This study synthesized mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) using PEBAX® MH-1657 and ZIF-67 with varying particle concentrations (1, 3, and 5 wt%) to assess permeability and selectivity. ZIF-67 nanoparticles were prepared using the solvothermal method with methanol and characterized. Permeation tests were conducted at 10 and 15 bar using N2 and CO2. The analysis revealed ZIF-67 particles with an approximate diameter of 280 nm and confirmed characteristic sodalite peaks. The ideal CO2/N2 selectivity reached 67 (CO2 permeability = 132 ± 3.5 Barrer) at 15 bar. The impact of ZIF-67 varied with pressure and composition; at 10 bar, CO2/N2 selectivity decreased compared to pure PEBAX®; however, at 15 bar, the 1 wt% ZIF-67 membrane exhibited superior selectivity, surpassing Robeson's upper bound. The results indicate that ZIF-67 enhances the permeability and selectivity of PEBAX®, with superior performance observed at lower concentrations. Abstract The objective of this work was to produce Pebax®/polydopamine (PDA) blends and apply these blends to produce membranes for gas separation. Flat sheet membranes were tested for gas permeation, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), wide angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results show an optimal concentration of dopamine hydrochloride that produces the best results (��=100, P=114 Barrer). DSC and WAXD results indicate that polydopamine influences the crystallization of Pebax®, reducing the melting and crystallization temperatures of PA blocks and increasing the melting temperature of PEO blocks. The incorporation of PDA decreases gas permeability and increases gas selectivity. The decrease in permeability indicates that the presence of polydopamine reduces the diffusion coefficient of Pebax® by reducing the segmental mobility of PEO blocks and possibly the fraction free volume. Compared to the trade-off, Pebax®/PDA membranes surpasses the upperbound for CO2/N2 separation. Abstract The aim of this work was to study the effect of different variables in the morphology and water vapor permeation of asymmetric membranes. Different from other works on vapor induced phase inversion this work focus on the formation of a dense skin capable of separating small molecules like gases and on the transport properties of water vapor instead of liquid water. It also correlates the morphologies with the permeability. The results show that higher polymer concentrations lead to denser skin and lower permeability. Water vapor transmission rates varied from 30 to 48 g/m2.h depending on membrane morphology. They also show that for membranes with the same type of skin layer the permeability depends on the sub-layer. Finally, the results suggest that different mechanisms were responsible for the formation of the membranes.

Abstract This study investigated the effects of low concentrations of sericin (≤ 1.5 wt%) in starch- poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) films. The films were produced by blown extrusion and mechanical, barrier and structural properties were determined. Films containing 1.0 and 1.5 wt% sericin showed higher tensile strength (6.41 and 6.59 MPa) and Young's modulus (90.88 and 132.71 MPa) compared with film without sericin (4.76 MPa and 18.64 MPa). When 0.5 wt% of sericin was used, the elongation was reduced by 62%. The addition of sericin in a concentration of 1.5% (w/w) decreased the water vapor permeability of films from 7.55 to 5.94 g (m s Pa)-1, likely due to the formation of a more homogeneous and compact matrix. Based on these results, a mechanism of action is proposed, whereby sericin acts at the interface of the polymers (starch and PBAT), reducing the interfacial tension and enhancing compatibility.

Mixed matrix membranes are promising options for improving gas separation processes. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have a porous structure similar to conventional zeolites, being capable in principle of separating gases based on their differences in kinetic diameter while offering the advantage of having a partial organic character. This partial organic nature improves the compatibility between the sieve and the polymer, and a combination of the mentioned characteristics makes these hybrid materials interesting for the preparation of mixed matrix gas separation membranes. In this context the present work reports the preparation of Ultem®/ZIF-8 mixed matrix membranes and their permeabilities to pure CO2, N2 and CH4gases. A significant increase in permeability with increase in CO2/N2 selectivity was observed for the mixed matrix systems as compared to the properties of the neat Ultem®. Sorption results allowed to speculate that the ZIF-8 framework is not completely stable dimensionally, what influences the separation process by allowing gases with higher kinetic diameter than its nominal aperture to be sorbed and to diffuse through the crystal. Sorption and diffusion selectivities indicate that the higher separation performance of the mixed matrix membranes is governed by the diffusion process associated with the influence of gas molecule's geometry.

The aim of this work was to study the influence of calcium carbonate nanoparticles in both tensile and impact mechanical properties of a polypropylene homopolymer. Four compositions of PP/CaCO3 nanocomposites were prepared in a co-rotational twin screw extruder machine with calcium carbonate content of 3, 5, 7 and 10 wt. (%) The tests included SEM analyzes together with EDS analyzer and FTIR spectroscopy for calcium carbonate, tensile and impact tests for PP and the nanocomposites. The results showed an increase in PP elastic modulus and a little increase in yield stress. Brittle-to-ductile transition temperature was reduced and the impact resistance increased with the addition of nanoparticles. From the stress-strain curves we determined the occurrence of debonding process before yielding leading to stress softening. Debonding stress was determined from stress-strain curves corresponding to stress in 1% strain. We concluded that the tensile properties depend on the surface contact area of nanoparticles and on their dispersion. Finally we believe that the toughening was due to the formation of diffuse shear because of debonding process.

Four compositions of PP/CaCO3 nanocomposites were prepared in a co-rotational twin screw extruder machine with calcium carbonate content of 3, 5, 7 and 10 wt. (%). The tests included SEM analyzes for calcium carbonate, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) for the nanocomposites. The results showed an increase in PP crystallization temperature and crystallinity degree, and a reduction in spherullites size. The formation of PP β phase was confirmed by DSC and WAXD results. Finally from DSC analyses under isothermal conditions it was confirmed that calcium carbonate nanoparticles have a nucleation effect in polypropylene crystallization process by reducing the half crystallization time and increasing the kinetic constant (k).
