RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a atividade de algumas enzimas digestivas em quatro espécies de peixes com hábitos alimentares diferentes. O conhecimento das atividades dessas enzimas pode nos ajudar a compreender os processos digestivos das espécies. As espécies escolhidas para este estudo foram Ctenopharyngodon idella (herbívoro), Rhamdia quelen (onívoro), Leporinus obtusidens (onívoro) e Hoplias malabaricus (carnívoro). O trato digestivo dessas espécies foi dividido em quatro partes para estimar a atividade enzimática: estômago, intestino anterior, médio e posterior. Ctenopharyngodon idella teve a maior atividade da amilase e maltase em todas as porções do intestino, seguido por L. obtusidens . A maior atividade da tripsina foi observada em todas as porções do intestino de H. malabaricus , seguido pelo intestino médio de L. obtusidens e o intestino anterior de C. idella . A maior atividade de quimotripsina foi encontrada em todas as partes do intestino do C. idella , seguida pelo intestino anterior de R. quelen, L. obtusidens e H. malabaricus . No estômago, a atividade de protease ácida foi significativamente menor em R. quelen e L. obtusidens comparado com H. malabaricus. Ctenopharyngodon idella mostrou alta atividade de enzimas que hidrolisam carboidratos, representadas neste estudo por amilase e maltase e H. malabaricus mostrou maior atividade de proteases e baixa atividade de amilase.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to verify the activity of some digestive enzymes in four fish species with different feeding habits. Knowledge of these enzymatic activities can help us to understand the species' digestive processes. The species chosen for this study were Ctenopharyngodon idella (herbivore), Rhamdia quelen (omnivore), Leporinus obtusidens (omnivore) and Hoplias malabaricus (carnivore). The digestive tract of these species was divided into four portions to estimate enzymatic activity: stomach, anterior, mid and posterior intestine. Ctenopharyngodon idella had the highest amylase and maltase activities in all portions of the gut, followed by L. obtusidens . The highest trypsin activity was observed in all gut portions of H. malabaricus, followed by the mid intestine of L. obtusidens and the anterior intestine of C. idella . The highest chymotrypsin activity was found in all portions of C. idella followed by the anterior intestines of R. quelen, L. obtusidens and H. malabaricus . In the stomach, acid protease activity was significantly lower in R. quelen and L. obtusidens compared to H. malabaricus. Ctenopharyngodon idella showed high activity of enzymes that hydrolyze carbohydrates, represented in this study by amylase and maltase and H. malabaricus showed higher protease activity and low amylase activity.

RESUMO: Substâncias húmicas são compostos orgânicos que possuem elevado peso molecular e são formadas pela decomposição da matéria orgânica de plantas. As substâncias húmicas compreendem ácidos húmicos, ácidos fúlvicos e humina. Os ácidos húmicos (AH) têm mostrado serem capazes de proporcionar proteção parcial das membranas biológicas de peixes em águas com baixo pH, substituindo a ação protetora do Ca2+. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo observar o crescimento de juvenis de jundiá ( Rhamdia quelen ) expostos a pH's 5,5 e 6,5 com diferentes níveis de AH: 0, 10, 25 e 50mg L-1. Os resultados demostram que, independentemente do pH, o AH foi altamente prejudicial para o crescimento do jundiá, uma vez que, quanto maior era a concentração de AH, menor era o ganho de peso e a ingestão de alimentos, resultando em menor biomassa e taxa de crescimento específico inferior dos juvenis. Assim, os AH são extremamente prejudiciais para o desempenho de juvenis de jundiá nas concentrações testadas.

ABSTRACT: Humic substances are organic compounds that possess high molecular weight and are formed by the decomposition of plant materials. Humic substances comprise humic acids, fulvic acids and humin. Humic acids (HA) have shown to be able to provide some protection to biological membranes of fish in water with low pH, replacing the protective action of Ca2+. Thus, this studyaimed to observe growth of silver catfish ( Rhamdia quelen ) juveniles exposed to pHs 5.5 and 6.5 and to different levels of HA: 0, 10, 25 and 50mg L-1. Results showed that, irrespective of pH, HA was highly detrimental to silver catfish growth, since the higher the concentration of HA, the lower the weight gain and feed intake, resulting in lower biomass and lower specific growth rate of juveniles. Hence, HA is extremely damaging to the performance of silver catfish juveniles in the tested concentrations.

