Abstract: Due to the absence of studies related to the digital processing of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images in the semi-arid region of Brazil, the aim of this study was to test different filters for reducing speckle noise in SAR images, serving as a reference for choosing the most suitable filter for different studies in this vegetation. The filters: Gamma Map, Lee Sigma, Median, Frost and Refined Lee in different window sizes were tested on the VV, VH and VH/VV polarizations in the Sentinel-1A images, verifying the responses under the influence of the dry and post-rainy period in the Caatinga vegetation. In the state of Sergipe, Brazil, 30 samples of Caatinga fragments obtained from Sentinel-1A images for the dry and post-rainy season were selected. For all images evaluated, the values of the averages of the equivalent number of looks (ENL) were compared by the Tukey test at 5% significance. The Gamma filter showed the highest amount of means (22) with the highest ENL values, followed by Median (5). The generation of ENL results and their comparison, considering all variables used, was essential to serve as a basis for choosing the filtering method in studies that use data from Sentinel-1A in the Caatinga region. Resumo O Brasil tem uma vasta área territorial com várias tipologias florestais compostas por diferentes fisionomias. É necessário o mapeamento das áreas de florestas no país, com o intuito de se conhecer sua distribuição espacial, bem como de avaliar sua dinâmica de expansão ou redução. Uma forma eficiente e confiável de se obter tais informações se dá por meio de técnicas de sensoriamento remoto, podendo ser aplicado o imageamento por radar (micro-ondas), que por sua vez tem sido o foco de muitos pesquisadores. Sendo assim, o objetivo do presente estudo é reunir as produções científicas relacionadas à utilização de imagens de radar aplicadas ao mapeamento das diferentes florestas no Brasil, analisando as mais recentes abordagens e técnicas de classificação. Notou-se uma significativa aplicação de imagens SAR em florestas do bioma Amazônia, principalmente para a detecção do desmatamento. As imagens do sistema do radar de banda L do ALOS/PALSAR foram as mais utilizadas nos mapeamentos das tipologias florestais, associadas a vários algoritmos classificadores, tais como: Iterated Conditional Modes, Máxima Verossimilhança e random forest. Os tipos de dados trabalhados nas classificações variaram de acordo com a capacidade polarimétrica de cada imagem, com destaque à maior utilização dos coeficientes de retroespalhamento e atributos extraídos das decomposições de suas matrizes. Observou-se ainda que a maioria dos trabalhos relacionaram os dados SAR com os obtidos por sensores ópticos. Portanto, o presente estudo possibilitou reunir várias aplicações de técnicas de classificação para a discriminação de diferentes formações florestais no Brasil utilizando o imageamento por micro-ondas, indicando a potencialidade dos vários classificadores nos dados SAR, mostrando que os sistemas de radar são uma importante tecnologia utilizada para o mapeamento de florestas no país.

Abstract Brazil has a large territorial area with a large cover of vegetation and several forest typologies with different physiognomies. It is necessary to map the forest areas in the country in order to know the spatial distribution and the dynamics of each forest formation. An efficient and reliable way to obtain this information is using remote sensing techniques, and radar - SAR - imaging can be applied, which in turn has been the focus of many researchers. Thus, the objective of the present study is to gather scientific productions related to the use of radar images applied to the mapping of different forests in Brazil, analyzing the most recent approaches and classification techniques. There was a significant application of SAR images in forests of the Amazon biome, mainly for the detection of deforestation. The images of the ALOS/PALSAR L-band radar system were the most used in the mapping of forest typologies, associated to several classifier algorithms, such as: Iterated Conditional Modes, Maximum Likelihood and random forest. The data types worked in the classifications varied according to the polarimetric capacity of each image, with emphasis on the greater use of backscattering coefficients and attributes extracted from matrix decompositions. It was also observed that most studies related SAR data to those obtained by optical sensors. Therefore, the present study made it possible to gather several applications of classification techniques for the discrimination of forest formations in Brazil using microwave imaging, indicating the potentiality of the various classifiers with SAR images, and showing that radar systems are an important technology that is being used for mapping forests in the country.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the input of suspended sediment from the slope toe in the São Francisco River channel, in Northeast Brazil, under different soil bioengineering techniques. Sediments were collected in the years of 2013, 2014 and 2015, in five transects crossing the river channel. Sediment input in the sampling points was higher in the year of 2013, i.e., the year of the highest river discharge. Sediment supply to the river channel for a period of 3 years (2013, 2014 and 2015), was evaluated at 20, 40 and 60% depth, along five different transects (P1= riverbank, P2= beginning of the thalweg, P3= middle of the thalweg, P4= end of the thalweg, and P5 = margin of the side sandybar), oriented by the presence or absence of erosion control techniques (treatments) such as: 1-Natural Vegetated Slope; 2-Vegetated Riprap; 3-Eroded Slope; 4-Live Cribwall and 5-Vetiver grass Contour Line. Sediments input was different in all evaluated transects, and the one identified as Eroded Slope at 20% depth presented the lowest amount of suspended sediment load. There was a decrease in the total amount of suspended sediment in the evaluated periods, probably due to the progressive decrease in the river discharge, and the protection provided by the soil bioengineering techniques.

