Abstract The suitability of the motive force contributes to the efficient use of electrical energy. On the other hand, the inadequate size of electric motors is directly connected to increased investment and running costs. This article presents the theory and mainly the application of a methodology for the adequacy of the motive power. The research was conducted at the Federal University of Viçosa dairy factory. This methodology consists in measuring motor rotation, acquiring technical information from the manufacturer's manual, and identifying the type of motor load. In addition, it uses the linearization method to estimate the resistance torque in steady state. This step is achieved without the need for using additional equipment or sending the motor to a laboratory for measuring the torque. In this sense, the studies can be made during the production process. Thus, this relevant methodology has the advantage of allowing the studies to be carried out at the agro-industry facilities. After getting all the information described above, it was possible to determine whether each motor at the factory was oversized. Then, the suitable motor was selected according to the load type. The application of the methodology described herein could provide around 50.6% savings in the monthly electricity costs at the dairy factory, and an attractive internal return rate.

Neste trabalho, estratégias de controle para aeração de grãos baseadas em temporizador, termostato e termostato combinado com umidostatos foram comparadas ao controlador AERO. Apesar de simples, as três primeiras estratégias são amplamente empregadas, resultando em controles confiáveis e em grande aceitação por parte dos produtores. O AERO foi desenvolvido na Universidade Federal de Viçosa com o objetivo de difundir e facilitar a utilização de estratégias mais sofisticadas pelos produtores. Este controlador atua com base em dados medidos em tempo real e na simulação do processo de aeração. Os resultados mostraram que os tempos requeridos para aeração, além dos níveis de deterioração, das temperaturas e dos teores finais de água dos grãos foram parecidos para as quatro estratégias analisadas quando se considerou as melhores configurações para as três estratégias simples. Entretanto, o AERO apresentou um controle mais eficiente, resfriando a massa de grãos mais rapidamente e minimizando as oscilações de temperatura e de teor de água dos grãos durante o processo de aeração. Outra vantagem do AERO é sua capacidade de ajustar automaticamente as suas condições de controle de acordo com as condições climáticas da região onde o sistema está implantado.

In this work, control strategies for grain aeration based on timer, thermostat and thermostat combined with humidistats were compared to the AERO controller. In spite of the simplicity of the first three strategies, they are widely used, resulting in reliable control and high acceptance by farmers. AERO was developed at the Federal University of Viçosa to spread and facilitate the use of more sophisticated strategies by farmers. This controller is based on real time data acquisition and process simulation. The results showed that aeration time, as well as final grain deterioration rates, temperatures and moisture contents were similar among the four strategies, when considering the best set-points of the three simple controllers. However, AERO resulted in a more effective control, cooling the grain mass more quickly and reducing temperature and moisture content oscillations during the aeration process. Another advantage of AERO is its capacity of automatically adjust its set-points according to the weather conditions of the region where the aeration system is operating.

Com o objetivo de identificar parâmetros de decréscimos de qualidade de milho-pipoca, foram avaliados os efeitos dos métodos de colheita e debulha de grãos, dos teores de umidade inicial, da temperatura do ar de secagem e do tempo de armazenamento sobre a capacidade de expansão das cultivares Zélia e CMS 43. A colheita foi realizada quando ambas as cultivares de milho-pipoca atingiram o teor de umidade de 19% b.u. e, posteriormente, 15% b.u. Foram utilizadas a colheita e debulha manuais e a colheita mecânica com diferentes velocidades do cilindro debulhador. O produto foi submetido à secagem artificial em camada fina. Periodicamente, realizou-se o teste-padrão de qualidade relativo à capacidade de expansão do milho-pipoca. A qualidade do grão foi afetada significativamente pela colheita mecânica e pelo aumento da temperatura do ar de secagem mas não foi reduzida durante o armazenamento. Os melhores valores de capacidade de expansão, com relação à maioria dos tratamentos, foram obtidos depois de 270 dias de armazenamento. O milho-pipoca da cultivar Zélia apresentou-se com qualidade comercial superior à da cultivar CMS 43, porém é necessário salientar que esta última encontra-se ainda em fase de desenvolvimento e melhoramento genético.

