ABSTRACT Objective As the soccer culture in Brazil is more popular than schooling, this study reflected on the formal education levels of soccer (football) players through descriptive and quantitative analyses. Methods We evaluated 179 national soccer players playing various positions on different teams across six seasons (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2022). Data were collected using a questionnaire comprising the following variables: age, position in the pitch, age of professionalization, and education (years of study). The data were distributed according to the pitch position. Results The mean age, length of professional career, and professionalization age were 23±6 years, 7±5 years, and 17±2 years, respectively. In terms of education, 121 athletes (67%) completed high school, equivalent to 11 years of study. Only 5.5% completed higher education, with defensive players (goalkeepers and defenders) being the most educated at 37% (66/179). According to 2017 figures from the Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios Contínua of the Federal Government of Brazil, the schooling rate is 31.7%, wherein 46.1% of Brazilians aged 25 years or over have completed education. In this study of 179 athletes, 67% had completed high school. Thus, players outrank the Brazilian population in terms of achieving a high school education. There were marked disparities in the relative proportions of goalkeepers (85%), defensive players (68%), midfielders (63%), and forward players (64%) in terms of their education. RESUMO Introdução: O limite de estabilidade caracteriza-se pelo ângulo máximo de inclinação que um indivíduo pode alcançar e pela maior variabilidade em condições extremas; trata-se de uma estratégia arrojada e/ou perigosa do controle motor. Objetivos: Avaliar se as medidas antropométricas e a composição corporal interferem nos limites de estabilidade e nas descargas de peso em diferentes velocidades em adultos. Métodos: Foram analisados 87 indivíduos de ambos os sexos, entre 20 a 40 anos de idade, por meio de avaliação antropométrica e composição corporal. Para as avaliações de equilíbrio foram usados uma plataforma de força, testes de limite de estabilidade (LE) e troca rítmica de peso (TRP). Resultados: No teste de LE, o sexo feminino correlacionou-se negativamente com o tamanho do pé e o tempo de reação e positivamente com a excursão máxima. Na TRP, o grupo feminino apresentou correlação negativa com estatura e comprimento do membro superior (CMS) com controle de direção médio-lateral. O grupo masculino apresentou correlação negativa com CMS e controle de direção látero-lateral. Conclusões: As variáveis de composição corporal não interferem nos testes de LE e TRP em indivíduos que apresentam valores de índice de massa corporal (IMC) dentro da normalidade, exceto a densitometria óssea (DMO) em mulheres. Quanto aos parâmetros antropométricos, estatura, CMS e tamanho dos pés no grupo feminino e no masculino foram os seguintes: CMS e tamanho dos pés têm pouca influência no controle do equilíbrio postural. ABSTRACT Introduction: The limit of stability is characterized by the maximum angle of inclination that an individual can reach and greater variability in extreme conditions; it is a bold and/or dangerous motor control strategy. Objective: Assess whether anthropometric measurements and body composition interfere with limits of stability and weight-bearing at different speeds in adults. Methods: Eighty-seven subjects of both sexes aged between 20 and 40 years were analyzed using anthropometric assessment and body composition. A force platform, limits of stability (LoS) and rhythmic weight shift (RWS) tests were used for the balance assessments. Results: In the LoS test, being female was negatively correlated with foot size and reaction time, and positively correlated with maximum excursion. In the RWS test, the female group had a negative correlation with height and upper limb length (ULL), with mediolateral directional control. The male group had a negative correlation with ULL and laterolateral directional control. Conclusion: Body composition variables do not interfere in the LoS and RWS tests in subjects with normal body mass index (BMI) values, except for bone densitometry (BMD) in women. As regards anthropometric parameters, height, ULL and foot size in the female and male groups were as follows: ULL and foot size exert little influence on postural balance control. RESUMEN Introducción: El límite de estabilidad se caracteriza por el ángulo de inclinación máximo que puede alcanzar un individuo y por la mayor variabilidad en condiciones extremas; se trata de una estrategia audaz y/o peligrosa de control motor. Objetivos: Evaluar si las medidas antropométricas y la composición corporal interfieren en los límites de estabilidad y en las descargas de peso en diferentes velocidades en adultos. Métodos: Fueron analizados 87 individuos de ambos sexos, entre 20 a 40 años de edad, por medio de evaluación antropométrica y composición corporal. Para las evaluaciones de equilibrio se usaron una plataforma de fuerza, tests de límite de estabilidad (LE) e intercambio rítmico de peso (IRP). Resultados: En el test de LE, el sexo femenino se correlacionó negativamente con el tamaño del pie y el tiempo de reacción y positivamente con la excursión máxima. En el IRP el grupo femenino presentó correlación negativa con estatura y longitud de miembros superiores (LMS) con control de dirección medio-lateral. El grupo masculino presentó correlación negativa con LMS y control de dirección latero-lateral. Conclusiones: Las variables de composición corporal no interfieren en los tests LE y IRP en individuos que presentan valores de índice de masa corporal (IMC) dentro de la normalidad, excepto la densitometría ósea (DMO) en mujeres. Sobre los parámetros antropométricos, estatura, LMS y tamaño de los pies en el grupo femenino y en el masculino fueron los siguientes: LMS y tamaño de los pies tienen poca influencia en el control del equilibrio postural. Abstract Aims: The aim of this study was to verify body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, and biochemical markers of prepubertal overweight and obese boys to a 16-week futsal training program. Methods: Sixteen boys (age: 7-10 y, body mass index>thanat 95th percentileaccording to Center for Disease Control and Prevention; 35.5±7.4 percent fat) participated to futsal training program. The assessment of body composition was estimated using skinfold thickness, and the following variables were evaluated: total body mass, body mass index, body fat percentage, and lean body mass. Aerobic fitness measurementwas performed by gas exchange analysis in treadmill. In addition, an evaluation of the biochemical profile was conducted: triglycerides, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, plasma concentrations of glucose, and insulin. The futsal intervention included 60-min sessions performed two times/week. The mean intensity during training was between 57 to 88% of maximal heart rate of the age-predicted. Individual portable heart rate monitor controlled training intensity. Results: Significant increases in total body mass (4%), height (3%), lean body mass (8%), and significant 6%-decrease in body fat percentage was observed. Body mass index remained unchanged. Maximal oxygen uptake was elevated (p<0.018) by 11%. Biochemical markers were not modified after intervention. No association was found between body composition and metabolic variables. The effect size of futsal training on most variables was small (<0.5). Conclusion: Controlled intensity and adherence to this 16-week futsal training program were determinant to enhance body composition, and cardiorespiratory fitness in this group of prepubertal boys.

