Abstract Objective: To audit our experience with Choanal Atresia (CA). Study design: Observational retrospective study. Material/Methods: Clinical data of all CA patients followed from 2003 to 2020 at Hospital Central do Funchal were analysed. Results: Eleven patients were included and 63,64% were females. They were divided into two groups: Unilateral (63,64%) and bilateral atresia (36,36%). In both groups, mixed type atresia was the most common. Regarding unilateral group, endoscopic repair was performed in 85,71% of cases (71,4% with stents) at a median age of 15 years old. Median number of surgeries was 1,29. Bilateral group had more congenital malformations (50%) and had more reinterventions. All patients underwent an endoscopic approach at a median age of 8 days old. Conclusions: Associated malformations, younger age at first surgery and higher number of surgeries were more associated to bilateral CA.

Resumo Objetivo : Descrever a experiência do Serviço de Otorrinolarinogologia do Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça com Atrésia das Coanas (AC). Desenho do estudo: Observacional retrospectivo. Material/Métodos: Analisaram-se os dados clínicos de todos os doentes com AC de 2003-2020 do Hospital Central do Funchal. Resultados: Dos onze doentes incluídos, 63,64% eram do sexo feminino e 36,36% eram do sexo masculino. As onze crianças estudadas foram divididas em dois grupos: AC unilateral (63,64%) e bilateral (36,36%). Nos dois grupos, o tipo misto foi o mais comum. Na AC unilateral, a correção endoscópica foi realizada em 85,71% dos casos (71,4% com stents) com idade média de 15 anos. Foi realizada uma média de 1,29 cirurgias. O grupo bilateral apresentou mais malformações congénitas (50%) e apresentou mais reintervenções. Todos foram submetidos a cirurgia endoscópica (idade média: 8 dias). Conclusões: Malformações associadas, idade mais jovem na primeira cirurgia e maior número de cirurgias estiveram mais associadas à AC bilateral.

Abstract The humid forest zones of northeastern Brazil are recognized as endemic hotspots for pseudothelphusid crabs. In this study, we report new occurrence records of the pseudothelphusids, Fredius ibiapaba and Kingsleya attenboroughi, in humid soil and streams within humid forests of the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. These new records expand the geographical distribution of these crabs, highlighting their potential to inhabit humid forests throughout this region. ABSTRACT The production and consumption of pecan nuts have been on the rise in recent times, which renders it necessary to study the best production practices to increase the yield, enhance the flavor, and maintain the bioactive components in the final product. The present study, therefore, aimed to verify the effects of tree thinning on the physicochemical characteristics and bioactive components in pecan under the cultivation conditions of Santa Rosa, Rio Grande do Sul. The pecan plants were submitted to two types of management - with thinning and without thinning, following which the fruits were evaluated for physical (size, weight, and color) and chemical (physicochemical composition, oxidative stability, fatty acid profile, and tocopherols) attributes. The results revealed that the thinning of plants increased the size and mass of both nuts and kernels while reducing the acid content and peroxides in the kernels and increasing the γ-tocopherol levels. RESUMO A produção e consumo de nozes vem aumentando nos últimos tempos, e com isso, há de se estudar as melhores práticas de produção, que aumentem a quantidade produzida e favoreçam ou mantenham os compostos bioativos presentes. Nesse sentido, esse trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a interferência do desbaste de plantas nas características físico-químicas e compostos bioativos da noz-pecã nas condições de Santa Rosa, Rio Grande do Sul. Para isso, as plantas foram submetidas a dois tipos de manejo: com desbaste e sem desbaste de plantas e os frutos foram avaliados quanto a características físicas (tamanho, peso e cor) e químicas (composição físico-química, estabilidade oxidativa, perfil de ácidos graxos e tocoferóis). ABSTRACT: The production of pecan [Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch] is increasing in Brazil, especially in the Rio Grande do Sul, which accounts for approximately 70% of the country’s production. The importance of pecan farming for the state, particularly for the southern half, which is characterized by extensive livestock farming and the monoculture of rice and soybeans, is related both to the possibility of increasing diversification and to the aggregation of extra income in rural areas. In this context, this research estimated the production costs and economic viability of a small family property, which is the common scale of pecan production in the Rio Grande do Sul. The