Resumo As deficiências Wallaceanas no conhecimento sobre a biodiversidade, especialmente no bioma Amazônia, só podem ser superadas com o aumento dos esforços de amostragem em áreas focais. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever a ictiofauna de riachos associados a quatro áreas protegidas na Amazônia Oriental. Essas áreas incluem as drenagens do Tapajós (Parque Nacional da Amazônia, Parque Nacional do Jamanxim), Trombetas (Floresta Nacional Saracá-Taquera) e no interflúvio Tapajós/Xingu (Reserva Biológica Nascentes da Serra do Cachimbo), no estado do Pará, Brasil. Nos 99 trechos de riachos amostrados foram registradas 176 espécies de peixes. Aproximadamente um terço das espécies e dos exemplares pertencem à família Characidae, representada predominantemente por pequenos tetras (conhecidos como piabas ou lambaris). Uma espécie ameaçada de extinção (Harttia dissidens) foi registrada. Do total de espécies, 24 foram representadas por um único indivíduo e são associadas à habitats específicos. A maior distinção taxonômica foi registrada para os riachos da Floresta Nacional Saracá-Taquera, enquanto a maior variação na distinção taxonômica foi obtida para os riachos do Parque Nacional da Amazônia. Abstract Wallacean shortfalls in knowledge about biodiversity, especially in the Amazon biome, can only be addressed by increasing sampling efforts in focal areas. The objective of this study was to describe the fish fauna of streams associated with four protected areas in the Eastern Amazon. These areas include the Tapajós (Parque Nacional da Amazônia, Parque Nacional do Jamanxim) and Trombetas drainages (Floresta Nacional Saracá-Taquera), and Tapajós/Xingu interfluve (Reserva Biológica Nascentes da Serra do Cachimbo), state of Pará, Brazil. In the 99 stream reaches surveyed, 176 fish species were recorded. ABSTRACT The male and female imago stage and a new species of the Hermanella complex are described based on material from Pará State, Northern Brazil: Hydromastodon cf. mikei (Thomas & Boutonnet, 2004) and Paramaka froehlichi sp. nov. The male imago of Hydromastodon cf. mikei can be distinguished from Hydromastodon sallesi by the following combination of characters: (1) body color pattern, especially abdominal terga translucent white with terga I to IV washed with black on posterior margin; (2) compound eyes anteriorly rounded; (3) medial projection of the styliger plate short; and (4) penis lobes close to each other and with posterolateral projection as long as ½ of its length. RESUMO Córregos tropicais apresentam alta variedade de hábitats e gradientes ambientais, que refletem na maior riqueza de insetos aquáticos. Dessa forma, avaliamos se a diversidade de insetos aquáticos das categorias presa e predador é influenciada pelo tipo de substratos ou por porções longitudinais em córregos de Cerrado. Nossa hipótese é que a diversidade de presa e predador será determinada pelo tipo de substrato, partindo do pressuposto de que o substrato serve como fonte para forrageamento e/ou refúgio. Ademais, o substrato folhiço apresentará maior abundância e riqueza devido à disponibilidade de abrigo e alimento provida por esse tipo de substrato. Haverá diferença na composição de presa e predador entre substratos, pois algumas espécies apresentam associações com o tipo de substrato. As porções do córrego não exercerão efeito sobre a diversidade de presa e predador, uma vez que, em córregos de até terceira ordem não apresenta mudanças consideráveis nas características físicas. O estudo foi realizado nas porções nascente (1ª ordem), intermediário (2ª) e foz (3ª), em dois córregos, nos períodos seco e chuvoso. Foram coletadas cinco subamostras de areia, cascalho, rochas ou matacões, folhiço de remanso, de corredeira e raízes (substrato). O substrato influenciou todas as variáveis respostas de presa e predador (abundância, riqueza e composição), porém, o ambiente (porções longitudinais) não influenciou a abundância e composição de predador. A influência de substratos para a diversidade de presas e predadores evidencia a importância da vegetação ripária como fonte de material alóctone em córregos de cabeceira.

ABSTRACT Tropical streams feature high variety of habitats and environmental gradients, which reflect on the greater richness of aquatic insects. In this way, we evaluate if the diversity of aquatic insects of prey and predator categories is influenced by the type of substrates or by longitudinal portions in Cerrado streams. Our hypothesis is that prey and predator diversity will be determined by the type of substrate, assuming that the substrate serves as a source for foraging and / or refuge. In addition, the folhiço substrate will present greater abundance and richness due to the availability of shelter and food provided by this type of substrate. There will be differences in prey and predator composition among substrates, since some species have associations with the substrate type. The portions of the stream will have no effect on the diversity of prey and predator, since in streams of up to third order does not present considerable changes in physical characteristics. The study was carried out in nascent (1st order), intermediate (2nd) and estuary (3rd), in two streams, during dry and rainy periods. Five subsamples of sand, gravel, rocks or boulders were collected, backwaters, rapids and roots (substrate). The substrate influenced all prey and predator responses (abundance, richness and composition), but the environment (longitudinal portions) did not influence the abundance and predator composition. The influence of substrates on the diversity of prey and predators evidences the importance of riparian vegetation as a source of allochthonous material in bedside streams.

