ABSTRACT The aim was to study pregnant cervus in captivity, to obtain body morphometric data, serum progesterone concentrations, and pH of the vagina. Females of cervus (Cervus unicolor), (n=8) between 2 and 3 years old were used in November during breeding season. After sedation, in one collection, the following was measured: body weight 54.50 ± 18.70kg, body length 1.21 ± 0.16m, height at withers 0.75 ± 0.08m, thoracic perimeter 0.84 ± 0.12m, and body mass index 97.32 ± 10.50kg / m2. After sedation, blood samples were collected to measure progesterone concentration by radioimmunoassay and the use of an indicator tape to obtain the pH of the vagina was performed eight times at four day intervals in the eight females, in a total of 64 samples for each exam. Data were analyzed, and significance was at 5%. There were no differences (P> 0.05) between measurements for serum progesterone concentrations and pH of the vagina. The correlations between body weight, progesterone, pH, and body mass index were not significant (P> 0.05). There was no significant oscillation of progesterone concentration and pH of the vagina in the pregnancy period studied.

RESUMO Em galos de matriz pesada sabe-se que o peso dos testículos pode ser associado positivamente com a produção diária de espermatozoides e que alterações nos testículos irão refletir na fertilidade. Nas aves, os testículos estão localizados dentro da cavidade celomática, e, portanto, não são acessíveis para exame andrológico direto, como em mamíferos. A avaliação reprodutiva de galos se baseia principalmente em características fenotípicas. Buscou-se avaliar o potencial de associação de alguns parâmetros fenotípicos, como peso corporal (PC), escores de crista (ECR), escores de cloaca (ECL) e escores de pés (EP), com parâmetros morfológicos de testículos em galos Cobb® Mx em duas idades (25 e 45 semanas de idade). Galos leves apresentaram menor peso testicular (PT), menor diâmetro de túbulo seminífero (DT), e menores ECR e ECL que galos médios e pesados (P≤0.05). Galos pesados apresentaram os maiores ECR e maiores valores para altura do epitélio seminífero (AE), e DT. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre as categorias de peso para escores de pé e proporções de túbulo seminífero (TS) e interstício (INT). Considerando-se o efeito da idade, galos com 45 semanas de idade apresentaram menores PT e TS que galos com 25 semanas de idade. Correlação positiva, moderada e significativa foi encontrada entre peso de testículo e características fenotípicas como ECR, ECL e PC em galos de 45 semanas de idade. Foi encontrada correlação positiva, moderada e significativa entre PC e características testiculares como DT e AE nas duas idades avaliadas. Conclui-se que em galos Cobb® Mx ocorre regressão do testículo com o avanço da idade, e ela é mais intensa em galos com menor peso corporal. Conclui-se que o PC tem influência positiva no peso e índices histomorfométricos dos testículos, e que escores de crista e de cloaca podem ser utilizados com potencial moderado de predição para identificar galos com baixo peso de testículos em galos com 45 semanas de idade.

ABSTRACT In broiler breeder roosters, the weight of the testes is positively associated with daily sperm production and fertility. In birds, the testes are located in the coelomic cavity, not being accessible to reproductive evaluation as mammalian testes. The reproductive evaluation of roosters is based on phenotypic traits. Any changes on testes will be reflected on fertility levels. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the potential of association of phenotypic traits as body weight (BW), comb scores (COS), cloaca scores (CLS) and feet scores (FS) with testicular morphometric parameters in adult Cobb® Mx roosters in two ages (25 and 45 weeks of age). The low BW roosters had lower testes weight (TW), smaller seminiferous tubule diameter (STD) and lower comb and cloaca scores than the medium and high BW roosters (P≤0.05). Heavy roosters had the highest COS and bigger seminiferous epithelium height (SEH). There was no statistical difference between the BW categories in FS and volumetric proportion of seminiferous tubule (ST) and interstitial tissue (IT). Considering the age effect, roosters with 45 weeks of age had lower TW and ST than 25-week roosters. Positive, moderate and significant correlation was found between testes weight and phenotypic characteristics as BW, COS and CLS in 45week roosters. A positive, moderate and significant correlation was found between body weight and histologic testicular characteristics as STD and SHE in both evaluated ages. In conclusion, there is a regression in the testes weight with age and it is more intense in Cobb® Mx roosters with lower BW. Furthermore, it is concluded that the BW positively influences the testes weight and histological quality of the testes. COS and CLS can be used with moderate potential prediction to identify roosters with low testes weight at 45 weeks of age.