Method: this is a methodological study of instrument translation, with the participation of a group of five experts who took part in the translation and back translation phases and five judges. The Data set has been translated and adapted according to the methodological recommendations of International Spinal Cord Society and the American Spinal Injury Association. Results: for the translation stage, 56% of the sentences were unanimously translated by the three invited translators. Of the nine questions that comprised the instrument only four showed differences. Conclusion: a translated and culturally adapted instrument for the evaluation of the lower urinary tract of people with spinal cord injury in the Portuguese language was obtained, guaranteeing the Brazilian participation in international multicenter studies on the spinal cord injury.

OBJETIVO: Determinar a Economia de Corrida numa grande amostra de jogadores de futebol e futsal de elite em diferentes posições do campo. METODOS: Os jogadores foram subdivididos em três subgrupos: futebol (jogadores de defesa, meio-campistas e atacantes) e futsal (jogadores de defesa, alas e pivôs). Foram 129 jogadores de futebol e 72 jogadores de futsal, que competem nas respectivas primeiras divisões do Brasil. Os jogadores foram submetidos a teste de esforço em esteira (8,4 km-1.h+1,2km-1.h a cada dois minutos) até a exaustão. Consumo máximo de oxigênio, limiares ventilatórios e Economia de Corrida foram registrados por análise de troca gasosa respiratória. A Economia de Corrida foi determinada por interpolação utilizando as velocidades dos limiares ventilatórios 1 e 2 e o consume de oxigênio nas duas velocidades. RESULTADOS: Os valores de Economia de Corrida entre as posições nos dois esportes foram os seguintes: Futebol, jogadores de defesa (222,7±16,7mL.kg-1.km-1), meio-campistas (227±19,9mL.kg-1.km-1), e atacantes (219,8±17,2mL.kg-1.km-1). Futsal, jogadores de defesa (198,5±10,8mL.kg-1.km-1), alas (196,9±16,2mL.kg-1.km-1), e pivôs (190,5±11,8mL.kg-1.km-1). Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre as três posições em ambos os esportes. A Economia de Corrida dos jogadores de futsal foi 12,5% melhor do que dos jogadores de futebol. Neste estudo, os jogadores da posição pivô no futsal tiveram os melhores valores de Economia de Corrida (custo de oxigênio mais baixo). Embora o consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2max) e o limiar ventilatório 2 (LV2) fosse maior nos jogadores de futebol, a Economia de Consumo foi pior. Esta correlacionou-se positivamente com o VO2 no LV2 em ambos os esportes e em todas as posições CONCLUSÃO: Futsal tem melhor Economia de Consumo do que futebol. O presente estudo aponta a importância dos índices Economia de Consumo no plano de treinamento físico dos atletas.

