ABSTRACT: When applied at growing phase, lighting program aims to obtain quails with body weight and physiological maturity suitable for the beginning of laying. This study evaluated lighting programs at growing phase on performance, sexual maturity and egg quality of meat quail breeders (Coturnixcoturnix) at laying phase. From 7 to 49 days of age, 300 female meat quails were subjected to three lighting programs (natural, intermittent and continuous), with 5 replicates of 20 birds each. At 49 days of age, 240 quails were transferred to a shed, maintaining the same experimental conditions. Meat quails submitted to continuous and intermittent lighting programs had higher weight of reproductive system and lower ages for first egg production and to reach 50% of egg production (P < 0.05). Quails submitted to natural lighting had lower feed intake from 49 to 70 and 71 to 92 days of age and worse feed conversion up to 114 days of age. Continuous and intermittent lighting programs resulted in more precocious quails compared to natural lighting program. Quails submitted to natural lighting at growing phase presented lower egg production during all periods, not differing for birds submitted to continuous and intermittent programs from the second period (71 to 92 days of age). Intermittent and continuous lighting result in better feed conversion of breeding quails up to 114 days and a higher percentage of laying (49 to 136 days), reducing the number of days to produce the first egg and to reach 50% of laying, in relation to natural lighting.

RESUMO: Quando aplicado na fase de crescimento, o programa de luz visa obter codornas com peso corporal e maturidade fisiológica adequados para o início da postura. Este estudo avaliou programas de iluminação na fase de crescimento sobre o desempenho, maturidade sexual e qualidade dos ovos de codornas de corte reprodutoras (Coturnix coturnix) na fase de postura. Durante o período de sete a 49 dias de idade, 300 codornas de corte fêmeas foram submetidas a três programas de iluminação (natural, intermitente e contínuo), com cinco repetições de 20 aves cada. Aos 49 dias de idade, 240 codornas foram transferidas para um galpão, mantendo a mesma distribuição experimental e submetidas às mesmas condições. As aves submetidas aos programas de iluminação contínuo e intermitente na fase de crescimento apresentaram maiores peso relativo do sistema reprodutivo e consequentemente menores idades para produção do primeiro ovo e para atingir 50% da produção de ovos (P < 0.05). As aves que receberam apenas iluminação natural apresentaram menor consumo de ração nos períodos de 49 a 70 e 71 a 92 dias de idade e pior conversão alimentar até 114 dias de idade. Os programas de iluminação contínua e intermitente na fase de crescimento resultaram em codornas mais precoces quando comparados as aves submetidas ao programa de iluminação natural. Codornas submetidas a programa de luz natural na fase de crescimento apresentaram menor produção de ovos durante todos os períodos, não diferindo das aves submetidas a programas contínuos e intermitentes a partir do segundo período (71 a 92 dias de idade). A iluminação intermitente e contínua na fase de crescimento resulta em melhor conversão alimentar de codornas reprodutoras até 114 dias e maior percentual de postura (49 a 136 dias), reduzindo o número de dias para produzir o primeiro ovo e atingir 50% de postura, em relação a iluminação natural..

ABSTRACT The use of non-conventional feeds in poultry farming can reduce production costs, mainly because of its low cost, availability and chemical composition. Thus, parboiled whole rice bran (PWRB) appears as a potential use in feeding quails. Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the effects of the inclusion of PWRB in the diet of quails. In each experiment, a total of 288 seven-day-old European quails of both sexes, were distributed in a completely randomized design with six treatments and six replicates of eight quails each. The treatments consisted in the inclusion of PWRB in the proportions of 0; 5; 10; 15; 20 and 25% (first) and 0; 8; 16; 24; 32 and 40% (second). In the first experiment, a linear reduction in feed intake and weight gain was observed with the inclusion of PWRB above 5%, with no significant effect on feed conversion and carcass characteristics. However, there was no loss in the performance and carcass characteristics of quails fed with different levels of PWRB in comparison to the control group. In the second, it was observed that the inclusion of PWRB above 8% promoted a linear reduction in feed intake, weight gain and improvement in feed conversion, with no significant effect on carcass characteristics. However, quails fed 40% PWRB showed reduced intake and weight gain when compared to the control group. The use of PWRB provided an improvement in economic viability. Considering the effect on growth, PWRB can be used in the feeding of meat quails up to 32%.

