Abstract In the territory of Casa Branca village, in the Province of São Paulo, in the mid-19th century, donations of chapels’ property were the genesis of villages, later elevated to curated chapels and parishes. The article demonstrates the formation of the urban network, analyzing the relationship between the secular force and the Catholic Church in the territorial occupation, a process that involved the parishes of the region and instances of the civil and judiciary forces in the recognition and possession of chapels properties. The primary sources include the civil and ecclesiastical textual documentation of the region, spatialized in a Historical GIS that reconstitutes the territory of the application of the chapel of Rio do Peixe and its free and slave population. Resumo No termo da Vila de Casa Branca, na Província de São Paulo, em meados do século XIX, doações de patrimônios de capelas permitiram a gênese de povoações, posteriormente elevadas a capelas curadas e freguesias. O artigo demonstra a formação da rede urbana, analisando a relação entre o poder secular e a Igreja Católica na ocupação territorial, um processo que envolveu as paróquias da região e instâncias do poder civil e judiciário no reconhecimento e posse dos patrimônios de capelas. As fontes primárias analisadas são a documentação textual civil e eclesiástica da região, espacializada em um SIG histórico que reconstitui o território da aplicação da capela do Rio do Peixe e sua população livre e cativa. A elaboração de um SIG histórico permite analisar a relação entre as fazendas, a rede de caminhos, as capelas e os patrimônios existentes, revelando hierarquias sociais e redes de clientelismo em torno das capelas curadas, apontando para sua relevância no cotidiano dos coevos do século XIX. Resumo Na rede urbana polarizada pela vila de Casa Branca, na província de São Paulo, durante o século XIX, municípios nasceram a partir dos chamados patrimônios religiosos e compõem a porção nordeste do atual estado de São Paulo. Este trabalho propõe demonstrar a formação desse território e de alguns de seus espaços urbanos, por meio da análise da morfogênese e do traçado desses assentamentos, relacionados com a rede de caminhos e as rotas estruturantes. A investigação insere-se no âmbito de estudos da história urbana que utilizam ferramentas do SIG Histórico e trabalha com fontes textuais e cartográficas produzidas no decorrer do século XIX. Abstract In the urban network polarized by the villages of Casa Branca, in the Province of São Paulo, during the 19th century, municipalities were born from religious property donations and make up the northeast portion of the current State of São Paulo, in the border with Minas Gerais. This work proposes to demonstrate the formation of this territory and of some of its urban spaces, analyzing the morphogenesis and the urban routes of these settlements, related to the network of paths. The investigation falls within the scope of studies of History of Urbanization that use Historical GIS tools and works from textual and cartographic sources, during the 19th century. It seeks to contribute to studies on the genesis of small municipalities, creating thematic cartographies that pose questions about the formation of the network and urban spaces. RESUMO Na historiografia sobre o Brasil Império, os registros paroquiais de terras têm ganhado destaque devido ao seu potencial como fonte primária para estudos dos processos de ocupação do território e de urbanização. Neste artigo, é apresentada uma análise comparativa dos registros paroquiais de terras da freguesia de Caconde e do município de Campinas, produzidos entre 1854 e 1857, como decorrência direta da Lei de Terras, de 18 de setembro de 1850, que foi regulamentada pelo Decreto nº1.318, de 30 de janeiro de 1854. Os procedimentos metodológicos incluem a transcrição, sistematização e comparação dos dados das duas séries documentais, além do cruzamento com outras fontes do mesmo período. O artigo destaca a importância desta série documental primária, revelando especificidades fundiárias dos dois territórios e relacionando o léxico presente nas declarações aos processos de urbanização de cada localidade.

ABSTRACT In the Brazilian historiography on the Empire, the Parish Land Records have gained prominence due to its potential as a primary source for studies on the processes of territory occupation and urbanization. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the Parish Land Records of the parish of Caconde and those of the municipality of Campinas, produced between 1854 and 1857, as a direct result of Land Law No. 601 of September 18th, 1850, regulated by Decree No. 1,318 of January 30, 1854. Data from two document series were transcribed, summarized and compared, followed by cross-referencing with other sources from the same period. The article highlights the importance of this primary documental series, revealing land specificities of the two territories and relating the lexicon used in the declarations to urbanization processes unique to each locality.

RESUMO No processo de ocupação da hinterlândia da América portuguesa, os sertões do Rio Grande - localizados entre as capitanias de São Paulo e Minas Gerais e que têm como um de seus limites o curso d’água que lhes empresta o nome - foram redefinidos durante o século XVIII como espaço de disputas entre os governos civis e eclesiásticos de São Paulo, Minas Gerais e Goiás. Este trabalho pretende demonstrar o processo de constituição da rede urbana no território em disputa, onde os núcleos urbanos fundados nos interstícios das capitanias também foram instrumentos para consolidação do território e dos interesses geopolíticos lusos em contraposição aos espanhóis. A rede urbana nesse território é marcada pela presença de quilombos, pelos mecanismos do fisco do ouro e do controle dos caminhos, por meio dos registros, e pela forte presença da Igreja Católica como instrumento de ocupação dos sertões, por intermédio da ereção de capelas e da elevação de freguesias. Nesse contexto, destacamos algumas ações que visavam garantir a posse desse território, além da fundação da freguesia de N. Sra. da Conceição do Bom Sucesso do Rio Pardo (1775), evento importante nas disputas de fronteira e no povoamento desses sertões. Metodologicamente, este trabalho insere-se no campo disciplinar da história da urbanização e mobiliza uma variação de escalas geográficas. As fontes primárias incluem a cartografia histórica e cartas e ofícios dos governos civis e eclesiásticos.

ABSTRACT In the process of occupying the hinterland of Portuguese America, the hinterlands of Rio Grande - located between the Captaincies of São Paulo and Minas Gerais and bounded by the watercourse that lends its name - were being redefined, during the 18th century, as a space of disputes between the civil and ecclesiastical governments of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Goiás. This study aims at showing the process of constituting the urban network in the disputed territory, where the urban centers founded on the interstices of the captaincies were also instruments for consolidating the territory and the Portuguese geopolitical interests as opposed to the Spanish interests. The urban network in this territory presents singular characteristics, marked by the presence of quilombos, by the mechanisms of gold taxation and the control of trails by the customs barriers, by the strong presence of the Catholic Church as an instrument of occupation of the hinterlands, by the erection of chapels and the foundation of parishes. In this context, we highlight some actions to assert the possession of this territory in São Paulo and the foundation of the parish of N. Sra. da Conceição do Bom Sucesso in Rio Pardo (1775) as an important event in the border disputes and in the settlement of these hinterlands. Methodologically, this study is classified within the disciplinary field of the History of Urbanization and works with a variation of geographic scales. Primary sources include historical cartography and letters from civil and ecclesiastical governments.
