Resumo Apresentamos uma chave para a identificação e uma lista com detalhes das licófitas e samambaias da Região Geográfica Imediata de São Luís, Estado do Maranhão, que possui características ecotonais da Floresta Amazônica, Cerrado e Vegetação Litorânea. Os dados foram coletados mensalmente entre abril de 2020 e setembro de 2022 nos 13 municípios dessa região. Foram identificadas 64 espécies, incluindo 61 espécies de samambaias, em 18 famílias e 38 gêneros, e três espécies de licófitas, em dois gêneros e uma família. As famílias mais representativas foram Pteridaceae (18 espécies) e Polypodiaceae (nove espécies). O substrato de ocorrência mais registrado foi o terrestre com 35 espécies (54,6%), seguido do epifítico com 15 espécies (23,4%), aquático com quatro espécies (6,2%), rupícola com três espécies (4,6%) e hemiepifítico com duas espécies (3,1%). Cinco espécies (7,8%) apresentaram mais de uma forma de vida. Este estudo amplia o conhecimento sobre a distribuição geográfica de espécies de samambaias e licófitas na região central do norte do Maranhão, no Nordeste do Brasil, que até então possuía várias lacunas de amostragem. Abstract We present a key to identify and an annotated list of lycophytes and ferns of the Immediate Geographical Region of São Luís, Maranhão State, which has ecotonal characteristics of Amazonian Forest, Cerrado, and Coastal Vegetation. Specimens were collected monthly between April 2020 and September 2022 in the 13 municipalities of this region. A total of 64 species were identified, including 61 species of ferns, in 18 families and 38 genera, and three species of lycophytes, in two genera and one family. The most representative families were Pteridaceae (18 species) and Polypodiaceae (nine species). The most recorded substrate of occurrence was terrestrial with 35 species (54.6%), followed by epiphytic with 15 species (23.4%), aquatic with four species (6.2%), rupicolous with three species (4.6%), and hemiepiphytic with two species (3.1%). Five species (7.8%) had more than one life form. This study expands the knowledge about the geographic distribution of fern and lycophyte species in the central region of Northern Maranhão, in Northeastern Brazil, which until now had several sampling gaps. RESUMO Este trabalho apresenta uma lista das espécies de Thelypteridaceae que ocorrem no Estado do Maranhão, assim como fornece chave de identificação, descrições e comentários para as espécies da família. Para isso, foram compilados os dados de trabalhos florísticos já publicados para o Estado do Maranhão e novas expedições de campo foram realizadas entre os anos de 2017 e 2023. ABSTRACT This work presents a list of Thelypteridaceae species occurring in the State of Maranhão, as well as provides an identification key, descriptions and comments for the species of the family. Resumo É apresentado o tratamento florístico-taxonômico das licófitas do Parque Nacional Nascentes do Rio Parnaíba (PNNRP), uma Unidade de Conservação (UC) situada na porção norte do Cerrado brasileiro, nos limites dos estados do Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí e Bahia. O Parque é considerado a maior área de proteção integral do Cerrado e está localizado em uma região que está perdendo rapidamente sua cobertura nativa devido à expansão do agronegócio na área. Apesar disso, a área não possui estudos focando na diversidade vegetal. Este tratamento inclui chaves para a identificação de gêneros e espécies, ilustrações, descrições, comentários sobre características diagnósticas e ecológicas, bem como a distribuição geográfica das espécies. Na área de estudo, foram registradas oito espécies distribuídas em quatro gêneros, Lycopodiella, Palhinhaea, Pseudolycopodiella e Selaginella. Abstract The floristic-taxonomic treatment of lycophytes from the Parque Nacional das Nascentes do Rio Parnaiba (PNNRP), a protected area in the northern portion of the Brazilian Cerrado, within the boundaries of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia, is presented. The Park is considered the largest full protection area of the Cerrado and is located in a region that is rapidly losing its native coverage due to the expansion of agribusiness. Despite this, the area has no studies focusing on plant diversity. This treatment includes keys for the identification of genera and species, descriptions, comments on diagnostic and ecological characteristics, geographical distribution of the species and illustrations. Eight species were recorded in the study area, distributed in four genera: Lycopodiella, Palhinhaea, Pseudolycopodiella and Selaginella. Resumo O presente trabalho trata do estudo florístico de Selaginella no Maranhão. O levantamento de espécies foi realizado com base em coletas de campo realizadas entre abril de 2006 e fevereiro de 2023 e em análise de espécimes coletados no Maranhão e depositadas nos herbários CCAA, HBRA, MG e SLUI. Foram identificadas 10 espécies: Selaginella conduplicata, S. convoluta, S. erythropus, S. flagellata, S. gynostachya S. marginata, S. minima, S. radiata, S. simplex e S. sulcata. Relatamos a primeira ocorrência de S. gynostachya para o Maranhão e também para o domínio do Cerrado Brasileiro. Até então essa espécie era registrada somente em áreas amazônicas. Abstract This work is a floristic study of Selaginella in Maranhão. The species survey is based on collections from fieldwork conducted between April 2006 and February 2023 and specimens from Maranhão deposited at the CCAA, HBRA, MG, and SLUI herbaria. Ten species were identified: Selaginella conduplicata, S. convoluta, S. erythropus, S. flagellata, S. gynostachya S. marginata, S. minima, S. radiata, S. simplex, and S. sulcata. We report the first record of S. gynostachya for Maranhão and the Cerrado domain in Brazil. Until now, this species was only known from areas of Amazonia. We provide a map with records, an identification key, and comments about the identification and geographic distribution of Selaginella species in Maranhão state. Resumo: No Brasil o número de inventários florísticos envolvendo samambaias e licófitas no domínio Cerrado são consideráveis. Entretanto, a maior parte dessa diversidade é registrada para os estados da região Centro-Oeste. Além do domínio Cerrado, o território do estado do Maranhão inclui parte da Amazônia e uma pequena porção da Caatinga. No entanto, para este estado, samambaias e licófitas são pouco amostradas nos estudos florísticos e os dados relacionados à diversidade dessas espécies são insuficientes. Devido à escassez de dados sobre esses grupos, a realização de inventários florísticos no estado é de extrema importância, principalmente em unidades de conservação que contêm vegetação regional similar à vegetação primária. Assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi realizar um inventário florístico das espécies de samambaias e licófitas no Parque Nacional da Chapada das Mesas. Nós identificamos 86 espécies: 69 espécies de samambaias, distribuídas em 35 gêneros e 17 famílias; e 17 espécies de licófitas, distribuídas em cinco gêneros e três famílias. Dentre as espécies identificadas, cinco são novos registros para a região Nordeste do Brasil, vinte e uma são novos registros para o Estado do Maranhão e onze são novos registros para o Cerrado; até agora, esses foram registrados apenas para a Amazônia e a Mata Atlântica. As famílias mais representativas foram Pteridaceae com 14 espécies, Selaginellaceae com 12 espécies, Thelypteridaceae com 11 espécies e Anemiaceae, Hymenophyllaceae e Dryopteridaceae com seis espécies cada. A forma de vida rupícola foi predominante. Os novos registros de ocorrência para o Cerrado, Nordeste e Maranhão evidenciam que a pesquisa florística de samambaias e licófitas ainda é insuficiente nessas áreas, sendo necessário um maior esforço amostral para aumentar o conhecimento em relação a diversidade dessas plantas.

