The supplementation allows the supply of limiting nutrients and increase in efficiency of pasture utilization. The intake of supplement can be controlled by use of urea and mineral salt, avoiding dominancy of some animals over the others. The objective of this study was to evaluate the intake and apparent digestibility of nutrients in finishing phase Nellore steers fed different levels of supplements based on corn meal, during the dry season. The experiment was implanted on pasture of Panicum maximum 'Tanzânia', in four paddocks of 1.0 hectare. Four 30 months old and initial weight of 440 kg Nellore steers were used. The animals were distributed in 4x4 Latin square (four levels of supplementation and four periods). Levels of supplements use were: 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 kg/ animal/day, in addition to a control group receiving mineral mixture. The supplements, except the control, presented decreasing levels of crude protein (52.0 to 42.6% of dry matter) and proportions of mineral mixture:urea:corn meal of 10:10:80, 5:5:90 and 2.5:2.5:95, respectively. Urea was used as supplement intake controller. The experimental periods lasted 16 days each one, in a total of 64 days. The intake and the digestibility were measured with the use of the external indicator chromium oxide and internal indicator iADF. There was increasing linear effect for dry matter intake in kg/animal/day and percentage of BW, and intakes of crude protein, ethereal extract, neutral detergent fiber, non fibrous carbohydrates and total digestible nutrients, and there was no effect on the forage intake. There was increasing linear effect for the digestibility coefficient of dry matter and neutral detergent fiber. There was no effect for the digestibility coefficient of crude protein, ethereal extract and non fibrous carbohydrates.

A suplementação alimentar proporciona suprimento de nutrientes limitantes e aumento da eficiência de utilização das pastagens. O consumo de suprimentos pode ser controlado pelo uso de uréia e sais minerais, impedindo a dominância de uns animais sobre os outros. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o consumo e a digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes em novilhos Nelore em terminação, alimentados com diferentes níveis de suplemento à base de fubá de milho, durante o período da seca. O experimento foi implantado em pastagem de Panicum maximum 'Tanzânia', em quatro piquetes de 1,0 hectare. Foram utilizados quatro novilhos Nelore com 30 meses e peso médio inicial de 440 kg. Os animais foram distribuídos em quadrado latino 4x4 (quatro níveis de suplementação e quatro períodos). Foram utilizados níveis crescentes de suplemento: 1,0; 2,0; e 4,0 kg/animal/dia, além do tratamento controlemistura mineral. Os suplementos, à exceção do controle, apresentaram níveis decrescentes de proteína bruta (42,6 a 25% da matéria seca) e proporções de mistura mineral:uréia:fubá de milho de 10:10:80, 5:5:90 e 2,5:2,5:95 para os tratamentos com 1,0; 2,0 e 4,0 kg/animal/dia, respectivamente. A uréia foi usada como controladora de consumo de suplemento. Os períodos experimentais constituíram-se de 16 dias cada um, num total de 64 dias. O consumo e a digestibilidade foram determinados por meio do indicador externo óxido crômico e indicador interno FDAi. Houve efeito linear crescente para o consumo de matéria seca em kg/animal/dia e em porcentagem do PV, consumo de proteína bruta, consumo de extrato etéreo, consumo de fibra em detergente neutro, consumo de carboidratos não fibrosos e consumo de nutrientes digestíveis totais. Não houve efeito sobre o consumo de pastagem. Houve efeito linear crescente para os coeficientes de digestibilidade aparente da matéria seca e fibra em detergente neutro. Não houve efeito para os coeficientes de digestibilidade da proteína bruta, extrato etéreo e carboidratos não fibrosos.