Avaliaram-se a proporção volumétrica dos constituintes do corpo lúteo e a distribuição de células lúteas com grânulos citoplasmáticos no corpo lúteo de animais Nelore ao longo da gestação e em animais não gestantes. Foram coletados ovários com corpos lúteos de 24 animais abatidos em frigorífico. Os animais foram distribuídos em dois grupos: gestantes e não gestantes. A idade gestacional foi determinada pela medição do comprimento apicocaudal do feto. Os ovários foram distribuídos segundo o trimestre gestacional: primeiro- gestação de até 90 dias; segundo- de 91 a 180 dias; e terceiro- de 181 a 270 dias. Os corpos lúteos, processados para inclusão em paraplast, foram avaliados em microscópio de luz. Na proporção volumétrica do corpo lúteo, os constituintes avaliados foram citoplasma e núcleo de células lúteas, tecido conjuntivo e fibroblastos, células endoteliais e pericitos e vasos sanguíneos. A proporção volumétrica de citoplasma de células lúteas reduziu de 46,1±2,8% para 37,9±3,5% e a de núcleo de células lúteas reduziu de 9,2±1,0% para 6,2±1,0%, do primeiro para o segundo trimestre. A proporção de tecido conjuntivo e fibroblastos aumentou de 20,9±5,4%, no primeiro trimestre, para 34,0±4,2%, no segundo trimestre. Grânulos citoplasmáticos foram evidenciados pelas técnicas histoquímicas xylidine ponceau e azul de bromofenol, que indicam sua provável composição proteica. A quantidade de células maiores com grânulos aumentou significativamente de 2,3±1,9%, no primeiro trimestre, para 25,5±20,3%, no segundo. A proporção volumétrica de citoplasma e núcleo de células lúteas diminuiu ao longo da gestação, e a de tecido conjuntivo aumentou. A quantidade de células lúteas maiores contendo grânulos também aumentou ao longo da gestação.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate, in cycling and pregnant Nelore cows, the volumetric proportion of the corpus luteum and the distribution of lutein cells with cytoplasmic granules. Twenty four ovaries with corpus luteum were collected in a slaughterhouse. The ovaries were distributed into two groups: pregnant and non-pregnant cows. The group of pregnant cows was divided according to the stage of pregnancy, by the crown-rump fetus length: 1st third - until 90 days, 2nd third - between 91 and 180 days and 3rd third - between 181 and 270 days. The corpus luteum were processed for inclusion in paraplast, and slides were stained for analysis in light microscopy. The constituents quantified in the volumetric proportion were: lutein cells cytoplasm and nucleus, connective tissue and fibroblasts, endothelial cells and pericyte and blood vessels. The volumetric proportion of lutein cells cytoplasm decreased significantly from 46.1±2.8% to 37.9±3.5%, and also decreased significantly in the nucleus from 9.2±1.0% to 6.2±1.0% between the first and the second trimester of pregnancy. The amount of connective tissue and fibroblasts increased significantly throughout gestation, with 20.9±5.4% on the first trimester and 34.0±4.2% on the second. Granules were evidenced by the histochemical technique of Xylidine Ponceau and Bromophenol blue, indicating their probable protein composition. The amount of lutein cells with granules increased throughout gestation, but significant difference was observed only between the first (2.3±1.9%) and second trimester (25.5±20.3%). The cytoplasmic and nucleus volumetric proportion decreased during pregnancy and the volumetric proportion of connective tissue increased. The amount of lutein cells with granules increased throughout pregnancy.

