Abstract Introduction Central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) has been diagnosed through behavioral tests. Moreover, screening tools as validated questionnaires may contribute to identify individuals at risk for this disorder, including adolescents. Objective (1) to characterize and compare adolescents’ self-perception regarding their auditory behavior with their parents’ perception; (2) to verify their agreement with behavioral evaluation of central auditory processing (CAP). Methods Cross-sectional, prospective, and descriptive study, in which 40 adolescents and 40 parents of both genders participated. All participants answered the scale of auditory behaviors questionnaire, and the behavioral evaluation of CAP was conducted with the adolescents. Findings were analyzed descriptively and inferentially, with a significance level of 5% (p ≤ 0.05) and application of the following tests: Test for equality of two proportions, Chi-squared, and Kappa concordance index. Results Most adolescents rated their auditory behavior as “low risk” for CAPD while their parents rated it as “typical.” When comparing adolescents’ self-perception and parents’ perception about the auditory behavior with the behavioral evaluation outcome, a statistically significant difference was observed only in adolescents’ selfperception. The results of the behavioral evaluation indicated that 42.5% of the adolescents showed alterations. The concordance index between adolescents’ selfperception and parents’ perception of auditory behavior showed a significant (minimal) difference. Conclusion Most adolescents were able to perceive difficulties regarding their auditory behavior and characterized it as “low risk” for CAPD, but the same did not occur regarding their parents. There was agreement only between the adolescents’ self-perception and their performance in the behavioral evaluation of CAP.

RESUMO Objetivo: 1) verificar os efeitos da intervenção de um programa de treinamento auditivo informal para estimulação das habilidades auditivas de localização sonora e de memória sequencial de sons verbais e não verbais, no ambiente escolar, em um grupo de pré-escolares; 2) investigar a influência das variáveis sexo e idade no resultado da avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo (teste e reteste). Métodos: estudo prospectivo, analítico e intervencional, desenvolvido em uma Escola Municipal de Educação Infantil. Participaram 51 pré-escolares do sexo masculino e feminino, entre 4 e 6 anos. Para avaliar os efeitos da intervenção do programa de treinamento auditivo informal foram realizados os procedimentos, pré e pós-intervenção: meatoscopia, timpanometria e avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo central. Foram aplicados os testes estatísticos propriados adotando-se o nível de significância menor que 0,05. Resultados: a comparação do desempenho dos pré-escolares no teste e reteste, evidenciou uma melhora significante em todas as habilidades auditivas avaliadas. Os pré-escolares apresentaram melhor desempenho na habilidade de localização sonora e pior desempenho para a memória sequencial de sons não verbais, em ambos teste e reteste. Conclusão: nesta população, o programa de treinamento auditivo informal se mostrou efetivo e a variável idade influenciou o resultado da avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo.

ABSTRACT Purpose: 1) to verify the intervention effects of an informal auditory training program to stimulate auditory abilities for sound localization and sequential memory for verbal and non-verbal sounds, at school environment in a group of preschoolers; 2) to investigate the influence of the gender and age variables on the result of the Simplified Auditory Processing Test (test and retest). Methods: a prospective, analytical and intervention study developed at a Municipal School of Early Childhood Education. Fifty-one preschool children of both genders, aged between 4 and 6 years, participated in this study. To evaluate the intervention effects of the informal auditory training program, pre-and post-intervention procedures were performed, that is: meatoscopy, tympanometry and Simplified Auditory Processing Test. Appropriate statistical tests were applied, by adopting the 5% (0.05) significance level. Results: the comparison of the preschoolers’ performance on the test and retest showed a significant improvement in all auditory abilities assessed. Preschoolers showed a better performance in sound localization ability and a worse performance for sequential memory of nonverbal sounds ability, for both test and retest. Conclusion: in this population, the informal auditory training program showed to be effective and the age variable influenced the result of the Simplified Auditory Processing Test.

