A podridão do colmo, causada por Colletotrichum graminicola, é uma das mais severas doenças da cultura do milho no Brasil, principalmente se ocorrer após a fase de florescimento, por causar perdas significativas na produtividade. A melhor alternativa para o controle da doença é a utilização de cultivares geneticamente resistentes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a incidência da podridão de colmo em híbridos comerciais de milho, tendo em vista a pouca disponibilidade de informações que permitam a utilização da resistência genética como estratégia para o controle desta doença. Foram avaliados 18 híbridos comerciais de milho, em três ensaios conduzidos nos anos de 2005, 2006 e 2007 na área experimental da Embrapa Milho e Sorgo, sob condições de inóculo natural. Em cada parcela foram coletados fragmentos do colmo de três plantas, sendo: o segundo entrenó acima do solo, o entrenó de inserção da espiga e o entrenó localizado abaixo do pendão. Quatro fragmentos de cada parte foram desinfestados e transferidos para placas de Petri contendo meio de farinha de aveia - ágar (FAA). As placas foram mantidas em câmara de incubação sob luz fluorescente contínua à temperatura de 25 ºC, seguindo-se a identificação e quantificação do patógeno após três a quatro dias de incubação. As menores incidências (abaixo de 30%) foram observadas nos híbridos BR201 e BR206 e a maior incidência (acima de 60%) detectada no híbrido BRS1010. O patógeno foi detectado em todos os segmentos do colmo analisados, predominando, entretanto, no terço médio superior para a maioria dos híbridos avaliados. Apesar da variação observada entre os genótipos quanto à incidência da antracnose no colmo, nenhum híbrido pôde ser considerado como de altamente resistente ao patógeno.

Stalk rot (Colletotrichum graminicola) is one of the most serious disease affecting maize crop in Brazil, especially after the flowering phase, when yield losses can reach significant levels. The use of genetically resistant cultivars is the most efficient strategy to control the disease. The aim of this work was to evaluate the incidence of stalk rot in maize commercial hybrids sinde there is scarce information to allow the use of genetic resistance as a strategy to control this disease. Eighteen maize commercial hybrids were evaluated in 2005, 2006, and 2007 in the experimental area of EMBRAPA Maize and Sorghum Research Center Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, under conditions of natural infection. From each plot, three stalk segments of three plants were sampled: the second internode above the soil line, the internode of ear insertion, and the internode right bellow the tassel. Four tissue fragments of each stalk segment were surface sterilized and transferred to oatmeal agar plates, which were incubated under continuous fluorescent light at 25ºC. Pathogen identification and quantification were performed after three to four days of incubation. The hybrids BR201 and BR206 showed the lowest infection level (below 30%) whereas the highest incidence (above 60%) was observed for the hybrid BRS1010. The pathogen was observed in all analyzed stalk segments, but was most frequently isolated from the internode right below the tassel. No evaluated hybrid could be considered to have high resistance to the pathogen.

Foi objetivo deste trabalho caracterizar a população de Colletotrichum sublineolum Henn. por meio da avaliação da virulência de 289 isolados monospóricos do patógeno. Foram utilizadas como diferenciadoras 10 linhagens elites do programa de melhoramento genético de sorgo da Embrapa Milho e Sorgo. Os isolados de C. sublineolum foram obtidos de folhas de sorgo provenientes de Palmeira de Goiás e Goiânia, GO, Sete Lagoas, Ipiaçu e Uberlândia, MG, e Jardinópolis, SP e designados de acordo com um sistema binário de classificação de raças. As populações foram também caracterizadas quanto à diversidade fenotípica, por meio de índices de Shannon, de Gleason e de Simpson, e de um índice de complexidade, e quanto a sua distribuição e freqüência nas seis localidades. Somente a raça 31.04 foi encontrada nos seis locais avaliados e foi a raça mais freqüente em Uberlândia, Ipiaçu e Palmeira de Goiás. A raça mais complexa, 31.31, foi a mais freqüente em Sete Lagoas e Goiânia e não foi observada somente em Palmeira de Goiás. Verificou-se que as raças mais freqüentes em cada localidade apresentaram-se, em sua maioria, bem distribuídas nas seis regiões avaliadas. O local com maior diversidade fenotípica foi Jardinópolis, de acordo com os índices de Shannon, Simpson e Gleason. O maior índice de complexidade de raças foi encontrado em Sete Lagoas e Goiânia, seguidas por Jardinópolis, Ipiaçu, Uberlândia e Palmeira de Goiás, respectivamente. Houve correlação entre os índices de Shannon e Gleason, mas não entre os índices de diversidade e de complexidade.