Em galos de matriz pesada, o peso dos testículos se associa positivamente com a produção diária de espermatozoides e com a fertilidade. Contudo, os testículos de aves se localizam na cavidade abdominal, não sendo acessíveis para exame andrológico como os testículos de mamíferos. A avaliação reprodutiva de galos de matriz pesada é subjetiva e se baseia em características como peso corporal (PC), qualidade de pés e pernas e morfologia de cloaca e crista. Estudos que validem o potencial de associação dessas características fenotípicas com parâmetros da morfometria testicular são raros, principalmente quando se consideram galos de matriz pesada manejados em lotes comerciais. Escores de cloaca e de crista e parâmetros da morfometria testicular foram avaliados em galos Cobb 500 Slow adultos das categorias de PC leve (<4,300kg), médio (entre 4,300 e 5,250kg) e pesado (≥5,250kg). O coeficiente de variação para PC foi de 12%. Os galos da categoria de PC pesado apresentaram testículos mais pesados e maiores escores de cloaca e de crista do que os galos da categoria de PC leve. Não houve diferença estatística entre as categorias de PC, considerando-se índice gonadossomático, porcentagens de túbulo seminífero e de tecido intersticial, diâmetro de túbulo seminífero e altura de epitélio seminífero. Correlação positiva, moderada e significativa foi observada entre peso de testículo e características de PC, escores de cloaca e de crista, diâmetro de túbulo seminífero e altura de epitélio seminífero. Um dos seis galos da categoria de PC leve avaliados quanto à histologia de testículo apresentou atrofia testicular. Em galos Cobb 500 Slow, conclui-se que o PC influencia o peso e a qualidade histológica de testículos e que os escores de cloaca e de crista podem ser utilizados com potencial moderado de predição para identificar galos com baixo peso de testículos.

In broiler breeder roosters the weight of the testes is positively associated with daily sperm production and fertility. However, the avian testes are located in the abdominal cavity, not being accessible for reproductive evaluation as mammalian testes. The reproductive evaluation of broiler breeder roosters is subjective and is based on characteristics such as body weight (BW), quality of feet and legs and morphology of cloaca and comb. Studies that validate the potential of associating these phenotype characteristics with testicular morphometric parameters are rare, especially when broiler breeder roosters of commercial flocks are considered. Cloaca and comb scores and testicular morphometric parameters were evaluated in adult Cobb 500 Slow roosters with low (<4.300kg), medium (between 4.300 and 5.250kg) and high (≥5.250kg) BW categories. The coefficient of variation for BW was 12%. The high BW roosters have heavier testes and higher cloaca and comb scores than the low BW roosters. There was no statistical difference between the BW categories in gonadosomatic index, percentage of seminiferous tubule and interstitial tissue, diameter of the seminiferous tubule and height of the seminiferous epithelium. Testis weight is positive, moderate and significantly correlated with BW, cloaca and comb scores, diameter of seminiferous tubule and height of seminiferous epithelium. One of six low BW roosters evaluated for histology of the testis had testicular atrophy. We conclude that in Cobb 500 Slow roosters BW influences the weight and histological quality of the testes. Besides this, cloaca and comb scores can be used with moderate prediction potential to identify roosters with underweight testes.

Avaliaram-se ejaculados caninos individuais e pools de sêmen submetidos a dois tratamentos de renovação do meio diluidor. Sêmen de seis cães foi coletado, na forma de ejaculados individuais e pools de sêmen, diluído na proporção de 1:1 em meio Tris-Gema, centrifugado a 500g/10min, e o pellet ressuspendido até concentração final de 50x10(6) espermatozoides/mL. O sêmen foi resfriado a 0,26ºC/min, entre 37 e 16ºC, e 0,08ºC/min, entre 16 a 8ºC, e mantido em geladeira a 5ºC por 14 dias. No Tratamento 1, o meio diluidor foi renovado a cada seis dias, e no Tratamento 2 aos 12 dias. O sêmen foi avaliado, a cada 48 horas, quanto à motilidade espermática, utilizando-se o Sperm Class Analyser® (SCA), e quanto à integridade de membranas pelo teste hiposmótico e coloração com PI/CFDA. A formação de pools de sêmen simplificou sua manipulação, principalmente com relação ao aumento do volume da amostra disponível; no entanto, resultados obtidos a partir de ejaculados individuais mostraram diferenças entre tratamentos, não identificadas nos pools de sêmen.