Aiming to identify parameters of popcorn quality decreases, the effects of harvest and shelling methods, initial moisture contents, drying air temperature and storage time on the expansion capacity of the Zélia and CMS 43 cultivars were evaluated. The harvest was performed when both popcorn varieties reached moisture contents of 19% w.b. and, further, 15% w.b. Manual harvest and shelling and mechanic harvest with different speeds of the shelling cylinder were used. The product was submitted to artificial drying process in thin layers and also to natural drying. Periodically a quality pattern-test related to the popcorn expansion capacity was performed. The grain quality was significantly affected by mechanical harvest and by increase in the drying air temperature; there was no decrease on the physiological quality of the popcorn during the storage; the best values of expansion capacity, for most of the treatments, were obtained after 270 days of storage. The popcorn of Zélia variety showed superior commercial quality compared to the variety CMS 43. However, it is necessary to stress the fact that the latter is still in stage of development and genetic breeding.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito da atmosfera modificada (100% CO2) associada a doses de fosfina no controle de Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky). Concluiu-se que: o aumento do período de exposição resultou no aumento da eficácia dos tratamentos; as pupas de S. zeamais foram mais tolerantes aos tratamentos, enquanto os ovos e as larvas de primeiro ínstar foram mais sensíveis e que a concentração de 0,75 g m-3 de fosfina, associada à atmosfera contendo 100% de CO2, no período de 120 h de exposição, é a mínima necessária para o controle efetivo de todas as fases de desenvolvimento do S. zeamais.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of a modified atmosphere (100% of CO2) associated with three phosphine concentrations (0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 g m-3), on the control of different stages of development of the insect Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky). It was concluded that, in general, (1) an increase in the exposure period caused an increase in the effectiveness of both the treatments with atmosphere containing 100% of CO2 and atmosphere with ambient air, associated to the phosphine, for all development stages of Sitophilus zeamais; (2) the pupae of Sitophilus zeamais were the ones with the highest tolerance to the treatments used for control, while the eggs and larvae from the first instar were the ones with lesser tolerance; (4) the concentration of 0.75 g m-3 of phosphine associated to the atmosphere containing 100% of CO2, for the exposure period of 120 h, was the minimum necessary to effectively control all development stages of Sitophilus zeamais.

RESUMO Este trabalho foi realizado com o intuito de se avaliar danos mecânicos em sementes de feijão ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) variedade Ouro Negro 1992, por meio de condutividade elétrica da solução contendo as sementes danificadas devido ao choque mecânico controlado, com utilização de três níveis de velocidade de choque. Para se comparar a queda de qualidade devido ao choque mecânico, foram utilizados também o teste-padrão de germinação e a avaliação visual dos danos mecânicos, cujos resultados permitiram concluir que a utilização da condutividade elétrica da solução contendo as sementes pode ser correlacionada com o índice de danos mecânicos podendo, portanto, ser utilizada para avaliar danos mecânicos em sementes.

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to evaluate mechanical damages in edible black bean seeds ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.), variety "Ouro Negro 1992", caused by controlled mechanical impact by measuring the electrical conductivity of the solution containing the seeds. Three levels of mechanical impact were used in the experiment. The standard germination test was also used to compare the decrease in the seed quality. The results led to conclude that the electrical conductivity of the solution containing the seeds may be correlated to the mechanical damage and therefore, can be used to evaluate mechanical damages in seeds.