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os parâmetros morfológicos, produtivos e bromatológicos de híbridos de milho para silagem em condições de ambiente irrigado e sequeiro. Realizado na safra agrícola 2010/2011 em Campos Borges - RS. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos ao acaso em esquema fatorial, sendo dois ambientes x oito híbridos, dispostos em três repetições. A análise de variância revelou significância para interação ambiente x híbridos de milho paraaltura de planta, massa fresca e seca por hectare, percentagem de matéria seca, material mineral, proteína bruta, fibra em detergente neutro, lignina, carboidratos totais e não fibrosos. No ambiente irrigado os híbridos apresentam maior altura de planta, teor de clorofila, área foliar, massa fresca e seca por hectare, percentagem de matéria seca na silagem, pH, material mineral, fibra em detergente neutro, celulose e lignina. Os teores de carboidratos não fibrosos e carboidratos totais revelaram-sesuperiores para o ambientesequeiro. O teor de proteína bruta apresentou-se mais elevado em sequeiro. O híbrido HS1356 mostrou-se superior em ambiente irrigado para os caracteres altura de planta, massa fresca e seca por hectare, material mineral e fibra em detergente neutro. Em ambiente irrigado o híbrido HT4 originou um maior teor de proteína bruta na silagem.

The aim of this study was to assess silage corn hybrids morphological, productive and bromatological parameters in irrigated and non-irrigated environmental conditions. The research was held in the 2010/2011 season, Campos Borges - RS. The experimental design was randomized blocks in factorial design, with two environments x eight corn hybrids, arranged in three replications. Analysis of variance showed environment x corn hybrids interaction significance for plant height, fresh and dry matter per hectare, dry matter percentage, mineral matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, lignin, total and non-fibrous carbohydrates. In the irrigated environment, hybrids showed higher plant height, chlorophyll content, leaf area, fresh and dry matter per hectare, silage dry matter percentage, pH, mineral material, neutral detergent fiber, cellulose and lignin. Non-fibrous and total carbohydrate levels were higher for the non-irrigated environment. Crude protein content was higher in the non-irrigated environment. In the irrigated environment HS1356 hybrid showed higher plant height, fresh and dry matter per hectare, mineral material and neutral detergent fiber. HT4 hybrid led to higher silage crude protein content in the irrigated environment.

ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of soybean oil in the diet of female silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) and its effect on the growth, composition, lipid profile and fillet acceptability thereof. In this experiment, 144 fish (237.75 ± 22.35 g) were distributed among 18 tanks (280 L) for 80 days. The use of 10% soybean oil in the fishes’ diet promoted higher weights (373.82 g) and better feed conversión ratios (1.5) for female silver catfish. The soybean oil levels tested did not interfere with fillet acceptability. Increasing soybean oil in the diet increased the quantity of unsaturated fatty acids in the fillets, which enhanced their nutritional quality. The use of 10% soybean oil is recommended for the female silver catfish diet.

RESUMEN. El objetivo de este estudio fue el de evaluar la inclusión de aceite de soya en dietas, sobre el crecimiento, la composición, el perfil lipídico y la aceptabilidad de los filetes de hembras de bagre plateado (Rhamdia quelen). En este experimento realizado durante 80 días, se utilizaron un total de 144 peces (237,75 ± 22,35 g) distribuidos en 18 tanques (280 L). Se observó que el uso de 10% de aceite de soya en la dieta promueve mayor peso (373,82 g) y una mejor relación de conversión alimenticia (1,5) para las hembras de bagre plateado. Los niveles de aceite de soya de las muestras no interfirieron en la aceptabilidad del filete. El aumento de aceite de soya en la dieta aumentó la cantidad de ácidos grasos insaturados en el filete, mejorando así su calidad nutricional. Se recomienda el uso de 10% de aceite de soya en la dieta para las hembras de bagre plateado.