RESUMO A utilização da torta de girassol (TG) na alimentação animal vem sendo estudada principalmente devido às características que lhes são conferidas, pois esse subproduto quando incorporado na ração pode aumentar a viabilidade econômica e o valor nutricional da dieta. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a inclusão da torta de girassol (TG) em dietas para frangas leves sobre a digestibilidade dos nutrientes e energia metabolizável das dietas, desempenho, composição corporal, retenção de nutrientes, metabolismo energético na fase de crescimento e desempenho na produção de ovos, maturidade sexual e qualidade dos ovos no início da fase de postura. Um total de 648 frangas foram distribuídas em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 6 tratamentos e 6 repetições de 18 frangas cada. Os tratamentos consistiram em dietas contendo níveis de inclusão de 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 e 25% TG. Os autores concluíram que as frangas alimentadas com dietas contendo TG apresentaram redução (P<0,01) na digestibilidade dos nutrientes e da energia metabolizável em comparação com aquelas alimentadas com a dieta controle. As frangas alimentadas com 25% TG apresentaram aumento (P<0,01) no consumo de ração e na conversão alimentar. A inclusão de TG nas dietas não influenciou (P>0,05) a composição corporal, a retenção de nutrientes e o metabolismo energético, bem como a maturidade sexual, desempenho produtivo e qualidade dos ovos das poedeiras de 18 a 35 semanas de idade. A TG pode ser incluída até 25% na dieta de frangas leves na fase de crescimento, sem efeito residual no desempenho produtivo no início da fase de postura.

ABSTRACT The use of sunflower cake (SC) in animal feed has been studied mainly due to the characteristics that are given to them, since this by-product when incorporated in the feed can increase the economic viability and the nutritional value of the diet. The objective of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of sunflower cake in lightweight pullet diets and check their nutrient digestibility and metabolizable energy for several parameters, including diet, performance, body composition, nutrient retention, energy metabolism at the growth phase, performance of egg production, sexual maturity, and egg quality at the beginning of the laying phase. We distributed a total of 648 pullets in our study, which was a completely randomized design including six treatments with six replicates of 18 pullets each. The treatments included diets with 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25% SC. Our study results concluded that pullets fed with diets containing SC showed a reduction (P<0.01) in nutrient digestibility and metabolizable energy compared to those fed with the control diet. Pullets fed with 25% SC showed an increase (P<0.01) in feed intake and feed conversion ratio. However, dietary inclusion of SC in pullet diets did not influence (P>0.05) their body composition, nutrient retention, energy metabolism, sexual maturity, egg-laying performance, and egg quality of laying hens between 18 and 35 weeks of their age. Therefore, up to 25% of SC could be included in the diet of lightweight laying pullets in the growth phase since it exhibited no residual effect on their productive performance at the beginning of the laying phase.

RESUMO A utilização de alimentos alternativos para coelhos visa reduzir os custos de produção, devido sua habilidade em aproveitar os nutrientes de alimentos não-convencionais. Desse modo, a casca do maracujá (CM) surge como potencial de utilização na alimentação de coelhos. Objetivou-se determinar a composição química e energética da CM e avaliar os efeitos da inclusão para coelhos em crescimento. No ensaio de digestibilidade foram utilizados 24 coelhos distribuídos entre dois tratamentos (ração referência e ração teste, composta por 70% de ração referência e 30% de CM) com 12 repetições de um animal por parcela. No ensaio de desempenho foram utilizados 120 coelhos, distribuídos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 5x2, sendo 5 níveis de inclusão de CM (0, 8, 16, 24, 32%) e 2 sexos (machos e fêmeas) correspondendo ao total de 10 tratamentos com 12 repetições cada. A CM apresentou 10,99% PB, 6,25% EE, 47,40% FDA, 54,66% FDN e 4.156,50 kcal de ED/kg de matéria seca. A inclusão da CM não influenciou o peso final e o ganho de peso dos coelhos, no entanto observou-se que os coelhos alimentados ao nível de 32% de inclusão consumiram menor quantidade de ração, sem efeito negativo sobre o desempenho. Observou-se diminuição dos níveis de colesterol e triglicerídeos em relação ao controle e um aumento da creatinina no sangue dos coelhos. Como houve melhora nos parâmetros econômicos sem prejudicar o desempenho e características de carcaça, recomenda-se a inclusão deste ingrediente até o nível de 32% em rações para coelhos em crescimento.