RESUMO Objetivo: Validar o conteúdo de um instrumento para mensuração do esforço auditivo para indivíduos com perda auditiva. Método: Trata-se de um estudo de validação, desenvolvido em duas fases, sendo a fase 1 o planejamento e desenvolvimento da primeira versão do instrumento e a fase 2 a investigação das evidências de validade baseadas no conteúdo do instrumento e desenvolvimento da versão final para mensuração de esforço auditivo. Participaram dez profissionais com expertise na área audiológica, com mais de cinco anos de experiência. O instrumento a ser validado foi composto por três partes: I - “percepção de fala de logatomas e esforço auditivo”; II - “esforço auditivo e memória operacional”; e III - “percepção de sentenças sem sentido e memória operacional”, apresentadas de forma monoaural no silêncio e nas relações sinal-ruído +5dB, 0dB e -5dB. Foi realizada a análise descritiva das sugestões do comitê de fonoaudiólogos e do índice de validade de conteúdo individual e total. Resultados: Os resultados mostraram que as partes I e III do instrumento proposto atingiram o índice de validade de conteúdo total acima de 0,78, ou seja, os itens apresentados não necessitaram de modificações em seu constructo. Conclusão: As evidências de validade estudadas permitiram relevantes modificações e tornaram esse instrumento adequado ao seu constructo.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To validate the content of an instrument to measure listening effort for hearing-impaired individuals. Method: This is a validation study, developed in two stages, which the Stage 1 is the planning and development of the first version of the instrument, and Stage 2 the investigation of the evidences of validity based on the content and development of the final version of the instrument to measure listening effort. Ten professionals with expertise in the field of audiology, with more than five years of clinical experience participated in this study. The instrument to be validated was composed of three parts: I - “speech perception of logatomes and listening effort”; II - “listening effort and working memory” and; III - “speech perception of meaningless sentences and working memory” and they were presented monoaurally, in quiet and in the signal-to-noise ratios + 5dB, 0dB and -5dB. It was conducted a descriptive analysis regarding the suggestions of the committee judge audiologists and the analysis of the individual and scale content validity index. Results: The results showed that parts I and III which constitute the proposed instrument reached a scale content validity index above 0.78, which means that the presented items did not need modification in their construct. Conclusion: The evidences of validity studied allowed relevant modifications and made this instrument adequate to its construct.

RESUMO Objetivo Mensurar o esforço auditivo com o uso de um paradigma de tarefa dupla de memória operacional e analisar a significância clínica do desempenho de indivíduos normo-ouvintes. Método Participaram 10 adultos jovens, entre 18 e 30 anos, de ambos os gêneros, normo-ouvintes classificados segundo a média quadritonal (500, 1000, 2000 e 4000Hz) e com nível sociocultural similar. Os participantes foram submetidos à anamnese audiológica, meatoscopia e audiometria tonal limiar. Para a mensuração do esforço auditivo, utilizou-se um paradigma de tarefa dupla, composto por tarefas de percepção de fala e memória operacional de logatomas, palavras reais e sentenças sem sentido. Anteriormente à mensuração, o paradigma de tarefa dupla foi realizado no silêncio com o intuito de treinar os participantes a desempenharem as tarefas adequadamente. Após a fase de treinamento, este paradigma foi realizado em duas situações de escuta distintas, nas relações sinal/ruído de +5 e -5dB, com o ruído do tipo White Noise. Resultados A comparação do desempenho por orelha, direita ou esquerda, nas duas relações sinal-ruído demonstrou efeito significante para as tarefas de percepção de fala de logatomas e sentenças sem sentido em ambas as orelhas, porém para a tarefa de esforço auditivo e memória operacional houve diferença significante apenas para a orelha direita. Conclusão Foi possível mensurar o esforço auditivo com o uso do paradigma proposto e este instrumento demonstrou ser sensível para a quantificação deste parâmetro auditivo.

