Abstract The seed, the main commercialized non-timber forest product of the Brazil nut tree, still lacks information about its physical characteristics for the promotion of its germination, optimization of post-harvest processes, and industrial processing. Showed that, although each Brazil nut matrix produces fruits and seeds with homogeneous shape and weight, the batches of fruits and seeds from each matrix differ from one another. The PCA showed that most of the variables analyzed interacted with the three geometric dimensions of the seeds, allowing for differentiation between matrices and establishing criteria for seed size classes. To design or use mechanical equipment for the industrial processing of seeds, segregation of matrices with seeds that have similar physical characteristics is essential to the development and/or use of the equipment. Abstract To assess the physiological quality of soybean seeds, regulations require germination levels of at least 80% for a batch of seeds to be approved. With the evolution of technology and computing, spectrophotometric methods are advancing, making it possible to analyze the molecular vibrations present in seed samples and correlate them with germination results. The aim of this work was to analyze the use of Near Infrared (NIR) spectrometry with the aid of machine learning, in conjunction with physiological attributes, to predict the classification of soybean seed samples into accepted (above 80% germination) and rejected (below 79% germination), according to the legislation. A total of 134 soybean samples were analyzed for germination on paper, vigor by first count and tetrazolium. The NIR equipment was used to obtain the spectral curves of these samples. The Savitzky-Golay filter was used for pre-processing and data processing showed that the algorithm with the highest precision and accuracy was Random Forest, generating 96.1% recall and 98% average precision for the class of accepted lots, and 98.8% and 97.5% for the class of rejected lots. After using the algorithms, it was found that the range of 807.18 to 817.65nm can express information on physiological attributes and can be used to rank batches of soybean seeds, allowing for rapid estimation of the physiological quality of batches. RESUMO Analisar os efeitos de dados de secagem em época de safra é primordial para o sucesso do armazenamento, além de manter a qualidade fisiológica das sementes. O objetivo com este trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho de secagem em secadores fixo e móveis através de aprendizado de máquinas. Os dados foram coletados de secadores convectivos, com base em: i) total de secadores trabalhados; ii) tempo de duração de secagem (horas); iii) percentual de umidade na entrada e saída do produto (%); e iv) diferenças de umidade entres ambas (%). Foi utilizado o modelo Filtered Clusterer, baseado na técnica Simple K-Means e filtro Resample, para agrupar dados com base em suas similaridades. Os resultados apresentados demonstram que o sistema de secagem é distinto entre os equipamentos fixo e móvel, com diferenças bem definidas dentro dos sistemas de secagem estabelecidos. ABSTRACT Analyzing the impact of harvest-time drying data is crucial for successful storage and maintaining regulatory seed quality. This study aimed to assess the performance of fixed and mobile dryers using machine learning techniques. Data were collected from convective dryers, including the total number of dryers used, drying time (in hours), moisture percentages at the product’s entrance and exit, and the humidity difference between them. The study employed the Filtered Clusterer model, which utilizes the Simple K-Means technique and the Resample filter to group data based on similarities. The findings indicated distinct differences between fixed and mobile drying systems, with well-defined variations within each system. The algorithm, combined with the applied filters, proved effective in unsupervised classification by identifying and reducing inter-cluster similarity within the fixed system, thereby creating distinct classes within the dataset. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar o vigor de sementes de soja pelo teste do etanol, bem como avaliar o metabolismo fermentativo após a aplicação do teste. Foi utilizado delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado com cinco repetições, sendo os tratamentos compostos por 10 lotes de sementes de soja, com exceção das variáveis compostas pelo metabolismo fermentativo, na qual foram utilizados cinco lotes de sementes de soja. Primeiramente, avaliou-se a qualidade inicial dos lotes por meio da avaliação de teor de água, germinação, emergência de plântulas, envelhecimento acelerado, teste de tetrazólio (vigor), condutividade elétrica e respiração das sementes. Abstract: Among the vigor tests, ethanol is an alternative that provides desirable characteristics to be applied in seed-producing companies internal quality control planning. The aim was to evaluate the vigor of soybean seeds by the ethanol test and the fermentative metabolism after its application. A completely randomized experimental design with five replications was used, with treatments consisting of 10 lots of soybean seeds, except for the variables composing the fermentative metabolism, for which five lots of soybean seeds were used. First, the initial quality of the lots was assessed by evaluating water content, germination, seedling emergence, accelerated aging, tetrazolium test (vigor), electrical conductivity, and seed respiration. For the ethanol test, the seeds were subjected to soaking times of 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes until the moment of reading, and subsequently, the fermentative metabolism was evaluated (lactate dehydrogenase - LDH, pyruvate decarboxylase - PDC, and alcohol dehydrogenase - ADH). RESUMO: As sementes de coentro possuem alto valor socioeconômico em diversas regiões do Brasil, especialmente no Norte e Nordeste. A maturação de sementes determinada pela coloração influencia a qualidade da semente. Com isso, o processamento digital de imagens se tornou uma importante ferramenta para separação de sementes por meioda sua coloração, tendo em vista que essa separação normalmente é realizada por humanos e está altamente suscetível ao erro. O estudo tem como objetivo estabelecer parâmetros para separação de sementes de coentro por meio de processamento de análises de imagem red green and blue (RGB), buscando uma melhor seleção de sementes de coentro em função da sua coloração, assim como, avaliar a qualidade fisiológica por meio do teste de germinação. A partir de dois lotes de sementes de coentro, realizou-se a separação para obter amostras de 20g cada, em três tonalidades: amareladas, cinzas e mistas. As imagens foram adquiridas através da Scanner HP C4480 e processadas através do programa MATLAB, em seguida gerou-se um histograma para cada coloração analisada em cada amostra, por meio do sistema RGB. Na sequência, os resultados das médias das escalas foram analisados por ANOVA com a finalidade de ratificar a diferença das distribuições das componentes. Realizou-se o teste de germinação para ratificar os resultados da separação de sementes de coentro por meio de análises de imagens. A melhor seleção das sementes de coentro ocorreu através da escala em azul e o teste de germinação indicou que as sementes amarelas possuem qualidade fisiológica superior as sementes amarronzadas/acinzentadas.