Individual ejaculates and pooled dog semen submitted to two treatments of medium exchange were evaluated. Semen was collected from six dogs, as individual ejaculates and pooled semen, diluted in a 1:1 ratio in Tris-Yolk medium, centrifuged at 500g/10min and ressuspended to the final concentration of 50x10(6) sptz/mL. The samples were cooled at rates of 0.26 o C/min between 37 and 16 o C, and 0.08ºC/min from 16 to 8ºC, and then kept in a refrigerator for 14 days. In Treatement 1 medium was exchanged every six days and in Treatment 2 after twelve days. The cooled samples were evaluated every 48 hours for sperm motility using the Sperm Calss Analyser® (SCA), and membrane integrity with hiposmotic swelling test and PI/CFDA stain. Pooled semen was easier to handle, mainly considering the decreased work due to volume. When submitted to medium exchange, pooled semen behaved similarly to individual ejaculates; however, results obtained from individual ejaculates showed differences between treatments, which were not apparent in pooled semen results.

Vinte e quatro touros jovens da raça Nelore foram distribuídos em grupo 1 (G1, à puberdade) e grupo 2 (G2, pós-puberdade), segundo a concentração seminal e motilidade progressiva dos espermatozoides. Características de produção, seminais e endócrinas foram avaliadas à puberdade e pós-puberdade, aos 12, 14, 16 e 18 meses de idade. A média de idade, de peso e de perímetro escrotal à puberdade foram, respectivamente, de 15,37±1,58 meses, 391,35±55,64 kg e 26,41±2,35cm, e na pós-puberdade foram, respectivamente, de 17,49±1,73 meses; 451,75±35,44kg e 29,93±2,59cm. As características seminais na pós-puberdade aumentaram em relação à puberdade. Pode-se inferir que os tourinhos da raça Nelore submetidos a um programa de seleção para precocidade sexual manifestaram a puberdade em torno de 15 meses de idade e que touros jovens com maior perímetro escrotal apresentaram menor idade à puberdade.

Twenty-four young Nelore bulls were divided in group 1 (G1, at puberty) and group 2 (G2, after puberty), according to characteristics of seminal concentration and gradual motility of the spermatozoa. Zoothecnic, seminal and endocrine characteristics were evaluated at puberty and after puberty, at 12, 14, 16 and 18 months of age. The average of age, weight and scrotal perimeter at puberty were, respectively, 15,37±1,58 months, 391,35±55,64 and 26.41±2,35cm, and in the period after puberty they were, respectively, 17,49±1,73 months; 451,75±35,44kg and 29,93±2,59cm. The seminal characteristics after puberty increased in relation to that at puberty. It is concluded that the young Nelore bulls submitted to one program of election for sexual precocity reached puberty around 15 months of age, and young bulls with higher escrotal perimeter had puberty at an early age.

The objective of the experiment was to verify, through ultrasonography, the follicular activity of ostriches in different seasons of the year, correlating them with photoperiod, number of rainy days in each month and egg laying. Eight females were evaluated monthly, during 12 consecutive months in an ostrich farm located in the Center-West of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was found that the time of the year for egg laying lasts for eight months, from June to January. The egg laying was positively correlated (r = 0.48; P<0.01) with photoperiod. However, there was no correlation between the egg laying and the follicular activity with the amount of rain. Considering the technique adopted, the right antimere offered better ultrasonographic access. The method was efficient for ovary follicular evaluation in the ostrich, offering adequate subsidies for the evaluation of the reproductive activity of the female.

