Abstract The Hunga Tonga–Hunga/Hunga-Haʻapai eruption on January 15, 2022 sent off a plume of ash material up to the stratosphere and triggered a meteotsunami and barometric pressure pulse that rippled through the atmosphere and oceans all around the world. The nature of the volcanic event and its global impacts on the oceans, atmosphere, lithosphere and the cryosphere are a matter of debate. Here we present a first overview of the time travel of the sound atmospheric pressure wave through the Antarctic continent based on in situ measurements, which represented a unique event observed through the polar ice sheet during the instrumental meteorological era. In addition, we estimated the tsunami travel time of the Hunga-Tonga event from a first order model to infer its impact over the Antarctic Sea ice and ice shelves. One outcome from our observations and modeling is the detection of the meteotsunami in the Antarctic Peninsula and the impact of the continental relief over the atmospheric pressure wave dispersion. Resumo O Parque Nacional da Tijuca (PNT), na Serra da Carioca, Rio de Janeiro, enfrenta deslizamentos frequentes. Isso ameaça o meio ambiente e a infraestrutura, como a Estrada do Redentor, que conecta o Centro de Visitantes das Paineiras (CVP) ao Centro de Visitantes do Setor Floresta. Devido às características geológicas e ao status de área de proteção urbana, muitas metodologias não se adequam ao mapeamento e gerenciamento de riscos. Por isso, foi desenvolvida uma adaptação metodológica para mapear com ultra detalhes áreas propensas a deslizamentos, por meio da quantificação, compreensão e espacialização de eventos e fatores condicionantes. Usando ferramentas SIG, coletou-se dados sobre estruturas geológicas e infraestrutura para avaliar o risco. Como resultado, identificou-se uma concentração de áreas de alto risco próximo ao CVP. As áreas de risco médio estão centralizadas, enquanto do meio da estrada até o Alto da Boa Vista, as áreas predominantes variam de baixo a médio risco. Os fatores mais comuns são fissuras na pista, blocos soltos nas encostas e cortes na estrada. Abstract Tijuca National Park (Parque Nacional da Tijuca - PNT), in the Carioca Hills, Rio de Janeiro, faces often landslides. This threatens the environment and the infrastructure, such as Estrada do Redentor, which connects the Paineiras Visitor Center (CVP) to the Floresta Visitor Center Sector. Due to the lithological-structure characteristics and the status of urban protection area, many methodologies are not suitable for risk mapping and management. Therefore, a methodological adjustment was developed to identify landslide-prone areas by quantifying, understanding, and spatializing events and conditioning factors. Using GIS tools, we collected data on geological structures and infrastructure to assess risk. As a result, a concentration of high-risk areas was identified near the CVP. Medium risk areas are centralized, while from the middle of the road to Alto da Boa Vista, the predominant areas range from low to medium risk. The most common factors are cracks in the road, loose blocks on the slopes, and cuts in the road. Therefore, on Redeemer Road, there is a combination of factors affecting safety, such as lithological-structure and geomorphological aspects, rainfall, slope and lack of maintenance of existing structures. ABSTRACT Extreme events affect societies all around the world. A recent example is the submarine volcano Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai in the South Pacific Ocean, which erupted on January 15, 2022 at approximately 0415 UTC, expelling ash up to 39 kilometers high. Instruments around the world recorded both the initial atmospheric shock wave and the subsequent tsunami signal. The aim of this work is to report the record from tide gauges and barometers of this event along the Brazilian coast. For this, the tsunami travel time to Brazil was calculated, and spikes in atmospheric pressure data and noise in the tide gauge records were identified. The arrival of the tsunami waves was clearly observed in tidal records from three stations located in Imbituba, Arraial do Cabo, and Salvador. In addition, in Belém and Santana, the signal-to-noise ratio was too low or there was no signal at all. Surprisingly, the atmospheric signal was less observable. The shock wave signature was evident in the Fortaleza atmospheric pressure data, while at the Imbituba and Belém stations the signal only appeared after filtering the data by calculating the highest and lowest pressure difference within the hour. The weaker, or absence of, barometric signal is likely associated with the supposed attenuation, or blocking, of the signal by the Andes Mountains.

Aqui apresentamos uma extensa pesquisa de mamíferos não-voadores ao longo das margens do Rio Jequitinhonha, região biogeográfica interessante que representa uma área de contato entre dois biomas brasileiros (Cerrado e Mata Atlântica), ainda pouco conhecidos para a fauna de mamíferos. Nossos dados foram obtidos após 13 expedições de captura (de 2005 a 2012), em ambas as margens do rio, da nascente até à foz, enriquecida por dados obtidos a partir de amostras de material depositado em seis coleções de mamíferos. Todos os espécimes coletados foram identificados através de seus cariótipos ou morfologia. Foram obtidos dados de 75 localidades (34 na margem direita, 41 à esquerda; 30 no Cerrado e 45 na Floresta Atlântica). Obtivemos registros de 91 espécies de mamíferos não-voadores, ca. de 17% de todos os mamíferos terrestres brasileiros conhecidos. Nossos resultados incluem extensões de distribuição de seis espécies (Monodelphis scalops, Thylamys velutinus, Calomys mattevii, Wiedomys pyrrhorhinos, Galea spixii, Kerodon rupestris), e informações de cariótipo de 26 espécies (11 marsupiais e 15 de roedores), com quatro novos cariótipos. Enquanto a maioria das espécies têm ampla distribuição geográfica, 26 ocorreram apenas no Cerrado e 19 apenas na Mata Atlântica. Foram registradas de 28.7% (6.3% endêmicas) de todas as espécies conhecidas para o Cerrado e 21.5% (22.2% endêmicas) da Floresta Atlântica. A riqueza da fauna registrada nesta região apoia a sua importância da compreensão na diversidade, biogeografia e evolução dos mamíferos.

Here we present an extensive survey for non-volant mammals along the margins of the Jequitinhonha River, which represents a contact area between the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biomes. Our data were obtained after 13 trapping expeditions (from 2005 to 2012) on both banks of the river, from its source to its mouth, enriched by data obtained from a literature review and voucher specimens deposited in six mammal collections. All collected specimens were identified through their karyotypes and/or morphology. We obtained data for 75 localities (34 at the rigth margin, 42 at the left margin; 30 in the Cerrado and 45 in the Atlantic Forest). We obtained voucher records for 91 species, ca. 17% of all known Brazilian terrestrial non-volant mammals. Our results include range extensions for six species (Monodelphis scalops, Thylamys velutinus, Calomys mattevii, Wiedomys pyrrhorhinos, Galea spixii, Kerodon rupestris), and karyotype information for 26 species (11 marsupials and 15 rodents), with four new karyotypes. While most species have wide geographical range in both biomes, 26 were recorded only in the Cerrado and 19 were recorded only in the Atlantic Forest. Recorded species represent 28.7% (6.3% endemic) of the species known from the Cerrado and 21.5% (22.2% endemic) of those from the Atlantic Forest. The richness of the fauna recorded in this region supports its importance for the understanding of mammal biogeography, diversity and evolution.
