ABSTRACT The term new museum idea is widely used in the historiography of natural history museums. However, there is no consensus regarding the ideas covered by the concept and, in some cases, there was a disconnection with its author and its origin. On the other hand, the new museum idea represents a synthesis on some topics of the reform that these institutions went through in the 19th century elaborated by one of its central thinkers. This study sought to elucidate the complexity of the term in its original formulation context, in the speech of the naturalist William Henry Flower (1831-1899) in the Museums Association’s meeting, in 1893. In doing so, we hope to advance in the more precise knowledge regarding the ideas of the period and its diverse actors. We also seek to shed light on the 19th century naturalists who resolved the challenges and took on the opportunities for museums, bequeathing us a new institutional model. Revisiting the 19th century, and its rich process of museological reflection, also inspires us to tackle on the new challenges of natural history museums in the 21st century, showing that some aspects that seemed guaranteed at the time, such as research and safeguarding of the collection, now deserve our special attention. The model of institution bequeathed to us underwent profound adaptations, serving an increasing number of citizens in the production of relevant knowledge, education, and communication.

RESUMO O termo nova ideia de museu é amplamente empregado na historiografia dos museus de história natural. Entretanto, existe uma falta de consenso quanto às ideias abrangidas pelo conceito e, em alguns casos, houve a desconexão com seu autor e sua origem. Por outro lado, a nova ideia de museu representa uma síntese sobre alguns tópicos da reforma que essas instituições passaram no século XIX elaborada por um de seus personagens centrais. Este artigo buscou elucidar a complexidade do termo em seu contexto de formulação original, no discurso do naturalista William Henry Flower (1831-1899), na reunião da Museums Association, em 1893. Ao fazê-lo, esperamos avançar no conhecimento mais preciso acerca das ideias do período e seus diversos autores. Buscamos igualmente lançar luz sobre como os naturalistas do século XIX superaram os desafios e aproveitaram as oportunidades oferecidas aos museus, legando-nos um novo modelo institucional. Revisitar o século XIX, e seu rico processo de reflexão museológica, contribui também para nossa reflexão quanto aos novos desafios dos museus de história natural no século XXI, mostrando que alguns aspectos que pareciam garantidos na época; como a pesquisa e a salvaguarda do acervo, hoje; merecem nossa atenção especial. O modelo de instituição que nos foi legado sofreu profundas adaptações, estando a serviço de um número cada vez maior de cidadãos na produção de conhecimento relevante, na educação e na comunicação.

RESUMO Este estudo realizou uma análise comparativa das estruturas narrativas apresentadas em doze exposições diferentes que abordam temas paleontológicos em museus do estado de São Paulo. Os dados foram coletados por meio de registros fotográficos. Os parâmetros da análise foram: temáticas das exposições; utilização de iconografia paleontológica e seus diversos tipos; uso de outros recursos expográficos; e o percurso expositivo. Os resultados mostraram que a temática usada com maior frequência foi a Assembleia Fossilífera, indicando uma possível correlação com o grande número de museus municipais organizados em torno de achados locais. Dentre as formas de iconografia paleontológica, a paleontografia, categoria que compreende todas as formas de representação visual de hipóteses paleontológicas a respeito da anatomia, da biologia e da ecologia de organismos, foi a mais utilizada, sendo apresentada predominantemente em segundo nível narrativo como suporte para uma informação prioritária. Dentre os recursos textuais, os mais empregados foram as legendas descritivas, oferecendo informações diretas sobre os objetos. Observou-se ainda que a maioria das exposições não determinou um percurso a ser seguido pelos visitantes, adotando uma abordagem não estruturada. Os achados sugerem que existe espaço para avanços na comunicação com os visitantes e que a análise estrutural apresentada pode ser útil na tomada de decisões por parte dos curadores. Este estudo representa a mais abrangente caracterização de narrativas paleontológicas e serve de base tanto para análises comparativas com outras exposições quanto para estudos sobre a percepção dos visitantes.

ABSTRACT This comparative analysis investigated the narratives presented in twelve different exhibitions addressing paleontological themes in museums in the state of São Paulo. Data were collected by means of photographic records of the exhibits. The parameters used for the analysis included: general themes of the exhibits; use of paleontological iconography; use of other expography; and the exhibition route. Results show that the most frequently used theme was Fossil Assemblages, indicating a possible correlation with the great number of municipal museums organized around local finds. Among the forms of paleontological iconography, ‘paleontography,’ a category comprising all forms of visual representation of paleontological hypotheses regarding the anatomy, biology and ecology of organisms, was the most widely used, being presented predominantly as a secondary narrative as support for a priority presentation, As for the textual resources, the most used were descriptive labels, offering direct information about the objects. Moreover, most exhibits did not determine a route for visitors to follow, adopting an unstructured approach. The findings suggest that there is room for improvement in communicating with visitors and that the structural analysis presented here can be useful in curatorial decision-making. This research represents the most comprehensive characterization of paleontological narratives and serves as a basis both for comparative analyses of other exhibitions and for further studies on visitor perception.

