RESUMO O uso comercial de híbridos de cebola é preferido pelos produtores. Em contrapartida, a produção de sementes híbridas de cebola é extremamente ineficiente. Isso se deve ao fato do uso de linhagens obtidas por sucessivas autofecundações assumindo o efeito de depressão por endogamia per se. Diante disso, faz-se necessário buscar novas alternativas capazes de reduzir o efeito de depressão por endogamia nas linhagens. Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar possíveis diferenças de polimorfismo e níveis de heterozigosidade de linhagens obtidas de plantas intercruzadas e autofecundadas. Foram utilizadas 12 populações de cebola pertencentes ao programa de melhoramento da Bayer (Granex, IPA-1, IPA-2 e IPA-3), obtidas por autofecundação de uma planta, entrecruzamento de duas plantas ou intercruzamento de três plantas. Três indivíduos de cada linhagem foram utilizados nas análises. As amplificações foram realizadas a partir do uso de 8 microsatélite primers com maior polimorfismo, de acordo com estudos de caracterização de germoplasma realizados pela CITA-Espanhola. A heterozigosidade geralmente diminui com a autofertilização e aumenta à medida que mais plantas são usadas no cruzamento. Os marcadores SSRs usados no presente estudo foram eficientes para detectar variabilidade nos diferentes backgrounds genéticos. Com os resultados obtidos, sugere-se realizar a obtenção de híbridos entre as diferentes combinações e analisar o desempenho per se das diferentes modalidades de obtenção de linhagens propostas na presente pesquisa.

ABSTRACT The commercial use of onion hybrids is preferred by producers. In contrast, the production of hybrid onion seeds is extremely inefficient. This is due to the use of lineages obtained by successive self-fertilizations assuming the effect of inbreeding depression per se. Therefore, it is necessary to understand new alternatives to reduce the effect of inbreeding depression in the strains. The objective of this study was to evaluate possible differences in polymorphism and levels of heterozygosity of strains obtained from intercrossed and self-fertilized plants. Twelve onion populations belonging to Bayer’s breeding program (Granex, IPA-1, IPA-2 and IPA-3) were used, obtained by self-fertilization of one plant, intercrossing of two plants or intercrossing of three plants. Three individuals from each strain were used in the analyzes. The amplifications were performed using 8 microsatellite primers with greater polymorphism, according to germplasm characterization studies carried out by CITA. Heterozygosity generally decreases with self-fertilization and increases as more plants are used in the cross. The SSR markers used in the present study were efficient in detecting variability in different genetic backgrounds. With the results obtained, it is suggested to carry out the obtaining of hybrids between the different combinations and to analyze the performance per se of the different modalities of obtaining strains proposed in the present research.

Abstract Mitigating reductions in vigor in onion seed production has been a great challenge to breeding programs. Therefore, we compared the effects of inbreeding depression among populations obtained from self-fertilization and crossbreeding with two and three plants. We evaluated eleven populations and three breeding methods (two and three-plant crossbreeding, and self-fertilization of one plant) and measured the characteristics related to seed yield (plant appearance, stem vigor, number of umbels, flowering uniformity, fruit setting, and resistance to Alternaria) from 2014 to 2015. Thirteen RAPD molecular markers were used to determine the genetic divergence among populations derived from different breeding methods. We found that inbreeding depression affects plant vigor in early generations that have greater heterozygosity. Three-plant crossbreeding results in greater seed yield in populations with low levels of inbreeding. The populations obtained from self-fertilization and two- and three-plant crossbreeding were genetically similar, demonstrating the efficiency of obtaining inbred lines without genetic divergence.

As características tecnológicas da fibra do algodoeiro são determinantes da qualidade de seus produtos e de sua remuneração. Este trabalho objetivou estimar a divergência genética entre acessos de algodoeiro e ordenar os melhores, com base em um índice de seleção combinando todas essas características de interesse. Foram avaliados 248 acessos de algodoeiro, empregando-se análise multivariada (distância de Mahalanobis e agrupamento de Tocher) e índice de seleção baseado em rank médio via metodologia de modelos mistos (REML/BLUP). A análise de agrupamento de Tocher permitiu a estruturação populacional dos acessos, resumindo-os em 14 grupos divergentes. As acurácias seletivas foram altas para todas as características avaliadas, variando de 0,89 a 0,94, indicando situação favorável à seleção. As correlações entre as seis variáveis apresentaram magnitudes moderadas a baixas, não sendo possível o melhoramento de uma característica, via seleção indireta, em outra. A seleção simultânea para as características de fibra, com base no índice de seleção de Mulamba e Mock, mostrou-se promissora. Os melhores acessos para as seis variáveis, simultaneamente, foram 4S180, C96480, Giza75, 196Lasani11, Brown Egyptian, Early Fluff 316, C268-80 e 207MG-82607.

