The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of piroxicam as an adjuntive treatment for squamous cell carcinoma in a horse. In September 2007, a 10-year-old Thoroughbred gelding weighing 555 kg was seen by private ophthalmologist for showing abundant mucoid secretion, conjunctival hyperemia and granulation tissue on the third eyelid of the left eye. The patient was initially treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. A biopsy of the granulation tissue on the third eyelid was taken. The laboratory reported a non tumoral epithelial hiperplasia. After ten days of treatment, the size of the tumor slightly decreased, but after two weeks the horse showed no further improvement, so surgical treatment was elected. The third eyelid of the left eye was excised completely and the tumor was submitted for histopathological examination. The laboratory reported a squamous cell carcinoma. Postsurgical treatment included topical antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, and piroxicam (80 mg PO SID). Ten months after surgery was performed, the horse showed no complications or signs of recurrence. Squamous cell carcinoma has been reported as the second most common tumor in horses. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are potent inhibitors of the cyclooxygenases (COX). It has been demonstrated that COX-2 is overexpressed in several epithelial tumors; therefore, inhibitors of COX-2 can induce apoptosis of tumor cells and inhibit angiogenesis.

El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar el uso del piroxicam como tratamiento adjunto en un caso de carcinoma de células escamosas en un caballo. En septiembre de 2007, un caballo, macho castrado, raza Pura Sangre Inglés, de diez años de edad y 555 kg de peso fue referido a un oftalmólogo privado por presentar secreción mucoide abundante, hiperemia conjuntival y tejido granulomatoso en el tercer párpado del ojo izquierdo. Se inició tratamiento médico con antibiótico y antiinflamatorio, y se tomó biopsia del tejido granulomatoso presente en el tercer párpado. El resultado fue hiperplasia epitelial no tumoral. En una nueva evaluación (después de diez días), se observó ligera disminución del tejido. Después de dos semanas de tratamiento, sin mejoría se decidió extirpar el tercer párpado en su totalidad. En consecuencia, el tercer párpado del ojo izquierdo fue completamente extirpado para su análisis histopatológico, el cual confirmó carcinoma de células escamosas. Como tratamiento posquirúrgico además de antibiótico y antiinflamatorio tópico se prescribió piroxicam a dosis de 80 mg totales SID PO. Diez meses después de la cirugía, el caballo se encuentra bien y sin recidiva del tumor. El carcinoma de células escamosas es el segundo tumor más común en caballos. Los antiinflamatorios no esteroidales son potentes inhibidores de la ciclooxigenasa (COX). Se ha demostrado que la COX-2 se encuentra sobreexpresada en tumores epiteliales; por tanto, sus inhibidores probablemente inducen la apoptosis de las células tumorales e inhiben la angiogénesis.

Foram utilizados 40 ratos Wistar, machos, com peso inicial médio de 225 gramas, separados em dois grupos. Após serem anestesiados com éter, foi induzida uma ferida limpa na região torácica dorsal cranial, mediante a utilização de molde metálico de 2,0 x 1,5cm. No grupo I, foi utilizada pomada contendo óleo de fígado de bacalhau, extrato de confrei, extrato cítrico, óxido de zinco e veículo (Creamex®); no grupo II, a ferida foi apenas limpa com solução salina isotônica. Para a avaliação histológica, foram submetidos à eutanásia cinco animais de cada grupo no 3º, 7º, 14º e 21º dia de pós-operatório. O grupo tratado com a pomada orgânica apresentou padrão cicatricial de qualidade superior em relação ao grupo tratado com salina isotônica, representado por formação de fibras colágenas, neoformação de vasos e reepitelização completa da epiderme.

Forty male Wistar rats, with average weight of 225 grams, were divided into two experimental groups. A clean wound was induced in the dorsal thoracic region using a 2.0 x 1.5cm metallic mould after ether general anesthesia. In the group An ointment containing cod liver oil, comfrey extract, citrus extract, zinc oxide and carrier were used, and in the group II the wound was only cleaned by the use of isotonic saline. Five animals from each group were submitted to euthanasia at 3,7,14 and 21 postoperative days for histological examination. The group using organic ointment showed superior healing pattern when compared to the group using isotonic saline, represented by collagen fiber formation, vessel ingrowth and total reepithelialization of the epidermis.

Foi testada a resistência mecânica à compressão em 30 hemimandíbulas coletadas de cadáveres caninos. Dez. hemimandíbulas foram mantidas íntegras (grupo 1 = controle). As outras 20 foram submetidas inicialmente a fraturas oblíquas simples, entre o segundo e terceiro pré-molares e, posteriormente, imobilizadas por meio do emprego de resina acrílica aplicada diretamente sobre as superfícies dentárias em conjunto com o fio metálico interdental (grupo 2) ou interfragmentar (grupo 3). A análise estatística mostrou diferença significativa entre os grupos (Gl>G2>G3). Foi possível concluir que o método empregado no grupo 2, além de ser menos invasivo e não ter o perigo de danificar as raízes dentárias, é mecanicamente mais resistente do que o utilizado no grupo 3.

Strength to compression of 30 hemimandibles obtained from canine cadavers was tested. Ten intact hemimandibles were used as controls (group 1). The other twenty hemimandibles were submitted to simple oblique fractures between the second and third premolars. The hemimandibles were fixed with acrylic resin applied to the tooth crown surface combined with interdental wire (group 2) or interfragmentary wire (group 3). The method used in hemimandibles of group 2 was more resistam than that used in the group 3. Besides that it was less invasive and did not damage the tooth roots.
