Abstract This contribution includes the analysis of 39 pieces of the Vertebrate Paleontology Collection of the Argentinean Museum of Natural Sciences “Bernardino Rivadavia”. These specimens were acquired before 1925 from the Heidelberger Mineralien-Comptoir company, which was a firm specialized in mineral and fossil commer cialization during XIX and beginning of the XX centuries. The aim of the present work is to analyze the acquisi tion of this small collection by means of the Museum, the characterization of the specimens, its catalogue, and old labels. In this way, its scientific, patrimonial and historical value are enhanced. Even today, in the second decade of the XXI century, it plays an important educational role given that some of these specimens are displayed in the Museum´s exhibition.

Resumen En la presente contribución se da a conocer un conjunto de 39 piezas que forman parte de la Colección de Paleontología de Vertebrados del Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales “Bernardino Rivadavia”. Este con junto de piezas fue adquirido con anterioridad a 1925 de la empresa Heidelberger Mineralien-Comptoir, que entre el siglo XIX y comienzos del XX se dedicaba a la comercialización de piezas fósiles y mineralogía. La finalidad de este trabajo es la de indagar sobre la historia de la adquisición de dicha colección, las características de los mate riales que la componen, su catálogo y antiguas etiquetas. Se pretende de esta forma destacar el valor científico, histórico y patrimonial que presenta la colección. Aún hoy, en la segunda década del siglo XXI juega un rol didác tico importante dado que parte de estos materiales se exhibe en las salas del Museo.

Abstract The record of Cretaceous terrestrial lizards (Squamata) in South America is patchy, with seven species described from north-eastern and south-eastern Brazil, and few isolated records of iguanians and scincomorphans from the Argentinian Patagonia. Herein we describe a new genus and species of Cretaceous lizard, Paleochelco occultato gen. et sp. nov., based on a partial skull (MACN-Pv-N 120) discovered about three decades ago that was unnoticed in the Colección Paleovertebrados of the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales “Bernardino Rivadavia”. It comes from rocks of the Upper Cretaceous Bajo de la Carpa Formation (Neuquén Group) exposed at the Campus of the Universidad Nacional del Comahue, north of Neuquén City (Neuquén Province). The new taxon was included into a broad phylogenetic dataset of squamates and it was recovered around the base of Polyglyphanodontia in a constrained analysis using a total-evidence backbone. By contrast, the same, but topo logically unconstrained analysis found Paleochelco occultato also around the base of Polyglyphanodontia but al ternatively as the sister taxon to Polyglyphanodontia + Scleroglossa or as one of the sister taxa to the Mosasauria + Scleroglossa clade. The new finding, as well as other records from Argentina and Brazil, highlights a complex, still unrecovered, evolutionary history for lizards in the Mesozoic of South America.

Resumen El registro de lagartos (Squamata) terrestres del Cretácico de América del Sur es escaso, con siete especies descritas para el noreste y sureste de Brasil, y unos pocos registros aislados de iguanios y escincomorfos de la Patagonia argentina. Aquí describimos un nuevo gé nero y especie de lagarto cretácico, Paleochelco occultato gen. et sp. nov., basado en un cráneo parcial (MACN-Pv-N 120) descubierto hace más de tres décadas, que pasó desapercibido en la Colección Paleovertebrados del Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales “Bernardino Rivadavia”. Este espécimen proviene de rocas del Cretácico Superior de la Formación Bajo de la Carpa (Grupo Neuquén), expuestas en el Campus de la Universidad Nacional del Comahue, al norte de la Ciudad de Neuquén (Provincia del Neuquén). El nuevo taxón se incluyó en una amplia matriz filogenética de Squamata y fue recuperado alrededor de la base de Polyglyphanodontia en un análisis con restricción topológica siguiendo una topología basada en evidencia total. En contraste, el mismo análisis, pero sin la restricción topológica, encontró a Paleochelco occultato también alrededor de la base de Polyglyphanodontia pero alternativamente como el taxón hermano de Polyglyphanodontia + Scleroglossa o como uno de los taxones hermanos del clado Mosasauria + Scleroglossa. El nuevo hallazgo, así como otros registros de Argentina y Brasil, destaca una historia evolutiva compleja, aún poco conocida, de los lagartos en el Mesozoico de América del Sur.

