Abstract The number of electronic books that enter libraries in PDF format is greater every day. Complicating and making it almost unfeasible for some processes, traditionally carried out manually by librarians such as the assignment of subjects, to be done. In this context, it is necessary to design and develop applications that assist librarians. Taking this into consideration, we present in this work the evaluation of tools for extracting information from books in PDF format that could be used later as raw material for an automatic indexing system. To do this, we carried out a first evaluation of five software (PDFMiner.six, PDFAct, PDF-extract, PDFExtract, and Grobib), later, as PDFAct achieved the best performance, we did a second evaluation to find out their ability to identify and extract information from the books such as titles, indexes, sections, titles of tables and graphs and bibliographic reference which are relevant information for any indexing system. It is concluded that none of the evaluated tools adequately extracts the different parts of PDF books, although PDFAct has achieved a better performance than the rest.

Resumen El número de libros electrónicos que ingresan en las bibliotecas en formato PDF cada día es mayor, complicando y haciendo casi inviables algunos procesos realizados tradicionalmente de forma manual por los bibliotecarios, como es la asignación de materias. En este contexto, se hace necesario el diseño y desarrollo de aplicaciones que asistan a los bibliotecarios. Teniendo esto en consideración, presentamos en este trabajo la evaluación de herramientas de extracción de información de libros en PDF que podrían usarse posteriormente como materia prima para un sistema de indización automática. Para ello, realizamos una primera evaluación de cinco softwares (PDFMiner.six, PDFAct, PDF-extract, PDFExtract y Grobib) y, posteriormente, como PDFAct consiguió el mejor rendimiento, hicimos una segunda evaluación para averiguar su capacidad para identificar y extraer informaciones de los libros, tales como títulos, índices, secciones, títulos de tablas y gráficos y referencias bibliográficas, informaciones relevantes para cualquier sistema de indización. Se concluye que ninguna de las herramientas evaluadas extrae adecuadamente las diferentes partes de libros en PDF, si bien, PDFAct ha logrado un rendimiento superior al del resto.

The body research comprised of more than two-thousand titles on post-Paleolithic cave art in Spain spanning the one-hundred and three years (1907-2010) is examined in terms of author productivity, collaboration patterns, foreign authorship, and the structural dynamics of scientific collaboration. A más de un siglo de investigación sobre la pintura rupestre postpaleolítica en España, que ha llevado a una producción científica que supera los 2 000 registros, se lleva a cabo un estudio para evaluar su rendimiento durante el periodo 1907-2010. Se presentan los resultados obtenidos tras el análisis de la productividad de los autores, de la colaboración científica, del papel de la autoría extranjera en la producción científica y de la estructura y dinámica de los grupos de investigación. Se concluye que la investigación sobre la pintura rupestre postpaleolítica en España sigue descansando en el trabajo individual y en autores independientes que carecen de adscripción institucional.

A partir de variables tales como objetivo, origen, entorno, estructura, productores y costos de elaboración, se realizó un análisis comparativo entre tesauros, folksonomías, taxonomías y ontologías como sistemas de organización y representación del conocimiento. Aunque estas herramientas comparten el mismo objetivo, sus características están en relación directa tanto con sus aplicaciones como con su complejidad. Los resultados han sido sistematizados en tablas duales. Se concluye que los ambientes digitales han propiciado la reutilización y adaptación de herramientas tradicionales de representación del conocimiento, como ocurre con las taxonomías y folksonomías; han permitido el paso natural de algunas herramientas del mundo analógico al electrónico, como son los tesauros; y han propiciado el desarrollo de otras nuevas, como es el caso de las ontologías. También se pone de presente que estos sistemas de organización y representación del conocimiento no son incompatibles entre sí, y que de hecho, pueden incorporarse simultáneamente en el diseño de una misma herramienta web.

On the basis of such variables as objective, source, environment, structure, producers and elaboration costs, a comparative analysis was made among thesauri, folksonomies, taxonomies and ontologies as systems of knowledge organization and representation. Although these tools share the same objective, their characteristics are in direct relationship with their application and their complexity. The results were systematized in dual tables. The conclusion was arrived at that digital environments have stimulated the reuse and adaptation of traditional tools of knowledge representation, as it happens with taxonomies and folksonomies; they have allowed for a natural transference of some tools from the analogical to the electronic world such as thesauri, and they have promoted the development of other new tools such as ontologies. It is also remarked that these systems of knowledge organization and representation are not compatible among them and that, in fact, can be simultaneously incorporated in the design of one and the same web tool.

Objetivou-se avaliar os índices de consistência entre 30 bibliotecas universitárias brasileiras das regiões sul e sudeste por meio de fórmula matemática específica. Como metodologia foi selecionada uma amostra de 30 bibliotecas universitárias que, de acordo com informações em seus sites oficias, dispunham de acervo composto por mais de 100.000 exemplares e permitiam a busca por meio de catálogo on-line. Buscas foram realizadas em cada uma das universidades por meio de seus sites, solicitando livros que continham uma determinada palavra em seu título e publicação em um determinado ano. Como resposta, obtivemos uma lista com os títulos dos documentos disponíveis na biblioteca, na qual escolhemos aleatoriamente um título e solicitamos a visualização do registro completo para comprovação da existência do assunto determinado. Esse procedimento foi repetido até localizarmos cinco bibliotecas com o mesmo título e com os assuntos atribuídos. Como resultado, obtivemos 10 ensaios compostos cada um de 1 quadro e 1 tabela demonstrando as bibliotecas selecionadas, os assuntos encontrados, as linguagens documentárias (ferramentas) e os índices de consistência “relaxado” e “rígido’” Esses ensaios demonstraram grande discrepância entre os valores dos índices de consistência com intervalos entre 73,3% a 34,4%, no índice relaxado e entre 60% e 9,6% no rígido. Verificamos que a coincidência na determinação dos assuntos não é muito elevada, ficando abaixo dos 39%. Concluímos que a diferença entre os índices de consistência pode ser creditada a fatores como: incompatibilidade entre as linguagens documentárias; falta de atualização constante dessas linguagens para acompanhar a evolução do conhecimento; ausência de uma política de indexação bem definida com diretrizes claramente estabelecidas. Procedimentos de indexação seguidos pelos indexadores poderiam contribuir para que o índice de consistência fosse percentualmente maior, uma vez que haveria parâmetros para o processo de indexação.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the consistency indexes among 30 Brazilian university libraries from the south and south-east regions through a specific mathematical formula. It was selected a sample of 30 university libraries that, according to the information in their official sites, have a collection consisted of more than 100.000 copies and allow the search into the on-line catalog. Searches were carried out in every university by means of their sites, requesting books that contained a certain word in its title and were printed in a certain year. The response was a list of available titles in the library, from which we chose at random a title and asked to visualize the complete record to verify the existence of a given subject. This procedure was repeated until we found the same title in five libraries with the chosen subjects. The result is 10 trials, each one consisting of one figure and one table showing the selected libraries, the subjects, the documentary languages (tools) and the consistency indexes “relaxed” and “rigid”. These trials show great discrepancy between the values of consistency indexes with intervals between 73,3% to 34,4% in the “relaxed” index, and between 60% and 9,6% in the “rigid” one. It was revealed that the coincidence in determining the subjects is not too high remaining below 39%. It is concluded that the difference between the consistency indexes may be due to factors as: incompatibility among documentary languages; lack of updating of these languages so as to follow the knowledge evolution; absence of a well-defined indexing policy with guidelines clearly established. Procedures of indexing followed by indexers could contribute to the consistency index to be bigger in percentage, since there would be parameters for the indexing process.