Technological cotton fiber traits are essential for the quality and remuneration of its products. This study aimed to estimate the genetic divergence among cotton accessions and assort the best ones, based in a selection index combining all the important traits. A total of 248 cotton accessions were evaluated using multivariate analysis (Mahalanobis distance and Tocher grouping) and a selection index based in average rank via mixed models (REML/BLUP). The Tocher grouping analysis enabled the structuring of the accessions population by allocating them into 14 divergent groups. Selective accuracies were high for all traits, ranging from 0.89 to 0.94, indicating a favorable scenario for selection. Genetic correlations among the six traits were moderate to low, making impossible the breeding of a trait, via indirect selection, in another. The simultaneous selection for fiber traits, concerning the Mulamba and Mock selection index, showed to be promising. The best accessions for the six traits were simultaneously the 4S180, C96480, Giza75, 196Lasani11, Brown Egyptian, Early Fluff 316, C268-80 and 207MG-82607.

A vida de prateleira dos frutos de tomate pode ser extendida, seja empregando-se alelos mutantes que afetam o processo natural de amadurecimento, seja por meio de background genotípico favorável. O alelo alcobaça (alc) em heterozigose tem-se mostrado bastante eficiente no sentido de prolongar o período de conservação dos frutos em pós-colheita, sem que ocorra prejuízo na coloração. Avaliaram-se os efeitos do alelo alcobaça em heterozigose (alc+/alc) sobre as características de produção e qualidade pós–colheita de frutos de híbridos de tomateiro em diferentes backgrounds genotípicos. Foram avaliados três pares de híbridos, obtidos a partir de cruzamentos entre as linhagens quase isogênicas Flora-Dade (alc+/alc+) e TOM-559 (alc/alc) e três diferentes linhagens maternas (Stevens, NC8276 e Piedmont), correspondendo a uma combinação fatorial de duas constituições genotípicas no loco alcobaça (alc+/alc e alc+/alc+) vs três backgrounds genotípicos. Os frutos foram colhidos no estádio breaker de maturação e armazenados em câmara fria a 21ºC, durante 14 dias. Foram avaliadas características de produção e de qualidade. Independentemente da linhagem materna dos híbridos, o alelo alcobaça em heterozigose não interferiu nas características produção total, produção comercial, massa média por fruto, massa média por fruto comercial, formato do fruto e diâmetro da cicatriz peduncular dos frutos. O genótipo alc+/alc promoveu redução na taxa de perda de firmeza ao longo do tempo de armazenamento e retardou a taxa de evolução da coloração vermelha dos frutos. O genótipo alc+/alc contribuiu para aumentar a vida pós-colheita dos frutos de tomateiro, com efeitos similares em todas as constituições genotípicas utilizadas.

Post-harvest shelf life of tomato fruit may be increased by deploying mutant alleles which affect the natural ripening process and/or by a favorable genotypic background. Among the several ripening mutant genes, alcobaça (alc) has proved to be highly efficient in increasing shelf life of commercial tomato fruits, especially in heterozygosis, a state at which no limiting deleterious effects upon fruit color occur. The effects of heterozygosity in the alcobaça locus (alc+/alc) on yield and fruit quality traits of tomato hybrids with three genotypic backgrounds. We evaluated three pairs of hybrids obtained from crosses between the near-isogenic pollen source lines Flora-Dade (alc+/alc+) and TOM-559 (alc/alc), and three maternal lines (Stevens, NC-8276 and Piedmont). The six treatments were factorial combinations of two different status in the alc locus (alc+/alc and alc+/alc+) versus three different genotypic backgrounds (maternal lines). Fruits were harvested at the breaker stage of maturation and stored in shelves at 21ºC for 14 days. Yield and fruit quality traits were then evaluated. Regardless of the background, the alc allele in heterozygosis (alc+/alc) did not interfere with the total yield, commercial yield, average mass per fruit, average mass per commercial fruit, fruit shape, or with fruit peduncular scar diameter. The alc+/alc genotype reduced the rate of firmness loss and delayed evolution of the red color of the fruit, thus contributing to an increase of the post-harvest shelf life for all three genotypic backgrounds.

Dados da altura individual de dez plantas, obtidos de dez experimentos instalados em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições e quatro cultivares de algodoeiro herbáceo, foram estudados, para determinação do número mínimo de plantas/parcela, necessárias para caracterização da altura média de plantas de algodoeiro herbáceo. Foram estudados cinco tamanhos de amostra na parcela, cada uma, contendo 2, 4, 6, 8 e 10 plantas. Os coeficientes de variação experimental e amostral e as significâncias observadas nas análises de variâncias, indicaram que parcelas contendo seis ou mais plantas, permitiram boa caracterização do porte médio das variedades de algodoeiro testadas. Os resultados sugerem, portanto que, no processo de caracterização da altura média do algodoeiro herbáceo, a avaliação pode ser mais rápida, além de haver uma redução na mão-de-obra de coleta e manuseio dos dados, em decorrência de uma diminuição do número de plantas amostradas na parcela.

Data of measurements of ten individual plants height, from ten randomized blocks design experiments, with four replications and four cotton cultivars, were evaluated to determine the minimum number of plants per plot for characterization of the average height in cotton. To reach the purpose of this work, five sample sizes in the plot were studied, with 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 plants each. The coefficients of experimental and amostral variation, as well as the significative analysis of variances, indicated that plots with six or more plants allowed a good characterization of the plant height. The results showed that in the characterization of the height of the gossypium plants, the evaluating become fast and it can have a reduction in the labor during the collection and handling of the data, due to the reduction of the number of plants sampled in the plot.
