ABSTRACT. Orange rust caused by the fungus Puccinia kuehnii greatly affects sugarcane and causes millions of tons of losses in production. This condition was first reported in Brazil at the end of 2009. The disease is currently present in most of the countries that produce this crop. The aim of this research was to develop risk maps of P. kuehnii infection using temperature and relative humidity data, provided by 389 automatic weather stations throughout the country. A spatial distribution analysis was carried out to assess the number of daily hours of favorable conditions for spore germination in each region. In the central-south region, where the main sugarcane producing states are concentrated, two distinct periods were observed during the three years studied. Higher favorability occurred from October to April, and lower favorability occurred from May to September. The opposite relation was observed on the coast of the north-eastern region, where conditions were more favorable to the disease from May to September. The validation data were confirmed by the results of Pearson’s correlation between sugarcane orange rust infection under field conditions and the proposed maps. In conclusion, risk maps obtained using data from automatic weather stations could contribute to the monitoring of the risk of infection by sugarcane orange rust.

A ferrugem alaranjada é atualmente uma das principais doenças da cana-de-açúcar. Redução na produtividade de genótipos suscetíveis e intermediários superiores a 40% foram registradas em muitos países, inclusive no Brasil. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de monitorar os principais genótipos de cana-de-açúcar plantados no Brasil, sob alta pressão de inóculo, quanto à ocorrência e ao desenvolvimento da ferrugem alaranjada. O experimento foi conduzido em área experimental da Usina Univalem, do Grupo Raízen S.A., localizada em Valparaíso (SP). O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, com 38 tratamentos (genótipos) e quatro repetições. Cada parcela foi constituída por três linhas de cinco metros, espaçadas de 1,4m. Entre cada parcela foi incluída uma linha do genótipo CV14, suscetível à ferrugem alaranjada. A partir da emergência das plantas, todas as parcelas foram monitoradas mensalmente para determinar o início do aparecimento dos sintomas da doença. Depois de constatados os primeiros sintomas, a severidade da ferrugem alaranjada foi quantificada mensalmente na folha +3 em três plantas por parcela. Os meses mais favoráveis para ocorrência da doença foram Fevereiro, Março, Abril e Maio. Foram observados sintomas da ferrugem alaranjada nos genótipos CTC 9, CV 14, RB93-5641, SP842025, RB72-454, SP89-1115, SP81-3250, RB85-5156, CTC 15, RB92-579, SP83-2847 e RB92-5211. Os genótipos SP84-2025 e CV 14 foram os mais suscetíveis à doença. Este trabalho contribui para aperfeiçoar o manejo integrado da ferrugem alaranjada no Brasil, além de auxiliar os programas de melhoramento visando à obtenção de novas variedades resistentes à doença.

Currently, orange rust is one of the major diseases affecting sugar cane. Yield losses above 40% have been recorded for susceptible and intermediate genotypes in different countries, including Brazil. This study was developed with the aim of monitoring the major sugar cane genotypes grown in Brazil under high inoculum pressure for the occurrence and the development of orange rust. The experiment was conducted in an experimental field of Univalem Plant, Group "Raizen S.A.", located in Valparaiso (São Paulo State). The adopted experimental design was in randomized blocks with 38 treatments (genotypes) and four replicates. Each plot consisted of three lines of five meters, spaced 1.4 m apart. A line of genotype CV14, susceptible to orange rust, was included between each plot. From plant emergence, all plots were monthly monitored to determine the onset of symptoms. Once the first symptoms were noted, the severity of orange rust was monthly quantified on leaf +3 in three plants per plot. The most favorable months for the occurrence of this disease were February, March, April and May. Orange rust symptoms were observed for genotypes CTC 9, CV 14, RB93-5641, SP84-2025, RB72-454, SP89-1115, SP81-3250, RB85-5156, CTC 15, RB92579, SP83-2847 and RB92-5211. Genotypes SP84-2025 and CV 14 were most susceptible to the disease. This study contributes to improving the integrated management of orange rust in Brazil and assists breeding programs aimed at producing new varieties resistant to this disease.

Falsa estria vermelha (FEV), uma nova doença causada por Xanthomonas sp., é diferente diferente de todas as outras doenças já descritas em cana-de-açúcar. Ela está distribuída por toda as principais regiões canavieiras do centro-sul do Brasil, mas ainda não foi detectada no norte e nordeste do Brasil nem em qualquer outro país. O presente estudo determinou a gama de culturas e plantas daninhas hospedeiras da bactéria dentre espécies pertencentes às gramíneas, através de inoculação por injeção e pulverização de suspensão bacteriana. Além da cana-de-açúcar, entre as 31 diferentes espécies estudadas, apenas sorgo, milho e aveia apresentaram sintomas, 15 dias após a inoculação. Em sorgo, no ponto de inoculação, apareceram estrias avermelhadas coalescentes. As folhas apresentaram típicas estrias vermelhas finas (1 mm), longas e paralelas às nervuras, com presença de exsudato bacteriano. Até mesmo as inflorescências apresentaram pontuações avermelhadas. Plantas de milho inoculadas com seringa apresentaram sintomas de anasarca e descoloração de tecidos ao redor do ponto de inoculação e estrias cloróticas (2-3 mm) no limbo foliar; porém, sem exsudato de bactéria. Apenas folhas de cevada apresentaram sintomas quando inoculadas por pulverização. As lesões iniciais eram estrias e manchas de cor palha, evoluindo para uma necrose total das folhas, causando a morte das plantas. A partir de folhas sintomáticas de cana-de-açúcar, sorgo, milho e aveia, realizaram-se re-isolamentos, obtendo-se culturas puras de Xanthomonas sp. cuja identidade foi comprovada através de testes sorológicos e por Rep-PCR. Diante desses resultados, surge a necessidade de realização de inspeções e campos de cultivo de sorgo, milho e aveia para verificar a presença da bactéria da FEV e determinar se o patógeno pode infectar essas culturas naturalmente.

False Red Stripe (FRS), a new disease caused by Xanthomonas sp., is different from any other sugarcane disease already described. It is distributed throughout the main sugarcane areas of the Center-South of Brazil but has not been reported in the Northeast and North of Brazil or any other country. The present work determined the host range of the FRS bacterium among grasses crops and weeds, through artificial inoculation by injection and spraying of bacterial suspension. From the 31 different species inoculated with the FRS bacterium, only sorghum, maize and oat expressed symptoms 15 days after inoculation. Sorghum presented coalescent red stripes at the injection point. Under and above the injection point, at the adaxial face of the leaves, bacterial exudates were observed on the narrow red stripes (1 mm). The symptoms in sorghum were very similar to those observed in sugarcane; however, no yellowish flex were observed on the stripes. Maize plants presented a generalized discoloration of tissues near the inoculation point and the appearance long chlorotic stripes with 2-3 mm, but no bacterial exudation. Only oat plants expressed symptoms after inoculation by spraying. The FRS bacterium was recovered by re-isolation from the symptomatic leaves of sorghum, maize and oat and its identity was confirmed by serological and Rep-PCR tests. A survey of sorghum, maize and oat fields should be carried out in order to determine whether or not the FRS bacterium can infect these crops naturally.