This study evaluates whether humic acid (HA; Aldrich) protects the silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824), against exposure to acidic pH. Survival, levels of Na+, Cl- and K+ plasma, hematocrit, hemoglobin and erythrocyte morphometry were measured. Fish were exposed to 0, 10, 25 and 50 mg L 1 HA at four pH levels: 3.8, 4.0, 4.2 and 7.0 up to 96 hours. None of the fish exposed to pH 3.8 survived for 96 hours into the experiment, and survival of fish subjected to pH 4.0 decreased when HA concentration increased. Plasma Na+ levels decreased when pH was acidic, with no influence of HA, while Cl- levels declined at low pH with increased HA concentration. The levels of K+ at pH 4.0 and 4.2 increased without HA. Hematocrit and hemoglobin augmented under the effect of HA. At pH 4.0 and 4.2, erythrocytes of fish not exposed to HA were smaller, an effect that was partially offset by the presence of HA, since the values at pH 7.0 were higher. Although HA showed some positive effects changes in hematological and plasma K+ª in silver catfish caused by exposure to acidic pH, the overall findings suggest that HA does not protect this species against acidic pH because it increased mortality and Cl- loss at pH 4.0.

Os efeitos do glifosato, um herbicida não seletivo (1,0 ou 5,0mg L-1), sobre a atividade de enzimas digestivas (estômago e intestino) foram avaliadas em juvenis de piava (Leporinus obtusidens) após 90 dias de exposição. A atividade da protease ácida, tripsina, quimiotripsina e amilase aumentaram com a elevação da concentração de glifosato. Esses resultados indicam que o glifosato afeta a atividade de enzimas digestivas nesta espécie e pode ser indicador da reduzida disponibilidade de nutrientes, quando peixes sobrevivem em água contaminada com este herbicida.

The effects of glyphosate, a nonselective herbicide (1.0 or 5.0mg L-1) on digestive enzymes activity (stomach and intestine) were evaluated in juveniles of piava (Leporinus obtusidens) after 90 days of exposure. The activity of acid protease, trypsin, chymotrypsin and amylase increased with the increase of glyphosate concentration. These results indicate that glyphosate affects digestive enzyme activities in this species, and may be an indicator of poor nutrient availability when fish survive in herbicide-contaminated water.

Nos procedimentos em piscicultura, os peixes são facilmente estressados nas diferentes etapas de criação. Assim, é importante o uso de anestésicos para prevenir injúrias físicas e promover a redução do metabolismo, resultando em melhor bem-estar aos peixes. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a indução anestésica em juvenis de carpa húngara (Cyprinus Carpio) expostos a diferentes doses de eugenol (20; 30; 40 e 50mg/L), ketamina (300; 600; 900 e 1200mg/L), xilazina (800; 1100; 2000mg/L) e da associação ketamina/xilazina (300/300; 600/600; 900/900 e 1200/1200mg/L). Cada dosagem foi testada em grupos de dez peixes escolhidos ao acaso (n=10), submetidos individualmente ao banho com anestésico em recipiente contendo 1 litro de água. Todos os procedimentos experimentais foram iguais nos ensaios. Após, foram analisados os tempos de anestesia (TA) e de recuperação (TR). Os anestésicos eugenol, ketamina e a associação ketamina/xilazina permitiram que os juvenis de carpa húngara atingissem a anestesia profunda. Entretanto, os dois últimos produtos testados causaram mortalidade em algumas doses. A xilazina não promoveu anestesia em nenhuma das doses testadas. Dentre os anestésicos testados, o eugenol na dose 50mg/L, demonstrou indução anestésica e tempo de recuperação satisfatório para juvenis de carpa.

In the aquaculture procedures, the fishes are easily stressed in differetn rearing phases. So, is important the use of anesthetics for to prevent physical injuries and promote metabolism decrease, resulting in improved welfare for fish. The aim of this study was analyze the anesthetical induction of Hungarian carp fingerlings (Cyprinus Carpio) displayed of the different dosages of eugenol (20, 30, 40 and 50mg/L), ketamine (300, 600, 900 and 1200mg/L), xylazine (800, 1100, 2000mg/L) and the ketamine/xylazine association (300/300, 600/600, 900/900 and 1200/1200mg/L). Each dosage was tested for ten fish, individually subjected to the anesthetic bath with container containing 1 liter of water. All experimental procedures were the same as in the tests. After, it was analyzed the anesthetic time (TA) and the recovery time (TR). The anesthetics eugenol, ketamine and the ketamine/xylazine association allowed the deep anesthesia, but xilazine didn't allow it. Among the anesthetics tested, eugenol at 50mg/L demonstrated better anesthetic induction and recovery time for carp juveniles.

