Resumen Este trabajo presenta la síntesis de nanopartículas de difosfato de potasio-hierro, KFeP2O7, implantadas sobre carbón activado preparado a partir de restos de olote de maíz. La composición química y la estructura del compósito de carbono activado/difosfato de potasio-hierro (AC/KFP) se analizó mediante Difracción de Rayos X, Microscopía Electrónica de Barrido y Microscopía Electrónica de Transmisión. Se realizaron pruebas complementarias para determinar las características de la superficie, como el área de la superficie y el punto de carga cero (pHpzc). Además, la valoración ácido-base permitió determinar la densidad de sitios de superficie del compósito AC/KFP. Adicionalmente, las propiedades adsortivas del compósito AC/KFP frente a U (VI) fueron evaluadas utilizando el método de lotes.

Abstract This work deals with the synthesis of nanoparticles of iron-potassium diphosphate, KFeP2O7, implanted on activated carbon produced from corncob debris. The chemical composition and structure of activated carbon/potassium-iron diphosphate (AC/KFP) composite was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Complementary tests were conducted to determine surface characteristics such as surface area and point of zero charge (pHpzc). Further, the acid-base titration enabled to determine the surface sites density of AC/KFP composite. Adsorptive properties of AC/KFP composite vis à vis U(VI) was then tested using the batch method.

Abstract The genus Plega Navás, 1928, belongs to the subfamily Symphrasinae, a group recently transferred from Mantispidae to Rhachiberothidae. This genus is herein reported as parasitoid of the symphytan family Diprionidae for the first time, becoming the first record of association between this neuropteran subfamily and non-aculeate Hymenoptera. This new association was discovered in “Ixcateopan de Cuauhtémoc”, in the Mexican state of Guerrero, where Plega spinosaArdila et al., 2019 was found associated with immatures of the sawfly Monoctenus cuauhtemoci De Lira, 2021, a pest in forests of Juniperus flaccida Schlechtendal (white cedar). The neuropteran was found to be the most abundant parasitoid of this symphytan, becoming a potential candidate for biological control of phytophagous sawflies in juniper forests, an economically important plant species for the wood industry in the region. Considering the behavior and morphological aspects of the primary larvae and the behavior of the adults of Plega, three possible scenarios in which the primary larvae of P. spinosa board the larvae of Monoctenus to complete its life cycle are outlined. This finding reinforces the hypothesis of a generalist ectoparasitoid lifeway of the larvae of the genus Plega on larvae and pupae of holometabolous insects.

When a mineral surface is immersed in an aqueous solution, it develops an electric charge produced by the amphoteric dissociation of hydroxyl groups created by the hydration of the solid surface. This is one influential surface property. The complete hydration process takes a time which is specific for each mineral species. The knowledge of the aqueous solution contact time for complete surface hydration is mandatory for further surface phenomena studies. This study deals with the optimal hydration time of the raw zircon (ZrSiO4) surface comparing the classical potentiometric titrations with a fluorescence spectroscopy technique. The latter is easy and reliable as it demands only one sample batch to determine the optimal time to ensure a total hydration of the zircon surface. The analytical results of neutron activation analysis (NAA) showed the presence of trace quantities of Dy3+, Eu3+ and Er³ in the bulk of zircon. The Dy3+ is structured in the zircon crystalline lattice and undergoes the same chemical reactions as zircon. Furthermore, the Dy3+ has a good fluorescent response whose intensity is enhanced by hydration molecules. The results show that, according to the potentiometric analysis, the hydration process for each batch (at least 8 sample batches) takes around 2 h, while the spectrometric method indicates only 5 min from only one batch. Both methods showed that the zircon surface have a 16h optimal hydration time.

Los minerales que son inmersos en solución acuosa, desarrollan una carga eléctrica, producida por la aparición de la disociación anfotérica de los grupos hidroxilo formados en superficie. Esta propiedad es específica para cada mineral y la determinación del tiempo de hidratación es fundamental para realizar posteriores estudios de sorción en la interfase sólido/líquido. En este estudio se determinó el tiempo óptimo de hidratación del circón (ZrSiO4), comparando la técnica clásica por titulación potenciométrica con la técnica de fluorescencia a diferentes tiempos. La técnica de fluorescencia fue desarrollada gracias a las impurezas de tierras raras que son contenidas en cantidades traza en los minerales de circón. El análisis por activación neutrónica mostró que las impurezas contenidas en este lote de circón eran principalmente el Dy3+, Eu3+ y el Er3+. El Dy3+ tiene una buena respuesta fluorescente que se incrementa con las moléculas de agua a medida que este elemento se hidrata. Los resultados mostraron que el método potenciométrico es largo y tedioso, pues se requiere un lote por cada tiempo en estudio y toma alrededor de 2 h el análisis, en tanto que el método espectroscópico requiere de una sola muestra que se analiza puntualmente pasado el tiempo requerido, esto sólo toma 5 min, después del cual se continua con el proceso de hidratación. Ámbos métodos mostraron que la superficie del circón requiere de 16 h para alcanzar el tiempo óptimo de hidratación.
