Resumo O coeficiente de reaeração superficial (K2), que representa a transferência de oxigênio na interface ar-água, é uma importante variável dos ecossistemas aquáticos. O K2 é influenciado por diversos fatores, entre eles as substâncias surfactantes, além disso, tal coeficiente é utilizado em modelos de qualidade da água, o que demanda a sua correta estimativa. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do surfactante Dodecil Sulfato de Sódio (SDS) sobre o K2. Em um reator cilíndrico com agitador mecânico tipo turbina, 15 experimentos de reaeração foram realizados com concentrações de SDS (0,0; 0,25; 0,5; 1,0 e 1,5 mMol L-1) e velocidades de rotação do agitador (25, 50 e 100 rpm). Em um canal hidráulico circular, 8 experimentos de reaeração foram realizados, em triplicata, com concentrações de SDS (0 e 1.5 mMol L-1) e níveis de agitação (Reynolds 4.500, 37.500, 49.200 e 54.000). No reator, independentemente da velocidade de rotação, o surfactante reduziu o K2 em 20%, devido à formação de um filme superficial na interface que dificultou a transferência do oxigênio, fenômeno conhecido como efeito barreira. No canal, a redução de K2 (aproximadamente 15%) ocorreu em maiores níveis de agitação da água. Na presença de surfactantes, e em baixos níveis de agitação, fenômenos que aumentam o K2 (i.e., efeito de Marangoni) coexistem com os que reduzem K2 (i.e., efeito barreira). Conclui-se que a presença de SDS em ambientes aquáticos deve ser considerada na estimativa do coeficiente de reaeração superficial, pois este surfactante pode contribuir para estimativas incertas do K2.

Abstract Surface reaeration coefficient (K2), which represents the transfer of oxygen at the air-water interface, is an important variable in aquatic ecosystems. K2 is influenced by several factors, including surfactants; furthermore, this coefficient is used in water-quality models, which requires its correct estimation. This study evaluated the effects of the surfactant Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) on K2 in two different experimental systems. In a cylindrical reactor with a turbine-type mechanical stirrer, 15 reaeration experiments were carried out with SDS concentrations of 0.0; 0.25; 0.5; 1.0 and 1.5 mMol L-1 and stirrer rotation velocities of 25, 50 and 100 rpm. In a circular hydraulic channel, 8 reaeration experiments were carried out, in triplicate, with SDS concentrations of 0 and 1.5 mMol L-1 and agitation levels of Reynolds 4,500, 37,500; 49,200 and 54,000. In the reactor, regardless of the rotation velocity, the surfactant reduced K2 by 20%, due to a superficial film formation at the interface that made oxygen transfer difficult, due to a phenomenon known as “barrier effect”. In the channel, an approximate K2 reduction of 15% occurred at higher levels of water agitation. In the presence of surfactants, and at low levels of agitation, phenomena that increase K2 (i.e., Marangoni effect) may coexist with those that reduce K2 (i.e., barrier effect). We concluded that the presence of SDS in aquatic environments should be considered when estimating the surface reaeration coefficient, because this surfactant can contribute to uncertain K2 estimation.

RESUMO A sonda solúvel flutuante (SSF) é considerada uma técnica de baixo custo para a estimativa do coeficiente de transferência de massa de oxigênio na interface ar-água (KL). Essa técnica se baseia no fato que KL pode ser correlacionado com a velocidade de dissolução do sólido solúvel (VS), uma vez que ambos os parâmetros são influenciados pela turbulência na superfície do escoamento. O objetivo do presente estudo consistiu em calibrar uma nova configuração da SSF. Experimentos de reaeração superficial e dissolução da sonda solúvel foram realizados em dois aparatos experimentais (tanque agitado por jatos e um canal hidráulico circular), de modo que diferentes níveis de turbulência foram produzidos. Os resultados mostraram forte correlação entre KL e VS; r = 0,953 para experimentos realizados no tanque e r = 0,895 para experimentos realizados no canal. A nova configuração da SSF forneceu razão KL.VS -1 crescente em função do número de Reynolds, indicando que a relação entre os dois parâmetros é dependente da turbulência. Conclui-se que a técnica SSF possui elevado potencial. Entretanto, para que se possa atribuir utilidade definitiva, verificações em cursos d’água naturais e em equipamentos com estrutura de turbulência diferentes das utilizadas neste estudo ainda são necessárias.

