ABSTRACT Soil fertility evaluation is important for adopting conservation management and adequate nutrient supply. The objective of this study was to identify critical levels and soil fertility classes using the boundary line method for rainfed crops (corn, cowpea and sabiá [Mimosa caesalpiniifolia]) in the Brazilian semi-arid region. A database of 226 soil fertility analyses of samples from the 0.00-0.20 m soil layer, and corn, cowpea and sabiá yields from Ceará State was used to generate interpretation classes (at 80 and 95 % of maximum yield). In a scatter plot, soil nutrient concentrations (x-axis) and relative crop yields (y-axis) were correlated, and the border points fitted to a quadratic model. Proposed interpretation classes were classified as very low, low, adequate, high and very high, except for Na+, whose adequate class was considered tolerable. Generated models showed coefficients of determination (R2) for the chemical properties ranging from 0.54 to 0.92. Based on the interpretation classes, the critical level was determined as 6.3 for pH, 10.8 g dm-3 for OM, 20.9 mg dm-3 for P, 81 mg dm-3 for K, 55 mmolc dm-3 for Ca2+, 24 mmolc dm-3 for Mg2+ and 8 mg dm-3 for S-SO42-. Interpretation classes for soils with high-activity clay in the Brazilian semi-arid region were superior to those in the reference literature. RESUMO O objetivo foi avaliar o desempenho produtivo e a exportação de nutrientes do consórcio de milho com gramíneas forrageiras tolerantes ao estresse hídrico. O experimento foi delineado em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2x2x2+1 (duas espécies de gramíneas forrageiras – Massai e Buffel; dois métodos de semeadura – no sulco e a lanço; e duas épocas de semeadura – antecipada e simultânea; e monocultivo de milho como um controle adicional), com três repetições. O consórcio milho+forragem promoveu maior competição por recursos, principalmente água, limitando a absorção de N, síntese de clorofila e produção de biomassa pelo milho para condições semiáridas. A semeadura precoce deu vantagem competitiva às plantas forrageiras, favorecendo seu estabelecimento antes ou imediatamente após a semeadura do milho. ABSTRACT The aim was to evaluate the productive performance and nutrient export of maize intercropped with drought-tolerant forage grasses. The experimental design was a randomized blocks in a 2x2x2+1 factorial scheme (two forage grasses species – Massai and Buffel; two forage sowing methods - in the furrow and broadcast; and two forage sowing times - anticipated and simultaneous; and monoculture maize as an additional control), with three replicates. The maize+forage intercropping promoted greater competition for resources, especially water, limiting N uptake, chlorophyll synthesis, and biomass production by maize under semiarid conditions. Early sowing gave forage plants a competitive advantage, favoring forage establishment before or immediately after the sowing of maize. Thus, the simultaneous sowing of forage grasses in a semiarid environment is a more appropriate option considering the importance of high levels of chlorophyll to ensure high photosynthetic activity in maize plants and greater capacity of biomass synthesis. Massai intercropped with maize exhibits a greaterpotential for biomass production than Buffel under semiarid conditions. RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as características químicas de um processo contínuo de compostagem aeróbia com aeração passiva com material de alimentação proveniente da produção e abate de pequenos ruminantes, realizado com diferentes níveis de umidade. O processo de compostagem foi realizado em celas de tijolos, com resíduos sólidos (esterco e partes de carcaça) do abate de cabras e ovelhas, juntamente com capim-elefante seco picado e aparas de árvores. Os tratamentos empregaram três teores de umidade nas pilhas (30, 50 e 70%) e intervalos de tempo (0, 30, 60 e 120 dias) de avaliação do material compostado, com três repetições. As variáveis avaliadas foram os atributos químicos do composto gerado. O processo de compostagem aumentou as concentrações dos elementos Ca, Mg, S, Cu, Fe, Mn e Zn e reduziu o pH, o teor de lignina e a razão lignina/nitrogênio. O N, P e B apresentaram maior teor com 111, 61 e 94 dias, respectivamente. O K não teve sua concentração alterada. O teor de água de 70% produziu os maiores teores de N e menor razão lignina/N. Ao final do processo de compostagem, em 120 dias, houve aumento dos teores de N, P, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn e condutividade elétrica em 33,7; 6,3; 17,5; 16,3; 666; 22; 31,3; 49,7; 30,4: 29,4 e 16,1%, respectivamente. E houve decréscimo nos valores de pH e lignina em 8,4 e 27,2%, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to assess the chemical characteristics of a continuous aerobic composting process with passive aeration of feed material from the production and slaughter of small ruminants at different moisture levels. The composting process was performed in a brick barn with solid residues (manure and carcass parts) from the slaughter of goats and sheep along with chopped dry elephant grass and tree trimmings. The treatments employed three moisture contents (30, 50, and 70% water) and four sample collections at timed intervals (0, 30, 60, and 120 days), with three repetitions. The variables evaluated were the chemical attributes of the generated compost. The compositing process increased the concentrations of the elements Ca, Mg, S, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn and reduced the pH, lignin, and lignin/nitrogen ratio. The levels of N, P, and B increased up to 111, 61, and 94 days, respectively, whereas no change in the K content occurred. At the end of the process at 120 days, the contents of N, P, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, and electrical conductivity were increased by 33.7, 6.3, 17.5, 16.3, 666, 22, 31.3, 49.7, 30.4, 29.4 and 16.1%, respectively. The pH and lignin values decreased by 8.4 and 27.2%, respectively.