OBJECTIVE: To determine running economy in a large sample of elite soccer and futsal players to obtain benchmarks in different positions. METHODS: Running Economy is the energy demand at a submaximal running velocity. Players were divided into 6 subgroups. Soccer: defenders, midfielders, and strikers; futsal: defenders, wingers, and pivots. Elite soccer players (n=129) and elite futsal players n=72 performed an incremental running test starting at 8.4 km.h-1 with increments of 1.2 km.h-1 every two minutes on a treadmill until exhaustion. Running Economy was determined by interpolation between ventilatory thresholds 1 and 2 (VT1 and VT2). RESULTS: Running Economy (measured as mL.kg-1.km-1) was compared between the playing positions in the two team sports. In soccer, running economy was 222.7 (defenders), 227.0 (midfielders), and 219.8 (strikers) mL.kg-1.km-1, respectively. In futsal, the corresponding values were 198.5 (defenders), 196.9 (wingers), and 190.5 (pivots) mL.kg-1.km-1, respectively. We no found significantly differences between the three positions in both sports. The Running Economy of futsal players was 12.5% better than that of soccer players. Running Economy correlated positively with oxygen uptake at VT2 in both sports and in all positions. CONCLUSION: Futsal players exhibited better Running Economy than soccer players; this should be considered as a factor in the athlete's training plan.

OBJETIVO: Verificar o efeito de um programa de treinamento físico aeróbio em estágios intermediários da doença de Parkinson (PD). MÉTODOS: Os pacientes eram duas mulheres e sete homens com PD, com idade entre 56 e 74 anos, classificados como estágios Hoehn e Yahr 2 a 2,5. O estudo foi concebido como um ensaio piloto aberto de longo prazo durante três meses de treinamento supervisionado e realizado em esteira ergométrica. As avaliações da troca gasosa pelo teste de exercício cardiopulmonar foram realizadas antes do início do estudo (teste 1) e após três meses (teste 2). A determinação da economia de caminhada (taxa de consumo de oxigênio durante a marcha) foi medida entre as velocidades do primeiro e do segundo limiar (LV1 e LV2) e do consumo de oxigênio (VO2) entre as duas velocidades por interpolação. RESULTADOS: Não foram observadas alterações (P = 0,153) para o consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2max: 26,7 vs. 24,2 mL.kg-1.min-1) após o período de intervenção. A economia de caminhada foi 23% maior (P <0,001) após três meses de treinamento físico aeróbio (273,4 vs. 209,4 mL.kg-1.km-1, ES = 0.99, muito alto). CONCLUSÃO: Evidências deste estudo piloto em indivíduos com DP sugerem que os ganhos na economia de caminhada podem ocorrer com um programa de treinamento de "endurance" aeróbica na esteira sem ganho na potência aeróbia, mas que positivamente pode reduzir o gasto de energia das atividades da vida diária nesses pacientes.

OBJECTIVE: To verify the effect of an endurance exercise program in middle stages of Parkinson's disease. METHODS: The patients were two women and seven men with Parkinson's disease, aged 56 to 74 years, classified at Hoehn and Yahr stages 2 to 2.5. The study was designed as an open long-term pilot trial over three months of supervised treadmill exercise training. Cardiopulmonary exercise test evaluations were performed before the start of the study (test 1) and after three months (test 2). The main outcome measure was walking economy (i.e., the rate of oxygen consumption during gait) measured between VT1 and VT2 speeds and Oxygen consumption (VO2). RESULTS: No changes (p=0.551) were observed for maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max, 24.6 vs 23.6 mL.kg-1.min-1) between tests. The walking economy was 20% better (p<0.001) after three months of aerobic endurance training (266.7 vs 212.6 mL.kg-1.km-1, pre- vs. post-training); the Cohen's "d" effect size (ES) was 0.99, a very large effect. CONCLUSION: Evidence from this pilot study in individuals with Parkinson's disease suggests that gains in walking economy occurs with a treadmill-training program without gain in aerobic power, but which may positively reduce the energy expenditure of activities of daily living in these patients.

