ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze the effect of citations from Emerging Sources Citation Index collection journals on the Impact Factor value of Latin American journals included in the Journal Citation Reports. Methods: 241 journals from the 2020 edition were used, representing 2% of the total Journal Citation Reports Social and Exact Sciences collections. For the research development, information of each journal was systematized, collecting useful descriptive data for each of the phases of analysis. From citations provided by emerging journals, a new calculation of Impact Factor was made, eliminating citations from these journals from the formula, to establish conclusions that contribute to debate on real effect they represent and this collection relevance, comparing this result with the impact factor without self-citations. The literature related to bibliometric indicators was also reviewed, especially Impact Factor, its different calculation methodologies, implications and repercussions and how they contribute to debate on its use as an evaluation measure. Results: although the citations issued by Emerging Sources Citation Index journals generally affect the Impact Factor value in selected sample, no significant decreases are observed. The highest percentage of citations issued comes from Brazil, with the largest number of journals in Journal Citation Reports, and is observed in Exact Sciences fields, with the greatest effect in quartile journals. Conclusions: the situation generated by emerging journals and number of citations they provide, is an added value that can be exploited in future to improve the journals themselves and visibility of the region within a source as important as Web of Science, in addition to having a greater number of journals in the central collection for research evaluation. RESUMEN Objetivo: analizar el efecto que tienen las citas provenientes de revistas de la colección Emerging Sources Citation Index en el valor del Factor de Impacto de las revistas latinoamericanas incluidas en los Journal Citation Reports. Método: se emplearon 241 revistas de la edición 2020, que representan el 2% del total de las colecciones de Ciencias Sociales y Exactas del Journal Citation Reports. Para el desarrollo de la investigación se sistematizó la información de cada revista, recogiendo datos descriptivos de utilidad para cada una de las fases de análisis. A partir de las citas que aportan las revistas Emerging Sources Citation Index, se realizó un nuevo cálculo del Factor de Impacto eliminando de la fórmula las citas provenientes de estas revistas, para establecer conclusiones que aporten al debate sobre el efecto real y relevancia de las revistas de esta colección y la relevancia, comparando este resultado con el Factor de Impacto sin autocitas. Se revisó además la literatura relacionada con los indicadores bibliométricos, especialmente el Factor de Impacto, sus distintas metodologías de cálculo, sus implicaciones y repercusiones y cómo estas contribuyen al debate sobre su uso como medida de evaluación. Resultados: aunque las citas emitidas por las revistas Emerging Sources Citation Index afectan en general el valor del Factor de Impacto en gran parte de la muestra seleccionada, no se observaron descensos significativos. El mayor porcentaje de citas emitidas por la colección emergente proviene de Brasil, con el mayor número de revistas en el Journal Citation Reports y se observa con mayor claridad su efecto en ámbitos de Ciencias Exactas y en revistas Q4 del Journal Citation Reports. Conclusiones: la situación que propician las revistas emergentes y el número de citas que aportan constituye un valor añadido, que en el futuro puede explotarse para el mejoramiento de las propias revistas y la visibilidad de la región dentro de una fuente tan importante como Web of Science, además de contar con mayor número de revistas en la colección central para la evaluación de la investigación. Resumen Se realiza una descripción de las colecciones, productos e indicadores bibliométricos de Web of Science, con especial énfasis en su utilidad e importancia en actividades de evaluación científica. Se exponen además sus principales limitaciones de cobertura y de indicadores, que impactan en el análisis de la producción científica en países y/o regiones periféricas y en áreas del conocimiento con menor representación en la fuente. También se comentan los aportes específicos de la base de datos en las distintas actividades y fases de la investigación científica como investigadores, revistas, grupos editoriales y bibliotecas. En concreto, se muestra el volumen de datos, se detallan sus colecciones, productos e indicadores, junto a la valoración de algunos aspectos en lo positivo y negativo. Se realizan comparativos con otras fuentes de información existentes en el mercado de la investigación científica y que igualmente permiten la realización de investigación bibliométrica, brindando al lector una importante caracterización de la herramienta y sus competidores, que ayude a conocer sus perspectivas de uso dentro del escenario de investigación. Las ideas desarrolladas y sistematizadas en el texto, permiten concluir que, a pesar de la relevancia de la misma para la actividad científica en distintos niveles y agregados, los sesgos de sus indicadores, la imposibilidad de acceso a la fuente en muchas instituciones y la existencia de otras herramientas con similares prestaciones y facilidades de uso, son aspectos que se deben tener en cuenta porque inciden en su aplicación, uso futuro y permanencia en el ecosistema de investigación.