ABSTRACT The application of organic composts derived from animal husbandry or agro-industry is a promising option to improve nutrient cycling and supply of soils and, consequently, forage production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the soil chemical properties and the nutritional state of elephant grass in response to rates of organic fertilizer composted from the waste of small ruminant production and slaughter systems. The experiment was conducted on a Fluvisol of a forage field with elephant grass var. Cameroon, and was arranged in a randomized block design with split-plots with repeated measures over time. Six rates of organic compost (0, 13.3, 26.6, 39.9, 52.3, and 79.8 t ha-1, in plots) and an additional treatment with mineral fertilizers were evaluated in four growth periods (60, 120, 180, and 240 days, in subplots) with four replications, resulting in a total of 28 plots. Soil fertility was evaluated after the fourth growth period, while leaf analysis was determined in every 60-day period. The increasing rates of organic compost increased the concentrations of OM, NH4+, NO3–, NH4+ + NO3–, P and base saturation, while the H+Al values decreased and the N and P contents increased in the plants. Compared with mineral fertilization, soil inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus increased by 34 and 97 % in response to the application of organic compost. In response to the application of organic compost, the leaf contents of all studied nutrients remained adequate in all studied periods, except for the macronutrient N and micronutrient Mn.

RESUMO A avaliação de genótipos de feijão guandu como antagônico, resistente ou tolerante ao nematoide das galhas (Meloidogyne enterolobii), pode elevar o potencial multiuso dessa leguminosa e verificar a reação de genótipos a esse fitopatógeno, considerado um dos mais agressivos do gênero, se faz necessário devido à sua ampla disseminação e escassez de controle no território nacional. Assim este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a reação de seis genótipos de feijão guandu (Cajanus cajan) ao patógeno M. enterolobii. A avaliação final das plantas ocorreu 80 dias após a inoculação dos fitopatógenos, na qual foram mensuradas variáveis de desenvolvimento das plantas: altura da planta, número de hastes, peso da matéria fresca da raiz e peso da matéria seca. Assim como também variáveis de desenvolvimento do nematoide M. enterolobii: número de galhas, índice de massas de ovos, fator de reprodução e redução do fator de reprodução. A hospedabilidade dos genótipos de feijão guandu foi avaliada por meio de cinco critérios classificatórios de distintos ajuizamentos. Para a produção de forragem, três genótipos foram moderadamente resistentes a M. enterolobii, FGSob/14-09, FGg59-95/14-37 e FG CAM/14-49. No entanto, os genótipos de feijão guandu não se enquadraram como plantas antagonistas, apresentando suscetibilidade ao fitopatógeno.