As dimensões e o peso testicular foram avaliados em 25 machos adultos de codornas japonesas (Coturnix coturnix japonica) e correlacionados entre si, a fim de se buscar obter informações que possibilitem a criação de um parâmetro preditivo da capacidade de produção espermática. As aves foram abatidas e os testículos removidos para mensuração e pesagem. As dimensões e o peso entre os testículos esquerdo e direito foram comparados. Os parâmetros testiculares foram correlacionados entre si por meio da determinação do coeficiente de correlação linear. O índice gonadossomático também foi determinado, indicando alocação de 3,68% do peso corporal em testículos nos machos avaliados, resultado maior do que os descritos na literatura. Apesar da diferença de formato entre os testículos esquerdo e direito, o peso foi semelhante, sugerindo que não há diferença na capacidade de produção espermática entre eles. Diferença estatística entre os valores biométricos indica que o testículo esquerdo é mais curto e mais arredondado, enquanto o direito é mais longo e estreito. O peso corporal apresentou baixa correlação com o peso testicular, 0,14 e 0,12 para os testículos esquerdo e direito, respectivamente. Os parâmetros que melhor se correlacionaram com o peso testicular foram a largura e a espessura. Considerando-se a identificação de um parâmetro único para comparação entre machos, a espessura do testículo esquerdo apresentou coeficiente de correlação linear de 0,89 com o somatório do peso dos dois testículos. Com base nessa informação, métodos não invasivos, como a ultrassonografia, poderiam ser utilizados para estimar o potencial reprodutivo e auxiliar na comparação de machos de codornas japonesas em núcleos de seleção de aves elite, contribuindo para melhoramento genético da espécie.

The size and testis weight were evaluated and correlated in 25 adult male Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica), seeking information to enable the development of a predictive parameter of sperm production capacity. The birds were slaughtered and testes removed for measuring and weighing. The size and testis weight were compared between the left and right. The testicular parameters were correlated by determining the linear correlation coefficient. The gonadosomatic index was also determined, indicating the allocation of 3.68% of body weight in the testes, greater than described in literature. Despite the difference in shape between the left and right testis, weight was similar, suggesting that there is no difference in the capacity of sperm production amongst them. A statistical difference between the biometric values indicates that the left testicle is shorter and more rounded, while the right is longer and narrower. Body weight showed a low correlation with the testicular weight, 0.14 and 0.12 for the left and right testes, respectively. The parameters that best correlated with testicular weight were the width and thickness. Given the identification of a single parameter for comparison of males, the thickness of the left testis showed linear correlation coefficient of 0.89 with the sum of the weight of both testicles. From this information, noninvasive methods such as ultrasound could be used to estimate the reproductive potential and ease the comparison of male Japanese quail in elite selection nuclei, contributing to the genetic improvement of the species.

Para determinar o tempo de permanência de espermatozoides nas glândulas hospedeiras de espermatozoides (GHEs) e nas glândulas infundibulares (GIs) de codorna de corte (Coturnix coturnix coturnix), foram utilizados 12 machos e 66 fêmeas, totalizando 78 codornas em fase reprodutiva. As fêmeas foram distribuídas em 11 grupos e acasaladas por 24 horas em gaiolas individuais. Os machos, utilizados de modo intercalado, foram separados do contato com as fêmeas e colocados em descanso. As aves do grupo-controle (G0 - seis fêmeas) foram abatidas no início do experimento, enquanto as 60 fêmeas acasaladas foram distribuídas em 10 grupos (G1 a G10, com seis fêmeas cada) e abatidas a cada período de 24 horas, de forma sequencial. Fragmentos foram obtidos da região uterovaginal e do infundíbulo e submetidos às análises histológica, histoquímica e histométrica com técnicas de rotina. Os resultados morfométricos mostraram que 46% das GHEs continham espermatozoides em seu lume no primeiro dia após o acasalamento, diminuindo gradativamente nos dias posteriores chegando a 3% no quinto dia. Nesse período, os espermatozoides ascendem em direção às GIs, onde permanecem viáveis e férteis por, pelo menos, 96 horas após deixarem as GHEs, possibilitando a postura de ovos férteis por 10 dias, em média, após o acasalamento.

