Neste artigo, analisamos os resultados de “tiebreak” de alguns tenistas com o objetivo de investigar se é possível identificarmos uma distribuição não aleatória dos pontos nesse momento crucial do jogo. Nós comparamos os resultados observados com uma distribuição binomial considerando que as probabilidades de ganhar ou perder um ponto são iguais. Usando um teste χ2 percebemos que, com exceção de alguns tenistas, a maior parte dos resultados está de acordo com nossa hipótese de que os pontos em “tiebreaks” são apenas aleatórios.

In this paper we analyse tiebreak results from some tennis players in order to investigate whether we are able to identify a non-aleatory distribution of the points in this crucial moment of the game. We compared the observed results with a binomial distribution considering that the probabilities of winning or losing a point are equal. Using a χ2 test we found that, excepting some players, the greatest part of the results agrees with our hypothesis that the points in tiebreaks are merely aleatory.

We report the measurement of Doppler broadening annihilation radiation in silicon, using 22Na as a positron source, and two Ge detectors arrangement. The two-dimensional coincidence energy spectrum was fitted using a model function. The model function included at rest positron annihilation with valence band, 2p, 2s, and 1s electrons. In-flight positron annihilation was also fitted. The detectors response functions included backscattering, and a combination of Compton effects, pileup, ballistic deficit, and pulse shaping problems. The obtained results agree well with the literature.

Positron annihilation radiation profi le in aluminum was observed with a pair of Ge detectors in coincidence. 22Na was used as a source of positron and the two-dimensional gamma energy spectrum wasfi tted using a model function. Annihilation components of positron at rest with conduction band, 1s, 2s, and 2p electrons were observed. The in-flight positron annihilation was also observed. The model function also took into account the detector response function, relative effi ciency corrections and the gamma backscattering. Coincidences involving a combination of Compton effect, pileup, ballistic defi cit, and pulse shaping problems were treated as well.

This paper presents a one step self-calibration procedure, based on the least squares method, to be used in gamma-ray energy measurements. The obtained equation allows a qualitative interpretation of the information provided by an experiment.

This paper discusses some aspects of deconvolution of one-dimensional spectra in the framework of the Least Squares Method and presents a minimum variance regularization procedure. Covariance matrices are taken into account inevery step. Fluctuation and artifacts, both in the deconvolved and regularized spectra, are related to the structure of the covariance matrices. The method is applied to a simulated spectrum and to the 34S (gamma, <img src="http:/img/fbpe/bjp/v31n1/02eq05.gif">n) cross section determination from actual yield data.
