RESUMO Objetivo: analisar a função mastigatória nos diferentes padrões faciais de crescimento por meio da avaliação clínica e eletromiográfica dos músculos masseteres e temporais anteriores. Métodos: foram selecionadas 65 crianças entre seis e 12 anos de idade, de ambos os sexos, que se adequaram aos critérios do estudo. Foi realizada avaliação clínica da mastigação tendo por base o protocolo MBGR e a avaliação eletromiográfica dos músculos masseteres e temporais anteriores, mediante mastigação contínua direcionada. Os dados foram analisados considerando nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: na avaliação clínica da mastigação, não foi observada diferença significante entre os três padrões faciais estudados, apenas tendência à significância para as contrações musculares não esperadas, sendo observada maior ocorrência nos dolicofaciais (66,67%), seguido dos mesofaciais (46,67%) e braquifaciais (26,83%). Na avaliação eletromiográfica da mastigação, não foi observada diferença significante entre os três grupos estudados. Ao comparar os músculos para cada padrão facial, verificou-se nas crianças braquifaciais maior atividade elétrica do músculo masseter direito em relação ao temporal direito e maior atividade elétrica do músculo temporal esquerdo em relação ao músculo temporal direito (p=0,049). Conclusão: os resultados das avaliações clínica e eletromiográfica da mastigação não se diferiram nos padrões faciais, sugerindo que o padrão por si só não é determinante nas modificações da função mastigatória e que estas podem estar relacionadas a outras variáveis não consideradas neste estudo.

ABSTRACT: Purpose: to analyze masticatory function within different facial types through clinical and electromyographic evaluation of masseter and anterior temporalis muscles. Methods: sixty-five children aged six to 12 years old, males and females, who met the study criteria, were selected. The clinical evaluation of mastication was performed based on the MBGR protocol, as well as the electromiography of masseter and anterior temporalis muscles, on the right and left side in directed continued mastication. The data were analyzed considering the significance level of 5%. Results: in the clinical evaluation of mastication, no significant differences between the three facial types studied were observed, except for a tendency to significance in unexpected muscle contractions, with the highest occurrence observed in dolichofacials (66.67%), followed by mesofacials (46.67%) e brachyfacials (26.83%). Through electromyographic evaluation, no significant differences between the three groups studied were observed. Comparing the muscles within each facial type, a higher electrical activity of the right masseter muscle over the right temporal, and a higher electrical activity of the left temporal muscle over the right temporal muscle (p=0.049) was verified. Conclusion: the results of clinical and electromyographic evaluations of mastication did not differ within the facial types, suggesting that the pattern of facial growth itself is not a determinant in the modifications of the masticatory function and these modifications might be related to other variations not taken into account in this study.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a habilidade de ordenação temporal com diferentes testes, verificar a especificidade desses testes e comparar o resultado com o grau de facilidade/dificuldade relatado pelos sujeitos. Métodos: Os indivíduos realizaram avaliação audiológica básica e Teste Dicótico de Dígitos, para triagem do processamento auditivo, e foram submetidos ao Teste Padrão de Frequência (TPF) e ao Teste Padrão de Duração (TPD), nas versões de Taborga-Lizarro, Musiek e Auditec®, para avaliar a habilidade de Ordenação Temporal. Após, foi apresentada a Escala Visual Analógica (EVA), para que os sujeitos identificassem a dificuldade de cada teste. Resultados: Foram avaliados 33 sujeitos, 29 do gênero feminino e quatro do gênero masculino, com idade entre 17 e 27 anos. Houve maior número de indivíduos que atingiram valores normais no teste Auditec® e de Taborga-Lizarro, para o TPD e TPF. No teste de Musiek, houve um número de sujeitos com resultados normais muito próximos aos de sujeitos com alteração de processamento. Na distribuição do teste mais difícil, houve significância estatística para o teste de Musiek. Quanto à especificidade dos testes, o Auditec® mostrou-se melhor, porém, a análise foi realizada apenas em TPF. Conclusão: Embora os indivíduos não tenham apresentado alteração e queixa de processamento auditivo, houve diferença nos resultados dos testes de ordenação temporal. Quanto ao grau de dificuldade relatado para o teste de Musiek, verificou-se que houve influência deste fator nos resultados dos testes. Na análise de especificidade dos testes, pôde-se observar melhores resultados para o teste Auditec®.

ABSTRACT Purpose: Evaluate temporal ordering ability with different tests, verify the specificity of these tests and compare the result with the level of easiness/difficulty reported by the subjects. Methods: The subjects carried out basic audiological evaluation and Dichotic Digit Test, for auditory processing screening, and they also underwent Frequency Pattern Test (FPT) and Duration Pattern Test (TPD), in the versions of Taborga-Lizarro, Musiek and Auditec®, in order to evaluate the temporal ordering ability. Afterwards, the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was presented, so that the subjects could identify the difficulty of each test. Results: A total of 33 subjects were evaluated, being 29 women and four men, aged from 17 to 27 years. There were a higher number of individuals who have reached normal levels in Auditec® test and in Taborga-Lizarro test, for FPT and TPD. In the Musiek test, there were some subjects with normal results very close to the ones observed on subjects with processing disorders. In the distribution of the most difficult test, there was a statistical significance for the Musiek test. In terms of the specificity of the test, Auditec® proved to be better. However, the analysis was performed only on TPD. Conclusion: Although the subjects did not present change and auditory processing complaints, we found difference in the results of temporal ordering tests. In relation to the reported difficulty for Musiek test, we verified that there was influence of this factor on the test results. In the analysis for specificity tests, better results for the Auditec® test could be observed.