Resumen Este estudio evalúa la entrada de sedimentos en suspensión de la punta de la pendiente del cauce del río São Francisco, en el noreste de Brasil, bajo diferentes técnicas de bioingeniería de suelos. Los sedimentos se recolectaron en 2013, 2014 y 2015, en cinco transectos que cruzan el cauce del río. La entrada de sedimentos en los puntos de muestreo fue mayor en el año 2013, es decir, el año de la mayor descarga del río. El suministro de sedimentos al cauce del río por un período de 3 años (2013, 2014 y 2015), fue evaluado a 20, 40 y 60% de profundidad, a lo largo de cinco transectos diferentes (P1 = ribera, P2 = inicio del thalweg, P3 = medio del thalweg, P4 = final del thalweg, y P5 = margen de la barra arenosa lateral), orientados por la presencia o ausencia de técnicas de control de erosión (tratamientos) tales como: 1-Talud Vegetado Natural; Riprap de 2 vegetaciones; Pendiente 3-erosionada; 4-Live Cribwall y 5-Vetiver grass Contour Line. La entrada de sedimentos fue diferente en todos los transectos evaluados, y el identificado como Pendiente Erosionada al 20% de profundidad presentó la menor cantidad de carga de sedimentos en suspensión. Hubo una disminución en la cantidad total de sedimentos en suspensión en los períodos evaluados, probablemente debido a la disminución progresiva del caudal del río y la protección que brindan las técnicas de bioingeniería de suelos.

Resumo O Brasil tem extensas formações vegetais ao longo do seu território que são afetadas por ocorrências de queimadas, necessitando de um monitoramento espaço-temporal e de estudos que relacionem a sua atuação nos biomas e nas áreas protegidas do país. Sendo assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar o comportamento temporal e espacial das ocorrências de fogo de 2003 a 2017 nos biomas brasileiros: Amazônia, Caatinga, Cerrado, Mata Atlântica, Pantanal e Pampa, incluindo as incidências nas áreas de Unidades de Conservação, verificando possíveis padrões da distribuição dos focos, assim como a tendência estatística das suas ocorrências. Foram utilizados dados geoespaciais de 2003 a 2017 do satélite de referência AQUA_M-T obtido no Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais, e das Unidades de Conservação disponibilizados pelo Ministério do Meio Ambiente. Estatisticamente, foi aplicado o algoritmo Kernel para analisar a distribuição espacial a partir da média da série temporal estudada, e o teste não paramétrico de Mann-Kendall, considerando também a sua Persistência de Longo Alcance para verificar a tendência de ocorrência. Observou-se que os biomas Amazônia e Cerrado possuem, respectivamente, os maiores focos de fogo, com o Cerrado tendo maior área queimada. Consequentemente, as Unidades de Conservação localizadas nestes biomas tiveram maior quantidade de focos detectados. A análise da tendência estatística indicou que o crescimento da ocorrência de fogo possui sazonalidade em todos os biomas, com o Pampa sendo caracterizado por uma condição natural. Portanto, o estudo permitiu identificar e quantificar, espacialmente, os maiores focos de queimadas nos Biomas brasileiros, bem como nas Unidade de Conservação em cada respectivo bioma para a série estudada, servindo como base para medidas de prevenção e controle do fogo principalmente nas Unidades de Conservação que possuem maiores ocorrências no país.