RESUMO Analisou-se a influência de fatores abióticos, distribuição longitudinal e temporal sobre a abundância de Brachymetra albinervis albinervis Amyot & Serville, 1843. Foram avaliados três sítios de um riacho de Cerrado: nascente, intermediário e foz, mensalmente durante um ano (junho de 2011 a maio de 2012). As variáveis abióticas aferidas foram: oxigênio dissolvido, temperatura da água, pH, condutividade elétrica, largura e profundidade do riacho. Em cada sítio, mensalmente coletou-se em transecção de 100 m lineares. Foram coletados 111 espécimes. A foz apresentou menor abundância quando comparada aos outros locais (F(2, 9) 13,721, p = 0,001). A abundância não variou entre os períodos do ano (chuva, vazante, seca ou início da chuva). Assim, a alteração na abundância de B. a. albinervisanalisada ao longo de um ano foi influenciada pelos trechos do córrego, e essa variação foi atribuída a alterações ambientais no sítio foz que apresentou menor abundância e consequentemente é o que apresenta menor integridade ambiental. Esses resultados contribuem para o conhecimento ecológico dessa espécie e discute sobre a mudança da ocorrência da espécie em função da alteração dos ambientes aquáticos.

ABSTRACT We analyzed the influence of abiotic factors, longitudinal and temporal distribution on the abundance of Brachymetra albinervis albinervis Amyot & Serville, 1843. Three sites of Cerrado stream were assessed: headwater, intermediary and river mouth, monthly for a year (June 2011 to May 2012). At each site, the following abiotic variables were monthly measured in a linear 100 meters transect: dissolved oxygen, water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, width and depth of the stream. Were collected 111 specimens. The river mouth presented lower abundance when compared with others sites (F(2,9) = 13.721, p = 0.001). The periods of the year (rain, ebb, dry or early rains), there was no differences in the abundance. Thus, the abundance of B. a. albinervis analyzed for one year showed variation only in the streams longitudinal distribution, which was attributed to the effect of environmental changes in the river mouth, where presented lower abundance and less environmental integrity. These results contribute to the ecological knowledge of this species and discusses the change in the occurrence and abundance this species due to alteration in aquatic environments.

OBJETIVOS: Investigamos como a perda da integridade ambiental afeta a composição de espécies de Zygoptera em nove locais com diferentes níveis de integridade ambiental da região de transição Cerrado-Amazônia conhecido como "arco do desmatamento" no Estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil. Nós também testamos a influência das variáveis ambientais sobre a composição de espécies. MÉTODOS: Foram coletadas em transecções de 100 m e usado ordenação (PCoA) e regressão linear simples. RESULTADOS: A composição de espécies foi fortemente influenciada pela qualidade ambiental do sítio, e o melhor modelo para explicar a composição de espécies inclui variáveis relacionadas à morfologia do canal. CONCLUSÕES: Estes resultados estão ligados à homogeneização ambiental e perda da integridade ambiental como resultado de amplas práticas agrícolas que alteram as comunidades de libélulas de riachos nesta região.

AIMS: Investigated how the loss of environmental integrity affects damselfly species composition in nine sites with different levels of environmental integrity in a Cerrado-Amazon transition region known as "arc of deforestation" in Mato Grosso State, Brazil. We also tested the influence of environmental variables on species composition. METHODS: We collected in transects of 100 m and used ordination (PCoA) and simple linear regression. RESULTS: Species composition was strongly influenced by the environmental quality of sites, and the best model to explain species composition included variables related to channel morphology. CONCLUSIONS: These results are connected to the environmental homogenization and loss of environmental integrity as a result of extensive agricultural practices which alter stream communities of dragonflies in this region.

This work aimed to assess the effect of certain physical-chemical variables and the Habitat Integrity Index (HII) have on an aquatic and semi-aquatic heteropteran community. We collected in five streams (from 1st to 4th order) that differed in habitat integrity, in order to test 1) whether heteropteran richness decreases with the Habitat Integrity Index; and 2) whether richness responds to alterations in water physical-chemical variables, since these influence community structure. In each stream, linear transects of 100 m were demarcated. A total of 1425 specimens from 10 families, 30 genera and 67 morphospecies were collected. Species richness was correlated with the Habitat Integrity Index (HII), showing a positive relationship only for Gerromorpha. This may be due to the fact that streams with greater integrity offer nearby marginal vegetation where prey and shelter can be easily found, representing optimal places for oviposition and hunting. Species adapted to such conditions are more sensitive to alterations in the physical structure of rivers. Significant differences in the composition of Heteroptera and studied infra-orders were also observed, which suggests that the anthropic disturbances over these sites have changed these insect communities. Our results indicate that the alteration in riparian areas can lead to significant changes in Heteroptera composition, even though species richness was not affected. The physical-chemical variables showed no influence on the distribution of species. This result suggests that the environment presented insufficient variation that could cause changes in the investigated community, which implies that factors other than those analyzed here may explain such variation. Three species Rhagovelia trailli (White, 1879), Rhagovelia sp. 4 and Tenagobia incerta (Lundblad, 1928) were considered to be indicators of pristine sites. The results indicate that aquatic and semi-aquatic Heteroptera and more specifically the sub-order Gerromorpha can be an important tool to assess environmental habitat integrity and enhance conservation actions of riparian forests.