Abstract Recently, the morphology and encephalization of the brain endocast of the Triassic non-mammaliaform probainognathian cynodont Riograndia guaibensis were studied. Here, we analyzed the brain endocast of an additional specimen of this species. The new endocast shows well-defined olfactory bulbs and a median sulcus dividing the hemispheres, traits that were not clearly observed in the first studied specimen. Encephalization quotients were also calculated, revealing similar values to other non-mammaliaform cynodonts and lower than those of the first analyzed specimen. The analyzed cranium is slightly larger than the first studied one and may represent an advanced ontogenetic stage. Hence, these differences may be related to the intraspecific variation of this cynodont or alternatively, to the preservation of each specimen.

The first fossil remains of vertebrates, invertebrates, plants and palynomorphs of the Chorrillo Formation (Austral Basin), about 30km to the SW of the town of El Calafate (Province of Santa Cruz), are described. Fossils include the elasmarian (basal Iguanodontia) Isasicursor santacrucensis gen. et sp. nov., the large titanosaur Nullotitan glaciaris gen. et sp. nov., both large and small Megaraptoridae indet., and fragments of sauropod and theropod eggshells. The list of vertebrates is also composed by the Neognathae Kookne yeutensis gen. et sp. nov., two isolated caudal vertebrae of Mammalia indet., and isolated teeth of a large mosasaur. Remains of fishes, anurans, turtles, and snakes are represented by fragmentary material of low taxonomical value, with the exception of remains belonging to Calyptocephalellidae. On the other hand, a remarkable diversity of terrestrial and freshwater gastropods has been documented, as well as fossil woods and palinological assemblages. The Chorrillo Formation continues south, in the Las Chinas River valley, southern Chile, where it is called Dorotea Formation. Both units share in their lower two thirds abundant materials of titanosaurs, whose remains cease to appear in the upper third, registering only elasmarians (Chorrillo Formation) and hadrosaurs (Dorotea Formation). Above both units there are levels with remains of invertebrates and marine reptiles. It is striking that the dinosaurs of the lower two thirds of the Chorrillo and Dorotea formations are represented by large basal titanosaurs and Megaraptoridae coelurosaurs, being the Saltasaurinae and Aeolosaurinae sauropods and Abelisauridae theropods totally absent. In contrast, these taxa are dominant components in sedimentary units of central and northern Patagonia (e.g., Allen, Los Alamitos, La Colonia formations). Such differences could reflect, in part, a greater antiquity (i.e., late Campanian-early Maastrichtian) for the Chorrillo fossils, or, more probably, different environmental conditions. Thus, knowledge of the biota of the southern tip of Patagonia is expanded, particularly those temporarily close to the K-Pg boundary.