Abstract: In Brazil, the number of floristic inventories involving ferns and lycophytes in the Cerrado domain is considerable. However, most of the diversity is recorded for states in the Central-West Region. In addition to the Cerrado domain, Maranhão State contains part of Amazonia and a small portion of the Caatinga. However, for this state, ferns and lycophytes are poorly sampled in floristic studies and data related to the diversity of these species are insufficient. Due to the scarcity of data about these groups, conducting floristic inventories in the state is extremely important, mainly in protected areas that contain regional vegetation near primary vegetation. Thus, the objective of the present study was to conduct a floristic inventory of the fern and lycophyte species in Chapada das Mesas National Park. We identified 86 species: 69 species of ferns, distributed in 35 genera and 17 families; and 17 species of lycophytes, distributed in five genera and three families. Among the species identified, five are new records for the Northeast Region of Brazil, twenty-one are new records for Maranhão State and eleven are new records for the Cerrado; until now, these were only recorded for Amazonia and the Atlantic Forest. The most representative families were Pteridaceae with 14 species, Selaginellaceae with 12 species, Thelypteridaceae with 11 species, and Anemiaceae, Hymenophyllaceae and Dryopteridaceae with six species each. The rupicolous life form was predominant. The new occurrence records for the Cerrado, Northeast Region and Maranhão are evidence that floristic research of ferns and lycophytes is still insufficient in these areas, and a greater sampling effort is needed to increase what is known about the diversity of these plants.