production costs were collected from a real farm for a 7-year period, and then projected until the 30th year. All the monetary values were updated for June 2022, and the production cost methodology determined by the Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento (CONAB) was adopted. The results showed that the enterprise was not economically viable over a 30-year horizon. RESUMO: A produção de noz-pecã encontra-se em crescimento no Brasil, especialmente no Rio Grande do Sul, que responde por aproximadamente 70% da produção do país. A importância da pecanicultura para o Estado, particularmente para a metade sul, que desenvolve uma pecuária extensiva e a monocultura do arroz e da soja, está relacionada tanto com a possibilidade de aumento da diversificação, quanto com a agregação de uma receita extra nas propriedades rurais. Neste sentido, este trabalho teve como objetivo estimar os custos de produção e a viabilidade econômica de uma pequena propriedade familiar, produtora de noz-pecã em nível comercial no Rio Grande do Sul. Os custos de produção foram levantados pelo período de sete anos e projetados até o trigésimo ano. Os valores monetários foram atualizados para o mês de junho de 2022 e adotou-se a metodologia de custos de produção determinada pela Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento - CONAB. Os resultados demonstraram que o empreendimento não foi economicamente viável no horizonte de 30 anos. Biopolymers such as PLA, ZnO nanoparticles and chitosan are materials that have some properties in common, such as oxidizing action, antimicrobial activity, biocompatibility and formation of a mechanical barrier, which make them promising for application in food packaging, as they ensure safety in contact with food. In this study, the antibacterial activity of pure PLA films and those incorporating chitosan, ZnO nanoparticles and both was analyzed for four strains (two Gram-positive and two Gram-negative bacteria) by the agar diffusion method, aiming to verify the action of each substance and their combination. The characterization of ZnO NPs was performed by XRD, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis, SEM and Zeta potential (ZP) methods. The results showed that the ZnO nanoparticles synthesized by the Pechinhi method, with calcination temperatures of 600 and 800ºC, presented a predominant morphology of nanorods and nanospheres, according to SEM images, with high purity and crystallinity. The PLA-based films presented a rough structure, with small pores, and the incorporation of chitosan and ZnO NPs was effective, which was proven by the SEM/EDS technique. Abstract The objective of this work was to estimate the genetic parameters of pecan (Carya illinoinensis) cultivars through mixed model analyses of data on vegetative growth, fruit production, and fruit quality traits. The study was conducted from 2021 to 2023, using the Barton, Desirable, Elliot, Mohawk, Jackson, Shoshoni, Stuart, and Success pecan cultivars, in the municipality of Santana do Livramento, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized. Each replicate was composed of ten plants, totaling 80 plots. Nut vegetative growth, production, and quality were evaluated. The influence of the genotype x environment interaction on production traits and nut quality was confirmed. However, these effects were not observed on vegetative growth. Production per plant and productivity per hectare exhibited positive correlations with production efficiency in relation to canopy volume. For the vegetative and production traits, broad-sense individual heritability is low, suggesting a strong environmental influence. However, for the fruit quality traits, heritability is medium to high, indicating a greater genetic contribution and, therefore, a greater potential for response to selection. Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar os parâmetros genéticos de cultivares de nogueira-pecã (Carya illinoinensis) por meio de análises com modelos mistos dos dados de características de crescimento vegetativo, produção de frutos e qualidade de frutos. O estudo foi conduzido de 2021 a 2023, tendo-se utilizado as cultivares de nogueira-pecã Barton, Desirable, Elliot, Mohawk, Jackson, Shoshoni, Stuart e Success, no município de Santana do Livramento, no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado. Cada repetição foi composta por dez plantas, tendo totalizado 80 parcelas. Foram avaliados o crescimento vegetativo, a produção e a qualidade das nozes. Confirmou-se a influência da interação genótipo x ambiente para os caracteres produtivos e de qualidade das nozes. Abstract This study evaluated the influence of heating temperature variability on the degradation level of concrete by varying the exposure temperatures (200°C, 450°C, and 800°C) and concrete design strength (C25 and C40). The concretes were submitted to