ABSTRACT Purpose To measure listening effort using of a dual-task paradigm of working memory and analyze the clinical significance of the normal-hearing individuals’ performance. Methods Participants were 10 young adults with similar socio-cultural level, aged 18-30 years, of both genders, classified as normal-hearing individuals based on the quadritonal average (500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz). The participants were submitted to audiological anamnesis, meatoscopy, and pure tone audiometry. Listening effort was measured using a dual-task paradigm comprising the tasks of speech perception and working memory with logatomes, real words, and meaningless sentences. Prior to measurement, the dual-task paradigm was carried out in audiometric booth in order to train the participants to perform the tasks properly. After the training stage, this paradigm was conducted under two different hearing situations with white noise: signal-to-noise ratios of +5 and -5dB. Results Performance comparison per ear, right or left, for the two signal-to-noise ratios significantly influenced the speech perception tasks with logatomes and meaningless sentences in both ears; however, significant difference was observed only for the right ear in the tasks of listening effort and working memory. Conclusion Listening effort can be measured using the paradigm proposed, and this instrument was proven sensitive for the quantification of this auditory parameter.

RESUMO Objetivo: revisar a literatura nacional e internacional e descrever os métodos usados para a coleta das medidas psicoacústicas do zumbido. Métodos: essa revisão integrativa foi realizada por meio da busca de artigos em periódicos especializados, nacionais e internacionais, nos idiomas português e inglês, disponíveis nas bases de dados: PubMed/Medline, BVS - LILACS e SCIELO. As palavras-chaves e descritores utilizados foram: audição, zumbido, medidas psicoacústicas, acufenometria e avaliação e, seus correspondentes em inglês. Os artigos levantados foram lidos e selecionados para a revisão seguindo os critérios de elegibilidade: aqueles que empregaram medidas psicoacústicas do zumbido e com descrição metodológica detalhada do protocolo empregado, em indivíduos normo-ouvintes e com perda auditiva. Resultados: foram revisados 12 artigos nos quais as medidas psicoacústicas foram empregadas para a caracterização e mensuração do zumbido, em indivíduos normo-ouvintes e com perda auditiva. Os principais achados referem-se à caracterização da amostra e modo de realização das medidas psicoacústicas. Conclusão: o agrupamento de diversos protocolos para avaliação do zumbido, realizado a partir da revisão integrativa de literatura, evidenciou grande heterogenidade dos métodos de realização das medidas psicoacústicas para a mensuração do zumbido para fins clínicos e científicos.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to review both the national and international literature as well as to describe the methods used to collect psychoacoustic measurements in tinnitus patients. Methods: the current integrative review was conducted on articles in specialized national and international journals, in both the Portuguese and English languages, available in the PubMed/Medline, BVS - LILACS and SCIELO databases. The following keywords and descriptors were used: hearing, tinnitus, psychoacoustic measurements, acuphenometry, and assessment, in both the Portuguese and English languages. The retrieved articles were read and selected for the review according to the eligibility criteria, which included the use of psychoacoustic measurements in tinnitus patients and the presence of a detailed methodological description of the protocol employed, in individuals with normal hearing and those with hearing loss. Results: a total of 12 articles, in which psychoacoustic measures were used for the characterization and the measurement of tinnitus in individuals with normal hearing and in those with hearing loss, were reviewed. The main findings were associated with the sample characterization and the way in which the psychoacoustic measures were performed. Conclusion:given the grouping of several protocols for tinnitus evaluation, which were determined following an integrative literature review, a great heterogeneity in the methods used to perform psychoacoustic measurements for tinnitus assessment for both clinical and scientific purposes was noted.

