Abstract The central objective of this article is to recognize and limit some generalities regarding port operations along the brazilian coast during the 19th century. Keeping the local, regional and natural/historical specificities of each port, we weave some points of contact between the big national ports beyond the commercial and cultural exchange networks. In this work, we seek to trace common characteristics of brazilian ports in the tension between permanence and change, reproduction and improvement.

Resumo O objetivo central deste artigo é reconhecer e limitar algumas generalidades quanto às operações portuárias ao longo da costa brasileira durante o século XIX. Guardando as especificidades locais, regionais e de constituição natural/histórica de cada porto, tecemos alguns pontos de contacto entre os grandes portos nacionais para além das redes de trocas comerciais e culturais. Neste estudo, procuramos traçar as características comuns dos portos brasileiros na tensão entre permanências e mudanças, reprodução e melhoramentos.

Resumo No momento em que as ferrovias eram expandidas, a navegação a vapor generalizada e o funcionamento dos portos eram questionados em todo o país, dotar o Rio de Janeiro de uma infraestrutura capaz de integrar esses modais se tornou aspiração das classes dominantes. Apenas nesse contexto específico, a ideia de uma Estação Marítima na Corte do Império pôde se concretizar. Não havia precedentes para os esforços e recursos empenhados, tanto do governo imperial quanto da maior empresa brasileira - a Estrada de Ferro Dom Pedro II. Objetivo neste artigo demonstrar a elaboração da Estação Marítima da Gamboa enquanto solução unificada para contemplar mudanças complexas e dirimir problemas de origens distintas, suscitando uma ação avassaladora para a preparação e a execução de sua construção (1876-1883). Abstract At a time when railroads were expanding, widespread steam navigation and the functioning of ports were questioned throughout the country, providing Rio de Janeiro with an infrastructure capable of integrating these modes became an aspiration of the ruling classes. Only in this specific context could the idea of a Maritime Station in the Court of the Empire come to fruition. There was no precedent for the efforts and resources committed, both by the imperial government and by the largest Brazilian company - the Estrada de Ferro Dom Pedro II. Resumo O presente artigo tem como objetivo principal contribuir à elucidação de um dos momentos mais críticos da recente estrutura financeira brasileira, a chamada Crise do Souto, em 1864 na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Para tanto, utilizamos farta documentação quantificada, serializada e georreferenciada, matizando os nuances das questões suscitadas pela crise com fontes discursivas que ampliam o nosso potencial analítico. Partimos da premissa que é necessário conhecer melhor o funcionamento e os negócios das casas bancárias para entender os motivos e os efeitos imediatos da crise naquela sociedade. Não é possível subestimar a magnitude, alcance e caráter estruturante das Casas Bancárias para o nascente sistema bancário e financeiro na praça do Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract This article aims to help elucidate one of the most critical moments of the recent Brazilian financial structure, the so-called Crisis de Souto, in 1864 in the city of Rio de Janeiro. For this, we use abundant quantified, serialized and georeferenced documentation, pointing out the nuances of the problems posed by the crisis with discursive sources that expand our analytical potential. We assume that it’s necessary to better understand the operation and business of bank houses and thus understand the reasons and the immediate effects of the crisis in that society. It’s not possible to underestimate the magnitude, scope and structuring nature of the Bank Houses for the nascent banking and financial system in the Plaza de Rio de Janeiro.