Introdução As lesões do joelho são muito comuns na prática esportiva, dentre as quais se destaca a lesão do ligamento cruzado anterior (LCA) pela frequência e gravidade. Objetivo Analisar a força muscular concêntrica de abdução e adução do quadril em atletas pós-reconstrução do LCA que completaram seu protocolo de reabilitação e foram liberados para o retorno à prática esportiva. O objetivo secundário foi comparar a força muscular isocinética de atletas profissionais e não profissionais após a reabilitação da reconstrução do LCA. Métodos Foram avaliados 54 atletas, com média de idade 23,2 ± 4,3 anos, divididos em dois grupos: Grupo LCA (n=27) operados de lesão do LCA e Grupo Controle (n=27) não operados. Foi realizada a dinamometria isocinética dos abdutores e adutores do quadril em duas velocidades, 30 e 60°/seg. Resultados Na avaliação de força e potência muscular dos abdutores do quadril houve maior atividade muscular do lado operado na velocidade de 60º/seg e menor na velocidade de 30º/seg na comparação com o lado não operado. Conclusão A força dos músculos abdutores do quadril de atletas pós-reconstrução de LCA que finalizaram seu protocolo de reabilitação e que retornaram à prática esportiva apresentou valores de torque maiores do lado operado na velocidade de 60º/seg. Na velocidade de 30º/seg houve uma tendência do lado não operado apresentar maior força. Não foi identificada deficiência na força muscular isocinética dos músculos adutores do quadril. Além disso, não foi identificada diferença entre os membros operado e não operado dos subgrupos "atletas profissionais" e "atletas não profissionais".

Introduction Knee injuries are very common in sports, among which stands out the anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL) by the frequency and severity. Objective To analyze the concentric muscle strength of hip abduction and adduction in athletes after ACL reconstruction who finished their rehabilitation protocol and were allowed to return practicing sports. The secondary objective was to compare the isokinetic muscle strength of professional and non-professional athletes after rehabilitation of ACL reconstruction. Methods Fifty-four athletes, with mean age 23.2 ± 4.3 years were evaluated, divided into two groups: ACL Group (n=27) operated from ACL injury and Control Group (n=27) not operated. Isokinetic dynamometry was carried out of hip abductors and adductors at two different speeds, 30 and 60°/second. Results In the evaluation of muscle strength and power of hip abductors, the muscular activity in the operated side was higher at the speed of 60º/second and lower at the speed of 30°/second in comparison to the non-operated side. Conclusion The strength of hip abductor muscles of athletes after ACL reconstruction who completed their rehabilitation protocol and who returned to sports showed higher torque values in the operated side at the speed of 60º/second. At the speed of 30°/second, there was a tendency of non-operated side showing greater strength. Deficiency in the isokinetic muscle strength was not identified in hip adductors muscles. Moreover, no difference has been identified between operated and non-operated members in subgroups "professional athletes" and "non-professional athletes".

Introducción Las lesiones de rodillas son muy comunes en los deportes, entre ellas se destaca la lesión del ligamento cruzado anterior (LCA) por la frecuencia y gravedad. Objetivo Analizar la fuerza muscular concéntrica de abducción y aducción de la cadera en atletas después de la reconstrucción de LCA, que completaron su protocolo de rehabilitación y fueron liberados para volver a practicar deportes. El objetivo secundario fue comparar la fuerza muscular isocinética de los deportistas profesionales y no profesionales en rehabilitación después de la reconstrucción del LCA. Métodos Cincuenta y cuatro atletas, con edad promedio de 23,2 ± 4,3 años, fueran evaluados, divididos en dos grupos: Grupo LCA (n=27), operados de lesiones LCA y Grupo Control (n=27) no operados. Se realizó una dinamometría isocinética de los abductores y aductores de la cadera a dos velocidades, 30 y 60°/segundo. Resultados En la evaluación de la fuerza y potencia muscular de los abductores de la cadera se mostró una mayor actividad muscular en el lado operado a la velocidad de 60°/segundo y menor a la velocidad de 30°/segundo en comparación con el lado no operado. Conclusión La fuerza de los músculos abductores de la cadera en atletas después de la reconstrucción de LCA que completaron su protocolo de rehabilitación y que regresaron a los deportes tuve valores de torque superiores del lado operado a la velocidad de 60º/segundo. En la velocidad de 30°/segundo, hubo una tendencia del lado no operado a tener una mayor fuerza. No se identificó la deficiencia en la fuerza muscular isocinética de los músculos aductores de la cadera. Además, no se identificó diferencias entre los miembros operados y no operado entre los subgrupos "atletas profesionales" y "atletas no profesionales."

