Resumo O que a colaboração entre Florestan Fernandes, Aldo Solari e o Instituto Latino-americano de Relações Internacionais, órgão do Congresso pela Liberdade da Cultura, explica sobre as ideias do sociólogo entre 1969 e 1972? A análise de documentos oficiais do instituto e correspondências e textos de Florestan e Solari sugere que esse episódio revela um sociólogo preocupado com a manutenção de espaços científicos num continente marcado pelo autoritarismo, o que permite matizar a periodização entre fases “acadêmico-reformista” e “político-revolucionária”. Argumenta-se que, do ponto de vista do instituto, a parceria com Florestan era crucial para produzir legitimidade intelectual para suas ações.

Abstract What does the collaboration between the sociologist Florestan Fernandes, Aldo Solari, and the Latin American Institute of International Relations (ILARI), an organ of the Congress for Cultural Freedom, tell us about Fernandes’s thinking between 1969 and 1972? The analysis of official ILARI documents and correspondence and texts by Fernandes and Solari suggests that this episode reveals Fernandes’s concern with defending space for science on a continent marked by authoritarianism, thereby enabling a more nuanced understanding of his trajectory than one marked by two distinct phases, “reformist-academic” and “revolutionary-political.” From ILARI’s perspective, the partnership with Fernandes is revealed as critical in lending its actions intellectual legitimacy.

Resumo Nas últimas duas décadas ocorreu uma expansão dos programas de pós-graduação em ciências sociais e, ao mesmo tempo, uma crescente pressão, por parte das agências financiadoras, para a “internacionalização”. Tal processo não é isento de contradições, muitos já apontados na literatura, como a dificuldade de “internacionalizar” programas relacionados às humanidades. Neste sentido, o presente estudo discute os principais fatores explicativos da internacionalização de docentes das ciências sociais. Para tanto, desenvolve uma descrição dos aspectos relacionados à internacionalização da carreira dos professores e, ao final, identifica os fatores preponderantes para este processo, a partir de um survey on-line nacional. Os principais resultados são: realização de pós-doutorado no exterior é mais significativo para internacionalização do que doutorado sanduíche; antropologia tem indicadores de internacionalização maiores do que sociologia e ciência política, embora não seja possível inferir as causas; docentes de programas considerados como periféricos compensam a dificuldade de internacionalização com “estratégias de baixo custo”.

Abstract In the last two decades, graduate programs in social science grew in number, while funding agencies began to push for its ‘internationalization’. This process is highly contradictious, and scholarship demonstrates how difficult it is to internationalize programs in the Humanities’ area. The present study discuss the main explaining factors behind the internationalization of scholars in social sciences. It analyzes a national on-line survey to describe the main aspects related to the internationalization of scholars careers and identify its dominant causes. The main results are the following: doing a post-doc abroad is more important to internationalization than studying for a short-time period during PhD period; The area of anthropology is more internationalized than sociology and political science, though it is not clear which are the causes for this result; professors in peripheral programs employ a low-cost approach to compensate for the lack of internationalization

Resumo Este artigo analisa as práticas de territorialização da Fundação Brasil Central (1943-1967) com o objetivo de discutir o state-building em contextos periféricos. Por meio da análise de relatórios, cartas e publicações oficiais da FBC, argumenta-se que a indefinição sobre o espaço real do “Brasil Central” era central para o processo de acumulação territorial promovido pela referida fundação. O artigo se debruça sobre alguns casos empíricos em torno de conflitos por terras para demonstrar as consequências violentas desse processo sobre os moradores e trabalhadores locais.

Abstract This article analyzes the territorial practices of Fundação Brasil Central (1943-1967) in order to discuss state-building in peripheral contexts. By looking at FBC’s reports, letters, and official magazines, I argue that the absence of a clear definition of the boundaries of Central Brazil was central for the process of territorial accumulation FBC was pushing forward. The article focuses on a few selected empirical cases of land conflicts to demonstrate the violent outcomes of this process for the local population and workers.

Resumo O artigo estabelece as bases para um diálogo entre os estudiosos do pensamento social brasileiro e os historiadores da sociologia como disciplina. Para atingir esse objetivo, analiso os desenvolvimentos recentes no campo da história da sociologia, destacando a incorporação de métodos historiográficos e a emergência de uma abordagem transnacional, que aponta para o projeto de uma história global da disciplina. Critico os limites eurocêntricos desse campo e argumento que as tendências recentes de pesquisa na área do pensamento social brasileiro podem ajudar a superar tal limitação. Finalmente, analiso brevemente os obstáculos que impedem tal diálogo e aponto possíveis estratégias para superá-los.

Abstract The article lays the foundation for a dialog between scholars of Brazilian social thought and historians of sociology as a discipline. In order to achieve this objective, I analyze recent developments in the field of the history of sociology, highlighting the incorporation of historiographic methods and the emergence of a transnational approach, which points toward a global history of the discipline. I criticize the Eurocentric limits of this field and argue that recent research trends in the area of Brazilian social thought can help overcome this limitation. Finally, I briefly analyze the obstacles that impede this dialog and indicate possible strategies for overcoming them.