ABSTRACT: Coriander seeds have high socio-economic value in several regions of Brazil, especially in the North and Northeast. Seed maturation determined by color influences the seed quality. With this, digital image processing has become an important tool for separating seeds by color since this classification is usually performed by humans and is highly susceptible to error. The study established parameters for separating coriander seeds by red green and blue (RGB) image analysis, seeking a better selection of coriander seeds according to their color, and evaluating the physiological quality by the germination test. Separation was carried out from two coriander seed lots to obtain samples of 20 g each in three shades: yellowish, gray, and mixed. Images were acquired by the HP C4480 Scanner and processed in the MATLAB software; then, a histogram was constructed for each color analyzed in each sample by the RGB system. ANOVA tested the averages of the scales to ratify the difference in the components’ distributions. The germination test was performed to confirm the results of seed separation using image analysis. The best selection of coriander seeds was achieved by the blue scale, and the germination test indicated that yellow seeds have a higher physiological quality than brownish/greyish seeds.

RESUMO A determinação da qualidade sanitária é importante para diagnosticar se os lotes comercializados se apresentam livres de patógenos e para tomada de decisão sobre a necessidade de tratamento de sementes. Objetivou-se avaliar a interferência dos fungos associados às sementes de lotes de coentro e o efeito do tratamento de sementes com o fungicida Metalaxil-m + Fludioxonil. O estudo foi realizado em duas etapas. No experimento I realizou-se a caracterização inicial de 18 lotes de sementes de coentro, por meio dos testes, teor de água, viabilidade e análise sanitária. No experimento II, avaliou-se o desempenho fisiológico de sementes de coentro com e sem tratamento com fungicida por meio do teste de primeira contagem e germinação. Lotes de sementes de coentro que apresentam alto potencial fisiológico podem não expressar seu máximo potencial no teste de germinação sem tratamento com fungicida, pelo efeito negativo causado pelos fungos associados às sementes, principalmente Alternaria dauci e também em associação com A. alternata. Houve melhoria na expressão do desempenho fisiológico de sementes de coentro quando tratadas com o fungicida Metalaxil-m + Fludioxonil.

ABSTRACT The determination of the sanitary quality is important to diagnose if the commercialized lots are free of pathogens and to make a decision about the need for seed treatment. The objective was to evaluate the interference of fungi associated with coriander seed lots in their physiological performance and the effect of seed treatment with the fungicide Metalaxyl-m + Fludioxonil. The study was carried out in two steps. In experiment I, the physiological potential and sanitary characterization of 18 coriander seed lots were evaluated, using the tests, water content, tetrazolium test and health test. In experiment II, we evaluated the physiological performance of coriander seeds with and without fungicide treatment using the first count and germination test. Coriander seed lots showed high physiological potential, however, not all lots expressed their maximum potential in the germination test without treatment, due to the negative effect of fungi associated with seeds, mainly A. dauci and in association with A. alternata. There was an improvement in the physiological performance of coriander seeds treated with Metalaxyl-m + Fludioxonil fungicide.

