Resumo Com base no conjunto de mais de 12 mil negativos de vidro e fotografias em papel, pertencente ao arquivo histórico sob a guarda da Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, o artigo busca compreender como as fotografias constroem um mundo imaginário e o oferecem como realidade. Para isso, reflete sobre as relações entre cultura fotográfica e vida institucional, com ênfase na construção do Pavilhão Mourisco, registrada sobretudo em imagens de dois dossiês, “Antigas Instalações” e “Arquitetura. Pavilhão Mourisco”, e discute elementos que concorrem para a produção desse mundo imaginário construído nos alicerces de crenças tanto no dispositivo fotográfico quanto na autoridade dos arquivos.

Abstract Based on over 12,000 glass plate negatives and paper prints of photographs kept in the historical archives of Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, this study seeks to understand how photographs construct an imaginary world and offer it as reality. The relationships between photographic culture and institutional life are discussed, focusing on the construction of the Moorish Castle, especially as recorded in images from two dossiers: “Old Facilities” (“Antigas Instalações”) and “Architecture. Moorish Pavilion (“Arquitetura. Pavilhão Mourisco”). Elements that contribute to the production of this imaginary world constructed on the basis of beliefs in photography and in the authority of archives are discussed.

Resumo O texto acopla o testemunho em forma de artigo de Licia do Prado Valladares - uma das principais estudiosas da questão urbana e das favelas no Brasil - sobre a importância da obra de Anthony Leeds, não obstante seu esquecimento pelas novas gerações de pesquisadores, depoimento dado por ocasião da celebração da constituição do Fundo Anthony Leeds, sob a guarda da Casa de Oswaldo Cruz/Fiocruz; e a nota técnica elaborada por Aline Lopes de Lacerda e Ana Luce Girão sobre o plano geral do arquivo e seu processo de constituição, acompanhada de fotografias, que, de acordo com as organizadoras do acervo, traduzem a riqueza de sua abordagem ao atribuir aos moradores, com os quais interagia em suas pesquisas, a condição de sujeitos ativos na coprodução da favela e da cidade.

Abstract This section presents two texts. First is the article by Licia do Prado Valladares - one of the leading scholars on the urban issue and favelas in Brazil - testifying to the importance of Anthony Leeds’s work, despite its forgetting by new generations of researchers. This testimony was given at the event celebrating the creation of the Anthony Leeds Archive under the safeguarding of Casa de Oswaldo Cruz/Fiocruz. Second is the technical note produced by Aline Lopes de Lacerda and Ana Luce Girão on the general plan of the archive and how it was assembled, accompanied by photographs that, according to the organizers of the collection, translation the richness of his approach in taking the residents with whom he interacted in his research as active subjects in the coproduction of the favela and the city.

Discute, com base nos debates travados pela teoria e metodologia arquivística, o estatuto da fotografia como documento de arquivo. Mediante a análise de alguns atributos e características do registro fotográfico, é destacada sua particularidade como documento, bem como a necessidade de um enfoque contextual de sua produção e de seus papéis no processo de constituição dos próprios arquivos. O objetivo do trabalho é questionar os métodos tradicionais de organização de fotografias em arquivos, que consideram esses documentos desvinculados do restante da documentação e que valorizam os conteúdos factuais das imagens sobre quaisquer outros elementos de significação.

Based on discussions dealing with archival theory and methodology, the intention is to discuss the status of the photograph as an archival record. By means of the analysis of some attributes and characteristics of the photographic record, its specificity as a record is highlighted, as well as the need for a contextual approach to its production and its roles in the process of constituting the archives per se. The scope of this work is to question traditional methods of organizing photographs into archives, which perceive these records as being removed from the remaining documentation and which value the factual content of the images above any other elements of meaning.

Examina questões metodológicas referentes ao tratamento técnico de arquivos, a partir da organização do arquivo de Carlos Chagas. Tendo como objeto as fotografias integrantes dessa documentação, discute a organização arquivística de fotografias e analisa alguns grupos dessas imagens, com enfoque nas fotografias relacionadas à descoberta da doença de Chagas em Lassance. O objetivo é verificar os processos de produção de sentido embutidos na metodologia de classificação desses documentos. Aponta em que medida as imagens relacionadas à estadia de Chagas em Lassance - para onde ele foi inicialmente combater a malária - assumiram novo sentido, diante da importância da descoberta da doença para a sua trajetória e na produção e disseminação de sua memória.

Centered on the organization of the Carlos Chagas archive, the article explores methodological concerns in the technical handling of such material. It discusses the archival organization of photographs and analyzes some groups of images from the Chagas archive, particularly photographs concerning the discovery of Chagas' disease, in Lassance, where the scientist initially went to combat malaria. The goal is to identify processes of production of meaning that are built into the methodology for classifying these documents. The article examines to what extent the images of Chagas' stay in Lassance took on new meaning because of the weight this discovery had on the scientist's career and likewise on the production and dissemination of his memory.

O artigo discute o uso de imagens como fonte de pesquisa para a história da medicina e da saúde pública, a partir da análise de um conjunto de fotografias sobre a produção da vacina contra a febre amarela, pertencente ao arquivo histórico da Fundação Rockefeller, depositado no Departamento de Arquivo e Documentação da Casa de Oswaldo Cruz/Fiocruz. Este arquivo foi produzido entre as décadas de 1930 e 1940 pelas instituições responsáveis pelos trabalhos de pesquisa e combate da doença no Brasil - a Fundação Rockefeller e o Serviço Nacional de Febre Amarela. Levantamos questões gerais recorrentes aos que utilizam imagens como fonte e/ou objeto de interpretação para a produção de conhecimento histórico, indicando os pontos de caráter teórico, conceitual e metodológico que envolvem esse processo para analisar imagens do conjunto arquivístico. A seguir, interpretamos as fotografias dos primórdios da produção da vacina antiamarílica.

Through analysis of a set of photographs on the production of a yellow fever vaccine in Brazil, the article discusses the use of images as a research source in the history of medicine and public health. Part of a historical archive belonging to the Fundação Rockefeller, stored at the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz/Fiocruz, the photographs were produced between the 1930s and 1940s by the Fundação Rockefeller and Brazil's National Yellow Fever Service, institutions then responsible for research and control of the disease in Brazil. The article raises some questions generally posed by those who employ images as sources or objects of interpretation in the production of historical knowledge, and also points to the theoretical, conceptual, and methodological aspects involved in this process of analyzing images. It goes on to interpret these photographs from the beginnings of the yellow fever vaccine.

Este artigo objetiva apresentar uma descrição comentada da coleção fotográfica sobre o Brasil pertencente aos arquivos da Fundação Rockefeller nos Estados Unidos, o Rockefeller Archive Center. Traz informações sobre a origem de tal documentação, bem como sobre as formas de sua acumulação, tendo em vista compreender o contexto de produção daqueles documentos visuais. Tais documentos dizem respeito às relações entre a Fundação Rockefeller e organismos brasileiros voltados para o combate a doenças como a febre amarela, a malária e a ancilostomíase entre os anos 1920 e 1940.

This article describes and comments on the collection of photographs of Brazil that belongs to the Rockefeller Foundation archives (Rockefeller Archive Center) in the United States. It also contains information about the origin of such documents and the way they were collected, as well as analyzes the context in which these visual documents were produced. They record the relationship between Rockefeller Foundation and Brazilian institutions engaged in the combat against yellow fever, malaria and ancyclostomiasis from 1920 to 1940.