RESUMO Objetivo: caracterizar o desempenho de adolescentes brasileiros no Teste de Padrão de Frequência e, comparar os resultados com os valores normativos da Auditec®. Métodos: 26 adolescentes matriculados no ensino fundamental ou médio, de ambos os sexos, e com idade entre 12 e 18 anos participaram do estudo. Adotaram-se como critérios de inclusão: a) sem alterações na inspeção visual do meato acústico externo; b) limiares audiométricos dentro dos padrões de normalidade em ambas as orelhas, ou seja, valores iguais ou inferiores a 25dBNA; c) curva timpanométrica do tipo “A” bilateral, d) presença de reflexo acústico, modo contralateral, nas frequências de 500, 1000 e 2000Hz, em ambas orelhas, comportamento auditivo típico de acordo com o questionário Scale of Auditory Behaviors(SAB) (pontuação igual ou superior a 46 pontos). Para os adolescentes que atenderam ao critério de inclusão foi aplicado o Teste de Padrão de Frequência (versão Auditec®), de forma binaural, em 50dBNS. Os achados foram analisados de forma descritiva e inferencial. Resultados: a análise estatística demonstrou significância somente para a comparação do valor da média de 88,10%, resultado obtido no Teste de Padrão de Frequência desempenhado pelos brasileiros, quando este é comparado com o valor normativo (com inversões) sugerido pela Auditec®, no qual a média é de 96%. Conclusão: os achados deste estudo demonstraram que os valores obtidos no Teste de Padrão de Frequência, versão Auditec®, na população brasileira foram semelhantes aos valores apresentados pela literatura internacional.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to characterize the performance of Brazilian adolescents in the Pitch Pattern Sequence (PPS) test and compare the results with Auditec® normative values. Methods: 26 adolescents enrolled in elementary or secondary education, of both sexes, and between 12 and 18 years, participated in the study. The inclusion criteria adopted were: a) no alterations in the visual inspection of the external acoustic meatus; b) hearing thresholds within the normal range for both ears, that is, values equal to or lower than 25dBHL; c) bilateral type “A” tympanometric curve, d) presence of acoustic reflex, contralateral mode, in the frequencies of 500, 1000 and 2000Hz, in both ears, typical auditory behavior according to the Scale of Auditory Behaviors (SAB) or greater than 46 points. For adolescents, who met the inclusion criteria, the PPS (Auditec® version) was applied, binaurally, at 50dBSL. The findings were analyzed in a descriptive and inferential manner. Results: statistical analysis showed significance only for the comparison of the mean value of 88.10%, a result obtained in the PPS performed by Brazilians, when compared to the normative value (included) suggested by Auditec®, in which the mean was 96%. Conclusion: the findings of this study demonstrated that the values obtained in the PPS, Auditec® version, in the Brazilian population, were similar to those presented in the international literature.

RESUMO Objetivo: revisar a literatura sobre os métodos comportamentais de avaliação do esforço auditivo e a capacidade de memória operacional recomendados para deficientes auditivos. Métodos: foi desenvolvida por meio da busca de artigos em periódicos nacionais e internacionais, em inglês e português, disponíveis na Pubmed/Medline, biblioteca Cochrane, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde - Literatura Latino Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde e Scientific Electronic Library Online, entre 2007 e 2017. Os artigos foram selecionados a partir do cumprimento dos critérios de inclusão: artigos que empregassem métodos comportamentais, para a avaliação do esforço auditivo em adultos deficientes auditivos, que envolvesse a mensuração da memória operacional e sua relação com o esforço auditivo, publicados nos últimos 10 anos. Resultados: foram revisados 12 artigos no qual as medidas comportamentais foram empregadas para a mensuração do esforço auditivo e da capacidade de memória operacional em deficientes auditivos. Os principais achados dos artigos revisados se referem ao objetivo(s) da pesquisa, participantes, método comportamental empregado constituído por uma tarefa primária (percepção de fala) e uma tarefa secundária (memorização) e, resultados. Conclusão: os achados permitem inferir que este paradigma é sensível para mensurar o esforço auditivo, considerando os diferentes instrumentos empregados e população avaliada.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to review the literature on the behavioral methods of listening effort assessment and the working memory capacity recommended for the hearing impaired. Methods: this review was developed through the search of articles in national and international journals, in English and Portuguese, available in Pubmed/Medline, Cochrane Library, Biblioteca Vitual em Saúde - Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS) and Scientific Electronic Library Online, between 2007 and 2017. The articles were selected based on the inclusion criteria: articles that used behavioral methods to assess listening effort in hearing-impaired adults, involving the measurement of working memory and its relationship with the listening effort, published in the last 10 years. Results: Twelve articles in which behavioral measures were used to measure listening effort and working memory capacity in the hearing-impaired individuals were reviewed. Their main findings refer to the purpose(s) of the research, participants, behavioral method composed of a primary task (speech perception) and a secondary task (memorization) and results of the studies. Conclusion:the findings of this review allow us to infer that this paradigm is sensitive to measure the listening effort, considering the different instruments used and the population assessed.

