológica fotorreativação e recuperação no escuro para E. coli e CT. Os resultados indicaram efetiva inativação dos microrganismos indicadores à radiação UV no decorrer do tempo de exposição, o que foi comprovado estatisticamente pela ANOVA de medidas repetidas. C. perfringens foi o microrganismo que apresentou a maior resistência à inativação. Nos ensaios de recuperação microbiológica, ambos os mecanismos foram considerados insignificantes, o que foi comprovado estatisticamente pelos testes t de Student (dados paramétricos) e Wilcoxon (dados não paramétricos). Em todas as análises, o nível de significância foi de 5%.

ABSTRACT This research aimed to evaluate the performance of ultraviolet radiation (UV) for disinfecting effluents from a municipal wastewater treatment plant, in laboratory bench scale and batch operation. The interference of the operational parameters of exposure time (s) to the radiation and the level of liquid blade (cm) of the effluent in the UV reactor were analyzed. The efficiency of the disinfection process was checked using the indicators microorganisms Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens), coliphages, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and total coliforms (TC). After disinfection, some tests were carried out to evaluate the phenomena of microbiological recovery: photoreactivation and dark repair, for E. coli and TC. The results indicate effective inactivation of indicator microorganisms by UV radiation during the time of exposure, which was statistically proved by repeated measures ANOVA. C. perfringens was the microorganism that showed the highest resistance against UV inactivation. In microbiological recovery tests, both mechanisms were considered insignificant, which was statistically proven by the Student (t test - parametric data) and the Wilcoxon (nonparametric data) tests. In all analyses, the level of significance was 5%.

ABSTRACT We investigated the use of dissolved air flotation (DAF) to treat clear water effluent from the paper industry in order to remove fibers. The dosage of polyaluminium chloride (PAC) was varied in the following concentrations: 0, 75, 100, 125, 150 and 175 mg/L; as well as bubble rise velocity of 18 and 9 cm/min for two types of paper wastewater: print and gloss. Data were statistically analyzed through factorial arrangement 6x2x2. The treatment of the print paper effluent showed better performance in removing the analyzed parameters with an optimal dosage of 100 mg/L PAC, whereas the gloss paper effluent treatment had satisfactory removal of analyzed parameters with an optimal dosage of 150 mg/L of PAC. This led to the observation that the high efficiency directly obtained with the DAF in conjunction with the use of PAC coagulant was an excellent primary treatment option for effluent resulting from the paper industry.

A redução das áreas verdes urbanas e o consequente aumento das áreas construídas é um dos temas mais discutidos atualmente. Tanto a dinâmica do uso do solo urbano quanto de mudanças climáticas podem comprovar relações entre diversos usos e ocupações do solo e suas consequências para o microclima local. Este trabalho apresenta uma avaliação da influência do uso da terra no clima urbano em uma cidade de pequeno porte. Foram selecionados 4 pontos abrangendo o perímetro urbano de Irati, no estado do Paraná, com diferentes ocupações, e obtidas variáveis de temperatura e umidade relativa com uso de higrômetros adaptados em abrigos termométricos em 4 horários distintos durante 4 dias. A utilização de imagens orbitais de alta resolução possibilitou o mapeamento do uso do solo urbano de áreas de abrangência num raio de 350 metros dos pontos pré-selecionados. Os resultados comprovaram, estatisticamente, que o uso e ocupação do solo interferem nas variáveis climáticas obtidas.

The reduction of urban green areas and consequent increase of the built areas is one of the most widely discussed topics nowadays. Both the urban land use dynamics and the climate changes may prove relationships between different uses and land occupations and their consequences for the local microclimate. This paper presents an assessment of the land use influence in the urban climate in a small town. A total of 4 points covering the urban perimeter of Irati, Paraná, with different occupations were selected and temperature and humidity variables obtained with use of adapted hygrometers in thermometric shelter in 4 different times for 4 days. The use of high resolution satellite images enabled the mapping of urban land use in catchment areas within a radius of 350 meters of pre-selected points. The results statistically showed that the use and occupation of land interfere with the climate variables obtained.

O presente estudo comparou a comunidade e a diversidade de aves em fragmentos de Floresta Ombrófila Mista de diferentes tamanhos. Para tanto, oito fragmentos divididos em conjuntos, formando duas classes (somando de 20 a 70 ha e de 100 a 420 ha), foram selecionados em quatro fazendas no distrito de Guamirim, Irati-PR. O método de amostragem consistiu em trajetos irregulares percorridos pelas áreas naturais, realizados entre 2009 e 2010, sempre na primavera e no outono. Foram calculadas a Frequência Relativa e a Diversidade mediante o índice de Shannon. As análises MRPP e Cluster, e o teste Mann-Whitney (Wilcoxon) W foram utilizados para comparar os fragmentos. Os resultados comprovam que fragmentos maiores abrigam uma comunidade distinta e mais diversa do que manchas menores do que 100 ha. Foram registradas 88 espécies pelos trajetos irregulares. Somando estas às espécies anotadas a partir de observações eventuais em qualquer área dentro das fazendas e nos seus arredores, obteve-se um total de 123 espécies registradas localmente.

This study compared the community and diversity of birds in Mixed Ombrophylous Forest fragments of different sizes. To this end, eight fragments divided into sets forming two classes (from 20 to 70 ha and 100 to 420 ha) were selected in four farms in Guamirim district, municipality of Irati, Paraná state. The sampling method consisted of irregular transects traversed by natural areas. The experiment was conducted between 2009 and 2010, always in spring and autumn. Relative Frequency and Diversity were calculated by the Shannon index. The analyses Multiple Response Permutation Procedure (MRPP), Cluster, and Mann-Whitney (Wilcoxon) W test were used to compare the fragments. The results show that larger fragments present a distinct and more diverse community than patches smaller than 100 ha. Using irregular transects, we recorded 88 species of the total of 123 species recorded on site in transects and eventual observations.