Resumo: As recentes determinações do governo Brasileiro indicam que atividades econômicas impactantes para os manguezais, particularmente a carcinocultura, serão incentivadas num futuro próximo. Alterações no Plano de Ação Nacional e em outros instrumentos legais, que parcialmente protegiam os manguezais, fragilizaram ainda mais os meios legais para proteção dessas áreas. Essas mudanças fazem o Brasil seguir na contra-mão da demanda global pela conservação dos manguezais e dos objetivos de desenvolvimento sustentável traçados pela Organização das Nações Unidas, bem como das metas de Aichi para a biodiversidade. Consequentemente, a iminente perda dos ecossistemas de manguezais impactará negativamente o padrão de vida dos Brasileiros que vivem em áreas costeiras.

Abstract: Recent statements from the Brazilian federal government indicate that impacting economic activities, particularly commercial shrimp farming, are being encouraged in mangrove areas in the near future. Alterations of the National Action Plan and legal instruments that partially protected mangrove ecosystems have created an even weaker legal framework than previously existed. Such changes are leading Brazil far from the global call to conserve mangroves and from the Aichi targets and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Unfortunately, the loss of mangrove ecosystems and their ecosystem services will negatively impact living standards for Brazilians in coastal areas.

Resumo: Embora as pesquisas envolvendo o estudo de licófitas e samambaias tenham crescido nos últimos anos, o Maranhão ainda é um dos Estados do Nordeste com sua flora menos conhecida em virtude, principalmente, da baixa amostragem. O Parque Nacional (PARNA) Chapada das Mesas, apesar de tratar-se de uma unidade de conservação protegida no Cerrado maranhense e abrigar fitofisionomias que são propícias à diversidade florística, ainda não possui estudos sobre a diversidade florística de licófitas. Este estudo teve como objetivo geral fazer um inventário e estudo florístico e taxonômico de licófitas para o PARNA Chapada das Mesas. Foram realizadas três expedições para coletas de material entre março 2017 e junho 2018 com duração de três dias cada. Na área de estudo foram identificadas as três famílias de licófitas representadas por três gêneros e seis espécies. A família com maior diversidade foi Selaginellaceae com quatro espécies Selaginella conduplicata, S. erythropus, S. radiata e S. simplex. As outras duas, Isoëtaceae e Lycopodiaceae com uma espécie cada, Isoëtes sp., e Palhinhaea cernua. Nesse estudo também são relatados dois novos registros para o domínio fitogeográfico do Cerrado, S. conduplicata e S. radiata, sendo a primeira um novo registro para o Estado do Maranhão. A maioria dos espécimes foi encontrada em ambientes de matas ciliares crescendo sobre afloramento rochoso.

Abstract: Despite an increase in studies involving lycophytes and ferns in recent years, Maranhão is still one of the northeastern states with a poorly known flora, mainly due to low sampling. For Chapada das Mesas National Park, a protected conservation unit in the Cerrado maranhense with phytophysiognomies that favor floristic diversity, there are no floristic studies about lycophytes. This study aimed to conduct the floristic inventory and taxonomic study of lycophytes in Chapada das Mesas National Park. Three collection expeditions, of three days each, were made between March 2017 and June 2018. Three families of lycophytes represented by three genera and six species were identified in the study area. The most diverse family was Selaginellaceae with four species: Selaginella conduplicata, S. erythropus (Mart.) Spring, S. radiata (Aubl.) Baker and S. simplex Baker. The other two families, Isoëtaceae and Lycopodiaceae, had one species each, Isoëtes sp. and Palhinhaea cernua (L.) Franco & Vasc. This study also reports two new record for the Brazilian Cerrado phytogeographic domain, S. conduplicate and S. radiata, of which the first is a new record for Maranhão State. Most specimens were found in riparian forest on rocky outcrops.