Uma das demandas, na nutrição de peixes nativos, é a avaliação de fontes proteicas alternativas, que possam ser utilizadas em dietas. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o crescimento e a composição corporal de juvenis de jundiá submetidos a dietas com diferentes níveis de farinha de minhoca. Um total de 300 exemplares, com massa inicial média de 15,6 ± 5,65 g, foram distribuídos em 15 tanques de polipropileno (250 L), durante 30 dias. O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizado, composto por cinco tratamentos (10%, 20%, 30% e 40% de inclusão de farinha de minhoca e uma dieta controle) e três repetições, com 20 peixes por unidade experimental. Os peixes foram alimentados duas vezes ao dia, recebendo 5% do seu peso vivo em ração dia-1. Ao final do período experimental, foram avaliados a massa final, comprimento total e padrão, taxa de crescimento específico, fator de condição e ganho em massa relativo. Também foi realizada análise de composição corporal, sendo determinadas a umidade, cinzas e gordura e proteína corporal, além da glicose sanguínea. Para a massa e comprimento total e padrão, não houve influência da adição de farinha de minhoca na dieta. Os níveis de inclusão de farinha de minhoca influenciaram a taxa de crescimento específico, ganho em massa relativo e o fator de condição dos peixes. A farinha de minhoca pode ser incluída em até 30%, na dieta de juvenis de jundiá, sem comprometer o crescimento dos peixes.

One of the greatest demands, concerning native fish nutrition, is the evaluation of alternative protein sources that can be used in diets. This study aimed at evaluating the growth rate and body composition of jundiá juveniles fed with different levels of earthworm meal. A total of 300 fish, with an average initial weight of 15.6 g ± 5.65 g, were distributed in 15 polypropylene tanks (250 L), for 30 days. A completely randomized design with five treatments (10%, 20%, 30% and 40% of earthworm meal inclusion and a control treatment) and three replications, totaling 20 fish per experimental unit, was used. The fish were fed twice a day, getting 5% of their body weight in feed day-1. At the end of the experimental period, the final weight, total and standard length, specific growth rate, condition factor and relative weight gain were evaluated. The body composition was also analyzed, being determined the rates of moisture, ashes and body fat and protein, as well as blood glucose. The weight and total and standard length were not influenced by the addition of earthworm meal to the diet. The inclusion levels of earthworm meal affected the fish specific growth rate, relative weight gain and condition factor. The earthworm meal can be added up to 30%, in jundiá juveniles diets, without compromising fish growth.

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a influência da adição de farinha de resíduos de jundiá (Rhamdia quelen) na dieta de exemplares desta espécie sobre a bioquímica plasmática, parâmetros hepáticos e digestivos. No experimento I (EXP I), compararam-se dietas com 30% de farinha de carne e ossos suína (FCO), farinha de carcaça de jundiás com vísceras (FCJCV), farinha de carcaça de jundiá sem vísceras (FCJSV) e farinha de jundiás inteiros (FJI). No experimento II (EXP II), níveis de inclusão de FCJCV foram testados (0; 3,75; 7,5; 15 e 30%). No plasma, foram quantificadas proteínas totais circulantes, colesterol total, triglicerídeos, glicose, albumina e aminoácidos. No fígado, analisou-se glicose, amônia, proteínas totais, glicogênio, aminoácidos e transaminases. No estômago, foi determinada a atividade de protease ácida e, no intestino, tripsina e quimotripsina. No EXP I, foram observados menores níveis de glicose no plasma e alanina aminotransferase (ALT) no fígado, para o tratamento FCJSV, e maiores índices destes para FCO. A atividade da protease ácida e da quimotripsina foram menores para a FCO e maior para a FCJCV. No EXP II, os índices de aminoácidos livres e colesterol total no plasma aumentaram com a elevação dos níveis de inclusão da FCJCV na dieta. A incorporação de farinhas de resíduos de jundiá à dieta altera a bioquímica plasmática, os parâmetros hepáticos e digestivos dos juvenis de jundiá, porém essas alterações não influenciaram na saúde dos peixes, demonstrando sua qualidade nutricional e eficiência no uso em dietas para peixes.