Abstract Brazil has extensive plant formations throughout its territory that are affected by burning occurrences, necessitating space-time monitoring and studies that relate its performance to the biomes and protected areas of the country. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to analyze the temporal and spatial behavior of the occurrences of fires from 2003 to 2017 in the Brazilian biomes: Amazonia, Caatinga, Cerrado, Mata Atlântica, Pantanal and Pampa, including incidences in the areas of Conservation Units, possible patterns of distribution of forest fire outbreaks, as well as the statistical trend of its occurrence. Geospatial data were used from 2003 to 2017 of the AQUA_M-T reference satellite obtained from the National Space Research Institute and from the Conservation Units provided by the Ministry of the Environment. Statistically, the Kernel algorithm was applied to analyze the spatial distribution from the mean of the time series studied, and the non-parametric Mann-Kendall test, also considering its Long Range Persistence to verify the tendency of the occurrence. It was observed that the Amazon and Cerrado biomes have, respectively, the largest fires, with the Cerrado having a larger area burned. Consequently, the Conservation Units located in these biomes had a higher amount of fires. The tendency statistical analysis indicated that the growth of the occurrence of fire has seasonality in all the biomes, with the Pampa being characterized by a natural condition. Therefore, the study allowed to quantify and to identify, spatially, the largest fires in the Brazilian Biomes, as well as in the Conservation Units in each respective biome for the studied series, serving as a basis for fire prevention and control measures, mainly in which that have the highest occurrences in the country.

ABSTRACT The use of SAR images has been highlighted in scientific research focused on forest data collection worldwide. Thus, the present work aimed at gathering studies turned to the application of SAR images to obtain biophysical variables of forests in Brazil. Based on studies published in recognized databases, a growing amount of publications over time was observed with more focus on researches made mainly in Amazonian biome, followed by planted forests with eucalyptus destined to wood production. Most works were made based on airborne radar data, followed by ALOS/PALSAR and JERS-1 orbital data. It is remarkable the scientific knowledge produced using radar data from Brazilian forests, demonstrating that this technology is an other tool for studies and applications in Forestry Sciences that can assist in the country’s forestry management. Nevertheless, the need of studies on the several forest typologies across Brazil was evidenced, along with the lack of research related to radar use to estimate biophysical variables in caatinga and Atlantic Forest biomes.

RESUMO O estudo hidrológico das precipitações permite estimar, entre outras características, o tempo de recorrência de determinada chuva - a partir de bases históricas e cálculos probabilísticos -, que assume importância principalmente quando se trata de eventos extremos. Sendo assim, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi estimar a precipitação máxima diária provável para os períodos de retorno de 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 e 100 anos segundo a distribuição de Gumbel, com base no método dos momentos, e analisar a espacialização desses eventos para todo o estado da Bahia, Brasil. Para isso, utilizou-se a série histórica das 28 estações pluviométricas do Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET) de 1961 a 2015, aplicando o método de Gumbel por meio dos parâmetros obtidos das equações dos momentos, sendo os dados testados pelo método de Kolmogorov-Smirnov. Para a espacialização dos resultados, foi utilizado o ArcGIS 10.3 por intermédio da interpolação pela Ponderação do Inverso da Distância (IDW, na sigla em inglês) para cada tempo de retorno. As porções litorânea e central do estado têm maior predisposição à ocorrência de eventos extremos. O método dos momentos possibilitou estimar os parâmetros utilizados na equação de Gumbel, sendo possível espacializar e analisar as precipitações máximas para o estado estudado.

ABSTRACT The hydrological study of precipitations allows estimating, among other characteristics, the time of recurrence of a certain rainfall, from historical bases and probabilistic calculations, which is especially important when it comes to extreme events. Thus, the objective of the present work was to estimate the probable maximum daily precipitation for the return periods of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 years according to the Gumbel distribution, using the moments method, and to analyze the spatialization of these events for the entire state of Bahia, Brazil. The study used the historical series of the 28 rainfall stations of INMET from 1961 to 2015, applying the Gumbel method through the parameters obtained from the equations of the moments, being the data tested by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov method. For the spatialization of the results, ArcGIS 10.3 was used by means of Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) interpolation for each return time. The coastal and central portion of the state is more predisposed to the occurrence of extreme events. The moments methods allowed to estimate the parameters used in the Gumbel equation, making it possible to spatialize and analyze the maximum precipitations for the studied state.

