ABSTRACT Purpose To present a method for analyzing breathing modes with infrared thermography. Methods This exploratory cross-sectional study used 38 thermal images of inspiration and expiration with nasal breathing and simulated mouth breathing in four nasal breathers without respiratory complaints. Three different data selection forms (line, rectangle, and ellipse) were used to extract the minimum, mean, and maximum temperatures of the regions of interest (nose and mouth) using the FLIR Tools® software. Results Among the three selection forms, there was greater temperature variability obtained with the line, revealing limitations in this measurement. There were no differences between the rectangle and ellipse values, showing that both selection forms present similar temperature extraction results. The comparison results between nose and mouth temperatures during inspiration and expiration indicated a statistically significant difference between all measurements, except for mean inspiration temperatures with the rectangle and ellipse. The breathing mode can be distinguished in both inspiration and expiration when using mean mouth temperatures with the rectangle and ellipse. RESUMO Objetivo Apresentar um método de análise do modo respiratório por meio da termografia infravermelha. Método Estudo transversal exploratório de 38 imagens térmicas que representavam o momento da inspiração e da expiração durante a respiração nasal e durante a simulação da respiração oral de quatro voluntárias respiradoras nasais sem queixas respiratórias. ABSTRACT Purpose to verify the association between the perception of mothers of premature infants regarding the features that may interfere with breastfeeding and the mother's socioeconomic data, pregnancy and the baby's clinical data. Methods observational, descriptive and analytical quali-quantitative cross-sectional study. One hundred and fourteen mothers of premature infants were included and data were collected through questionnaires, applied at hospital discharge, and analysis of medical records. ABSTRACT Purpose to analyze how socioeconomic, pregnancy and childbirth factors relate to the feeding situation in the sixth month of life of full-term babies. Methods longitudinal observational study, with 98 mothers of full-term babies. RESUMO Objetivo analisar como os fatores socioeconômicos, da gestação e do parto se relacionam com a situação da alimentação no sexto mês de vida de bebês nascidos a termo. ABSTRACT Purpose To propose a methodology for analyzing data generated by an instrument measuring non-nutritive sucking pressure in newborns. Methods An analytical observational study was developed, with a cross-sectional design, considering the data collected from 24 full-term newborns without complications. Three collections from each neonate were analyzed, with duration of 2 minutes and a 2-minute interval between them. The defined parameters were extracted using a program developed in Matlab®. The results were obtained by analyzing and comparing 12 variables at a 5% confidence level. Comparison of manual and computerized analyzes was also carried out using the intraclass correlation coefficient. Results The multiple comparison between the three collection moments showed that the significant statistical differences occurred between collections one and two and two and three. When analyzing and comparing each variable separately, it was noted that the second collection showed: greater number of sucking groups, greater number of suctions, less time to start the sucking groups, longer time of sucking groups, less number of sporadic suctions, higher mean pressure values and with less standard deviation, more number of pauses with shorter time of pauses. The intraclass correlation coefficient revealed almost perfect agreement for the 12 evaluated parameters. Conclusion The 12 variables analyzed are relevant, especially in the second collection. ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the sensation of pain and the range of mandibular movements of adult individuals with temporomandibular disorder, before and after the application of the athletic tape. Method This is a double-blind randomized clinical trial, in which 22 adults with temporomandibular disorder participated, randomly allocated into two groups, with group A comprising 10 women and one man (mean age 28.2±8.3 years) and group B comprising nine women and two men (mean age 26.2±3.9 years). Group A was submitted to the application of the athletic tape on the masseter with 40% stretch and the group B to the application of the athletic tape on the masseter without stretching. All participants underwent the application of the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). Pain