Sperm-Storage Tubules (SSPs) and Infundibular Tubules (ITs) are the structures responsible for sperm storage in the oviduct of birds, snakes, alligators and turtles after mating. Aiming to determine length of stay of sperm-storage tubules (SSPs) and infundibular tubules (ITs) cutting quail, Coturnix coturnix coturnix, we used 12 males and 66 females, totaling 79 quails in the reproductive phase. The females were allocated into 11 groups and mated for 24 hours in individual cages. The males used were merged and separated from contact with females and placed at rest. The poultry of the control-group (G0 six females) was slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment, the 60 previously mated females were allocated into 10 groups (G1 to G10, with six females each) and were slaughtered sequentially. On the 10th day, the last group (G10) was shot. The fragments obtained from the utero-vaginal region and the infundibulum of each female underwent histological techniques, immunohistochemistry and morphometry routine. The morphometric results showed that GHEs had 46% of the sperm in his heat on day 1 after mating, decreasing gradually in the after days reaching 3% on day 5. At this time they increase toward the infundibular tubules, where they remain viable and fertile for at least another 96 hours (4 days) after leaving the SSPs, allowing these birds to lay fertile eggs for 10 days on average after mating.

Foram avaliadas características morfológicas do corpo lúteo de 48 vacas Nelore gestantes obtidos de abatedouros. Os ovários com o corpo lúteo foram coletados, identificados e divididos em três grupos, considerando o estágio da gestação determinado pelo tamanho do feto: Grupo I - onze animais com gestação até 90 dias; Grupo 2 - vinte animais com gestação de 90 a 180 dias, e Grupo 3 - 17 animais com gestação de 180 a 261 dias. Todos os corpos lúteos foram dissecados, submetidos a processamento histológico e avaliados utilizando microscopia de luz. As características morfológicas das células luteais esteroidogênicas não mudou durante a gestação. Porém, foi observado um aumento de tecido conjuntivo, fibroblastos e matriz extracelular durante o final da gestação. Células em degeneração foram observadas em todos os períodos da gestação, mas com maior intensidade no fim do terceiro trimestre. Grânulos foram observados após a coloração com Tricrômico de Gomory e Xylidine Ponceau, caracterizados como grânulos de proteína. Nenhuma explicação foi encontrada na literatura para coloração de grânulos pelo Tricrômico de Gomory.

A proporção volumétrica dos constituintes do corpo lúteo foi estudada em 48 ovários de vacas Nelore gestantes, coletados em frigorífico e distribuídos em três grupos, considerando-se o terço da gestação. No primeiro terço, utilizaram-se 11 animais em gestação de até 90 dias; no segundo terço, 20 animais em gestação entre 91 e 180 dias, e no terceiro terço 17 animais em gestação entre 181 e 261 dias. O corpo lúteo foi dissecado e submetido a processamento histológico para avaliação em microscopia óptica. Os animais em gestação de até 90 dias apresentaram maior proporção volumétrica de células endoteliais e pericitos, e nos acima de 181 dias de gestação ocorreu menor proporção de citoplasma (42,7%) e núcleo (5,1%) de células lúteas esteroidogênicas, bem como aumento do tecido conjuntivo e fibroblastos (47,7%).

The volumetric proportion of the corpus luteum was evaluated in 48 ovaries from pregnant Nelore cows slaughtered in abattoirs, and divided into three groups, considering the trimester of gestation, and classified by the size of the fetus: First trimester - eleven animals with gestation up to 90 days; Second trimester - twenty animals with gestation between 91 and 180 days, and Third trimester - 17 animals with gestation between 181 and 261 days. The corpus luteum was dissected and submitted to histological processing and evaluations under light microscopy. The animals with gestation up to 90 days presented a higher proportion of endotelial cells and pericites. In the Third trimester there occurred a smaller proportion of cytoplasm (42,7%) and nucleus (5,1%) of steroidogenic luteal cells, and an increase in the conjunctive tissue, fibroblasts (47,7%).