RESUMO Os animais são entidades polissêmicas que se tornaram objetos de museus tão cedo as coleções surgiram. Neste trabalho, o animal é entendido como interface entre duas áreas: enquanto objeto de estudo da zoologia e também como musealia. Discutem-se, então, as funções comunicativas exercidas por animais em exposições contemporâneas de museus de história natural. Para tanto, foram descritas e analisadas exposições de três museus sul-americanos de história natural: “Las aves” - Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales Bernadino Rivadavia; “Tiempo y materia: laberintos de la evolución” - Museo de La Plata; e “Conchas, corais e borboletas” - Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro. Nossa análise sugere que a construção teórica das narrativas está restrita aos textos e que os animais emprestam suas estruturas para ilustração, servindo como evidências da realidade e fornecendo materialidade da teoria, restritos ao seu apelo estético, tridimensionalidade e capacidade de atração de público.

ABSTRACT Animals are polysemic entities that became objects of museums as early collections have emerged. For this study, the animal is understood as interface between two areas: as cientific object of zoology stydies and as musealia. We discuss then the communication functions performed by animals in contemporaneous exhibitions of natural history museums. Therefore, it was described and analyzed in three exhibitions of South American natural history museums: Las aves - Museo de Ciencias Naturales Bernadino Rivadavia; “Tiempo y materia: laberintos de la evolución” - Museo de La Plata; e “Conchas, corais e borboletas” - Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro. Our analysis suggests that theoretical construction of the narratives is restricted to texts and animals lend their structures for illustration, serving as evidence of reality and providing materiality for the theory, restricted to its aesthetic appeal, three-dimensionality and capacity of public attraction.

Museus ditos tradicionais têm como centro de gravidade seus acervos. Estes, muitas vezes, precedem as próprias instituições: o clássico modelo de coleções privadas que encontram as vias institucionais públicas e a acessibilidade. O Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP) não é uma exceção a essa regra. Seu acervo está vinculado a coleções do século XIX, incorporadas ao Estado de São Paulo, em idas e vindas institucionais, até a configuração atual de museu universitário de excelência em pesquisa, ensino e extensão. Como tal, o MZUSP continua enfrentando desafios e necessidades de transformação e adaptação às novas realidades do século XXI.

“Traditional” museums have their center of gravity in collections that often precede the institutions themselves. It is the classic model of private collections that meet the public institutional channels and accessibility. The Museum of Zoology of the University of São Paulo is not an exception to this rule. Its collection is linked to collections of the nineteenth century incorporated to the State of São Paulo, in comings and goings of institutional settings to the current status as university museum of excellence in research, teaching and outreach. As such, MZUSP continues to face challenges and changing needs and adapt to new realities of the twenty-first century.

Ituglanis macunaima, espécie nova, é descrita da bacia do rio Araguaia, Mato Grosso, Brasil. Distingue-se de seus congêneres pela seguinte combinação de caracteres: fontanela posterior ausente; raios da nadadeira peitoral principalmente i,4; raios da nadadeira pélvica principalmente i,4; raios ramificados na nadadeira caudal principalmente 5,5; padrão de coloração mosqueado formado por manchas marrom-escuro irregulares ou levemente arredondadas distribuídas sobre uma matriz de tonalidade esbranquiçada; canal supra-orbital reduzido com poros s1 e s2 ausentes; canal infra-orbital reduzido com poros i1 e i3 ausentes; 2-3 costelas pleurais; e 35-38 vértebras. São fornecidas também a descrição e ilustração detalhada do esqueleto de I. macunaima. Comparações com outros tricomicterídeos são feitas e vários caracteres redutivos de I. macunaima são apontados e discutidos. Alguns pontos sobre a sistemática e filogenia do gênero também são comentados.

Ituglanis macunaima, new species, is described from the rio Araguaia basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil. It is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: posterior fontanel absent; pectoral-fin rays usually i,4; pelvic-fin rays usually i,4; branched caudal-fin rays usually 5,5; mottled color pattern formed by irregular to roundish dark brown spots on whitish background; reduced supraorbital canal with pores s1 and s2 lacking; reduced infraorbital canal with pores i1 and i3 lacking; 2-3 pleural ribs; and 35-38 vertebrae. A detailed description and illustrations of the skeleton of I. macunaima are also provided. Comparisons with other trichomycterids are presented, and several reductive traits of I. macunaima are discussed. Some comments are made about the systematics and phylogeny of the genus.