ultrasound tests (before and after heating) and then were ruptured by axial compression. After rupture, samples were taken from the fracture section of the specimens for microstructural analysis by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and molecular analysis by Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the residual strength of the concrete can change significantly (values differing by more than 100%) with temperature variability in the oven. There were physicochemical changes in the concrete constituents. The variations in Raman spectra and morphological changes (SEM images) allowed to analyze the variation in the level of degradation of concrete after exposure to fire, at the same firing step, due to temperature variation in the ovens, being compatible with the results of compressive strength and ultrasonic wave propagation velocity (UPV). Resumo Este estudo avaliou a influência da variabilidade da temperatura de aquecimento no nível de degradação de concretos, variando-se temperatura de exposição (200°C, 450°C e 800°C) e resistência de projeto do concreto (C25 e C40). Os concretos foram submetidos a ensaios de ultrassom (antes e depois do aquecimento), e, posteriormente, foram rompidos à compressão axial. Após a ruptura foram retiradas amostras da seção de fratura dos corpos de prova para análises microestruturais, por microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV), e análises moleculares, por espectroscopia Raman. Os resultados mostraram que a resistência residual dos concretos pode mudar de maneira significativa (valores divergindo em mais de 100%) com a variabilidade de temperatura no forno. Houve alterações físico-químicas dos constituintes do concreto. As variações nos espectros Raman e as alterações morfológicas (imagens em MEV) permitiram verificar a variação do nível de degradação do concreto após exposição ao fogo, em uma mesma etapa de queima, devido variação de temperatura nos fornos, sendo compatíveis com os resultados de resistência à compressão e com os de ultrassom (velocidade do pulso ultrassônico). Abstract The adnexa fetal tissues are sources of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) due to their noninvasive harvest, with all biological material discarded most of the time. MSCs are a promise regarding to their plasticity, self-renewal, differentiation potentials, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, which have made clinical stem cell therapy a reality. The present study aimed to characterize and evaluate the immunomodulation ability of bovine mesenchymal cells collected from bovine amniotic fluid (bAFMSCs) isolated and subjected to sixth consecutive culture passages in vitro. The multilineage properties of the bAFMSCs collections confirmed the ability to undergo adipogenic, chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation. The mesenchymal gene transcription CD106, CD73, CD29, CD90 and CD166 were detected in bAFMSCs, whereas CD34 and CD45 were not detected. Resumo O objetivo desta pesquisa é avaliar a eficácia do uso de LBP (laser de baixa potência) na redução da dor, edema e trismo após exodontia de terceiros molares inferiores impactados. Ensaio clínico randomizado triplo-cego do tipo boca dividida foi realizado na Universidade Federal do Ceará. Para os critérios de inclusão era necessário que o paciente apresentasse indicação clara para a remoção de ambos os terceiros molares inferiores, além da obrigatoriedade de que ambos os molares estivessem em posições semelhantes segundo Winter (1926) e Pell & Gregory (1933). Os terceiros molares (38 e 48) foram alocados aleatoriamente no grupo teste que recebeu o protocolo de aplicação dO LBP e no grupo placebo que recebeu a simulação do protocolo, perfazendo uma amostra total de 44 cirurgias. Os pacientes do grupo teste usaram em média 1/2 da quantidade de analgésicos do que os do grupo placebo, porém, apenas nos dias quatro e cinco houve diferença estatisticamente significativa. Em relação ao trismo, o grupo teste apresentou melhores indicadores tanto em 48 horas quanto em 7 dias após a cirurgia em relação ao grupo placebo, mas sem diferença estatisticamente significante. Em relação ao edema, houve medidas na amostra favoráveis ao grupo teste e medidas favoráveis ao grupo placebo, mas nenhuma das medidas obteve diferença estatisticamente significativa. Abstract The objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of using LPL (Low power laser) to reduce pain, edema, and trismus after impacted lower third molar extraction. A split-mouth randomized triple-blind clinical trial was conducted at the Federal University of Ceará. For inclusion criteria, it was necessary that the patient presented a clear indication for removal of both lower third molars, in addition to both molars being in similar positions. The third molars (38 and 48) were randomly allocated to the test