The effects of gestation and lactation on the dynamics of the thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) were evaluated in Crioula Lanada Serrana ewes from the plateau region in Santa Catarina - Brazil. To evaluate the effects of gestation, twenty four ewes were randomly divided into groups I and II. Group I was composed of 12 pregnant ewes and the control group (II) was composed of 12 non-pregnant ewes. The effects of lactation were evaluated in the same ewes of group I after parturition (LE) and in the control group (NL). Blood samples were taken in the first, second and third periods of gestation, at parturition, and at 30, 60 and 90 days of lactation. T3 and T4 concentrations were determined by radio-immunoassay (RIA). Pregnant ewes showed lower serum concentrations of T3 and T4 than those of non-pregnant ewes. At parturition, there was no significant difference in T3 concentrations between groups I and II (p>0.05). During lactation, serum T3 concentrations were lower (p<0.05) in LE than in NL ewes. Serum T3 concentrations were greater (p<0.05) at lambing than during the lactation periods. Serum T4 concentrations in LE at parturition did not differ (p>0.05) from those of NL ewes. During lactation, T4 concentrations of LE were lower (p<0.05) than those of the NL ewes. The results of this study have shown that gestation causes a variation in the T3 and T4 serum concentrations, and that lactation results in a decrease of serum concentrations of T3 and T4 in Crioula Lanada Serrana ewes.

Os efeitos da gestação e lactação sobre a dinâmica dos hormônios tireoidianos triiodotironina (T3) e tiroxina (T4) foram avaliados em ovelhas Crioula Lanada Serrana na região do Planalto Serrano Catarinense. Para avaliar os efeitos da gestação, foram utilizadas vinte e quatro ovelhas distribuídas aleatoriamente em dois grupos. O grupo I foi formado por 12 ovelhas gestantes e o grupo controle por 12 ovelhas não gestantes (grupo II). Os efeitos da lactação foram avaliados nas mesmas ovelhas do grupo I após a parição (LE) e no grupo controle (NL). Foram colhidas amostras sanguíneas no primeiro, segundo e terceiro terço da gestação, ao parto e aos 30, 60 e 90 dias de lactação. As concentrações de T3 e T4 foram determinadas por radioimunoensaio (RIA). As ovelhas gestantes apresentaram concen-trações séricas de T3 e T4 inferiores àquelas não gestantes. Ao parto não houve diferença significativa nas concentrações de T3 entre os grupos I e II (p>0,05). Durante a lactação as concentrações de T3 foram menores (p<0,05) para LE que para NL. No momento do parto, as concentrações de T3 foram maiores (p<0.05) do que aquelas observadas no período de lactação e as concentrações de T4 em LE, não diferiram de NL. Durante a lactação as concentrações de T4 de LE foram menores (p<0,05) do que em NL. Os resultados deste estudo demonstraram que a gestação causa variação nas concentrações séricas de T3 e T4 que, no momento do parto são similares àquelas observadas em ovelhas não gestantes. A lactação causa diminuição nas concentrações de T3 e T4 em ovelhas Crioula Lanada Serrana.