Se describen los primeros restos fósiles de vertebrados, invertebrados, plantas y palinomorfos de la Formación Chorrillo (Cuenca Austral), aflorante unos 30km al SW de la localidad de El Calafate (Provincia de Santa Cruz). Los fósiles de dinosaurios no avianos incluyen el elasmariano (Iguanodontia basal) Isasicursor santacrucensis gen. et sp. nov., el titanosaurio gigante Nullotitan glaciaris gen. et sp. nov., Megaraptoridae indet. de tamaños pequeño y grande, y fragmentos de cáscaras de huevo pertenecientes a saurópodos y terópodos. La lista de vertebrados se compone también del Neognathae Kookne yeutensis gen. et sp. nov., dos vértebras caudales aisladas de Mammalia indet., y dientes aislados de un mosasaurio de gran tamaño. Han sido colectados también restos de peces, anuros, tortugas y serpientes los cuales están representados por material fragmentario de escaso valor taxonómico, con la excepción de restos pertenecientes a Calyptocephalellidae. Por otra parte, ha sido documentada una notable diversidad de gasterópodos terrestres y dulceacuícolas, así como leños fósiles y asociaciones palinológicas. La Formación Chorrillo se continúa hacia el sur, en el valle del río Las Chinas, Chile, en donde es denominada Formación Dorotea. Ambas unidades comparten en sus dos tercios inferiores abundante material de titanosaurios, cuyos restos dejan de aparecer en el tercio superior, registrándose solo elasmarianos (Fm Chorrillo) y hadrosaurios (Fm Dorotea). Por encima de ambas unidades existen niveles con restos de invertebrados y reptiles marinos. Llama la atención que los dinosaurios de los dos tercios inferiores de las formaciones Chorrillo y Dorotea estén representados por titanosaurios basales de gran tamaño y celurosaurios Megaraptoridae, estando ausentes los Saltasaurinae, Aeolosaurinae y Abelisauridae, los cuales son componentes dominantes en las unidades sedimentarias del Maastrichtiano de la provincia de Chubut y del norte patagónico (p.ej., formaciones Allen, Los Alamitos y La Colonia, por ejemplo). Estas diferencias podrían reflejar, en parte, una mayor antigüedad (i.e., Campaniano tardío -Maastrichtiano temprano) para los fósiles de Chorrillo. Se amplía así el conocimiento de las biotas del extremo sur de Patagonia, en particular de aquellas temporalmente cercanas al límite K-Pg.

Nós reportamos aqui um novo cinodonte prozostrodonte, Botucaraitherium belarminoigen. et sp. nov., do Triássico Tardio da Zona de Assembleia (ZA) de Riograndia da Sequência Candelária (Supersequência Santa Maria), coletado no afloramento Sítio Botucaraí, no município de Candelária, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. O novo táxon está baseado em um único espécime (holótipo MMACR-PV003-T) o qual inclui a mandíbula esquerda, sem os ossos pós-dentários, com a raiz do último incisivo preservada, o canino e quatro dentes pós-caninos, além de uma coroa parcial, não erupcionada, do quinto pós-canino, e dois fragmentos maxilares, um com um canino quebrado, e outro portando apenas um dente pós-canino. As feições mandibulares e dentárias assemelham-se àquelas dos cinodontes prozostrodontes Prozostrodon brasiliensisda ZAde Hyperodapedon,mais antiga, e de Brasilodon quadrangularis e Brasilitherium riograndensis da mesma ZA de Riograndia. A inclusão de Botucaraitherium em uma ampla análise filogenética posicionou-o como um táxon mais derivado do que os tritilodontídeos, sendo o táxon-irmão de Brasilodon, Brasilitheriume mais Mammaliaformes. Apesar de o novo táxon ser baseado em poucos elementos cranianos, ele representa um componente faunístico adicional na ZA de Riograndiado Triássico sul-brasileiro, na qual os cinodontes não-mamaliaformes de pequeno tamanho, intimamente relacionados à origem dos mamíferos, foram ecologicamente bem sucedidos e taxonomicamente diversos.

We report here on a new prozostrodontian cynodont, Botucaraitherium belarminoigen. et sp. nov., from the Late Triassic RiograndiaAssemblage Zone (AZ) of the Candelária Sequence (Santa Maria Supersequence), collected in the Botucaraí Hill Site, Candelária Municipality, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The new taxon is based on a single specimen (holotype MMACR-PV-003-T) which includes the left lower jaw, without postdentary bones, bearing the root of the last incisor, canine and four postcanines plus one partial crown inside the dentary, not erupted, and two maxillary fragments, one with a broken canine and another with one postcanine. The features of the lower jaw and lower/upper postcanines resemble those of the prozostrodontians Prozostrodon brasiliensis from the older HyperodapedonAZ and Brasilodon quadrangularis and Brasilitherium riograndensisfrom the same RiograndiaAZ. The inclusion of Botucaraitheriumwithin a broad phylogenetic analysis, positioned it as a more derived taxon than tritylodontids, being the sister-taxon of Brasilodon, Brasilitheriumplus Mammaliaformes. Although the new taxon is based on few cranial elements, it represents a additional faunal component of the Triassic RiograndiaAZ of southern Brazil, in which small-sized derived non-mammaliaform cynodonts, closely related to the origin of mammaliaforms, were ecologically well succeed and taxonomically diverse.

