Abstract The Portuguese revolution, in addition to being viewed as a logical consequence of the last 15 years of the Salazar dictatorship (war, migrations, urbanization, deruralization, feminization of the public sphere), must be read in the context of the new political culture which, since the end of the 1950s (anti-colonial emancipalism, the Cuban revolution, 1968), gave the Left a boost. This, however, has little to do with the start of a third wave of democratization, as defined by Samuel Huntington and negotiated transitions with a liberal-democratic genesis that are very different from the political and social rupture that happened in Portugal. The most studied example of this third wave is the Spanish. In this article, I discuss the comparison that has been more or less systematically drawn between the Portuguese revolution and the Spanish transition, the latter taken as a positive counter-model to the former based on binary arguments such as moderation/radicality, violence/reconciliation, negotiation/rupture.

Resumo A Revolução portuguesa, além de uma consequência lógica dos últimos 15 anos da ditadura salazarista (guerra, migrações, urbanização, desruralização, feminização da esfera pública), deve ser lida no contexto da nova cultura política que, desde o final dos anos 1950 (emancipalismo anticolonial, Revolução cubana, 1968), deu às esquerdas um impulso que tem pouco a ver com o arranque de uma terceira vaga de democratização, como a define Samuel Huntington, e das transições negociadas e de génese liberal-democrática muito diferentes da rutura política e social que ocorreu no país. O exemplo mais estudado desta terceira vaga é o caso espanhol. Neste artigo, discuto a comparação que de forma mais ou menos sistemática se tem feito entre a Revolução portuguesa e a Transição espanhola, a primeira tomada como contramodelo positivo da segunda a partir dos argumentos binários como moderação/radicalidade, violência/reconciliação, negociação/rutura.

Résumé La révolution portugaise, en plus d’être une conséquence logique des 15 dernières années de la dictature de Salazar (guerre, migration, urbanisation, déruralisation, féminisation de la sphère publique), doit être lue dans le contexte de la nouvelle culture politique qui, depuis la fin des années 1950 (émancipation anticolonial, révolution cubaine, 1968), a donné à la gauche un élan qui n’a pas grand-chose à voir avec le début d’une troisième vague de démocratisation, telle que définie par Samuel Huntington, de transitions négociées avec une genèse libérale-démocratique très différente de la rupture politique et sociale qui s’est produite au Portugal. L’exemple le plus concret de cette troisième vague est le cas espagnol. Dans cet article, j’aborde la comparaison qui a été faite de manière plus ou moins systématique entre la révolution portugaise et la transition espagnole, la première prise comme un contre-modèle positif de la seconde en s’appuyant sur des arguments binaires tels que modération/radicalité, violence/réconciliation, négociation/rupture.

Resumo O projeto de criação de uma cidadania europeia comum pede aos sistemas educativos dos vários estados-membros da União Europeia (UE) que contribuam para a formação de cidadãos europeus críticos/as e ativos/as relativamente ao objetivo de prossecução e aperfeiçoamento do projeto europeu. Em Portugal, estudos anteriores ao nível do ensino secundário identificaram sérias lacunas, tanto nos currículos como nos manuais escolares de algumas disciplinas, nas abordagens pedagógicas sugeridas para o processo de ensino/aprendizagem acerca dessa dimensão europeia. Neste artigo, procurou perceber-se que tipos de atividades extra e co-curriculares as escolas têm vindo a dinamizar no sentido de complementar essas lacunas. Para tal, foram entrevistados/as 16 professores/as de 4 escolas do ensino secundário português. Os seus discursos permitiram identificar vários tipos de atividades extra e co-curriculares que têm vindo a ser dinamizadas pelas escolas para aumentarem o conhecimento e o nível de reflexividade dos/as estudantes sobre a UE. A análise desses relatos permitiu ainda identificar potencialidades e limitações inerentes ao desenvolvimento destas atividades, assim como produzir algumas recomendações para que as escolas possam dar uma contribuição mais eficaz ao projeto de consolidação de uma cidadania europeia ativa e crítica.

Abstract The project of creating a common European citizenship requires that the educational systems from the different member-states of the European Union (EU) contribute to the education of European citizens that are critical and active regarding the objective of continuing and perfecting the European project. In Portugal, previous studies of upper secondary education have shown serious shortcomings, both in the curricula and the textbooks of several subjects, in the pedagogical approaches suggested for the process of teaching/learning about this European dimension. In this article, we have tried to find out which kind of extra and co-curricular activities the schools have been organizing to fill the previously mentioned shortcomings. To that end, we have interviewed 16 teachers from 4 different schools of the Portuguese upper secondary educational system. Their accounts have allowed us to identify several kinds of extra and co-curricular activities that have been implemented by their schools in order to increase their students´ level of knowledge and reflexiveness regarding the EU. The analysis of these accounts has also allowed us to identify both the potential and limitations involved in developing these activities and to make some general recommendations towards improving the conditions for the schools to give a more efficient contribution to the objective of consolidating a active and critical European citizenship.