RESUMO A técnica de semeadura direta vem se destacando nos projetos de recuperação florestal pela redução de custos na implantação e tem sido cada vez mais utilizada. Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar a emergência, sobrevivência e estabelecimento de espécies florestais nativas, por meio de sementes em áreas de mata ciliar no Rio Piauitinga, município de Lagarto, SE. As espécies utilizadas foram Libidibia ferrea var. leiostachya (Benth.) L. P. Queiroz, Cassia grandis L. f., Cecropia pachystachya Trec., Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong e Guazuma ulmifolia Lam. O experimento em campo foi implantado em Delineamento em Blocos Casualizados (DBC) com quatro repetições, em esquema fatorial, testando-se as cinco espécies com e sem tratamento para superação de dormência. A semeadura direta mostrou-se uma técnica viável para a área de estudo apenas para as espécies L. ferrea var. leiostachya, E. contortisiliquum e Cassia grandis, utilizando-se sementes com e sem dormência.

ABSTRACT The direct seeding technique stands out for forest restoration projects due to savings in deployment costs and has been increasingly used. This work was carried out with the objective of assessing emergence, survival and establishment of native forest species, by means of seeds, in riparian areas of Piauitinga River, in the municipality of Lagarto-SE. The species used were Libidibia ferrea var. leiostachya (Benth.) L.P.Queiroz., Cassia grandis L.F., Cecropia pachystachya Trec., Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong and Guazuma ulmifolia Lam. The field work was performed in a randomized block design (RBD) with four replications in factorial scheme, testing five species with and without treatment for overcoming of dormancy. It was observed that direct sowing is a viable technique for the area of study only for the species L. ferrea var. leiostachya, E. contortisiliquum and Cassia grandis, using seeds with and without dormancy.

RESUMO As Areas de Preservação Permanente (APPs) ao longo dos cursos d 'água são foco de diversos estudos, não só por sua fragilidade e relevância ecológica, mas pelo ineficaz cumprimento das legislações que a protegem. Uma das maiores dificuldades de garantir a efetiva conservação dessas áreas é a ausência de metodologias que possam delimitá-las rapidamente ao longo de rios sem seccionar manualmente as larguras do rio ou realizar talprocedimento de forma apenas linear para todo o rio. O objetivo do trabalho foi desenvolver um método de análise espacial para delimitar automaticamente a área de preservação permanente ao longo de um curso d 'água com a utilização de um Sistema de Informações Geográfica (SIG). O estudo foi realizado na bacia hidrográfica do rio Sergipe, rio que dá nome ao estado, tendo sido aplicada a metodologia aos seus principais rios e afluentes. Para o estudo foi utilizada a base de dados do Atlas Digital sobre Recursos Hídricos - SEMARH/SE, e a delimitação das APPs foi realizada por meio do ArcGIS 10.1 e da extensão XToolPro 9.0. Foi delimitado um total de 5.003,82 hectares de áreas de preservação permanente às margens dos rios analisados, com uma margem de erro inferior a 1% na delimitação da largura dos rios em toda a extensão mapeada pela metodologia desenvolvida. O método apresentado realizou o procedimento de delimitação das APPs de forma eficiente, com uma margem pequena de erro, se tornando um avanço tecnológico no que diz respeito à aplicação de SIGpara a gestão territorial.

ABSTRACT Permanent Preservation Areas (PPAs) along watercourses have been the focus of numerous studies, not only because of the fragility and ecological relevance of riverine vegetation, but also because of the inefficiency demonstrated in conforming to the legislation protecting it. One of the major difficulties encountered in terms of guaranteeing the effective conservation of these riverside areas is the absence of methodologies that can be used to define them rapidly and accurately without manually determining the widths of the rivers or assigning only uniform linear values for the entire watercourse. The present work sought to develop a spatial analysis methodology capable of automatically defining permanent preservation areas along watercourses using geographic information system (GIS) software. The present study was undertaken in the Sergipe River basin, "considering the river itself and its principal affluents. We used the database of the Digital Atlas of Hydrological Resources (SEMARH/SE), and the delimitations of the PPAs were performed using ArcGIS 10.1 and the XToolPro 9.0 extension. A total of 5,003.82 hectares of Permanent Preservation Areas were delimited along the margins of the rivers analyzed, with a margin of error of <1% in delimiting the widths of the rivers within the entire area considered. The methodology described here can be used to define PPAs efficiently, relatively rapidly, and with very small margins of error, thus representing a technological advance in terms of using GIS for land management.