Se reporta la presencia del armadillo gigante, Priodontes maximus, en la Reserva Particular del Patrimonio Natural Vale Encantado (RPPN-VE, Uberaba, Minas Gerais, Brasil) con base en análisis de cuevas y en un registro visual. Fueron mapeadas 27 cuevas en la región nordeste de la RPPN-VE con un ancho medio de 43.54 cm y una altura media de 32.00 cm. Asimismo, se discute la importancia de las Reservas Naturales en la región del Triângulo Mineiro.

New records of Lestodelphys sp. (Marsupialia: Didelphimorphia: Didelphinae: Thylamyini) were found at the base of Eloisa Member, Río Luján Formation (late Pleistocene) from three sites located on the right bank of the Río Reconquista, Merlo County, northeast Buenos Aires Province (Argentina). The records of these specimens are among the northernmost for Lestodelphys from the Pleistocene of Buenos Aires Province. The material consists of four lower hemimandibles. They have a combination of features suggesting either: (1) a high morphological variability in the fossil species L. juga, in which case the current diagnosis of this taxon has to be reviewed; or (2) that the validity of L. juga must no longer be considered, as already stated by previous researchers. The occurrence of Lestodelphys is used as an environmental indicator because the current species is confined to areas of arid to semiarid conditions. The presence of the new specimens in the Pleistocene of Merlo reinforces previous paleo-environmental inferences for the levels of provenance.

Nuevos registros de Lestodelphys sp. (Marsupialia: Didelphimorphia: Didelphinae: Thylamyini) son registrados en la base del Miembro Eloisa, Formación Río Luján (Pleistoceno tardío), provenientes de tres sitios localizados sobre la margen derecha de la ribera del Río Reconquista, Partido de Merlo, noreste de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (Argentina). Estos materiales constituyen los registros más boreales de Lestodelphys para la Provincia de Buenos Aires. Los registros consisten en cuatro mandíbulas. Estos tienen una combinación de caracteres que sugieren que (1) la especie fósil L. juga posee una alta variabilidad morfológica, por lo tanto la diagnosis actual debe ser revisada; o, (2) la validez de L. juga debiera no ser considerada, como fue sugerido por autores previos. El registro de Lestodelphys es utilizado como indicador ambiental ya que la especie viviente se registra en ambientes áridos a semiáridos. La presencia de los nuevos materiales en el Pleistoceno de Merlo refuerza las inferencias ambientales previamente mencionadas para los depósitos portadores.

Os achados de escamados (Reptilia, Squamata) são escassos no Cretáceo do Brasil, incluindo cinco registros pontuais, dois do Aptiano-Albiano da Bacia do Araripe (Tijubina pontei Bonfim-Júnior e Marques e Olindalacerta brasiliensis Evans e Yabumoto), e três do Cretáceo Superior do Grupo Bauru (Pristiguana brasiliensis Estes and Price, Anilioidae gen. et sp. indet., Squamata gen. et sp. indet.). Nesta contribuição apresentamos um novo gênero e espécie de lagarto, Brasiliguana prudentis, baseado numa maxila esquerda com dentição. O material provém de depósitos da Formação Adamantina aflorantes próximos a cidade de Presidente Prudente, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. O novo táxon é considerado um iguanídeo não-Priscagamidae+Acrodonta baseado na presença de uma margem anterior do processo nasal do maxilar pouco inclinada e na morfologia maxilar e dentaria mais semelhante à de outros iguanideos que a outros grupos de lagartos (ex. teiídeos). A presente descoberta aumenta a diversidade de lagartos escamados na América do Sul onde o registro fóssil é ainda raro.