ABSTRACT The eEvaluation of genotypes of pigeon pea genotypes as antagonistic, resistant or tolerant to the root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne enterolobii), may increase the multipurpose potential of this legume, and verifying the reaction of genotypes reaction to this phytopathogen, considered one of the most aggressive pathogens of the genus, isf necessary due to its wide dissemination and scarcity of control in the national territory. Thus, the objective aim of this studywork was to evaluate the reaction of six genotypes of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) to the pathogen M. enterolobii. The final evaluation of the plants occurred 80 days after the inoculation of plant phytopathogens, and the following in which plant development variables were measured: plant height, stem number of stems, weight of root fresh root matter weight and weight of dry matter weight. As well as dDevelopmental variables of the nematode M. enterolobii were also evaluated: gall number of galls, egg mass index, reproduction factor and reproduction factor reduction. The host suitability genotypes of pigeon pea genotypes wasere evaluated based ony means of five classification criteria from different trials. For fodder the production of fodder, three genotypes were moderately resistant to M. enterolobii, FG Sob/14-09, FGg59-95/14-37 and FGCAM/14-49. However, the genotypes of pigeon pea did not fit as antagonistic plants, presenting susceptibility to the phytopathogen.

RESUMO Avaliou-se o fluxo de biomassa do Pennisetum purpureum cv. Cameroon irrigado submetido a doses de composto orgânico proveniente de resíduos da produção e abate da ovinocaprinocultura. O experimento foi realizado em capineira de capim-elefante, durante quatro ciclos de 60 dias. Os tratamentos foram doses do composto orgânico (0; 13,3; 26,6; 39,9; 53,2; 79,8) toneladas·ha-1, além de um tratamento mineral (nitrogênio e potássio) equivalente a 720 e 900 kg ha-1 ano-1, respectivamente. Foi utilizado um delineamento em blocos casualizados em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, com medidas repetidas no tempo, sendo as parcelas as doses e as subparcelas os ciclos. As características morfogênicas do capim elefante foram influenciadas pelas doses do composto. A taxa de produção de forragem apresentou efeito linear crescente com as doses do composto para todos os ciclos avaliados, enquanto a taxa de acúmulo de forragem respondeu de forma quadrática nos ciclos 1 e 2 às doses do composto. A análise de contraste entre a adubação orgânica x mineral, revelou em todos os ciclos, exceto no primeiro, superioridade dos índices morfogênicos para a adubação mineral. Conclui-se que o capim-elefante foi responsivo ao composto orgânico sugerindo-se uma dose de 70,63 toneladas ha-1.

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the biomass flow of irrigated Pennisetum purpureum cv. Cameroon fertilized with different levels of organic compost made from waste derived from production and slaughter of sheep and goat farming. The experiment was conducted in a cut and carry of elephant grass for four 60 day-cycles. The treatments consisted of levels of organic compost (0; 13.3; 26.6; 39.9; 53.2; 79.8) ton ha-1, besides a mineral treatment with nitrogen and potassium of 720 and 900 kg ha-1 yr-1, respectively. This was a split plot randomized block design with repeated measures over time, in which levels were assigned to plots, and cycles, to subplots. Morphogenetic characteristics of elephant grass were influenced by levels of the compost. Forage production rate had increased linearly with levels of the compost in all cycles, while the forage accumulation rate responded quadratically to doses of compost in cycles 1 and 2. The contrast analysis between organic x mineral fertilization revealed, for all cycles, except the first, superiority of morphogenetic indices for mineral fertilizer. It can be concluded that the elephant grass responded to the organic compost and it is recommended the use of 70.63 ton ha-1.