ABSTRACT The use of alternative foods for rabbits aims to reduce production costs, due to their ability to extracting nutrients from non-conventional feeds. Thus, passion fruit peel (PFP) appears as a potential use in feeding rabbits. This study aimed to determine the chemical and energetic composition of PFP and evaluate the effects of inclusion for growing rabbits. For the digestibility trial, 24 rabbits were distributed between two treatments (reference ration and test ration, composed of 70% reference ration and 30% PFP) with 12 replications of one animal per plot. For the performance trial, 120 rabbits were distributed within a randomized block design, in a 5x2 factorial arrangement, with 5 levels of inclusion of PFP (0, 8, 16, 24, 32%) and 2 sexes (male and female) corresponding to a total of 10 treatments with 12 replications each. PFP had 10.99% CP, 6.25% EE, 47.40% ADF, 54.66% NDF and 4,156.50 kcal DE/kg, on a dry matter. The inclusion of PFP did not influence the final weight and weight gain of rabbits, however it was observed that rabbits fed at the level of 32% inclusion of PFP consumed less amount of feed, with no negative effect on performance. Decreased cholesterol and triglyceride levels were observed in relation to control and an increase of creatinine in rabbit's blood. As there was an improvement in the economic parameters without affecting the performance and carcass characteristics, it’s recommended to include this ingredient up to level of 32% in the feed for growing rabbits.

Resumo Dois ensaios foram realizados: (1) para determinar a composição química, digestibilidade dos nutrientes e energia do farelo de castanha de caju (FCC) e avaliar os efeitos do aumento dos níveis (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 e 25%) em dietas para coelhos em crescimento sobre desempenho, características de carcaça e avaliação econômica. O ensaio de digestibilidade utilizou 24 coelhos (55 dias de idade), distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com dois tratamentos e 12 repetições, sendo uma ração referência e outra ração teste composta por 70% de dieta basal e 30% de FCC. A digestibilidade da matéria seca, proteína bruta e energia bruta do FCC foram, respectivamente, 76,61; 61,71 e 56,53%. A matéria seca digestível, a proteína digestível e a energia digestível foram, respectivamente, 74,28; 16,97 e 3,549 kcal / kg. O ensaio de desempenho utilizou 120 coelhos, com média de 45 dias de idade e peso de 1090 ± 151g, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com seis tratamentos e 10 repetições com dois coelhos do mesmo sexo por gaiola. A inclusão de FCC acima de 5% promoveu uma redução linear no consumo de ração e melhor conversão alimentar, sem afetar as características de ganho de peso e carcaça para o nível de inclusão de 20%. Também foi observada redução linear no custo de alimentação por quilograma de ganho de peso e melhora linear nas taxas de eficiência econômica e índice de custos até 25% de inclusão do FCC. Com base nesses resultados - e para não prejudicar o desempenho - é recomendável incluir até 20% de FCC na dieta de coelhos.

Abstract Two trials were conducted: (1) to determine the chemical composition, digestibility of nutrients and energy of cashew nut meal (CNM); and (2) to evaluate the effects of increasing its levels (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25%) in diets for growing rabbits on performance, carcass characteristics and economic evaluation. The digestibility assay utilized 24 rabbits (55 days of age), distributed in a completely randomized design with two treatments and 12 repetitions, with one reference and another test feed composed of 70% basal diet and 30% CNM. The digestibility of dry matter, crude protein and gross energy from CNM were, respectively, 76.61, 61.71 and 56.53%. The digestible dry matter, digestible protein and digestible energy were, respectively, 74.28, 16.97 and 3,549 kcal/kg. The performance assay utilized 120 rabbits, with an average of 45 days of age and weight 1090 ± 151g, distributed in a completely randomized design with six treatments and 10 repetitions with two rabbits of the same sex per cage. The inclusion of CNM above 5% promoted a linear reduction in feed intake and improved feed conversion, without affecting weight gain and carcass characteristics to the 20% level of inclusion. There was also a linear reduction in feed cost per kilogram of weight gain and linear improvement in rates of economic efficiency and cost index up to 25% CNM inclusion. Based on these findings - and to not hurt performance - it is recommended to include up to 20% CNM in rabbits' diet.