threshold assessment was performed using an algometer to apply pressure to measurement points. The measurement of mandibular movements was performed using a caliper. The athletic tape was glued using the I technique, with a fixed point over the insertion and a movable point over the origin of the masseter muscle. Participants remained with the athletic tape for 24 hours and were re-evaluated. Results There was pain relief in the group A in the temporomandibular joint on the right and at the origin of the masseter on the left. The group B showed a reduction in pain in the left anterior temporal region. No differences were found in mandibular movements after intervention, as well as no difference was found in the comparison by groups. RESUMO Objetivo Analisar a sensação de dor e amplitude dos movimentos mandibulares de indivíduos adultos com disfunção temporomandibular, antes e após aplicação da bandagem elástica por 24 horas. Método Trata-se de um ensaio clínico randomizado duplo-cego, do qual participaram 22 sujeitos adultos com disfunção temporomandibular, alocados aleatoriamente em dois grupos, sendo grupo A composto por 10 mulheres e um homem (média de idade de 28,2±8,3 anos) e grupo B por nove mulheres e dois homens (média de idade de 26,2±3,9 anos). RESUMO Objetivo: investigar a prevalência de aleitamento materno exclusivo aos seis meses de vida em bebês nascidos a termo em um hospital público e os principais fatores associados ao desmame precoce em período de pandemia causada pela síndrome respiratória aguda grave. Métodos: estudo observacional, transversal, realizado com 98 mães de bebês a termo, no período de janeiro a agosto de 2021, intervalo marcado pela pandemia da COVID-19. As participantes responderam a dois questionários, um no pós-parto imediato, com questões de identificação e socioeconômicas, antecedentes gineco-obstétricos, gestação e parto atual; e, o segundo, seis meses após o parto, continha questões sobre a situação alimentar da criança. Para verificar a associação entre a prevalência do aleitamento materno exclusivo aos seis meses de vida e as demais variáveis foram aplicados os testes Qui-quadrado, Exato de Fisher, Qui-quadrado de comparações múltiplas e Teste T, com nível de significância de 5%. ABSTRACT Purpose: to investigate the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months old in full-term newborns at a public hospital and the main factors associated with early weaning, during the pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome. Statistical tests were used to associate the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months old and other variables, at the 5% significance level. ABSTRACT Purpose To compare the maximum anterior and posterior tongue pressure, tongue endurance, and lip pressure in Class I, II, and III malocclusions and different facial types. Methods A cross-sectional observational analytical study was carried out in 55 individuals (29 men and 26 women) aged between 18 and 55 years. The participants were divided into groups according to Angle malocclusion (Class I, II, and III) and facial type. The maximum anterior and posterior tongue pressure, tongue endurance, and maximum lip pressure were measured using the IOPI (Iowa Oral Performance Instrument). To determine the facial type, the cephalometric analysis was accomplished using Ricketts VERT analysis as a reference. Results There was no statistically significant difference when comparing the maximum pressure of the anterior and posterior regions of the tongue, the maximum pressure of the lips, or the endurance of the tongue in the different Angle malocclusion types. ABSTRACT Purpose To assess the effectiveness of myotherapy exercises in increasing tongue pressure and strength. A secondary aim was to analyze the exercise types, training parameters, and functional results. Research strategies This systematic literature review was based on the Prisma protocol guidelines. Selection criteria The review included clinical trials that assessed the effects of tongue muscle training, with no restriction on the language or year of publication. Data analysis The steps included eliminating duplicates; reading abstracts and excluding studies that did not meet the inclusion criteria; reading selected articles in full text, extracting important data, and gathering them in a table; and meta-analysis, using the inverse variance method. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed with the Joanna Briggs Institute’s tool. ABSTRACT Individuals with trisomy 21 may have muscle hypotonia of the speech articulation organs, an enlarged protruding tongue positioned on the floor of the mouth, and a lack of lip closure. The stimulating palatal plate is an intraoral appliance that, associated with myofunctional therapy, aims to improve these children’s habitual lip and tongue posture. This study aimed to present the cases of four male children with trisomy 21, with a mean age of 6.7 and a standard deviation of 7.8 months, who used the stimulating palatal plate in association with myofunctional therapy. The children used the plate for 6 months and did exercises based on the orofacial regulation therapy, and their parents received instructions on feeding them and removing deleterious oral habits. In the first session and at the end of the treatment, each child’s face was video-recorded for 5 minutes at rest, and two researchers analyzed independently their habitual tongue and lip posture. RESUMO Indivíduos com Trissomia do 21 podem apresentar hipotonia muscular dos órgãos fonoarticulatórios, língua alargada, posicionada no assoalho oral e protrusa e ausência de selamento labial. A placa palatina de memória é um dispositivo intraoral que, associado à terapia miofuncional, visa à melhora da postura habitual dos lábios e da língua dessas crianças. O objetivo deste trabalho foi apresentar os casos de quatro crianças com Trissomia do 21, do sexo masculino, com média de idade de 6,7 e desvio-padrão de 7,8 meses, que fizeram uso da placa palatina de memória de forma associada à terapia miofuncional. As crianças utilizaram a placa por seis meses, realizaram exercícios baseados na terapia de regulação orofacial e receberam orientações quanto à alimentação e retirada de hábitos orais deletérios. Na primeira sessão e ao final do tratamento, foi realizada a gravação de 5 minutos da face de cada criança em repouso e a análise da postura habitual de língua e de lábios foi realizada por dois pesquisadores independentes. ABSTRACT Purpose: to present a scoping review protocol to identify and analyze free applications available for Android and iOS operating systems to assist nursing mothers in terms of breastfeeding. Methods: the methodological structure of this scoping review has nine stages: developing the research question; defining descriptors; establishing application inclusion and exclusion criteria; locating applications; listing applications; selecting them by title and icon analysis; collecting application data; selecting them by application data analysis and quality assessment. The research question was developed based on the participants-concept-context strategy. Breastfeeding mobile applications assistance will be searched in Google Play and Apple Store. Two independent raters will select applications, collect data, and assess their quality. Quality assessment will use the Mobile App Rating Scale, which will be correlated with user ratings. RESUMO Objetivo: apresentar um protocolo de revisão de escopo destinado a identificar e analisar os aplicativos gratuitos disponíveis nos sistemas operacionais Android e iOS para o auxílio de nutrizes acerca da amamentação. Métodos: a estrutura metodológica desta revisão de escopo incluiu nove etapas: elaboração da pergunta norteadora; definição dos descritores; definição dos critérios para inclusão e exclusão de aplicativos; localização de aplicativos; listagem dos aplicativos; seleção por análise de título e ícone; levantamento dos dados dos aplicativos; seleção pela análise dos dados dos aplicativos e avaliação de qualidade. Abstract Objectives: To analyze breathing modes with infrared thermography. Methods: Cross-sectional observational exploratory study conducted in 20 female participants with a mean age of 26.0-years. The thermograms were made following the principles of the American Academy of Thermology and the Brazilian Thermology Society. The camera FLIR A315 (FLIR Inc., Santa Barbara, CA) was used for the tests. The recordings consisted of the participants breathing normally through the nose for 2 min and simulating oral/oronasal breathing for another 2min. The thermograms were analyzed with the FLIR Tools software. An ellipse was placed between the nostrils and the lip commissures to obtain the mean temperatures. The collection was made by two independent researchers, and the normalized non-dimensional temperature was calculated. Results: The temperature in nasal breathing is higher than in oral/oronasal breathing both for inhaling and exhaling when measured in the region of the mouth. The exhaling temperatures were higher than the inhaling ones in oral/oronasal breathing (through the nose and the mouth) and nasal breathing (only through the nose). The temperature difference between exhaling and inhaling (ΔT) was greater in oral/oronasal breathing when measured in the region of the mouth. Conclusion: The thermographic assessment of breathing modes may be made