ABSTRACT The floating solid soluble probe is a low-cost technique for estimating the mass transfer coefficient of oxygen in the air-water interface (Ka). This technique is based on the fact that Ka can be correlated with the dissolution rate of a soluble solid (VS), since both parameters are influenced by the surface turbulence. The aim of this study was to calibrate a new floating solid soluble probe configuration. Surface reaeration experiments and dissolution of the soluble solid probe were performed in two experimental apparatus (jets stirred tank and a circular hydraulic channel), in which different levels of turbulence were produced. The results showed a strong correlation between Ka and VS, r = 0.953 for experiments performed on the tank and r = 0.895 for experiments performed on the channel. The new floating solid soluble probe configuration provided an increasing Ka.VS -1 ratio as a function of the Reynolds number, indicating that the relationship between these two parameters depends on the surface turbulence. We conclude that the floating solid soluble probe technique has a high potential, despite calibrations in natural water bodies and equipment with a turbulence structure different from those used in this study are still necessary to definitive utility.

RESUMO Análises integradas dos aspectos qualitativos e quantitativos de ambientes aquáticos robustecem a tomada de decisão, que se vincula ao gerenciamento dos recursos hídricos e à promoção dos serviços ecossistêmicos. Contudo, as possíveis vantagens desta integração ainda esbarram em aspectos básicos, como elevadas incertezas devido ao monitoramento parcial e não sincronizado entre vazões e concentrações. A escassez de dados tem limitado a fiel representação mais acurada de um regime hidrológico, este sujeito aos potenciais efeitos de uso de solo e do tamanho das bacias de drenagem. O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi apresentar uma discussão inicial sobre as vantagens da análise integrada de dados quali-quantitativos dos recursos hídricos. Para isso, em diferentes regimes de vazões específicas (L.s-1.km-2), foram avaliadas cargas de fósforo total (FT, t.dia-1.km-2) e coliformes termotolerantes (CT, UFC.dia-1.km-2) em rios com diferentes áreas de drenagem (27-26.500 km2) e usos do solo. Tais cargas foram comparadas com as cargas específicas admissíveis para essas variáveis, estimadas com base em vazões médias de longo período e padrões de qualidade. Dessa forma, a partir da compilação de dados de 2001-2013, buscou-se contribuir para a análise quali-quantitativa das águas superficiais, focando a discussão dos resultados em limiares críticos de duração e cargas e vazões críticas. Os resultados evidenciaram a existência de significativos intervalos de tempo com conflitos entre as cargas específicas admissíveis e observadas. Essa incompatibilidade variou entre 10 e 100% da duração do regime para o FT, e entre 25 e 100% para os CT, com situação mais crítica observada nos rios com menores áreas de drenagem. As cargas críticas variaram entre 1 10 -4 e 8 10-3 t.dia-1.km-2 (FT) e 1 10 -2 e 1 10-1 UFC.dia-1.km-2 (CT). Embora com um número de dados relativamente limitado (Ntotal=1.402), as expressivas variações das vazões e das cargas críticas evidenciam a necessidade de uma reflexão sobre como essa dinâmica afetaria a metodologia tradicional para estimativa de vazões ecológicas, hoje baseada em abordagem, quase exclusivamente, quantitativa.