RESUMO Ormosia grossa Rudd é uma espécie amazônica que apresenta sementes bicolores, o que permite sua exploração para confecção de artesanatos e decorações. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a influência de diferentes métodos de superação de dormência no desempenho germinativo de sementes de Ormosia grossa. Para a condução do experimento, foram estabelecidos tratamentos: T1= escarificação com lixa número 80 e imersão em água à temperatura ambiente por 24 horas; T2 = punção e imersão em água à temperatura ambiente por 24 horas; T3= escarificação com lixa número 80; T4= punção; T5= imersão em água aquecida a 80 ºC por cinco minutos e T6= Controle - sementes sem nenhum tratamento. As sementes germinam de forma lenta e irregular. Dependendo do tratamento, a germinação iniciou-se entre 10 a 32 dias e, se não houver tratamento pré-germinativo adequado para superar a dormência, pode ultrapassar esse tempo. O desempenho de fitomassa e comprimentos de plântulas foram superiores nos tratamentos T1 e T2. Os tratamentos com escarificação por abrasividade e perfuração são eficientes na superação de dormência, aumentando a velocidade (3,76 e 3,12) e o percentual de germinação (98% e 96%), após 10 dias. O controle foi de 0,01 (IVG) e germinação de 37%. Portanto, é recomendado o método de escarificação com lixa seguida de embebição das sementes em água à temperatura ambiente por 24 horas, pois proporciona o melhor desempenho das plântulas e germinação.

ABSTRACT Ormosia grossa Rudd is an Amazonian species that presents bicolor seeds, allowing its exploration for handicraft and decoration making. This paper aimed to analyze the influence of different methods to overcome dormancy on the germinative performance of Ormosia grossa seeds. To conduct the experiment, the following treatments were established: T1= scarification with 80-grit sandpaper and water immersion at room temperature for 24 hours; T2= puncturing and water immersion at room temperature for 24 hours; T3= scarification with 80-grit sandpaper; T4= puncturing; T5= immersion in water heated to 80 ºC for five minutes, and T6= Control - seeds without any treatment. The seeds germinate slowly and irregularly. Depending on the treatment, germination started between 10 and 32 days and, if there is no adequate pre-germinative treatment to overcome dormancy, it can exceed such time. The phytomass performance and seedling lengths were superior in the T1 and T2 treatments. The scarification by abrasiveness and puncturing treatments are efficient to overcome dormancy, thus increasing the speed (3.76 and 3.12) and germination percentage (98% and 96%) after ten days. The control was 0.01 (IVG), and germination of 37%. Therefore, it is recommended the method of scarification with sandpaper followed by seed imbibition in water at room temperature for 24 hours, as it provides the best seedling performance and germination.

Resumo: A redução no tempo de execução do teste de tetrazólio é fundamental na tomada de decisão em pré e pós-colheita de sementes. Dessa maneira, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi estudar diferentes concentrações da solução do sal de tetrazólio, temperaturas e tempos de coloração, visando reduzir o tempo de avaliação da viabilidade de sementes de coentro pelo teste de tetrazólio. O estudo foi dividido em dois experimentos conduzidos de maneira independente, porém, sequencial. Em ambos os experimentos, as sementes foram avaliadas quanto ao teor de água, germinação e viabilidade pelo teste de tetrazólio. Utilizou-se delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. Para o teste de tetrazólio, as sementes foram pré-condicionadas por imersão direta em água, por dezesseis horas a 20 °C. No experimento I, as sementes foram expostas a diferentes concentrações da solução do sal de tetrazólio (0,25; 0,5; 0,75; e 1,0%). No experimento II, foram testadas diferentes combinações de temperaturas (35; 40; e 45 °C) e tempos de coloração (três; quatro; cinco; e seis horas). Com base nos resultados obtidos, concluiu-se que a melhor coloração de sementes de coentro para a realização do teste de tetrazólio é obtida utilizando a concentração da solução do sal de tetrazólio de 0,5% por cinco horas a 40 °C.