O artigo analisa a obra do sociólogo Alberto Guerreiro Ramos como parte do campo da sociologia periférica. Por meio de uma leitura interna de seus textos escritos na década de 1950, sugere-se que uma abordagem transnacional de sua produção intelectual pode contribuir para inserir a história do pensamento social brasileiro no campo da história global da sociologia no pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial.

This article analyzes the works by sociologist Alberto Guerreiro Ramos as a part of the field of peripheral sociology. From an internal reading of his texts written in the 1950s, we suggest that a transnational approach of his intellectual output may contribute to inserting the history of Brazilian social thought in the field of the global history of post-WWII sociology.

L’article analyse l’oeuvre de Alberto Guerreiro Ramos en tant que partie du champ de la sociologie périphérique. Par une lecture interne de ses textes écrits dans les années 1950, nous partons de l’hypothèse selon laquelle une approche transnationale de sa production intellectuelle peut contribuer à insérer l’histoire de la pensée sociale brésilienne dans le champ de l’histoire mondiale de la sociologie post Deuxième Guerre Mondiale.

As ciências sociais nas últimas décadas redescobriram a relevância do espaço como categoria de análise. O artigo discute esse spatial turn a partir da perspectiva do pensamento social brasileiro, enquadrado aqui como uma forma de imaginação periférica. Ao analisar a longa história da reflexão sobre o espaço entre intelectuais e escritores brasileiros, sugiro que esses escritos clássicos sobre a terra e o sertão fornecem subsídios importantes para se pensar a espacialidade na sociedade contemporânea de uma forma não eurocêntrica.

The social sciences over the last few decades have rediscovered the relevance of space as an analytic category. The article discusses this 'spatial turn' from the perspective of Brazilian social thought, framed here as a form of peripheral imagination. Analyzing the long history of reflection on space among Brazilian intellectuals and writers, I suggest that these classic writings on the land and Brazil's sertão region provide important material for thinking of spatiality in contemporary society in a non-Eurocentric way.

This article discusses the relationship between state ideas and practices based on a case study of the Fundação Brasil Central (FBC), an agency created by the Estado Novo regime in 1943 and whose activities extended until 1967. The hypothesis is that Brazilian social thought should be analyzed as a cultural repertoire that produces effects on social life and the state. The article thus analyzes material from the FBC archives and travel records, geopolitical treatises, and other text sources published from the First Republic through the initial years of the Vargas Era. The aim is to show how narratives on Central Brazil shaped the language and practice of public administration.

Cet article discute le rapport entre les idées et pratiques des états à partir d'une étude de cas centrée sur la Fundação Brasil Central (FBC), institution créée par l'Estado Novo en 1943 et dont les activités se sont prolongées jusqu'en 1967. L'hypothèse est qu'on doit analyser la pensée sociale brésilienne comme un répertoire culturel qui produit des effets sur la vie sociale et sur l'Etat. Pour cela, l'article analyse un matériel d'archives de la FBC et des livres de voyage ainsi que des traités de géopolitique et d'autres sources de textes publiés au long de la Première République et dans les premières années de l'Ere Vargas. Le but est de montrer comment des récits sur le Brésil central ont configuré le langage et la pratique bureaucratique.

My working hypothesis is that the spatial images contained in some of the reflections by "interpreters of Brazil", like the Amazonian writings of Euclides da Cunha and the incipient comparative sociology of Vicente Licínio Cardoso, are not related to an essentialist search for a fixed cultural identity, but to a vision of a national civilizing process that highlights the pragmatism and openness of this experience. I contend that the "land", as outlined by these figures, approaches Brazilian society to other national formations - Russia and America -, thereby shaping a political sociology from the periphery.

On part de l'hypothèse que les images spatiales trouvées chez quelques-uns des "interprètes du Brésil" - dans les textes amazoniens d'Euclides da Cunha et les débuts de la sociologie comparée de Vicente Licínio Cardoso - ne tiennent pas de la recherche essentialiste d'une identité culturelle fixe, mais plutôt d'une optique du processus civilisateur brésilien, qui met l'accent sur le pragmatisme et la dimension ouverte de cette expérience. On avance que la conception de "terre", telle que l'ébauchent ces personnages, rapproche la société brésilienne de celle d'autres pays - Russie et États-Unis - ce qui déboucherait sur une sociologie politique de la périphérie.

Este artigo procura analisar interpretações do Brasil assentadas na idéia de que seríamos uma "Rússia Americana". Para tanto, analiso as contribuições de Gilberto Freyre, Otávio Velho e Vicente Licínio Cardoso, e apresento brevemente o caso russo, a partir das obras clássicas de Franco Venturi e Isaiah Berlin. Argumento ao longo do texto que essa percepção de que o Brasil teria uma geografia social "russa" implica a produção de um americanismo específico, que encontra sua maior expressão no pensamento de Vicente Licínio Cardoso e em suas idéias que conjugam fordismo e arielismo.

This article seeks to analyse Brazil's interpretations founded on the idea that we would be an "American Russia". in order to do so, I analyse the contributions of Gilberto Freyre, Otávio Velho and Vicente Licínio Cardoso, and I briefly present the russian case, using the works of Franco Venturi and Isaiah Berlin. I suggest that this perception implies the production of an especific type of americanism, wich finds its greater expression on the unusual combination between fordism and arielism made by Vicente Licínio.