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether Tai Chi Chuan or ballroom dancing promotes better performance with respect to postural balance, gait, and postural transfer among elderly people. METHODS: We evaluated 76 elderly individuals who were divided into two groups: the Tai Chi Chuan Group and the Dance Group. The subjects were tested using the NeuroCom Balance Master¯ force platform system with the following protocols: static balance tests (the Modified Clinical Tests of Sensory Interaction on Balance and Unilateral Stance) and dynamic balance tests (the Walk Across Test and Sit-to-stand Transfer Test). RESULTS: In the Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance, the Tai Chi Chuan Group presented a lower sway velocity on a firm surface with open and closed eyes, as well as on a foam surface with closed eyes. In the Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Unilateral Stance, the Tai Chi Chuan Group presented a lower sway velocity with open eyes, whereas the Dance Group presented a lower sway velocity with closed eyes. In the Walk Across Test, the Tai Chi Chuan Group presented faster walking speeds than those of the Dance Group. In the Sit-to-stand Transfer Test, the Tai Chi Chuan Group presented shorter transfer times from the sitting to the standing position, with less sway in the final standing position. CONCLUSION: The elderly individuals who practiced Tai Chi Chuan had better bilateral balance with eyes open on both types of surfaces compared with the Dance Group. The Dance Group had better unilateral postural balance with eyes closed. The Tai Chi Chuan Group had faster walking speeds, shorter transfer times, and better postural balance in the final standing position during the Sit-to-stand Test.

O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o grupo muscular flexo-extensor do joelho de esportistas jovens que tiveram diagnóstico de ruptura completa do ligamento cruzado anterior (LCA). Dezoito joelhos de 18 atletas (14 homens e 4 mulheres) com idade média de 21,6 anos (16 - 32) foram avaliados com aparelho isocinético modelo Cybex 6000. O intervalo médio entre a lesão e a avaliação foi de 10,2 meses (2 - 48). Houve lesão meniscal associada em oito joelhos. Demais atletas com outro tipo de lesão associada, limitação ou bloqueio da amplitude articular, dor importante durante o exame e tempo de lesão com menos de dois meses foram excluídos do estudo. O parâmetro estudado foi o pico de torque (PT) e a relação flexo-extensora do PT nas velocidades angulares constantes de 60º/seg e 240º/seg . Foi realizado um aquecimento prévio com bicicleta ergométrica e adaptação com três repetições submáximas. O lado contra-lateral, que não apresentava lesão, foi usado como controle. O PT na velocidade constante de 60°/seg foi maior do que na velocidade de 240°/seg, seja nos joelhos com ou sem lesão. Não houve diferença significante entre o lado com e sem lesão, tanto a 60°/seg como a 240°/seg. O valor médio da relação flexo-extensora do PT na velocidade de 60º/seg no lado com lesão foi de 60 % (± 6) e no lado contra-lateral 57 % (±10). A 240º/seg no lado com lesão foi de 75 % (± 10) e no contra-lateral foi de 65 % (± 12). Como conclusões observou-se que os valores do equilíbrio flexo-extensor foram semelhantes na velocidade de 60º/seg, apesar da ruptura completa do LCA. À medida que ocorreu aumento da velocidade, ocorreu também um aumento da relação flexo-extensora do joelho, indicando leve tendência do grupo muscular flexor se aproximar do extensor, mais pronunciada no lado com lesão.

The purpose of this study was to assess the flexor-extensor group of muscles of the knee in young athletes diagnosed with a total rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Eighteen knees of 18 athletes (14 men and 4 women) with an average age of 21.6 years (range 16-32 years) were assessed with a Cybex 6000 model isokinetic apparatus. The average interval between occurrence of the injury and assessment was 10.2 months (range 2 - 48 months). There was an associated meniscal injury in eight of the knees. Athletes with any other kind of associated injury, limitation, or blockage of the movement of the joint, significant pain during the exam, or interval between injury and exam of less than two months were excluded from the study. The parameters studied were the peak torque-velocity and flexor-extensor relationships at the constant angular velocities of 60°/sec and 240°/sec. Previous warming-up was done by means of an ergometric bicycle and adaptation with 3 submaximal repetitions. The contra-lateral side, which presented no injury, was used as control. Peak torque (PT) at the constant velocity of 60°/sec was greater than that at 240°/sec for knees with and without injuries. However, there was no significant difference between the injured and uninjured sides at 60°/sec or at 240°/sec. The average value for the flexor-extensor relationship at 60°/sec on the injured was 60% (( 6), compared to 57% (( 10) on the contra-lateral side. At 240°/sec, the average value was 75% ((10) on the injured side, and 65% ((12) on the contra-lateral side. In conclusion, despite the complete rupture of the ACL of one knee, the average values for the flexor-extensor relationship were similar on the injured and uninjured sides at the velocity of 60°/sec. As the velocity increased, an increase in the values for the flexor-extensor relationship of the knee also occurred, indicating a tendency of the performance of the flexor muscle group to approach that of the extensor muscle group, and this tendency was more pronounced on the side of the injury.