The objective of this work was to characterize Colletotrichum sublineolum Henn. population by evaluating virulence of 289 single spore isolates of the pathogen in sorghum 10 elite lines of the breeding program of Embrapa Maize and Sorghum Research Center, utilized as differentials. Isolates were obtained of sorghum leaves from Palmeira de Goiás and Goiânia, GO, Sete Lagoas, Ipiaçu and Uberlândia, MG, and Jardinópolis, SP and designated according to a binary system of classification. Populations were also characterized for phenotypic diversity according to the Shannon, Gleason and Simpson indexes, a complexity index, and according to their frequency and distribution. Race 31.04 was present in all six locations and was the predominant phenotype in Uberlândia, Ipiaçú, and Palmeira de Goiás. The complex race 31.31, was the most frequent in Sete Lagoas and Goiânia and was not observed only in Palmeira de Goiás. The most frequent races were also the ones with a uniform distribution throughout the six locations. The highest phenotypic diversity, according to the Shannon, Simpson and Gleason indexes, was observed in Jardinópolis. The highest complexity index was found in Sete Lagoas and Goiânia, followed by the indexes of Jardinópolis, Ipiaçu, Uberlândia and Palmeira de Goiás, respectively. A significant correlation between Shannon and Gleason indexes was observed. On the other hand, diversity and complexity indexes were not significantly correlated.

Uma bactéria identificada como Pantoea ananatis foi recentemente isolada de lesões jovens da doença mancha branca do milho de plantas naturalmente infectadas. Esta bateria reproduziu sintomas semelhantes aos da doença quando inoculada em plantas de milho em casa de vegetação. Estudos anteriores realizados por outros autores demonstraram que o controle desta doença em condições de campo foi obtido pelo uso de fungicidas, principalmente o Mancozeb, nas fases iniciais de seu desenvolvimento. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a freqüência de isolamento da bactéria P. ananatis a partir de plantas infectadas coletadas na região de Londrina, Estado do Paraná, e reproduzir sintomas da doença através de inoculações artificiais em plantas de milho em casa de vegetação. Utilizando os produtos químicos testados anteriormente por outros autores para o controle desta doença a campo, foi também objetivo deste trabalho avaliar o potencial destes produtos na inibição da bactéria tanto em condições de laboratório como em condições de infecção natural. Os resultados mostraram que P. ananatis foi isolada em 40% das lesões jovens coletadas a campo e quando inoculada em casa de vegetação sob condições controladas reproduziu sintomas semelhantes aos observados a campo. Entre os produtos químicos testados, o fungicida Mancozeb mostrou-se eficiente no controle da doença a campo, em concordância com os relatos anteriores. Este produto inibiu completamente o crescimento da bactéria em laboratório, explicando os resultados obtidos a campo. Os demais produtos não foram eficientes no controle a campo e eles também não inibiram a bactéria em laboratório. Estes resultados representam evidências adicionais de que a bactéria P. ananatis é o agente causal da doença mancha branca do milho.

A bacterium identified as Pantoea ananatis was recently isolated from young lesions of the disease maize white spot from infected plants in the field. This bacterium produced similar symptoms of the disease when inoculated on maize plants in greenhouse. Previous studies carried out by other authors demonstrated that the control of this disease in field conditions has been achieved through the use of fungicides mainly with the Mancozeb in the initial phases of its development. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of isolation of P. ananatis from infected plants in the region of "Londrina, Paraná State" and to reproduce symptoms of the disease through artificial inoculation of maize plants in greenhouse. Using the chemical products tested previously by other authors for the control of this disease in the field, it was also objective of this work to evaluate the potential of these products to inhibit the bacterium, at both in laboratory and in condition of natural infection. The results showed that P. ananatis was successfully isolated from 40% of the young lesions collected in the field and when inoculated in greenhouse (controlled conditions), it reproduced symptoms similar to what was observed in the field. Among the tested chemical products, the fungicide Mancozeb was the best in the control of the disease under field conditions, in agreement with previous reports. This product inhibited completely the bacterium in laboratory, explaining the results found in the field. The others products were not efficient to control the disease and they did not also inhibit the bacterium in laboratory. The results represent additional evidences that the bacterium P. ananatis is the causal agent of the maize white spot disease.