The record of non-mosasaur squamates (Reptilia, Squamata) is sparse in the Cretaceus fossil record of Brazil and include six putative reports, three from the Aptian-Albian of the Araripe Basin (Tijubina pontei Bonfim-Júnior and Marques, Olindalacerta brasiliensis Evans and Yabumoto, and a lizard indet.) and three from the Upper Cretaceous of the Bauru Group (Pristiguana brasiliensis Estes and Price, Anilioidae gen. et sp. indet., and Squamata gen. et sp. indet.). In this contribution, a new genus and species of lizard, Brasiliguana prudentis gen. et sp. nov., is described based on an isolated left maxilla with teeth. The material was discovered in an outcrop of the Upper Cretaceous Adamantina Formation (Bauru Group) located in the proximity of Presidente Prudente Municipality, São Paulo State, Brazil. The new taxon is considered a basal non-Priscagamidae+Acrodonta iguanian based on the presence of a weakly inclined anterior margin of the maxillary nasal process and maxillary tooth shape and tooth implantation similar to that of iguanians rather than of other lizard groups (e.g. teiids). This finding significantly increases the squamate lizard diversity of South America, which is still poorly understood and sparsely represented in the fossil record.

Comparing with other regions of Argentina, few Pleistocene mammalian records are known from Mendoza Province. The genera previously recognized are: Megatherium, Mylodon, Glossotherium, Macrauchenia, Paleolama, Hippidion, and Equus. In this note, the first occurrence of Glyptodon sp. (Xenarthra, Cingulata, Glyptodontidae) is reported. The material was found in outcrops of the El Zampal Formation located on the west margin of the Tunuyán River, Tupungato Department. This finding represents the westernmost record of Glyptodon in Argentina.

Poco se conoce aún sobre la fauna del Pleistoceno de la provincia de Mendoza en relación a otras regiones de la Argentina. Los géneros previamente reconocidos son: Megatherium, Mylodon, Glossotherium, Macrauchenia, Paleolama, Hippidion y Equus. En esta nota comunicamos los primeros restos de Glyptodon sp. (Xenarthra, Cingulata, Glyptodontidae), los que fueron hallados en la margen oeste del río Tunuyán, Departamento de Tupungato, en sedimentitas de la Formación El Zampal. Este espécimen de Glyptodon representa el registro más occidental para la Argentina.

Parahyaenodon argentinus, from the Late Miocene-Early Pliocene of Monte Hermoso (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina), was recognized by Ameghino in 1904, who regarded it as Hyaenodontidae (Eutheria, Creodonta). Based on its dental features, later authors assigned P. argentinus to Borhyaeninae (Metatheria, Sparassodonta, Borhyaenidae). Thus, this taxon would have represented the last known borhyaenid. A new analysis of the type and only known specimen led us to reassign P. argentinus to Procyonidae (Eutheria, Carnivora). In this context, the biochron of Borhyaeninae extends up just to Late Miocene (Huayquerian Age), being cf. Borhyaena and possibly Eutemnodus the last known representatives of this subfamily. Based on these results and in the first records of carnivorous placental immigrants in South America, it is evident that there was no "competitive displacement" between metatherian and eutherian carnivores: there is a gap of no less than four Ma between the extinction of the last Borhyaeninae and the arrival of their alleged ecological counterparts, the Carnivora.

