ABSTRACT In semi-arid regions, where seasonal drought or irregular rainfall distribution are common occurrences, agricultural management techniques or strategies, such as the use of bone meal and/or hydrogel, can mitigate adverse conditions and ensure crop production. This study aimed to evaluate the efects of bone meal doses (0, 250, 500, 750 and 1,000 g pit−1), in association or not with hydrogel (0 and 5 g pit−1, respectively), on the leaf nutrient content of the dwarf cashew cultivar BRS 226. The leaf nutrient contents were evaluated during two growing seasons. For being a good source of macronutrients, the bone meal increased the levels of N, P, Ca, K and Mg in the dwarf cashew leaves. The leaf contents of the micronutrients Zn, Fe and Mn decreased with increasing bone meal doses. The nutrient accumulation in the leaves of the dwarf cashew planted in pits with bone meal and hydrogel has the following order: N > K > Ca > Mg > P > Mn > Fe > Zn > Cu. The application of bone meal at levels close to 600 g pit−1, mainly with the use of hydrogel, is a viable fertilizer alternative for dwarf cashew.

RESUMO Em regiões semiáridas, onde a seca sazonal ou a distribuição irregular de chuvas são ocorrências comuns, técnicas ou estratégias de manejo agrícola, como o uso de farinha de osso e/ou hidrogel, podem mitigar condições adversas e garantir a produção agrícola. Objetivou- se avaliar os efeitos de doses de farinha de osso (0, 250, 500, 750 e 1,000 g cova−1), em associação ou não com hidrogel (0 e 5 g cova−1, respectivamente), sobre o teor de nutrientes foliares da cultivar de cajueiro-anão BRS 226. Os teores de nutrientes nas folhas foram avaliados durante duas safras. Por ser boa fonte de macronutrientes, a farinha de osso aumentou os níveis de N, P, Ca, K e Mg nas folhas do cajueiro anão. Os teores foliares dos micronutrientes Zn, Fe e Mn diminuíram com o aumento das doses de farinha de osso. O acúmulo de nutrientes nas folhas do cajueiro anão plantado em covas com farinha de osso e hidrogel tem a seguinte ordem: N > K > Ca > Mg > P > Mn > Fe > Zn > Cu. A aplicação de farinha de osso em níveis próximos a 600 g cova−1, principalmente com o uso de hidrogel, é uma alternativa viável de fertilizante para cajueiro-anão.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de brassinosteroide sobre os parâmetros de fluorescência da clorofila a, o índice SPAD e a suculência foliar em plantas jovens de tomate (Lycopersicon esculentum) sob estresse salino. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o em blocos ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 5×2 - cinco níveis de salinidade da água (0,5, 1,5, 3,0, 4,5 e 6,0 dS m-1) × duas doses de 24-epibrassinolídeo (0 e 10-6 mol L-1 de EBL). Aos 23 dias, o tratamento sem EBL mostrou que o aumento da salinidade da água reduziu a eficiência fotoquímica máxima, primária e efetiva do PSII, assim como a taxa de transporte de elétrons, o índice SPAD, a suculência foliar, a massa de matéria seca total e o índice de tolerância ao estresse, mas aumentou a fluorescência inicial e o excesso relativo de energia no PSII. Com o aumento da salinidade, nos tratamentos com EBL, houve aumento da eficiência efetiva do PSII, da taxa de transporte de elétrons, do índice SPAD, da suculência foliar, da matéria seca total e do índice de tolerância ao estresse. O epibrassinolídeo promove efeitos benéficos sobre a integridade do PSII, o índice de clorofila e a suculência foliar em plantas jovens de tomate submetidas a níveis de até salinidade 6,0 dS m-1.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of brassinosteroid on chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters, the SPAD index, and leaf succulence in young tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) plants under salt stress. The experimental design was a randomized complete block, in a 5×2 factorial arrangement - five levels of water salinity (0.5, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 dS m-1) × two rates of 24-epibrassinolide (0 and 10-6 mol L-1 EBL). At 23 days, the treatment without EBL showed that the increase of water salinity reduced the maximum, primary, and effective photochemical efficiency of PSII, as well as the electron transport rate, the SPAD index, leaf succulence, total dry mass, and the stress tolerance index, but increased initial fluorescence and relative excess energy in PSII. With the increase of water salinity, in the EBL treatments, there was an increase in the effective photochemical efficiency of PSII, the electron transport rate, the SPAD index, leaf succulence, total dry mass, and the stress tolerance index. EBL promotes beneficial effects on PSII integrity, the chlorophyll index, and leaf succulence in young tomato plants subjected to salinity levels of up to 6.0 dS m-1 .