RESUMO Objetivo: revisar a literatura científica e apresentar os instrumentos e métodos existentes para a avaliação objetiva do esforço auditivo em indivíduos normo-ouvintes no cenário mundial. Métodos: esta foi uma revisão integrativa de literatura cujo intuito foi reunir e resumir o conhecimento científico a respeito da temática métodos objetivos para mensuração do esforço auditivo, desenvolvida por meio da busca de artigos em periódicos especializados, nacionais e internacionais, nos idiomas inglês e português, disponíveis nas bases de dados: PUBMED, Biblioteca Cochrane, LILACS e SCIELO. Resultados: foram revisados 18 artigos nos quais os métodos fisiológicos foram empregados para mensurar o esforço auditivo em indivíduos normo-ouvintes. Os principais achados dos artigos revisados se referem aos autore(s) e objetivo(s) da pesquisa, país onde a pesquisa foi conduzida, casuística, método fisiológico empregado e, resultados. Conclusão: não existe consenso entre os pesquisadores quanto ao melhor método fisiológico para mensurar este parâmetro, ou seja, este esforço nas tarefas de percepção de fala, embora o nível de condutância da pele tenha sido considerado a medida mais precisa até o momento.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to review the scientific literature and present existing instruments and methods for the objective assessment of the listening effort in normal hearing individuals worldwide. Methods: a literature integrative review whose purpose was to gather and summarize the scientific knowledge regarding the objective methods theme for measuring the listening effort, developed through the search of articles in specialized national and international journals, in the English and Portuguese languages, available in the databases: PUBMED, Cochrane Library, LILACS and SCIELO. Results: 18 articles which used physiological methods to measure the listening effort in individuals with normal hearing were reviewed. The main findings described in those articles refer to the author(s) and purpose(s) of the research, country where the research was conducted, casuistry, physiological method used and results. Conclusion: there is no consensus among the researchers about the best physiological method to measure this parameter, that is, this effort in the speech perception tasks, although the level of skin conductance is considered the most accurate measure to date.

RESUMO Objetivo: analisar os comportamentos auditivos e de comunicação oral em um grupo de crianças e adolescentes usuários de implante coclear e estabelecer relações com fatores que interferem na reabilitação auditiva. Métodos: participaram deste estudo 13 crianças ou adolescentes com deficiência auditiva sensorioneural profunda bilateral. Foram aplicados procedimentos padronizados para verificar: o comportamento auditivo e de comunicação oral dos participantes e estabelecidas relações com a idade da criança no período do diagnóstico; o intervalo entre o diagnóstico e a intervenção, época de ativação do implante coclear; a idade auditiva e o período de reabilitação auditiva. Resultados: foram encontrados dados estatisticamente significantes ao correlacionar o intervalo entre o diagnóstico e a intervenção com os escores dos procedimentos de avaliação da comunicação oral. Conclusão: houve impacto significante no desenvolvimento da comunicação oral quando analisado o período transcorrido entre o diagnóstico e a intervenção, de tal forma que quanto mais rápida a intervenção, melhores os resultados. Foi evidente também que quanto mais precoce o início da utilização do implante coclear, maior idade auditiva e maior o período de reabilitação, melhores foram os escores nos procedimentos que avaliaram desenvolvimento auditivo e verbal.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze auditory and oral communication behaviors in a group of children and adolescents, users of cochlear implants and to establish a relationship with factors that interfere with aural rehabilitation. Methods: participants were 13 children or adolescents with profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Standardized procedures were applied to check: the auditory and oral communication behaviors of participants and their relationships with the child's age at diagnosis period; the interval between diagnosis and intervention, adaptation onset of the cochlear implant; the hearing age and aural rehabilitation period. Results: statistically significant data were found to correlate the interval between diagnosis and intervention with the scores in the evaluation procedures of oral communication. Conclusion: there was a significant impact on the development of oral communication when the period elapsed between the diagnosis and intervention was analyzed, in such way that the faster the intervention time, the better the results. It was also evident that the earlier the beginning of the use of cochlear implants, the greater the hearing age, and the longer the rehabilitation period, the better the scores in the procedures that evaluated auditory and verbal development.