Abstract: The reduction in the time to perform the tetrazolium test is critical in decision making at pre and post-harvest of seeds. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate different concentrations of the tetrazolium salt solution, temperatures, and staining times, to reduce the time for assessing the viability of coriander seeds by the tetrazolium test. The study was divided into two experiments conducted independently but sequentially. The seeds were evaluated for water content, germination, and viability in both experiments by the tetrazolium test. A completely randomized design was used, with four replications. For the tetrazolium test, the seeds were preconditioned by direct immersion in water for sixteen hours at 20 °C. In experiment I, the seeds were exposed to different concentrations of the tetrazolium salt solution (0.25; 0.5; 0.75; and 1.0%). In experiment II, different combinations of temperatures (35; 40; and 45 °C) and staining times (three, four, five, and six hours) were tested. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the best staining pattern of coriander seeds for performing the tetrazolium test is achieved by using the concentration of 0.5% tetrazolium salt solution for five hours at 40 °C.

RESUMO: No Brasil e no mundo, a comercialização da soja é de grande importância para a economia, sendo considerada sua qualidade. A presença de sementes danificadas de soja diminui o valor agregado do produto. As empresas precisam de técnicas rápidas e eficazes para manter a qualidade. O presente trabalho visa identificar, através do processamento de imagens, danos causados em sementes de soja, sendo eles: a presença de sementes esverdeadas e sementes enrugadas devido às variações de umidade e temperatura. Os resultados obtidos para sementes esverdeadas indicaram que a escala de cor vermelha é a mais adequada para seleção devido a sua variação mais significativa em relação às demais escalas de cores. Para a separação de sementes enrugadas, pode-se afirmar que é possível encontrar um parâmetro de seleção com 74,3% de acerto na remoção de sementes com médio a alto grau de danos por enrugamento.

ABSTRACT: In Brazil and worldwide, commercialization of soybeans is of great importance to the economy, making their quality considered. The presence of damaged soybean seeds decreases the added value of the product. Businesses need fast and effective techniques to maintain the quality. The present research aimed to identify, through image processing, damage caused to soybean seeds, namely the presence of greenish seeds and wrinkled seeds due to variations of humidity and temperature, where it was possible to identify greenish and wrinkled soybean seeds from images. Results obtained for greenish seeds indicated that the red color scale is the most suitable for selection due to its more significant variation compared to the other color scales. For the separation of wrinkled seeds, it can be stated that it is possible to find a selection parameter with 74.3% accuracy in removing seeds with medium to high degrees of wrinkle damage.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade fisiológica e sanitária de sementes de coentro beneficiadas em mesa de gravidade. Estudaram-se duas regulagens, sendo I com ângulo X de 3,5° e Y de 3,1° e II 3,9° e 2,7°, e cinco descargas da mesa de gravidade (alta, intermediária alta, intermediária, intermediária baixa e baixa) além da alimentação, arranjados em esquema fatorial 2x6, no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. Foram utilizados dois lotes de sementes de coentro cultivar Verdão e a mesa de gravidade foi ajustada com velocidade do ar de 2,9 m s-1 na plataforma. As frações de sementes descarregadas na parte baixa da mesa de gravidade apresentaram desempenho fisiológico inferior à das demais. A regulagem I (ângulo X de 3,5° e Y de 3,1°) foi adequada para o beneficiamento das sementes de coentro do lote 1 e a regulagem II (ângulo X de 3,9° e Y de 2,7°), para o lote 2. O beneficiamento do lote 1 na regulagem II foi eficiente na separação de sementes com melhor qualidade sanitária, pela remoção de sementes contaminadas.

ABSTRACT This study aimed at assessing the quality of the physiology and health of the coriander seeds processed in a gravity table. This was investigated at two settings namely, I with angle X 3.5° and angle Y 3.1° and II with 3.9° and 2.7° angles, with five gravity table discharges (high, high intermediate, intermediate, low intermediate and low) besides feeding. The experiment adopted the 2x6 factorial scheme, in a completely randomized design, with four replications. Two coriander seed batches of cultivar Verdão were used. The gravity table was adjusted to have 2.9 m s-1 air speed on the platform. The seed fractions discharged in the lower portion of the gravity table revealed poorer physiological performance than that of the others. Regulation I (angle X 3.5° and Y 3.1°) was sufficient for the coriander seeds to be processed in batch 1 and regulation II (angle X 3.9° Y and 2.7°), was adequate for batch 2. The processing of batch 1 in regulation II was effective in separating seeds of higher sanitary quality by rejecting the contaminated ones.