Foram utilizados quatro novilhos com 30 meses e peso médio inicial de 440kg, distribuídos em quadrado latino 4x4 (quatro níveis de suplementação e quatro períodos de 16 dias). Foram usados quatro piquetes de um hectare de capim Panicum maximum cv. Tanzânia, e os animais receberam: 0 (grupo-controle); 1,0; 2,0; ou 4,0kg de suplemento/dia. Os suplementos, à exceção do controle, apresentaram níveis decrescentes de proteína bruta (58 a 32% da matéria seca) e proporções de mistura mineral:ureia:farelos de 10:10:80, 5:5:90 e 2,5:2,5:95 para os respectivos tratamentos. O consumo e a digestibilidade foram determinados com o uso do óxido crômico e FDAi, o delineamento estatístico foi em quadrado latino, e os tratamentos foram avaliados pela análise de regressão. Houve efeito linear crescente sobre o consumo e sobre os coeficientes de digestibilidade da matéria seca, proteína bruta, extrato etéreo e fibra em detergente neutro, e sobre o consumo de nutrientes digestíveis totais. Não houve efeito sobre o consumo de pasto e o consumo e a digestibilidade dos carboidratos não fibrosos. Os suplementos avaliados em geral melhoraram o consumo e a digestibilidade e, consequentemente, o valor nutritivo da dieta de novilhos em terminação sob pastejo, no período da seca.

The effects of supplements with high protein content on intake and digestibility were evaluated in Nellore steers finished at pasture during the dry season. Four steers avering 30-month old and initial weight of 440kg were distributed in a 4x4 Latin square (four levels of supplementation and four periods of 16 days). Four paddocks of one hectare containing Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania grass were utilized and the animals received 1.0, 2.0, or 4.0kg of supplement/day, in addition to a control - mineral mixture. The supplements, except control, presented decreasing levels of crude protein (58 to 32% in dry matter) and the proportions of mineral mixture:urea:cereal meals were 10:10:80, 5:5:90, and 2.5:2.5:95 for the treatments. The intake and digestibility were determined with the use of chromium oxide and ADFi. The statistical design was Latin square and the treatments were evaluated by regression analysis. There was an increasing linear effect on the intakes and digestibility coefficients of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, neutral detergent fiber, and intake of total digestible nutrients. There was no effect on the intake of pasture and intake and digestibility of non-fiber carbohydrates. It can be concluded that the evaluated supplements generally improve the intake and digestibility and consequently the nutritive value of the diets of finishing animals on the pasture during the dry season.

Avaliaram-se o ganho de peso e as características de carcaça de novilhos Nelore suplementados com elevado teor de proteína na terminação em pasto, durante a seca, e estimou-se a disponibilidade dos componentes da pastagem. O experimento foi implantado em pastagem de Brachiaria brizantha, cv. Marandu, em seis piquetes de nove hectares. Foram utilizados 48 novilhos Nelore com 30 meses de idade e 415±16 kg. Cada lote, alojado em um piquete, foi pesado no início e a cada 21 dias, durante 84 dias. A suplementação constou de: 0 (grupo-controle); 0,25; 0,5; 1,0; 2,0; ou 4,0 kg/animal/dia. Os suplementos, à exceção do controle, apresentaram porcentagens decrescentes de proteína bruta (111 a 32% da matéria seca) e proporções de mistura mineral:ureia:farelos de 25:25:50; 15:15:70; 10:10:80; 5:5:90 e 2,5:2,5:95, para os respectivos tratamentos. O delineamento foi o inteiramente ao acaso e os tratamentos foram avaliados pela análise de regressão. A proporção de colmo e folha seca aumentou no decorrer dos períodos experimentais, caracterizando o déficit hídrico da estação seca. Houve efeito linear crescente sobre o peso vivo final, ganho médio diário, peso de carcaça, espessura de gordura subcutânea e rendimento de carcaça em função do consumo de suplemento. A conversão do suplemento em kg/kg de ganho de peso, de 10:1, é típica de suplementação energética, mostrando que os animais não responderam satisfatoriamente à suplementação proteica.