The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of the addition of jundiá (Rhamdia quelen) waste meal in the diet of this species, on plasmatic biochemistry, liver and digestive parameters. Experiment I (EXP I) compared diets with 30% of meat and swine bones (FCO), Jundiá carcass meal with viscera (FCJCV), Jundiá carcass meal without viscera (FCJSV) and full Jundiá meal (FJI). In experiment II (EXP II), different FCJCV levels were tested (0, 3.75, 7.5, 15, and 30%). Total circulating proteins, cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose, albumin and amino acids were quantified in plasma. Glucose, ammonia, total protein, glycogen, amino acids and transaminases were analyzed in the liver. The acid protease activity was determined in the stomach, and trypsin and chymotrypsin activity were established in the intestine. EXP I, found a lower glucose concentration in plasma and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in the liver for FCJSV treatment and higher levels of these parameters for FCO treatment. The activity of acid protease and chymotrypsin were lower for FCO and higher for FCJCV. In EXP II, rates of free amino acids and total cholesterol in plasma increased with increasing levels FCJCV dietary. The incorporation of Jundiá waste meal diet modified plasmatic biochemistry, liver and digestive parameters of Jundiá juveniles, but these changes did not influence the fish health, demonstrating its nutritional quality and efficiency in fish diet.

Os diferentes manejos utilizados na piscicultura demandam intenso manuseio, causando estresse aos peixes. O uso de anestésicos é importante para contornar este problema. Este trabalho foi realizado para avaliar o uso de eugenol na indução e recuperação anestésica, em pacus de diferentes classes de peso. Foi desenvolvido um experimento em esquema fatorial 5x5, composto de cinco classes de peso (50 ± 5,61 g; 100 ± 9,36 g; 150 ± 12,29 g; 200 ± 12,73 g; e 250 ± 18,77 g) e cinco concentrações de eugenol (40 mg L-1, 80 mg L-1, 120 mg L-1, 160 mg L-1 e 200 mg L-1). A indução da anestesia foi dividida em quatro estágios, de acordo com o comportamento dos peixes sob efeito do anestésico, registrando-se o tempo de permanência em cada estágio, sendo avaliado o momento de insensibilização e o tempo de recuperação. Para o tempo de indução anestésica, observou-se efeito quadrático, ou seja, quando aumentou-se a dose, houve queda no tempo de indução, com tendência de estabilização em doses crescentes. As melhores respostas de indução anestésica verificadas para o pacu ocorreram nas dosagens de 175 mg L-1, 208 mg L-1, 203 mg L-1, 240 mg L-1 e 225 mg L-1, respectivamente para as classes de peso de 50 g, 100 g, 150 g, 200 g e 250 g. Já para o tempo de recuperação, não foi observada interação entre o menor tempo de indução e menor tempo de recuperação. Sendo assim, as doses que proporcionaram menor tempo de indução para as faixas de peso encontram-se entre 175 mg L-1 e 240 mg L-1.

The different practices used in fish breeding require intense handling, leading to fish stress. The use of anesthetics is important to overcome this problem. This study aimed at evaluating the impact of eugenol on the induction and anesthetic recovery of Piaractus mesopotamicus from different weight classes. An experiment was carried out in a 5x5 factorial scheme, consisting of five weight classes (50 ± 5.61 g, 100 ± 9.36 g, 150 ± 12.29 g, 200 ± 12.73 g and 250 ± 18.77 g) and five eugenol concentrations (40 mg L-1, 80 mg L-1, 120 mg L-1, 160 mg L-1 and 200 mg L-1). The anesthesia induction was divided into four stages, according to the behavior of the anesthetized fish, being the duration of each stage recorded, and the desensitization moment and recovery time evaluated. A quadratic effect was observed at the anesthetic induction time, i.e., when the dose increased, the induction time decreased, tending to stabilize for increasing doses. The best results for anesthetic induction were observed at the 175 mg L-1, 208 mg L-1, 203 mg L-1, 240 mg L-1 and 225 mg L-1 concentrations, respectively for the 50 g, 100 g, 150 g, 200 g and 250 g weight classes. No interaction between the shortest induction time and the shortest recovery time was observed. Thus, the doses which provided a lower induction time for the weight classes range between 175 mg L-1 and 240 mg L-1.