by comparing the mean temperatures of the mouth, using an ellipse. RESUMO Objetivo identificar e sintetizar evidências sobre estratégias utilizadas no treino da mastigação e deglutição em indivíduos com disfunção temporomandibular e dor orofacial. Estratégia de pesquisa revisão de escopo desenvolvida com consulta nas bases de dados MEDLINE, LILACS, BBO, IBECS, BINACIS, CUMED, SOF, DeCS, Index Psi, LIPECS e ColecionaSUS (via BVS), Scopus, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane e na literatura cinzenta: Biblioteca Digital Brasileira de Teses e Dissertações (BDTD), OpenGrey e Google Acadêmico. Critérios de seleção estudos quantitativos ou qualitativos, sem limite temporal e sem restrição de idioma, que continham os seguintes descritores ou palavras-chave: Articulação Temporomandibular, Síndrome da Disfunção da Articulação Temporomandibular, Transtornos da Articulação Temporomandibular, Dor Facial, Mastigação, Deglutição, Terapêutica, Terapia Miofuncional e Fonoaudiologia. Resultados as 11 publicações incluídas foram publicadas entre 2000 e 2018. As estratégias mais utilizadas foram o treino da mastigação bilateral simultânea, seguido da mastigação bilateral alternada. Na deglutição, foi proposto aumento do tempo mastigatório para reduzir o alimento em partículas menores e lubrificar melhor o bolo alimentar e treinos com apoio superior de língua. Conclusão o treinamento funcional demonstrou efetividade na reabilitação dos pacientes, embora não siga uma padronização e não seja realizado de forma isolada. Os estudos encontrados apresentam baixo nível de evidência. Considera-se fundamental a realização de estudos mais abrangentes e padronizados, como ensaios clínicos randomizados.

Selection criteria Quantitative or qualitative studies, with no restriction on time or language of publication, with the following descriptors or keywords: Temporomandibular Joint; Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome; Temporomandibular Joint Disorders; Facial Pain; chewing (Mastication); swallowing (Deglutition); Therapeutics; Myofunctional Therapy; Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences. In the first stage, two reviewers independently screened the studies by title and abstract reading. In the second stage, the reviewers independently read the preselected documents in full text. In case of divergences, a third researcher was consulted. Results The 11 documents included in the review were published between 2000 and 2018. The mostly used training strategies were simultaneous bilateral mastication/chewing, followed by alternating bilateral mastication. In swallowing, increased mastication time was proposed to break food into smaller bits and better lubricate the bolus; training with upper tongue support was also indicated. Conclusion Functional training proved to be effective in rehabilitation, although it was not standardized or performed alone. The studies had low levels of evidence. It is essential to conduct more encompassing and standardized studies, such as randomized clinical trials.

RESUMO Objetivo: verificar os efeitos do exercício de pressão de língua contra a papila incisiva, realizado de forma isolada e associada ao treino funcional da deglutição, na atividade elétrica da musculatura supra-hioidea e na autopercepção da mudança estética na região submandibular. Métodos: estudo experimental, analítico e prospectivo, realizado com 27 mulheres entre 30 e 78 anos, divididas em dois grupos de tratamento (G1 e G2) e um grupo controle (GC). Os indivíduos foram submetidos a oito semanas de treinamento, sendo que o G1 realizou somente o exercício pressão de língua contra a papila incisiva, o G2 realizou o mesmo exercício associado ao treino da deglutição e o GC não foi submetido a qualquer intervenção. A atividade elétrica da musculatura supra-hioidea foi obtida por meio da eletromiografia de superfície no início e ao final do estudo, quando também foi aplicado um questionário de autopercepção dos possíveis resultados estéticos obtidos. Foram utilizados os testes Qui-quadrado de Pearson, Exato de Fisher, Mann Whitney, Kruskal Wallis e Wilcoxon, com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: foram encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significativas na atividade elétrica entre os valores inicial e final tanto no G1 quanto no G2, fato não observado no GC. Não houve diferença significativa entre os grupos em relação à autopercepção da melhora visual e da melhora muscular. Conclusão: as duas estratégias analisadas mostraram-se igualmente eficazes para promover o maior recrutamento da musculatura supra-hioidea, porém, sem impacto na autopercepção da mudança estética na região submandibular.