Neste contexto, a semente de soja é um dos principais insumos da lavoura, apresentando forte relação entre sua qualidade e o sucesso do cultivo. Entretanto, o período após a maturidade fisiológica é crítico para a manutenção da qualidade fisiológica das sementes. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do atraso de colheita nas qualidades inicial e final de sementes de soja. O experimento consistiu em quatro períodos de colheita, nos quais foi avaliada a qualidade inicial através de ensaios de primeira contagem de germinação, germinação, envelhecimento acelerado e pelo teste de tetrazólio. Após 120 dias de armazenamento, foram conduzidos testes de germinação e envelhecimento acelerado. Foi utilizado delineamento em blocos ao acaso com oito repetições, e as chuvas na região foram monitoradas durante a fase pré-colheita. Observou-se influência negativa em todas as variáveis estudadas, ocasionadas pelo atraso na colheita. Também foi verificado um aumento na incidência de danos por umidade devido ao retardamento da colheita. Por último, notou-se um comportamento decrescente nas variáveis germinação e vigor, após período de armazenamento.

Abstract: Soybean is one of the leading commodities in Brazilian agribusiness. Its cultivation is widespread in different seed-producing regions of the country, where it generates income and local development. In this context, the soybean seed is a fundamental input, as its quality strongly influences the success of the crop. However, the period after the achievement of physiological maturity is critical for the maintenance of seed quality. For that reason, this study aimed at evaluating the effect of harvest delay on both the initial and final qualities of soybean seeds. The research consisted of four harvest times, in which the initial quality was assessed through tests of first germination count, germination, accelerated aging and tetrazolium. After 120 days of storage, the germination and accelerated aging tests were once again conducted. The experiment complied with a completely randomized block design with eight replications. The rainfall was monitored during the pre-harvest phase. All variables experienced negative impacts due to the delay in harvesting. Also, the seeds suffered more damage as the delay progressed, and the variables germination and seed vigor decreased after the storage period.

RESUMO Objetivou-se identificar a distribuição espacial da qualidade fisiológica de sementes de soja durante o armazenamento, provenientes de campo de produção de 39 hectares por meio de técnicas de geoestatística na safra 2012/2013. Realizou-se amostragem de sementes em pontos georreferenciados, para a determinação da qualidade fisiológica e análise da dependência espacial. Os resultados foram submetidos às análises de estatística descritiva, correlação linear de Pearson e geoestatística. O grid de um ponto por hectare e uma malha de amostragem georreferenciada com espaçamento de 100 metros entre pontos foi eficiente na avaliação da variabilidade espacial. Constatou-se a existência de correlação negativa entre a variável teor de proteína e ataque de percevejos e correlação significativa entre a intensidade de dano por percevejo e o teor de proteína com as variáveis relacionadas a qualidade de sementes. A qualidade fisiológica não é uniforme, particularmente em relação ao vigor, proporcionando melhor diagnóstico por meio de mapas de interpolação. A agricultura de precisão, associada ao monitoramento da qualidade de sementes durante o armazenamento, indicou variabilidade espacial da qualidade desde a colheita até o fim do armazenamento. Áreas com altos índices de danos por percevejo e unidade apresentaram baixa qualidade fisiologia e reduzidos teores de proteína. A geoestatística possibilita determinar a distribuição espacial da qualidade fisiológica de sementes de soja em área de produção de sementes, facilitando a tomada de decisão, no que se refere às áreas a serem colhidas.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to identify the spatial distribution of the physiological quality of soybean seeds during storage from a production field of 39 hectares using geostatistical techniques in the 2012/2013 harvest. Seeds were sampled at geo-referenced points for the determination of physiological quality and spatial dependence analysis. The results were submitted to analysis of descriptive statistics, Pearson's linear correlation and geostatistics. The grid of one point per hectare and a georeferenced sampling mesh with spacing of 100 meters between points was efficient in the evaluation of the spatial variability. It was verified the existence of a negative correlation between the variable protein content and bed bug attack and a significant correlation between the intensity of bed bug damage and the protein content with the variables related to seed quality. Physiological quality is not uniform, particularly in relation to vigor, providing better diagnosis through interpolation maps. Precision agriculture, coupled with the monitoring of seed quality during storage, indicated spatial variability of quality from harvest to the end of storage. Areas with high rates of bedbug and unit damage presented low quality physiology and reduced protein levels. The geostatistics allows to determine the spatial distribution of the physiological quality of soybean seeds in the area of seed production, facilitating the decision making, regarding the areas to be harvested.