Avaliaram-se as características histomorfométricas do placentomo da vaca Nelore nos terços inicial, médio e final da gestação utilizando-se 52 úteros gestantes. Para a estimativa do estádio gestacional, foram utilizados aspectos do desenvolvimento fetal. Foram coletados fragmentos de um placentomo localizado no corno uterino ipsilateral ao corpo lúteo, os quais foram imersos em solução de formol e, posteriormente, processados histologicamente, incluídos em parafina e corados com hematoxilina-eosina. O estudo das proporções volumétricas foi feito utilizando-se microscópio de luz equipado com ocular integradora. Foi feita, também, a quantificação das células epiteliais nas criptas das carúnculas por meio de microscopia de luz e uma ocular micrométrica com 100 divisões. Foi verificado decréscimo no número das células maternas do epitélio das criptas no final da gestação. Os números médios das células binucleadas do trofoblasto, nos terços inicial, médio e final da gestação, mantiveram-se semelhantes, bem como a proporção volumétrica dos componentes dos tecidos conjuntivos materno e fetal e dos vasos no tecido materno. Histomorphometric characteristics of the placentome of the Nelore cow in the initial, medium, and final trimesters of pregnancy were evaluated using 52 pregnant uteri. For the estimation of the gestational age, aspects of fetal development were used. Fragments of a placentome of the uterine horn ipsilateral to the corpus luteum, which were immersed in formalin solution were collected, and processed for routine histological technique, included in paraffin, and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The study of the volumetric proportion was done using a light microscope equipped with an integrated ocular. It was also made the quantification of the epithelial cells in the crypts of caruncles by light microscopy and with the help of a micrometric ocular with a grid of 100 divisions. It was found a decrease in the number of maternal cells of the epithelium in the crypts in advanced pregnancy. The average number of binucleate trophoblast cells remained similar throughout gestation, as well as the volumetric proportion of components of the maternal and fetal connective tissue and maternal blood vessels. For the fetal tissues, there was a progressive increase in the connective tissue in the three trimester of pregnancy

Avaliou-se o efeito da adição de propilenoglicol ou de monensina na dieta de vacas leiteiras no período de transição sobre o retorno à atividade ovariana cíclica. Foram utilizadas 42 vacas pluríparas, da raça Holandesa, com produção de leite semelhante na lactação anterior (média de 8.000kg). Os animais, distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, foram divididos em grupos que receberam dieta-controle e dietas acrescidas com 300ml de propilenoglicol ou 30ppm da matéria seca da dieta/dia de monensina. Avaliaram-se os ovários, por ultra-sonografia, entre os dias quatro e 46 pós-parto, e a concentração plasmática de progesterona, nos dias 10, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 e 45 pós-parto. A adição de propilenoglicol mostrou-se eficiente em acelerar o retorno à ciclicidade após o parto. Os animais dos grupos que receberam propilenoglicol só no pré-parto, ou no pós-parto e no período de transição apresentaram intervalos parto-primeira ovulação de 29,0, 44,0 e 27,2 dias, respectivamente. Os intervalos parto-concepção para esses mesmos grupos foram de 98,3, 90,8, e 100,0 dias. A adição de monensina não se mostrou eficiente em acelerar o retorno à atividade ovariana cíclica após o parto. As vacas dos grupos que receberam monensina só no pré-parto, ou pós-parto, ou no período de transição apresentaram intervalos parto-primeira ovulação de 43,6, 39,3 e 42,8 dias, respectivamente. Os intervalos parto-concepção para os grupos pré e pós parto foram de 173,2, e 126,1 dias, respectivamente.

The influence of the addition of propylene glycol or monensin to diets of dairy cows during the transition period on return to ovarian cyclicity was evaluated. Forty two multiparous Holstein cows with an average milk production of 8,000kg were distributed in a split-plot design and were divided into groups receiving either control diets or diets increased with 30ppm of monensin or 300ml of propylene glycol during the transition period. Ovaries were evaluated by ultrasonography between days 4 and 46 post-partum. On days 10, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 post-partum, blood samples were taken to assay progesterone. The addition of propylene glycol showed to be more efficient in accelerate the return to cyclic ovarian activity. Cows that received propylene glycol just during pre-partum, post-partum or during the hole transition period showed intervals from parturition to first ovulation of 29.0, 44.0 and 27.2 days, respectively. The intervals from parturition to conception for the same groups were 98.3, 90.8, and 100.0 days, respectively. The addition of monensin to diets did not show positive effects on post-partum return to ovarian cyclicity. Cows that received monensin just during pre-partum, post-partum or during the hole transition period showed intervals from parturition to first ovulation of 43.6, 39.3, and 42.8 days, respectively. The interval from parturition to conception for cows that received monensin pre and post-partum were 173.2 and 126.1 days, respectively.