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to verify the effects of tongue pressure exercises against the incisive papilla, used both alone and in combination with functional swallowing training, on the electrical activity of the suprahyoid muscles and the self-perception of aesthetic changes in the submandibular region. Chi-square, Fisher’s exact, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal Wallis, and Wilcoxon tests were used. The significance level was set at 5%. Methods: an experimental, analytical, prospective study on 27 women, aged 30 to 78 years, divided into two treatment groups (G1 and G2), and a control group (CG). Individuals were submitted to 8 weeks of training, in which G1 performed only tongue pressure exercises against the incisive papilla, and G2 performed the same exercises in combination with swallowing training, while CG was not submitted to any intervention. The suprahyoid muscle electrical activity was obtained with surface electromyography at the beginning and end of the study when subjects also answered a self-perception questionnaire on possible aesthetic results. Pearson’s chi-square, Fisher’s exact, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal Wallis, and Wilcoxon tests were used. The significance level was set at 5%. Results: statistically significant differences were found between the initial and final electrical activity in both G1 and G2, which was not found in CG. There was no significant difference between the groups regarding their self-perception of visual or muscle improvements. Conclusion: both strategies analyzed were equally effective to increase suprahyoid muscle recruitment, though with no impact on the self-perception of aesthetic changes in the submandibular region.

RESUMO Objetivo comparar os efeitos imediatos da fotobiomodulação com laser nos comprimentos de onda 660 nm e 808 nm na fadiga do músculo orbicular da boca. Métodos trata-se de um estudo experimental randomizado, com 60 mulheres, com idade entre 19 e 43 anos. As participantes foram divididas em quatro grupos. O grupo GV recebeu irradiação com laser de comprimento de onda de 660 nm em quatro pontos do orbicular da boca; o grupo GIV recebeu irradiação com laser de comprimento de onda de 808 nm nos mesmos pontos; o grupo controle não recebeu irradiação e o grupo placebo passou pelos mesmos procedimentos dos grupos GV e GIV, porém o equipamento não foi acionado. A irradiação foi realizada com laser de 100 mW de potência, 4 J de energia por ponto e 133,3 J/cm2 de fluência. Avaliação eletromiográfica foi realizada antes e após a irradiação, concomitantemente ao exercício de protrusão labial sustentada até a sensação de fadiga. O índice de fadiga eletromiográfica foi calculado a partir da frequência mediana. A amplitude do sinal foi avaliada, examinando o RMS, e os valores normalizados pelo pico. A diferença na amplitude entre lábios superiores e inferiores também foi analisada. Todas as variáveis foram comparadas antes e após a irradiação. Resultados não foram encontradas diferenças significativas nas medidas antes e após a irradiação. Conclusão a fotobiomodulação, com os parâmetros investigados neste estudo, não resultou em efeitos imediatos sobre a fadiga do músculo orbicular da boca.

ABSTRACT Purpose To compare the immediate effects of laser photobiomodulation at wavelengths of 660 nm and 808 nm on fatigue of the orbicularis oris. Methods This is a randomized study with 60 women aged between 19 and 43 years. The participants were divided into four groups. Group RG received photobiomodulation with a laser wavelength of 660 nm at four points of the orbicularis oris; group IRG received photobiomodulation with a laser wavelength of 808 nm at the same points; the control group did not receive light treatment; and the placebo group underwent the same procedures as RG and IRG but with the equipment switched off. The irradiation was performed with a laser of 100 mW of power, 4 J of energy per point and 133.3 J/cm2 of fluency. An electromyography evaluation was performed before and after the irradiation, concomitantly with the exercise of lip protrusion maintained until the sensation of fatigue. Fatigue was evaluated by a median frequency using the electromyographic fatigue index. The amplitude of the signal was evaluated, examining the root mean square, and the values were normalized by the peak. The difference in amplitude between the upper and lower lips was also analyzed. All variables were compared before and after irradiation. Results No significant difference was found between the measures taken before and after irradiation. Conclusion Photobiomodulation with the parameters investigated in this study had no immediate effect on orbicular oris fatigue.