RESUMO Objetivo: caracterizar a interação comunicativa entre pais ouvintes e crianças ou adolescentes com deficiência auditiva que utilizam comunicação oral, por meio da análise de filmagens. Métodos: participaram deste estudo os pais de nove crianças e nove adolescentes com deficiência auditiva sensorioneural bilateral, pré-lingual de grau moderado a profundo, que frequentam ou frequentaram um programa de intervenção fonoaudiológica, com ênfase no desenvolvimento da função auditiva e comunicação oral. Entre as nove crianças, quatro fazem uso de implante coclear e cinco de Aparelho de Amplificação Sonora Individual. Em relação aos adolescentes, seis fazem uso de implante coclear e três de Aparelho de Amplificação Sonora Individual. O procedimento adotado foi a Escala de Índice de Comportamentos que promovem a Comunicação, a qual apresenta 22 comportamentos que analisam a interação quanto à estimulação da audição e linguagem. Os referidos comportamentos foram pontuados a partir de uma escala Likert e classificados como "raramente", "ocorre" e "frequentemente". A interação entre os deficientes auditivos e seus pais foi filmada para posterior análise de três juízes com experiência na área de audiologia educacional. Resultados: foram realizadas 18 filmagens da interação, nas quais foi possível estabelecer uma concordância entre os juízes de 97,8%. Foi estatisticamente significante a ocorrência do comportamento "frequentemente". Conclusão: os resultados demonstraram que os pais, inseridos em um programa de reabilitação auditiva onde se enfatiza o uso de estratégias que favorecem o desenvolvimento de habilidades linguísticas e auditivas, empregam adequadamente comportamentos comunicativos na interação com seus filhos, em uma situação controlada.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to characterize the communicative interaction among hearing parents and children or adolescents with hearing loss who use oral communication through the video analysis. Methods: this study included parents of nine children and nine adolescents with bilateral sensorineural pre-lingual hearing impairment, from moderate to profound degree, who attend or attended an aural rehabilitation program with emphasis on the development of hearing and oral communication. Among the nine children, four are aided by cochlear implant and five are aided by hearing aid. Regarding the adolescents, six are aided by cochlear implant and three are aided by hearing aids. The procedure used was a checklist composed by 22 behaviors that analyze the interaction on the stimulation of hearing and language. These behaviors were scored from a Likert scale and classified as "rarely", "occasionally" and "frequently". The interaction among the hearing impaired children or adolescents and their parents was recorded for later analysis by three judges with experience in aural rehabilitation. Results: there were 18 interactions recorded, in which it was possible to establish a relation of 97.8% among the judges. The occurrence of behavior "frequently" was statistically significant. Conclusion: the results showed that parents involved into an aural rehabilitation program that emphasizes the use of communication strategies to improve the development of linguistic and auditory skills, suitably use communicative behaviors during interaction with their children or adolescents in a controlled situation.