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento, a composição e o perfil lipídico corporal de jundiás criados em diferentes densidades de estocagem (DE: 4,2; 6,4; 8,6 e 10,8kg m-3) em sistema com recirculação de água. Durante 120 dias, 420 peixes (peso inicial=182,95±2,96g) foram alimentados uma vez ao dia, até a saciedade aparente, com dieta peletizada formulada. Observou-se que, quanto maior a DE utilizada, menor é o peso individual dos peixes, entretanto a biomassa por tanque aumentou (P<0,05). Melhor conversão alimentar (1,69) e maior quantidade de gordura intraperitoneal (3,92) foram observadas nos peixes submetidos à densidade 4,2kg m-3. A proteína corporal foi afetada pelas DEs. Ocorreu diminuição dos ácidos graxos saturados e aumento dos insaturados nos peixes de acordo com o aumento das DEs. Conclui-se que a densidade de estocagem influência no peso final e na produtividade por volume do jundiá.

The aim of this research was to evaluate growth and body composition of jundiá farmed at different stocking densities (SD: 4.2, 6.4, 8.6 and 10.8kg m-3) in a water re-use system. During 120 days, 420 fish were fed near to satiation once a day. It was observed that in the highest SD, the individual fish weight was lower, however the biomass per tank increased (P<0.05). The best feed conversion ratio (1.69) and intraperitoneal fat (3.92%) were observed in fish subjected to density of 4.2kg m-3. The body protein was affected by SD. Saturated fatty acids decreased and unsaturated fatty acids increased according to the increase of SD. It was concluded that stocking density influences the final size and yield per volume of jundiá.

Altos níveis de nitrito (NO2-) podem ocorrer em sistemas de cultivo com alta densidade de estocagem, mas análises sobre os valores de concentração letal e o efeito do NO2- em parâmetros metabólicos e no crescimento são escassos. Neste estudo foi analisada a concentração letal em 96 h (CL50-96h) para nitrito (NO2-) em juvenis de jundiá, Rhamdia quelen, e o efeito de quatro níveis de nitrito (0,06; 0,46; 1,19 e 1,52 mg.L-1) no crescimento e no lactato, glicose, glicogênio e proteína hepática e muscular. A CL50-96h para NO2- foi 20,46 (intervalo de confiança: 16,10-23,68) mg.L-1. No experimento de crescimento, a exposição ao NO2- não afetou o peso, comprimento ou taxa de crescimento específico, mas devido à mortalidade (66,7% e 100% após 20 e 40 dias, respectivamente), a biomassa dos juvenis expostos a 1,52 mg.L-1. NO2- foi significativamente mais baixa que a biomassa dos juvenis expostos aos outros tratamentos. Deste modo, o nível seguro de NO2- para o crescimento do jundiá é abaixo de 1,19 mg.L-1 (2% da CL50-96h). A exposição do jundiá ao NO2- por 40 dias diminuiu os níveis de lactato no músculo, mas esses níveis aumentaram nos exemplares mantidos em 1,19 mg.L-1 NO2-. Além disso, os níveis de glicose no músculo e fígado foram significativamente mais baixos nos jundiás expostos à concentração mais elevada de NO2-. Estes resultados indicam que a exposição crônica ao NO2- provoca uma oxidação anaeróbica do substrato para obtenção de energia.

