A produção de grãos nos Cerrados com uso de altos níveis de tecnologia é resultante da adaptação genética da soja (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) às baixas latitudes. A produção de grãos nessa região é superior em zonas de latitude mais elevada, mas predominam as cultivares tardias; isso implica limitadas oportunidades de planejamento para o sistema de produção de grãos. A soja `BRS Carla' representa uma opção para atender à demanda dos produtores. Além do ciclo semelhante ao da `BR-40' (Itiquira), apresenta maior produtividade, altura da planta satisfatória à colheita mecanizada, e resistência às principais doenças, em especial ao cancro-da-haste (Diaporthe phaseolorum f.sp. meridionalis).

Modern soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) production in the Brazilian Savannahs is the result of crop adaptation to the low latitudes of the tropics. Grain yield in this region is higher than in the traditional, high latitude zones of cultivation. Late maturity, however, predominates among the recommended cultivars; this implies limited opportunity for suitable production system planning. The `BRS Carla' cultivar is an alternative to supply the growers' demand. Besides belonging to same maturity group of `BR-40' (Itiquira), its high yielding and its plant height are adequate to combined harvest, and it is resistant to the main diseases, especially to the stem canker (Diaporthe phaseolorum f.sp. meridionalis).