Daily gain and carcass traits of Nellore steers fed different levels of supplementation with high content of protein at finishing during the dry season and the availability of the components of the pasture were evaluated. The experiment was carried out on pasture of Brachiaria brizantha, cv. Marandu, in six paddocks of nine hectares. Forty-eight Nellore steers averaging 30-month old and 415+16kg were used. Each group was allocated in a paddock, being weighted in the beginning and every 21 days, during 84 days. The levels of supplements were: 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0kg/animal/day, in addition to a control (mineral mixture). The supplements, except the control, presented decreasing levels of crude protein (111 to 32% of the dry matter) and proportions of mineral mixture:urea:concentrate feeds of 25:25:50, 15:15:70, 10:10:80, 5:5:90, and 2.5:2.5:95, respectively. The statistical design was completely randomized and the treatments were evaluated by regression analysis. The proportion of stem and dead leaf increased in elapsing of the experimental periods characterizing water deficit in the dry season. There was increasing linear effect on the final live weight, average daily gain, carcass weight, fat thickness, and carcass yield as a function of supplement intake. The supplement conversion in kg/kg of weight gain, at 10:1, is typical of energetic supplementation, showing that the animals did not satisfactorily respond to protein supplementation, which would give better values of conversion.

Utilizaram-se 40 bezerros Holandês × Zebu distribuídos em oito tratamentos (T): leite integral (1); leite integral com óleo de soja (2); leite integral e zeranol (3); leite integral com óleo de soja e zeranol (4); colostro fermentado (5); colostro fermentado com óleo de soja (6); colostro fermentado e zeranol (7); e colostro fermentado com óleo de soja e zeranol (8) com o objetivo de avaliar o consumo de alimentos, o crescimento e a conversão alimentar de animais entre o 15º e o 60º dia de vida. Diariamente, foram fornecidos 1,5kg de concentrado contendo 23% de proteína bruta, feno de tifton (Cynodon dactylon) à vontade e três litros de leite ou colostro fermentado. O colostro fermentado proporcionou melhores resultados de peso corporal e ganho de peso quando comparado ao leite integral, mas semelhantes aos resultados com zeranol. Também promoveu maior ingestão de matéria seca em relação ao leite integral, o que resultou em desempenhos semelhantes para esses dois tipos de alimento. Não houve diferenças entre os tratamentos quanto aos componentes não-integrantes da carcaça. O tratamento com leite e zeranol resultou em maior peso de carne industrial e o com óleo de soja aumentou a proporção de gordura interna. O colostro fermentado é uma boa opção para a recria de machos leiteiros e o efeito do zeranol sobre o ganho de peso é dependente da dieta dos animais.

Forty Holstein × Zebu calves from the 15th to the 60th day of age, were divided in eight treatments (T): whole milk (1); whole milk with soybean oil (2); whole milk with zeranol (3); whole milk with soybean oil and zeranol (4); fermented colostrum (5); fermented colostrum with soybean oil (6); fermented colostrums with zeranol (7); and fermented colostrum with soybean oil and zeranol (8) to measure feed intake, growth and feed conversion. Animals were fed daily on 1.5kg of concentrate containing 23% crude protein, ad libitum tifton hay (Cynodon dactylon) and three liters of milk or fermented colostrum. Calves fed on fermented colostrum showed higher body weight and weight gain than those receiving milk and similar performance to those treated with zeranol. Animals fed on fermented colostrum had higher dry matter intake in comparison with animals fed on milk. Both groups of animals showed similar growth. No differences for non-integrant carcass compounds where found, however, calves fed on milk and receiving zeranol showed higher industrial meat yield. Diet based on soybean oil increased the proportion of internal fat. Fermented colostrum showed to be an alternative feed for growing male dairy calves and the effect of zeranol on weight gain depends on the diet.