RESUMO: O objetivo neste trabalho foi verificar a viabilidade do processamento digital de imagens na mensuração de plântulas de arroz e sua potencial utilização como teste de vigor em sementes. O experimento foi realizado no Laboratório Didático de Análise de Sementes, localizado no Capão do Leão (RS), utilizando sementes de oito cultivares de arroz: Irga 424, Puitá Inta CL, BRS Esmeralda, SCS 116, Guri Inta CL, BRS Pampa, BRSGO Serra Dourada e Olimar. Uma ferramenta de processamento de imagens (FPI) foi utilizada para mensurar o comprimento e a área da parte aérea e de raízes de plântulas de arroz de modo a classificar as sementes em níveis de vigor. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com cinco repetições. As variáveis avaliadas foram comprimento de raiz e parte aérea em régua graduada e pela imagem, área de raiz e parte aérea e emergência a campo. Os resultados obtidos com o FPI foram correlacionados com outros testes de qualidade por correlação de Pearson. A determinação do comprimento de parte aérea e área foliar de plântulas obtidos através do FPI é efetivo para avaliar o vigor de sementes de arroz.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper was to verify the viability of digital image processing in the measurement of rice seedling and its potential use as seed vigor test. The experiment took place at the Laboratório Didático de Análise de Sementes, located in Capão do Leão (RS), using seeds of eight rice cultivars: Irga 424, Puitá Inta CL, BRS Esmeralda, SCS 116, Guri Inta CL, BRS Pampa, BRSGO Serra Dourada and Olimar. An image processing system (IPS) was used to measure length and area of shoot and root as an index of seed vigor in rice seeds. The experiment design was completely randomized with five replications. The evaluated variables were root and shoot length in graded ruler and by image, root and shoot area, and field emergence. Results obtained with the IPS were correlated with other quality tests though the Pearson tests. Determination of shoot length and leaf area of the seedlings obtained through IPS is effective for assessing the vigor of rice seeds.

Resumo: Na produção de sementes de milho, a alta qualidade é um fator primordial. Nesse sentido, as sementes são colhidas com elevado teor de água e posteriormente secas artificialmente. Entretanto, o custo desta operação é elevado, o que a torna um limitante da lucratividade. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar, por meio da qualidade fisiológica, a possibilidade de utilização de períodos de intermitência na secagem de sementes de milho em espiga, em um sistema de secagem estacionário. As sementes foram colhidas em espiga, próximo ao ponto de maturidade fisiológica, com teor de água médio de 35%. Os tratamentos constaram de quatro períodos de intermitência (3, 6 e 9 horas) e um período sem intermitência. As sementes foram armazenadas durante seis meses. Para avaliação da qualidade fisiológica das sementes, foram realizados os testes de germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, teste de frio e condutividade elétrica. O delineamento experimental empregado foi inteiramente ao acaso, em parcelas subdivididas. No sistema de secagem estacionário, períodos de intermitência de até 6 horas por dia na secagem de sementes de milho em espiga preservaram a qualidade fisiológica das sementes. A utilização de períodos de intermitência na secagem de sementes de milho proporciona sementes de maior qualidade fisiológica e maior potencial de armazenamento, em relação à secagem continua.

Abstract: The high quality is a factor that must be assured in a corn seed production system. In order to achieve this, seeds are harvested with high moisture content, and then artificially dried. However, the costs of this operation are high and may reduce the profits. The objective of the present study was to evaluate, through the physiological quality, the possibility of using intermittence periods for drying corn seeds on the cob in a stationary system. The seeds were harvested on the cob, close to the physiological maturity stage, with an average moisture content of 35%. The treatments consisted of four periods of intermittence (3, 6 and 9 hours) and one period without intermittence. The seeds were stored for six months. To evaluate the physiological quality of the seeds, germination, first germination, electrical conductivity, and the cold tests were performed. The experimental design was completely randomized, in split plots. In a stationary drying system, periods of intermittence of up to 6 hours per day helped to preserve the physiological quality of the corn seeds. The use of intermittence periods in the drying process provides corn seeds with higher physiological quality and greater storage potential, in comparison with the continuous drying.