RESUMO Vários fatores afetam a qualidade do milho-pipoca, dentre os quais se encontram as propriedades físicas, como tamanho dos grãos e massa específica unitária e aparente e porosidade da massa granular. Para se avaliar a influência do processo de secagem sobre a massa específica e a porosidade da massa granular, teve-se por objetivo, com este trabalho, determinar as propriedades físicas para duas cultivares de milho-pipoca, em função do teor de umidade. Para obtenção dos resultados foram utilizados grãos de milho-pipoca das cultivares Zélia e CMS 43, submetidas ao processo de secagem a 40 °C; simultaneamente, determinou-se a massa específica aparente e real de ambas as cultivares, a vários níveis de teor de umidade. A faixa de teor de umidade utilizada foi de 10,2 a 17,2% b.u. e 10,4 a 19,4% b.u., respectivamente, para as cultivares Zélia e CMS 43 e os valores médios obtidos foram: 768 e 767 kg m -3 para massa específica aparente, 1.242 e 1.332 kg-m -3 para massa específica real e 38 e 42 % para porosidade da massa granular. O comportamento das propriedades físicas, em relação à influência do processo de secagem, apresentou características semelhantes às de outras variedades de milho.

ABSTRACT Several factors may affect the popcorn quality, physical properties such as grain size, porosity and density being the most important. The objective of this research was to evaluate effects of the drying process on these physical properties for two popcorn varieties as a function of the moisture content. The popcorn grains from Zélia and CMS 43 varieties were utilized in this study and subjected to the drying process at 40°C. Simultaneously, the bulk and unit density for both varieties at several moisture contents were determined. The range of moisture content utilized was 10.2 - 17.2% w.b. and 10,4 - 19,4% w.b. for the varieties Zélia and CMS 43, respectively. The meam values obtained for bulk density were: 768 and 767 kg m-3; for unity density 1,242 and 1,332 kg m-3, and for porosity, 38 and 42% for the Zélia and CMS 43 varieties, respectively. The behavior of the physical properties, in relation to the influence of the drying process, was similar to other varieties of corn.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar as curvas de umidade de equilíbrio higroscópico e o calor latente de vaporização para as sementes de milho pipoca (Zea mays). O teor de umidade inicial das sementes era 23% b.u. As sementes foram submetidas a dessorção, sob diversas condições de temperatura (20, 30, 40 e 50°C) e umidade relativa do ar (30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 e 90%) com três repetições, até atingirem a umidade de equilíbrio. A temperatura e a umidade relativa do ar foram controladas por meio de uma unidade condicionadora de ar "Aminco-Air". Os seguintes modelos matemáticos foram ajustados aos dados experimentais: Henderson, Henderson modificado, Chung-Pfost, Copace e Sigma-Copace; as constantes dessas equações foram obtidas por regressão, enquanto o calor latente de vaporização foi calculado utilizando-se a equação de Henderson modificada, estimando-se uma equação empírica para calcular o calor latente de vaporização para o milho pipoca, em função da temperatura e do teor de umidade do grão. De acordo com os resultados obtidos concluiu-se que as equações de Copace e Sigma-Copace foram as que melhor se ajustaram aos dados experimentais, em todas as faixas estudadas de temperatura e umidade relativa do ar, podendo ser utilizadas para se calcular a umidade de equilíbrio das sementes de milho pipoca. A equação empírica determinada para calcular o calor latente de vaporização da água dos grãos do milho pipoca mostrou-se adequada.

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to determine the experimental equilibrium moisture content curves (EMC) and latent heat of vaporization (LHV) for popcorn (Zea mays) seeds. The initial moisture content of the seeds was 23% (wetted basis). The seeds were submitted to dessorption under different temperatures (20, 30, 40 and 50ºC) and air relative humidities (30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90%) with three replications, until reaching the moisture equilibrium. An "Aminco-Air" air conditioning unit controlled the temperature and relative humidity of the air. The following mathematical models were fitted to the experimental data: Henderson, modified Henderson, Chung-Pfost, Copace and Sigma-Copace. The constants for these equations were obtained by regression, while the latent heat of vaporization was calculated using the modified Henderson equation, fitting an empirical equation to estimate the latent heat of vaporization for the popcorn as a function of temperature and moisture content. According to the results obtained, it was concluded that the Copace and Sigma-Copace equations were the ones that best fitted to the experimental data, for all studied ranges of temperature and relative humidity of the air, and might be used to calculate the equilibrium moisture content for popcorn seeds. The fitted empirical equation for calculating the LHV of popcorn seeds proved to be adequate.