Utilizaram-se 40 bezerros Holandês × Zebu com objetivo de avaliar a viabilidade econômica da utilização do colostro fermentado, do óleo de soja e do zeranol em bezerros entre o 15º e o 60º dia de vida. Diariamente, foram fornecidos 1,5kg de concentrado contendo 23% de proteína bruta, feno de tifton (Cynodon dactylon) à vontade e três litros de leite ou colostro fermentado. Considerando as despesas de criação e as receitas geradas, verificou-se menor custo dos animais tratados com colostro fermentado. Esse resultado, associado ao bom desempenho obtido, demonstrou que o colostro fermentado é eficiente como substituto do leite para bezerros em fase de aleitamento, gerando maior lucratividade.

Profitability of fermented colostrum, soybean oil and zeranol were evaluated in 40 Holstein × Zebu calves from 15 to 60 days of age. They were fed a concentrate with 23% crude protein, restricted at amount of 1.5kg/day, ad libitum Tifton hay (Cynodon dactylon) and three liters of milk or fermented colostrum. Considering the nursing expenses and the incomes, the results showed lower costs for animals fed with fermented colostrum. This result associated with animals performance showed that fermented colostrum is efficient for suckling calves, allowing higher profitability.

Avaliaram-se os índices zootécnicos, os custos de produção e a rentabilidade de quatro empresas de produção de leite tipo B, no Estado de São Paulo, no período de maio de 1995 a abril de 1996. Foram feitas análise descritiva e comparação entre as empresas. Alta produtividade significou maior benefício econômico. A produção de leite em escala tem influência decisiva no custo total do litro de leite. Análises de viabilidade produtiva de sistemas de produção necessariamente devem compor análises de custos e receitas.

The objective of this study was to describe technical and economical aspects (productivity, cost and profitability indexes) of four dairy farms in São Paulo, Brazil, from May 1995 to April 1996. High productivity farms corresponded to high profitability ones. The intensive milk production showed a high influence on the cost of milk production. It is suggested that economic performance analysis should integrate productivity system viability analyses on the evaluation of dairy farms.

Vinte e quatro novilhas foram utilizadas para avaliar o efeito de diferentes fontes dietéticas lipídicas associadas ou não ao hCG sobre o níveis de progesterona e de metabólitos lipidícos e sobre a função luteal cíclica de novilhas. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso, em um esquema fatorial de 2 × 3, (com e sem injeção de hCG e três dietas isoprotéicas). A concentração sérica de progesterona do sexto ao 12º dia pós-estro foi maior nas novilhas alimentadas com dietas hiperlipídicas em relação à da dieta-controle. As dietas hiperlipídicas interferiram no perfil metabólico lipídico, especialmente do sexto ao nono dia após o início do estro. Observou-se interação entre aplicação de hCG e dietas hiperlipídicas. Os metabólitos lipídicos que melhor indicaram alterações metabólicas foram o colesterol total e as lipoproteínas de alta densidade (HDL). Houve correlação positiva entre colesterol total, HDL e concentração de progesterona na fase luteal do ciclo estral. Colesterol total e HDL interferem na função luteal de novilhas, provavelmente como precursores na síntese esteroidogênica do ovário.

Twenty-four heifers were allotted in a randomized block design in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement (with or without the injection of hCG, three isoproteic diets) to evaluate the effect of different dietary lipid sources associated or not to hCG on the progesterone and lipid metabolite levels, and the cyclic luteal function of heifers in six different treatments. The progesterone concentration from the sixth to the 12th day postestrus were higher in heifers fed on hyperlipidemic diets than those fed on control diet. The hyperlipidemic diets were important in the lipidic metabolism profile, mainly from sixth to the ninth day after the onset of estrus because the interaction between the hCG and hyperlipidemic diets. The best lipidic metabolites to detect the lipometabolic alterations were the total cholesterol and high density lipoprotein (HDL). There was a positive correlation between the total cholesterol, HDL and progesterone concentration in postestrus animals. Total cholesterol and HDL probably can modify the luteal cyclic function of heifers and be the precursors in the esteroidogenic sinthesis in the ovary.