RESUMO INTRODUÇÃO: Os potenciais evocados auditivos de longa latência representam a atividade cortical relacionada às habilidades de atenção, memória e discriminação auditiva. O processamento do sinal acústico ocorre de maneira diferente entre estímulos verbais e não verbais, podendo interferir nos padrões de latência e amplitude. OBJETIVO: Descrever as latências dos potencias P1, N1, P2, N2 e P3 e a amplitude do P3 com os diferentes estímulos e classificar em presença e ausência estas informações. MÉTODO: Foram avaliados 30 indivíduos, com faixa etária de 18 a 32 anos. Equiparados quanto ao gênero e normo-ouvintes. Foram utilizados estímulos não verbais (1.000 HZ -frequente e 4.000 Hz -raro) e verbais (/ba/-frequente e /ga/, /da/, /di/-raros). RESULTADOS: Considerando o componente N2, para o tone burstencontrou-se a menor latência em torno de 217,45 ms e para o estímulo BA/DI a maior latência em torno de 256,5 ms. No que diz respeito a componente P3, a latência encontrada com tone burst foi a menor em torno de 298,7 ms e com o estimulo BA/GA a maior em torno de 340 ms. Para a amplitude em P3, não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os diferentes estímulos. Quanto às informações referentes aos valores das latências dos componentes P1, N1, P2, N2 e P3, independente do estímulo utilizado houve presença dos componentes sem diferenças estatísticas entre eles. CONCLUSÃO: Houve diferença na latência do potencial N2 e P3 entre os estímulos, mas não foi observada diferença para a amplitude do P3.

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Long-latency auditory evoked potentials represent the cortical activity related to attention, memory, and auditory discrimination skills. Acoustic signal processing occurs differently between verbal and nonverbal stimuli, influencing the latency and amplitude patterns. OBJECTIVE: To describe the latencies of the cortical potentials P1, N1, P2, N2, and P3, as well as P3 amplitude, with different speech stimuli and tone bursts, and to classify them in the presence and absence of these data. METHODS: A total of 30 subjects with normal hearing were assessed, aged 18-32 years old, matched by gender. Nonverbal stimuli were used (tone burst; 1000 Hz - frequent and 4000 Hz - rare); and verbal (/ba/ - frequent; /ga/, /da/, and /di/ - rare). RESULTS: Considering the component N2 for tone burst, the lowest latency found was 217.45 ms for the BA/DI stimulus; the highest latency found was 256.5 ms. For the P3 component, the shortest latency with tone burst stimuli was 298.7 with BA/GA stimuli, the highest, was 340 ms. For the P3 amplitude, there was no statistically significant difference among the different stimuli. For latencies of components P1, N1, P2, N2, P3, there were no statistical differences among them, regardless of the stimuli used. CONCLUSION: There was a difference in the latency of potentials N2 and P3 among the stimuli employed but no difference was observed for the P3 amplitude.

Objetivo Avaliar o nível de dificuldade de identificação dos estímulos verbais e não verbais, segundo classificação dos próprios participantes, e comparar com a latência do potencial cortical P3. Métodos Foram avaliados 30 sujeitos, com média de idade de 23 anos, normo-ouvintes. O potencial P3 foi pesquisado com estímulos não verbais (tone burst)e verbais (/ba/ x /di/, /ba/ x /ga/, /ba/ x /da/). Cada sujeito classificou os estímulos em "mais fácil" e "mais difícil".Resultados : A maioria dos indivíduos classificou o contraste /ba/ x /di/ como sendo o mais fácil de identificar e o contraste /ba/ x /ga/, como o mais difícil. Os sujeitos referiram que os estímulos de fala foram mais fáceis de identificar quando comparados com tone burst. O nível de dificuldade descrito pelos indivíduos influenciou nas latências dos estímulos /Di/ e /Da/, classificados como mais fáceis, e evidenciados na menor latência do P3.Conclusão O contraste /Ba/ x /Di/ foi considerado o de maior facilidade de percepção, sendo evidenciado pela menor latência do P3. Os contrastes de fala foram classificados mais fáceis quando comparados com os estímulos tonais. Essas comparações auxiliam o clínico na escolha do estímulo utilizado e no correto diagnóstico audiológico.

Purpose Evaluating the level of difficulty of identifying verbal and non-verbal stimuli, according to the classification of the participants, as well as comparing the latency of the P3 cortical potential.Methods Thirty subjects, with a mean age of 23 years and normal hearing, were evaluated. The P3 potential was performed with non-verbal stimuli (tone burst) and verbal (/ba/ x /di/, /ba/ x /ga/, /ba/ x /da/). Each subject had to classify stimulus in "the easiest" and "the most difficult".Results Most subjects rated the /ba/ x /di/ contrast as the easiest to identify and the contrast /ba/ x /ga/ the most difficult. The subjects reported that the speech stimulus were easier to identify when compared to tone burst. The difficulty level described by the subjects influenced the latencies of stimuli /Di/ and /Da/, ranked as the easiest and they were evidenced in the lowest latency of P3.Conclusion The /Ba/ x /Di/ contrast was considered the easiest for perception, being evidenced by the lowest latency of P3. The speech contrasts were classified as the easiest when compared with the tonal stimuli. These comparisons help the clinician in selecting the stimuli and in the correct audiological diagnosis.