Resumo Neste trabalho apresentamos um inventário de Samambaias e Licófitas ocorrentes em remanescentes da Amazônia Maranhense. Os dados aqui presentes são resultados de coletas entre os anos de 2010-2011 e 2016-2019 em vários municípios do Maranhão inseridos nesta porção amazônica do estado. Registrou-se um total de 64 espécies de Samambaias e Licófitas, distribuídos em 36 gêneros e 18 famílias. Vinte e quatro espécies são novas ocorrências para o Maranhão, com 4 destas relatadas pela primeira vez para a região Nordeste do Brasil. A família mais representativa foi Pteridaceae (23 espécies), seguida por Polypodiaceae (7 espécies). As formas de vida predominantes foram terrícolas com 37 espécies e epífitas com 15 espécies, sendo este número de epífitas o maior registrado em um inventário de Samambaias e Licófitas do Maranhão. Estes dados reforçam a necessidade de coletas destes grupos de plantas na Amazônia Maranhense de forma a caracterizar amplamente a flora de Samambaias e Licófitas do Maranhão.

Abstract This work is an inventory of ferns and lycophytes of remnants in Amazônia Maranhense. The data provided are the results of collections made from 2010-2011 and 2016-2019 in various municipalities of Maranhão in the Amazonian part of the state. Sixty-four species of ferns and lycophytes, in 36 genera and 18 families, were recorded. Of these, 24 species are new records for Maranhão and four are new records for the Northeast Region of Brazil. The most representative family was Pteridaceae (23 species), followed by Polypodiaceae (7 species). The predominant life forms were terrestrial (37 species) and epiphytic (15 species); the latter is the highest number of epiphytic species recorded for a fern and lycophyte inventory in Maranhão. The data support the need for collecting ferns and lycophytes in Amazônia Maranhense to better understand the flora of these groups in the state.

O presente estudo refere-se às espécies de licófitas e monilófitas ocorrentes nas Zonas de Preservação da Vida Silvestre da Usina Hidroelétrica de Tucuruí, Estado do Pará, Brasil. A área de estudo localiza-se na região sudeste do Pará, com cerca de 29.700 hectares, composta, predominantemente, por floresta ombrófila aberta. Os dados obtidos demonstraram a ocorrência de 18 famílias, 37 gêneros e 82 espécies. A família com maior riqueza de espécies é Pteridaceae (21 spp.) e o gênero mais representativo é Adiantum com 14 espécies. Três espécies são novas referências para o Pará: Didymoglossum ovale, Danaea nodosa e Pecluma hygrometrica. Além disso, duas espécies novas foram identificados, uma delas já descrita, Thyelypteris amazonica. A outra espécie pertence a Adiantum e será publicada em breve. A riqueza florística da área, associada com as novidades taxonômicas, atesta a sua importância biológica e aponta para a necessidade de aumentar os esforços em pesquisa e conservação da área estudada.

This work presents a survey of lycophytes and monilophytes in the Conservation Unit named Zonas de Preservação da Vida Silvestre da Usina Hidrelétrica de Tucuruí, Pará State, Brazil. This Conservation Unit is located at southeastern Pará and comprises about 29,700 ha, composed mainly of tropical rainforest. Our results recorded 18 families, 37 genera and 82 species. The richest family is Pteridaceae, with 21 species, and Adiantum is the richest genus, with 14 species. Three species are new records for Pará State: Didymoglossum ovale, Danaea nodosa, and Pecluma hygrometrica. Furthermore, two new species were identified. One has already been described, Thyelypteris amazonica. The other new species belongs to the genus Adiantum and shall be published soon. The floristic richness of the area, associated with the taxonomic novelties, attests for its biological importance and for the necessity of increasing the efforts on research and conservation of the study area.