ABSTRACT Composting is a useful way of transforming livestock waste into organic fertilizer, which is proven to increase soil nutrient levels, and thus crop yield. Remains from production and slaughter of small ruminants can become a source of important elements for plant growth, such as N, after microorganism-driven decomposition.The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of this compost on soil fertility and on the nutritional status and yield of the corn crop. The experiment was conducted in a Haplic Luvisol in a randomized block design with six treatments and five application rates of the organic compound in Mg ha-1: 3 (half the standard rate), 6 (standard rate), 9 (one and a half times the standard rate), 12 (twice the standard rate), and 24 (four times the standard rate) and an additional treatment with mineral fertilizers (110, 50 e 30 kg ha-1 of N, P2O5 and K2O, respectively), with four blocks. Evaluations were performed for two harvests of rainfed crops, measuring soil fertility, nutritional status, and grain yield. The compost increased P, K, Na and Zn values in the 0.00-0.20 m layer in relation of mineral fertilization in 616, 21, 114 and 90 % with rate 24 Mg ha-1 in second crop. Leaf N, Mg, and S contents, relative chlorophyll content, and the productivity of corn kernels increased in 27, 32, 36, 20 e 85 %, respectively, of low rate (3 Mg ha-1) to high rate (24 Mg ha-1) with of application of the compost. Corn yield was higher with application of organic compost in rate of 24 Mg ha-1 than mineral fertilizer combination in second crop.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desempenho de híbridos de milho, selecionados pelo seu desempenho em topcrosses e sintetizados a partir de genitores contrastantes em relação ao uso do nitrogênio. Sessenta e sete progênies S0:1 derivadas do banco de germoplasma da Ufla, foram avaliadas em combinações de topcross com dois testadores em dois níveis de nitrogênio. As seis progênies com maior tolerância e responsividade ao N (RT) e as cinco não tolerantes e não responsivas ao N (RnTn) foram selecionadas e posteriormente cruzadas em esquema de dialelo completo, resultando em 55 combinações híbridas. Os seguintes parâmetros genéticos foram estimados: variância genética entre os híbridos ( ), herdabilidade em sentido amplo na média dos híbridos e acurácia seletiva ( ). Observou-se que os parâmetros genéticos foram maiores nos ambientes com disponibilidade de nitrogênio e que a seleção precoce com base no desempenho de híbridos topcrosses oriundos de progênies tolerantes a baixos níveis de N não pode ser feita com alta intensidade. Os híbridos tolerantes a baixos níveis de N foram obtidos pelo cruzamento de pais contrastantes.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of maize hybrids synthesized from contrasting genotypes with regard to the use of nitrogen that were selected for their performance in topcrosses. Sixty-seven S0:1 progenies derived from the germplasm bank of Ufla were evaluated in topcross combinations with two testers at two nitrogen levels. The six progenies with the greatest tolerance and responsiveness to nitrogen (RT) and the five with the least tolerance and responsiveness (RnTn) were selected and, were, afterwards, crossed in a complete diallel, for a total of 55 hybrid combinations. The following genetic parameters were estimated: genetic variance among the hybrids ( ), broad sense heritability in the mean of the hybrids, and selective accuracy ( ). It was observed that the genetic parameters were greater in the environments with available nitrogen and that the early selection by performance in topcrosses of progenies tolerant to low N levels may not be made with high intensity. The hybrids tolerant to low N levels were obtained by crossing contrasting parents.

O milho-pipoca é amplamente consumido no Sul de Minas Gerais, entretanto, até o momento, nenhum programa de melhoramento especifico para a região foi conduzido. A seleção recorrente (RS) é uma alternativa viável para o melhoramento da cultura, todavia faz-se necessário verificar frequentemente o progresso obtido. Por conseguinte, objetivou-se avaliar o progresso genético obtido após dois ciclos de RS para os caracteres capacidade de expansão (PE) e rendimento de grãos (GY). Foram avaliados os ciclos um e dois das populações UFLA - E e UFLA - R, a população original (UFLA) e duas testemunhas. O experimento foi conduzido na fazenda experimental da UFLA, no delineamento em blocos ao acaso com onze repetições, dez características agronômicas incluindo PE e GY foram avaliadas. Constataram-se ganhos com a seleção para os caracteres estudados, que o tipo de grão (pérola e espinho) influenciou na resposta do progresso genético para o caráter PE e que as populações avaliadas apresentam potencial para futuros ciclos seletivo.

Popcorn is widely consumed in the south of Minas Gerais; however, up to now no specific breeding program for the region has been carried out. Recurrent selection (RS) is a viable alternative for breeding of this crop; nevertheless, it is necessary to frequently evaluate the progress achieved. Consequently, the purpose of this work was to assess the genetic progress obtained after two cycles of RS for the traits of popping expansion (PE) and grain yield (GY). Cycles one and two of the UFLA - E and UFLA - R populations, the original population (UFLA) and two controls were assessed. The experiment was conducted at the UFLA experimental farm in a randomized block design with eleven replications; ten agronomic traits, including PE and GY, were assessed. Gains from selection for the traits studied were observed, as well as that the type of kernel had an influence on the response for genetic progress for the PE trait and that the populations assessed exhibited potential for future selection cycles.