ABSTRACT. Salinity is one of the environmental stresses that most cause losses in agricultural systems, including tomato production. Brassinosteroids, such as epibrassinolide (EBL), have multiple actions in essential processes in plants. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the contributions of EBL to the growth, physiology, and production of tomato plants under salinity. The experiment was conducted in a factorial scheme, with five levels of water salinity (0.5 [the control], 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 dS m-1) and two concentrations of EBL (0 and 10-6 M). Salt stress reduced tomato growth, relative water content, membrane integrity, gas exchange, and fruit production. However, the exogenous application of EBL attenuated the adverse effects, partially improving these characteristics at all salinity levels. EBL reduced electrolyte leakage and increased membrane integrity and relative water content in control and stressed plants. Additionally, it increased the content of photosynthetic pigments, stomatal conductance, transpiration, and photosynthesis, which led to higher leaf dry mass production, fruit transverse diameter, and production per plant. Therefore, our results confirmed that foliar application of EBL improved the characteristics of stressed and non-stressed tomato plants.

RESUMO O uso de água salina na irrigação provoca redução no crescimento e produtividade de culturas agrícolas. Objetivou-se avaliar a germinação, emergência, fisiologia e crescimento de mudas de duas variedades de maracujazeiro, sob irrigação com água salina. A pesquisa foi conduzida em duas etapas: a primeira em laboratório e a segunda em casa-de-vegetação, sob delineamento em blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 2 x 4, correspondendo a duas variedades de maracujazeiro (BRS RC e BRS GA1) e quatro níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (0,2 dS m-1; 2,2 dS m-1; 4,2 dS m-1; e 6,2 dS m-1), com quatro repetições. A variedade BRS GA1, apesar de ser mais sensível ao nível de salinidade do que a BRS RC, na fase de germinação, apresenta maior índice e porcentagem de germinação. Durante o crescimento das mudas, a variedade BRS GA1 não sofre danos no aparelho fotossintético, como evidenciado pela maior biomassa das folhas que na BRS RC.

ABSTRACT The use of salt water in irrigation can reduce the growth and yield of agricultural crops. This study aimed to assess the germination, emergence, physiology and growth of passion fruit seedlings of two varieties under salt water irrigation. The study was conducted in two stages: the first carried out in a laboratory and the second in a greenhouse, using a randomized block design, in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme, corresponding to two passion fruit varieties (BRS RC and BRS GA1) and four levels of irrigation water electrical conductivity (0.2 dS m-1, 2.2 dS m-1, 4.2 dS m-1 and 6.2 dS m-1), with four replications. The BRS GA1 variety exhibited the highest germination index and rate, in the germination stage, despite being more sensitive to salinity than the BRS RC. There was no damage to the photosynthetic apparatus in the BRS GA1 seedlings during growth, as demonstrated by the higher leaf biomass, when compared to the BRS RC variety.

RESUMO Manejos mais eficientes de plantas daninhas podem ser alcançados com diferentes estratégias, visto que a população dessas plantas é modificada de acordo com o sistema utilizado. Objetivou-se avaliar métodos de solarização associados a diferentes coberturas vegetais para o controle de plantas daninhas na cultura do feijão-caupi. Os métodos utilizados foram solarização do solo, com plástico e com coletor solar, associados às coberturas vegetais mamona, crotalária e vegetação espontânea. A fitossociologia das plantas daninhas foi calculada pela frequência, densidade e abundância. As famílias mais infestantes foram Asteraceae, Poaceae e Amaranthaceae. A espécie de maior frequência, densidade e abundância nos tratamentos sem cobertura de solo foi Cyperus rotundus, enquanto Bidens spp. ocorreu apenas em solo não solarizado e sem cobertura. O maior número de plantas daninhas foi encontrado nos tratamentos sem cobertura morta em solo sem solarização ou solarizado com plástico, o qual foi menos eficiente que o coletor solar. A cobertura morta inibe a infestação de plantas daninhas na cultura de feijão-caupi, independentemente da solarização do solo. Contudo, a cobertura com crotalária é mais eficiente na solarização com o plástico que com o coletor solar.

ABSTRACT More efficient weed control managements can be achieved through different strategies, given that the population of these plants changes according to the system used. This study aimed at assessing solarization methods associated with different mulches for weed control in the cowpea crop. The methods used were soil solarization, with plastic sheeting and with solar collector, associated with the following mulches: castor bean, rattlepod and spontaneous vegetation. Weed phytosociology was calculated by frequency, density and abundance. The most infesting families were Asteraceae, Poaceae and Amaranthaceae. The species with the highest frequency, density and abundance in the treatments without mulching was Cyperus rotundus, while Bidens spp. occurred only in non-solarized soil and without mulching. The largest number of weeds was found in the treatments without mulching in non-solarized soil or soil solarized with plastic sheeting, the latter being less efficient than the solar collector. Mulching inhibits the weed infestation in cowpea crops, irrespective of soil solarization. However, rattlepod as mulch is more efficient in the solarization with plastic sheeting than with a solar collector.