High nitrite (NO2-) levels may develop in aquaculture systems due to high fish density, but studies of lethal concentration values and the effect of NO2- on metabolic parameters and growth are scarce. Consequently, in this study was verified the lethal concentration at 96 h (LC50-96h) for (NO2-) in juvenile silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen and the effect of four waterborne NO2- concentrations (0.06, 0.46, 1.19, and 1.52 mg.L-1) on growth, and hepatic and muscular lactate, glucose, glycogen and protein. Nitrite LC50-96h was 20.46 (confidence interval: 16.10-23.68) mg.L-1. In the growth experiment, exposure to NO2- did not affect weight, length or specific growth rate, but due to mortality (66.7% and 100% after 20 and 40 days, respectively), biomass of juveniles exposed to 1.52 mg.L-1 NO2- was significantly lower than the biomass of juveniles exposed to other treatments. Therefore, the safe level of nitrite for growth of silver catfish juveniles is below 1.19 mg.L-1 (2% of LC50-96h). Exposure of silver catfish to NO2- for 40 days reduced lactate levels in muscle, but lactate levels increased in liver tissue of fish maintained at 1.19 mg.L-1 NO2-. In addition, glucose levels in muscle and liver tissues were significantly lower in silver catfish exposed to the highest NO2- level. These results indicate that chronic NO2- exposure causes anaerobic substrate oxidation to meet energy demand.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento e a qualidade de carcaça de carpa-húngara alimentada com dietas em que houve substituição da farinha de carne suína por farelos de soja e canola, bem como determinar parâmetros bioquímicos do metabolismo dos peixes e a qualidade sensorial do filé. Cada um dos farelos contribuiu com 50% da proteína na mistura. Cinco dietas foram avaliadas, com níveis de substituição (0, 25, 50, 75 e 100%) da proteína da farinha de carne suína pela mistura das fontes vegetais. A inclusão de fontes proteicas vegetais nas dietas reduziu o crescimento, a deposição de gordura corporal e no filé, e o colesterol total dos peixes. A cor e o sabor dos filés não foram afetados pela inclusão das fontes proteicas vegetais. A dieta à base de farinha de carne suína é mais eficiente para o crescimento da carpa-húngara, e proporciona maior deposição de proteína no peixe inteiro e no filé.

The objective of this work was to evaluate growth and carcass composition of Hungarian carp fed with diets in which pork meat meal was replaced by a combination of canola and soybean meals, as well as to determine fish metabolism biochemical parameters and the sensorial quality of the fillet. Each plant meal contributed with 50% of the dietary protein of the mixture. Five diets were tested, with replacement levels of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of pork meal by plant protein sources. The inclusion of the plant-protein meal in the diet results in lower overall growth, lower body and fillet lipid deposition and lower total cholesterol of the fish. Color and flavor of the fillets were not affected by inclusion of plant protein sources. A pork meat meal based diet is more efficient for Hungarian carp growth, and provides higher whole fish and fillet protein deposition.

As enzimas digestivas influenciam a utilização dos alimentos em peixes, e seu conhecimento é importante para otimizar a formulação de dietas. Este trabalho descreve a atividade de enzimas digestivas em juvenis de jundiá alimentados com fontes protéicas. Os peixes foram alimentados com seis dietas (90 dias): MBY (farinha de carne e ossos + levedura de cana), SY (farelo de soja + levedura de cana), S (farelo de soja), MBS (farinha de carne e ossos + farelo de soja), FY (farinha de peixe + levedura de cana) e FS (farinha de peixe + farelo de soja). A cada 30 dias, foram analisadas as enzimas digestivas (tripsina, quimiotripsina e amilase) no intestino. No estômago, foi mensurada a protease ácida. Foram estimados os índices digestivo e hepato-somático, quociente intestinal, comprimento do trato digestório e ganho em peso. As atividades de tripsina e quimiotripsina foram maiores (p < 0,0001) nos peixes alimentados com as dietas com fontes de origem animal (MBY, MBS, FY e FS). As proteases alcalinas foram afetadas negativamente pelo farelo de soja nas dietas. A atividade de amilase apresentou grandes variações. Os peixes alimentados com as dietas MBY e MBS apresentaram maior atividade de protease ácida (p < 0,0001). Os ganhos em peso foram maiores nos peixes alimentados com as dietas MBS e FS (p < 0,05). Os maiores valores (p < 0,05) de comprimento do trato digestório foram verificados nos peixes alimentados com as dietas MBS e FY. A composição da dieta influencia na atividade de enzimas digestivas do jundiá.