Abstract A description of the collections, products and bibliometric indicators of Web of Science is made, with special emphasis on its usefulness and importance in scientific evaluation activities. The main limitations of coverage and indicators, which have an impact on the analysis of scientific production in peripheral countries and/or regions and in areas of knowledge with less representation in the source, are also discussed. The specific contributions of the database to the different activities and phases of scientific research, such as researchers, journals, publishing groups and libraries, are also discussed. Specifically, the volume of data is shown, its collections, products and indicators are detailed, together with the evaluation of some positive and negative aspects. Comparisons are made with other sources of information existing in the scientific research market, which also allow bibliometric research to be carried out, providing the reader with an important characterization of the tool and its competitors, which helps to know its perspectives of use within the research scenario. The ideas developed and systematized in the text lead to the conclusion that despite its relevance for scientific activity at different levels and aggregates, the biases of its indicators, the impossibility of accessing the source in many institutions and the existence of other tools with similar features and ease of use, are aspects that should be taken into account because they affect its application, future use and permanence in the research ecosystem.

Resumo Neste estudo, foi visualizada a estrutura intelectual da pesquisa em Biblioteconomia e Ciência da Informação na América Latina, sob a ótica das citações de periódicos. Além disso, foram identificados os principais periódicos que mais influenciam a estrutura intelectual. O estudo teve uma ênfase comparativa, uma vez que foram usados dados da Scopus e da Web of Science Core Collection. Mapas de cocitação de revistas foram elaborados e permitiram a identificação das comunidades de revistas. Diagramas estratégicos com medidas de citação e centralidade de intermediação também foram gerados para identificar periódicos centrais, em desenvolvimento e periféricos. Os resultados mostraram que a estrutura intelectual está fragmentada em comunidades que respondem ao contexto geográfico e à afinidade linguística. Apenas duas revistas são consideradas centrais: El Profesional de la Información e Ciência da Informação. Em geral, não houve muita diferença nas análises comparativas entre as duas bases de dados. Estudos complementares são necessários para mostrar quais fatores epistêmicos influenciam a atual fragmentação da estrutura intelectual da Biblioteconomia e Ciência da Informação na região ibero-americana.

Abstract In this study, the intellectual structure of the Iberoamerican research on Library and Information Science was visualized, from the perspective of journal citation relations. In addition, the core journals that most influence intellectual structure were identified. The study had a comparative emphasis since data from Scopus and Web of Science Core Collection were used. Journal co-citation maps were generated to identify the journal communities. Strategic diagrams with citation and betweenness centrality measures were also generated to identify core, under development, and peripheral journals. The results showed that the intellectual structure is fragmented into communities that respond to the geographic context and language affinity. Only two journals are considered core, El Profesional de la Información and Ciência da Informação. In general, there was not much difference in the comparative analyzes between the two databases. Complementary studies are necessary to show which epistemic factors influence the current fragmentation of the intellectual structure of the Library and Information Science research in the region.

Abstract This article analyzes the scientific production on ALFIN (2001-2020) in the areas of Library and Information Science. All BIC journals were identified from Latindex. Then it was verified whether these journals were contained in the following databases: Web of Science (Core Collection and Scielo Citation Index), Scopus, Lens and Dimensions. The Lens database was chosen for retrieving records on ALFIN and performing the bibliometric analysis, as it has the highest coverage of BIC journals in Latindex. The trend and growth of scientific production were evaluated according to authors and year of publication; the productivity of authors was analyzed using Lotka’s Law and the dispersion of the literature according to Bradford’s Law. The degree, index, and coefficient of collaboration were determined and collaboration networks were identified according to authors. The results show that scientific production on ALFIN in Latin America, reached a peak between 2017 and 2018, presenting a decrease from 2019 onwards. It was also observed that the production, collaboration among authors, and the quantity of journals is predominantly Brazilian

Resumen Este artículo analiza la producción científica sobre ALFIN (2001-2020) en las áreas de Bibliotecología y Ciencias de la Información. A partir de Latindex, se identificaron todas las revistas de ByCI. Luego se verificó, si dichas revistas, estaban contenidas en las siguientes bases de datos: Web of Science (Core Collection y Scielo Citation Index), Scopus, Lens y Dimensions. Para la recuperación de registros sobre ALFIN y realizar el análisis bibliométrico, se eligió la base de datos Lens, por tener la mayor cobertura de revistas de ByCI en Latindex. Se evaluaron la tendencia y el crecimiento de la producción científica según autores y año de publicación; se analizó la productividad de los autores mediante la Ley de Lotka y la dispersión de la literatura según la Ley de Bradford. Se determinó el grado, índice y coeficiente de colaboración y se identificaron las redes de colaboración según autores. Los resultados muestran que la producción científica sobre ALFIN en Latinoamérica, alcanzó un pico entre los años 2017 y 2018, presentando un decrecimiento a partir del año 2019. Asimismo, se observó que la producción, colaboración entre autores y la cantidad de revistas es predominantemente brasileña.