A cultura do milho no Brasil tem uma ampla diversidade no sistema de manejo. Há um grande contingente de agricultura tipicamente familiar que usa pouco insumo agrícola, e também empresas rurais que utilizam o que há de mais moderno em sistema de produção. Essa diferença no sistema de manejo fica bem evidenciada no que refere ao consumo de fertilizantes, especialmente os nitrogenados. Por isso, é necessário obter plantas eficientes no uso de nitrogênio (N) e, ao mesmo tempo, que sejam responsivas ao N aplicado. Desse modo, neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar a resposta, a diferentes níveis de N, de progênies S0:1 de milho e sua capacidade de combinação, utilizando dois testadores diferentes. Foram utilizadas 67 progênies S0:1, oriundas de híbridos comerciais, em topcross com dois testadores (T1 - híbrido simples; T2 - população per ser das progênies S0:1). Os top crosses foram avaliados, juntamente com 10 testemunhas, em dois experimentos com diferentes níveis de nitrogênio (nível médio - 50 kg ha-1 de N - e outro com nível baixo - 25 kg ha-1 de N), no delineamento experimental látice triplo 12 x 12. Os resultados obtidos permitiram verificar que não ocorreu alteração no comportamento dos top crosses em diferentes doses de nitrogênio, para produtividade de grãos. É possível identificar e selecionar progênies parcialmente endogâmicas responsivas e eficientes na utilização de N, provenientes de híbridos comerciais. Os efeitos não-aditivos foram tão importantes quanto os efeitos aditivos para produtividade de grão sob diferentes níveis de nitrogênios.

Maize crops in Brazil have a wide diversity of management systems. There is a large contingent of family agriculture, which uses little or no agricultural inputs, compared to the rural enterprise which uses the most modern production systems. This difference in the management systems is particularly noticeable in relation to consumption of fertilizers, especially nitrogenous ones. Therefore it is necessary to obtain plants with efficient nitrogen (N) use that also respond to applied nitrogen. Thus, the aim of the study was to evaluate the performance of S0:1 progenies, in top crosses, under two nitrogen levels and select the best ones based on responsiveness and efficiency. Sixty seven S0:1 progenies from populations of single cross hybrids were crossed with two testers (T1 - single cross hybrid; T2 - population per se). A hundred and thirty four hybrid progenies plus ten controls were evaluated in two field trials with different levels of nitrogen (one with average levels - 50 kg ha-1 of N - and the other with low levels of nitrogen - 25 kg ha-1 of N) in a 12 x 12 triple lattice design. It is possible to identify and to select progenies from commercial single cross hybrids that are efficient and responsive to nitrogen application. The non-additive effect was as important as the additive effect for grain yield under different nitrogen levels.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o progresso genético na obtenção de híbridos interpopulacionais com a seleção recorrente recíproca. Na safra 2005/2006, foram avaliados os híbridos interpopulacionais de milho (Zea mays) originados de três ciclos de seleção (0, 1 e 2) iniciados em 2003, os híbridos simples parentais e o híbrido duplo de F1, em blocos ao acaso com cinco repetições, em dois locais. Na safra seguinte, somente os híbridos interpopulacionais dos ciclos 0 e 2 foram avaliados nas mesmas condições, com 40 repetições por local. O híbrido interpopulacional apresentou desempenho equivalente ao do melhor híbrido parental simples em poucos ciclos seletivos. As estimativas do progresso genético por ciclo foram de 7,9% (ou 0,7 Mg ha-1) para produtividade de espigas despalhadas e de 3,5% para prolificidade. É possível inferir que a seleção recorrente recíproca é eficiente em elevar a produção de híbridos interpopulacionais obtidos a partir de populações F2 de híbridos simples de milho.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic progress obtained in interpopulation hybrids with the reciprocal recurrent selection. During the 2005/2006 planting season, maize (Zea mays) interpopulation crosses from three selection cycles (0, 1 and 2) initiated in 2003, single-cross parental hybrids and the double-cross F1 hybrid were evaluated in randomized blocks with five replicates, at two locations. In the next planting season, only interpopulational hybrids from cycles 0 and 2 were evaluated under the same conditions, with 40 replicates per location. The interpopulation hybrid had a yield performance equivalent to that of the best single-cross parent in few selection cycles. The estimates of genetic progress per cycle were of 7.9% (or 0.7 Mg ha-1) for unhusked ear yield and of 3.5% for prolificacy. It is possible to infer that the reciprocal recurrent selection effectively improves the yield of interpopulational hybrids obtained from F2 generations of single-cross maize hybrids.