Digestive enzymes activity influence feed utilization by fish, and its understanding is important to optimize diet formulation. This study reports the digestive enzyme activities of jundiá juveniles fed diets with protein sources. Fish were fed six experimental diets for 90 days: MBY (meat and bone meal + sugar cane yeast), SY (soybean meal + sugar cane yeast), S (soybean meal), MBS (meat and bone meal + soybean meal), FY (fish meal + sugar cane yeast) and FS (fish meal + soybean meal), and then sampled every 30 days and assayed in two intestine sections for digestive enzymes - trypsin, chymotrypsin and amylase - activities; gastric protease was assayed in the stomach. Digestive and hepatosomatic index, intestinal quotient, digestive tract length and weight gain were also measured. Trypsin and chymotrypsin activities were higher (p < 0.0001) in fish fed diets containing animal protein sources (MBY, MBS, FY and FS diets). Alkaline proteases were negatively affected by dietary soybean meal in the SY and S diets. Amylase activity had greater variation between diets and intestine sections. Fish fed MBY and MBS diets showed higher gastric protease activity (p < 0.0001). Weight gains were higher in fish fed the MBS and FS diets (p < 0.05). Highest values (p < 0.05) of digestive tract length were observed in fish fed MBS and FY diets, but no correlation with enzymes activities was found. Hepatosomatic index (HSI) was affected by diet composition. Dietary composition influenced digestive enzymes activities of jundiá.

O presente estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de comparar o crescimento e o rendimento de carcaça e a composição corporal de juvenis de jundiá (Rhamdia quelen) e carpa húngara (Cyprinus carpio) criados em sistema de recirculação de água, em mono e bicultivo, durante 60 dias, na fase de recria. Cinco tratamentos com três repetições foram testados: 100C=100% carpa; 100J=100% jundiá; 50C50J=50% carpa 50% jundiá; 75C25J=75% carpa 25% jundiá e 25C75J=25% carpa 75% jundiá, sendo utilizados 20 peixes por unidade experimental. Foram avaliados o peso (P), a biomassa total (BT), o fator de condição (FC), a conversão alimentar aparente (CAA), a taxa de crescimento específico (TCE), o rendimento de carcaça (RC), o índice digestivo-somático, o índice hepato-somático, o quociente intestinal, as composições centesimais dos peixes, as taxas de deposição de proteína e a gordura corporal. Não foram observadas diferenças no peso, no FC e na TCE dos jundiás (P>0,05). Para essas variáveis, as carpas submetidas ao tratamento 25C75J apresentaram valores significativamente maiores (P<0,05). O tratamento 100J produziu os melhores valores de CAA e BT e não diferiu do 25C75J. Em ambas as espécies, não houve diferença significativa para RC e índices digestivos. Em bicultivo, a proporção 25% carpa 75% jundiá resulta no maior peso individual das carpas húngaras e na maior biomassa total.

A study was conducted to evaluate growth, carcass yield and body composition of jundiá and common carp raised in mono or duoculture in a recirculated water system, for 60 days, during the growing. Five treatments were tested with three replicates: 100C=100% carp; 100J=100% jundiá, 50C50J=50% carp 50% jundiá; 75C25J=75% carp 25% jundiá and 25C75J=25% carp 75% jundiá. Twenty fishes were distributed in each experimental unit. It was evaluated weight (W), total biomass (TB), condition factor (CF), feed conversion rate (FCR), specific growth rate (SGR), carcass yield (YC), digestive-somatic index, hepatossomatic index, intestinal quotient and the proximate composition and body deposition of protein and fat. Considering jundiá performance, no statistical difference was observed for W, CF and SGR (P>0.05). Common carp from treatment 25C75J showed the highest values (P<0.05) for these variables. The best FCR and TB values were obtained for 100J and 25C75J treatments. In both species, there were no differences for carcass yield or digestive indexes. Thus, the treatment 25C75J, composed by 25%carp and 75%jundiá presented the highest final weight for carp and total biomass.