Parahyaenodon argentinus, del Mioceno Tardío-Plioceno Temprano de Monte Hermoso (provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina) fue dado a conocer por Ameghino en 1904 como un Hyaenodontidae (Eutheria, Creodonta). Sobre la base de sus caracteres dentarios, autores posteriores consideraron a P. argentinus como un Borhyaeninae (Metatheria, Sparassodonta, Borhyaenidae), lo que representaría el registro más tardío conocido para la subfamilia. Un nuevo análisis del ejemplar tipo y único material conocido de esta especie permitió reasignar a P. argentinus a los Procyonidae (Eutheria, Carnivora). De este modo el biocrón de los Borhyaeninae se extiende sólo hasta fines del Mioceno (Edad Huayqueriense), siendo cf. Borhyaena y, posiblemente Eutemnodus los últimos representantes de la subfamilia. A la luz de estos resultados, y teniendo en cuenta los primeros registros de inmigrantes placentarios carnívoros en América del Sur, resulta evidente entonces que no ocurrieron "desplazamientos competitivos" entre unos y otros: existe un lapso de aproximadamente cuatro Ma entre la extinción de los Borhyaeninae y la aparición de sus supuestos equivalentes ecológicos, los Carnivora.

A new tritheledontid, Irajatherium hernandezi gen. et sp. nov., from the Late Triassic Caturrita Formation of Brazil is described. The specimen consists of a left maxilla bearing the canine, five postcanines, and the alveolus of another one, two fragments of lower jaw, a humerus, and a femur. The association of the following features is unique for this taxon: 1) anterior upper postcanines transversely narrow bearing a higher cusp A and smaller cusp C; 2) last upper postcanines with higher, bulbous cusp A and smaller lingual cusps B and C, differing from Pachygenelus in lacking a buccal cingulum; 3) middle lower postcanines bearing a higher anterior cusp and three consecutively smaller posterior cusps, differing from Pachygenelus in lacking a lingual cingulum; 4) lower postcanines with sharp wear facets; 5) humerus with two thick osseous processes for the teres major muscle; and 6) femur with the greater trochanter at the head level and the lesser trochanter on the medial surface of the shaft. Our phylogenetic analysis placed I. hernandezi together with Riograndia guaibensis Bonaparte et al. , Chaliminia musteloides Bonaparte, Pachygenelus monus Watson and Diarthrognathus broomi Crompton. These taxa represent the family Tritheledontidae. The presence of two kinds of upper postcanines in different replacement waves in Irajatherium could be a useful feature for inference of possible mechanism of dental differentiation among non-mammalian cynodonts. Possible fossorial adaptations are documented in the humerus of Irajatherium.

Se describe un nuevo tritheledóntido, Irajatherium hernandezi gen. et sp. nov., de la Formación Caturrita del Triásico Tardío de Brasil. El especimen consiste en un maxillar izquierdo con el canino, cinco postcaninos y el alvéolo para uno más, dos fragmentos de mandíbula, un húmero y un fémur. La asociación de los siguientes caracteres es única para este taxón: 1) postcaninos superiores anteriores transversalmente angostos, con la cúspide A prominente y la cúspide C de pequeño tamaño; 2) último postcanino con la cúspide A prominente y bulbosa, y las cúspides B y C pequeñas desplazadas lingualmente, diferente a Pachygenelus por la ausencia de un cíngulo bucal; 3) dientes inferiores medios con una cúspide anterior alta y tres cúspides consecutivamente menores, diferentes de Pachygenelus por la ausencia de un cíngulo lingual; 4) facetas de desgaste en los postcaninos inferiores; 5) húmero con dos robustas tuberosidades para el músculo teres major; y 6) fémur con el trocánter mayor ubicado al nivel de la cabeza y trocánter menor proyectado medialmente. Nuestro análisis filogenético ubica a I. hernandezi junto con Riograndia guaibensis Bonaparte et al. , Chaliminia musteloides Bonaparte, Pachygenelus monus Watson, and Diarthrognathus broomi Crompton. Estos taxones representan la familia Tritheledontidae. La presencia de dos tipos distintos de morfologías de postcaninos superiores involucrados en el recambio dentario de Irajatherium podría ser un rasgo importante para inferir sobre posibles mecanismos de diferenciación dentaria entre cinodontes. Se documentan posibles adaptaciones fosoriales en el húmero de Irajatherium.