group that received the LPL application protocol, and to the placebo group that received a simulation of the protocol, making a total sample of 44 surgeries. Patients in the test group used an average of 50% of the amount of analgesics that was used by the placebo group, however, there was a statistically significant difference only on days four and five. Regarding trismus, the test group presented wide mouth openings, both at 48 hours and at 7 days after surgery compared to the placebo group, but without a statistically significant difference. For edema, we noted an equilibrium between the test group and the placebo group, but no measurement obtained a statistically significant difference. The use of LPL presented better pain and trismus indicators after complex extractions. The use of LPL is thus indicated as a complementary therapy to reduce postoperative discomfort caused by complex tooth extractions. Resumen Este artículo, elaborado desde una perspectiva de revisión historiográfica, presenta algunos apuntes para comprender las circunstancias, impactos y consecuencias de dos momentos asumidos de manera general en la historiografía de la arquitectura moderna en Brasil, a lo largo del siglo XX, como los más significativos para entender los vínculos y desdoblamientos de la relación entre enseñanza profesional, institucionalización de la profesión y la consolidación de poéticas arquitectónicas o escuelas. Nos interesa destacar el paso de Lúcio Costa por la dirección de la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, en 1930, normalmente considerado en la historiografía como uno de los antecedentes fundamentales para la constitución de la escuela carioca, que hasta el evento límite de Brasilia será asimilada a la idea de una arquitectura moderna y brasileña y, dos décadas después, la llamada Reforma de 1962 en la Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de São Paulo que marcará la consolidación del liderazgo de Vilanova Artigas y el surgimiento de la llamada escuela paulista o brutalismo paulista.

Abstract This article, produced from the perspective of a historiographical revision, presents some remarks in order to understand the circumstances, impacts and consequences of two moments generally assumed, in the historiography of modern architecture in Brazil throughout the 20th century, to be the most significant to understand the bonds and unbindings of the relationship between professional education, institutionalization of the profession and the consolidation of architectural poetics or schools. We are interested in highlighting the role of Lúcio Costa as principal of the National School of Fine Arts, in 1930, usually considered, in historiography, one of the fundamental precedents for the constitution of the carioca school which, until the ultimate event of Brasilia, will be assimilated to the idea of a modern Brazilian architecture and, two decades later, the so-called 1962 Reform in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of São Paulo that will mark the consolidation of the leadership of Vilanova Artigas and the emergence of the so-called paulista school or paulista brutalism.

Abstract Introduction: Aortic aneurysms affect 3.3% of adults and there is a growing burden of small aneurysms detected, which may grow to need surgical repair. Still, we rely only on surgical therapy for this disease, left to monitor patients until they are candidates for treatment. Pharmacologic therapies have long been proposed and studied and still we have no evidence supporting drug therapy in small aneurysms. In this report we make a narrative review of basic molecular aspects of aneurysm disease and of evidence behind drug therapies that have been proposed and studied throughout the last decades.

ABSTRACT Chill is a limiting factor in commercial production of temperate fruit due to their dormancy mechanism. Thus, knowledge of chill requirements of cultivars is important to reach successful production. This study aimed at evaluating responses given by different pecan cultivars subject to artificial chill. Pecan branches were collected from twelve 9-year-old cultivars – Success, Shoshoni, Farley, Elliott, Mohawk, Jackson, Desirable, Barton, Importada, Shawnee, Choctaw and Melhorada – in two orchards located in Canguçu, Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state, Brazil, in 2017 and 2018. Treatments consisted in exposing branches to 0, 250, 500, 750 and 1,000 chill hours in a cold chamber (4.0 ± 0.5 °C) and then taking them to the germination chamber (25 ± 0.5 °C and photoperiod of 16 hours of light) until the end of the evaluations. Final budbreak rate (FBR) of every cultivar and the number of days required to reach 50% of budbreak (DD50%) were evaluated. Chill required by cultivars to start budbreak varied in both years under evaluation. Both FBR and DD50 were higher in 2017 than in 2018.