ABSTRACT Integrated analyses of the qualitative and quantitative aspects of aquatic ecosystems play an important role in decision making, which is linked to water resources management and promotion of ecosystem services. However, the possible advantages of such integration are still hampered by basic aspects, such as high uncertainties due to the partial and non-synchronized monitoring of discharges and observed concentrations of water quality variables. The lack of data has been limiting the adequate representation of a more accurate hydrological regime, which is in turn possibly affected by the potential effects of land use and size of drainage areas. The aim of this research was to discuss the advantages of the integrated analysis of qualitative and quantitative data from water bodies. Under different specific discharge regimes (L.s -1.km-2), we assessed the total phosphorus (TP, t.day-1 .km-2) and thermotolerant coliforms’ (TC, CFU.day-1.km -2) specific loads in rivers with different drainage areas (27-26,500 km 2) and land uses. We compared such loads with the admissible specific loads for these variables, which were estimated based on long-term average discharges and water quality guidelines (i.e., Brazilian environmental standards). Based on data from 2001-2013, we sought to contribute to the qualitative and quantitative analysis of surface waters, focusing on the discussion of the results on critical thresholds of duration and critical loads and discharges. The results showed the existence of significant time intervals with conflicts between the specific admissible and observed loads. This non-compliance varied between 10 and 100% of the duration of the regime for TP, and between 25 and 100% for TC, with a more critical situation observed in rivers with smaller drainage areas. The critical loads ranged from 1 10-4 to 8 10-3 t.day-1.km-2 (TP) and 1 10-2 to 1 10-1 CFU.day-1.km-2 (TC). Although a relatively limited dataset was considered (total N=1,402), the significant variations in discharges and critical loads highlighted the need for considering how these dynamics would affect the traditional methodology for estimating ecological flows, whose current approach is almost exclusively quantitative.

RESUMO O oxigênio dissolvido (OD) é um dos principais parâmetros de qualidade da água. O equilíbrio da concentração de OD em um corpo d´água pode ser alterado por fenômenos interfaciais como a reaeração e a dissipação de oxigênio, os quais podem ser representados pelos coeficientes K2 e KD, respectivamente. Poucos estudos correlacionaram conjuntamente K2 e KD a parâmetros físicos e hidráulicos do escoamento. Este trabalho investigou o comportamento desses coeficientes em diferentes condições hidráulicas do escoamento, bem como desenvolveu equações semi-empíricas capazes de relacionar ambos coeficientes. Os testes de reaeração e de dissipação foram conduzidos em um canal hidráulico circular com velocidade do escoamento variando de 0,20 a 0,79 m.s-1 e a profundidade de 0,09 a 0,15 m. As estimativas de K2 e KD foram realizadas com o uso do método da regressão não linear. As equações semi-empíricas foram obtidas com base na análise dimensional clássica e na análise de regressão exponencial multiparamétrica. A comparação entre os coeficientes medidos e estimados produziu coeficientes de determinação (R2) para a dissipação e reaeração de 0,940 e 0,844, respectivamente. KD foi maior do que K2 para todos os níveis de turbulência utilizados no canal hidráulico. Uma estimativa obtida pela relação entre as equações semi-empíricas indica que a transferência de oxigênio no sentido água-ar (dissipação) é aproximadamente duas vezes mais rápida do que a transferência no sentido ar-água (reaeração).

ABSTRACT Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a key parameter in water quality. The DO concentration in a water body can be changed by interfacial phenomena such as reaeration and oxygen dissipation, which can be represented by the coefficients K2 and KD, respectively. Few studies have jointly correlated K2 and KD with physical and hydraulic parameters of the channel. The present work investigated the behavior of these coefficients over a range of hydraulic conditions, and developed semi-empirical equations capable of relating both coefficients. Reaeration and DO dissipation tests were conducted in a circular hydraulic channel with flow velocity ranging from 0.20 to 0.79 m.s-1 and depth ranging from 0.09 to 0.15 m. Estimates of K2 and KD were performed using the non-linear regression method. Semi-empirical equations were obtained based on classical dimensional analysis and multiple regression analysis. The comparison between measured and estimated coefficients yielded R2 for reaeration and dissipation of 0.940 and 0.844, respectively. KD was higher than K2 for all turbulence levels applied at the hydraulic channel. An estimate obtained by the relation between the semi-empirical equations indicates that the transfer of oxygen in the water-air direction (dissipation) is approximately twice as fast as the transfer in the air-water direction (reaeration).
