ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the diversity of ants associated with two areas of different phytophysiognomies in the Cerrado biome and an eucalyptus plantations, in Monte Carmelo - MG (18º43'29” S and 47º29'55" O). For the characterization of the ant fauna, pitfall traps were installed 10 m apart, in three distinct areas: Várzea, Cerradão (typical vegetation of the Cerrado biome) and Eucalyptus sp. plantations. Collections were carried out monthly, from January to December 2018. Eight traps per area were used, totaling 24 traps on each collection date. After 48 hours of exposure, the material collected in the traps were gathered and taken to the laboratory for sorting and subsequent identification. In this period, the greatest abundance of ants was found in the Eucalyptus area (749), followed by Várzea (291) and Cerradão (274) areas. The evaluated areas have the same ant species richness, being that seventeen species of ants were found in each area, which corroborated the rarefaction curve that identified a significant difference between areas. Higher levels of diversity and equitability (H´ = 2.07 and J´ = 0.73) were shown in Cerradão area. The Venn diagram indicated that the three areas shared 10 species of ants. In this respect, the Cerradão area presented Azteca alfari, Linepithema neotropicum, and Ectatomma opaciventre as exclusive species, while the other areas presented two species each. The indexes of diversity, equitability, and composition of the ant fauna found, characterize the Cerradão area as an ecologically more balanced environment. Resumo O Cerrado é o segundo maior bioma brasileiro e vem sofrendo com os impactos negativos em sua área original. Tais impactos podem ser mensurados por meio de bioindicadores, dentre os quais, destacam-se as formigas. Nesse contexto, o presente estudo objetivou avaliar a diversidade de formigas associadas a duas áreas de diferentes fitofisionomias do bioma Cerrado e um plantio de eucalipto, em Monte Carmelo - MG (18º43’29” S e 47º29'55" O). Para a caracterização da mirmecofauna, foram utilizadas armadilhas de queda, instaladas a 10 m de distância entre si, no interior de três áreas distintas: Várzea e Cerradão (vegetação típica do bioma Cerrado) e um plantio de Eucalyptus sp. As coletas foram realizadas mensalmente, de janeiro a dezembro de 2018. Em cada coleta utilizaram-se oito armadilhas por área, totalizando 24 armadilhas. Após 48 horas de exposição, o material coletado nas armadilhas foi recolhido e levado ao laboratório para triagem e sequente identificação. No período do estudo, foi encontrada a maior abundância de formigas na área de Eucalipto (749), seguidas das áreas Várzea (291) e Cerradão (274). As áreas avaliadas possuem a mesma riqueza de espécies de formigas, sendo que foram encontradas 17 espécies de formigas em cada área, o que corroborou com a curva de rarefação que não identificou diferença significativa entre as áreas. A área de Cerradão apresentou maiores índices de diversidade e equitabilidade (H´ = 2,07 e J´ = 0,73). O diagrama de Venn indicou que as três áreas compartilharam 10 espécies de formigas entre si. Nesse aspecto, a área de Cerradão apresentou Azteca alfari, Linepithema neotropicum e Ectatomma opaciventre, como espécies exclusivas, enquanto as demais áreas apresentaram duas espécies cada. Abstract This study aimed to compare the activity of ants during the rainy and dry seasons in a transitional environment (ecotone) at the interface of Cerrado and Caatinga biomes situated in the state of Piauí, where studies of local ant fauna are still incipient. The research was carried out at Floriano, state of Piauí, Brazil. Ants were sampled during the rainy season in December 2018 and during the dry season in June 2019. Three parallel transects were established at least 100 m apart. At each point, three sampling methods were used, with attractive baits placed on the trees and ground, and pitfall traps on the ground. Thirty-one ant species belonging to 14 genera and five subfamilies were collected, with 27 recorded in the rainy season and 17 in the dry season. The only species reported with the three collection methods and the two seasons was Camponotus crassus Mayr, 1862. Seven ant species sampled in this study are new reports for the state of Piauí. There was a significant difference in the average number of ants and the composition of the assemblages between the rainy and dry seasons. We demonstrate that the activity of ants is influenced by seasonality, corroborating our hypotheses. This is only the second study on ant diversity in the state of Piauí, and more studies are necessary to understand the processes and factors which regulate the activity patterns of ants in ecotonal situations like those observed in this region.

ABSTRACT: World production of pecan Carya illinoinensis (Juglandaceae) is led by the United States. In Brazil, especially in the Rio Grande do Sul State, there has been an expansion of the planted area in recent years. Despite this expansion of pecan culture, there is a lack of research on entomofauna associated with pecan and on cultural practices which aids in Integrated Pest Management. This study aimed to evaluate the arthropod fauna in the canopies of C. illinoinensis trees grown under different soil management practices in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A randomized design was used with five blocks and four treatments: planting in small pits of 20 × 60 cm (Sp) using a subsoiler with a leveling grader/shank, planting in small pits (Ssp) using a rotary tiller (Tsp), and planting in large pits of 40 × 60 cm (Lp). A total of 7,617 specimens were collected from November 2014 to May 2015 from the young pecan canopies. Among the 150 taxonomic groups identified, Coleoptera was the most taxonomically rich order. The blackmargined aphid Monellia caryella (Hemiptera: Aphididae) had the greatest abundance. Hymenopteran parasitoids and Coccinellidae spp. were among the natural pest enemies detected. We conclude that the arthropod fauna found in the young pecan canopies is similarly diverse among the different soil managements, with a predominance of pest species M. caryella in all the evaluated areas.
RESUMO: A produção mundial de noz-pecã Carya illinoinensis (Juglandaceae) é liderada pelos Estados Unidos. No Brasil, em especial no Rio Grande do Sul, houve uma expansão da área plantada com a cultura nos últimos anos. No entanto, faltam pesquisas relacionadas à entomofauna associada à noz-pecã, bem como práticas culturais que auxiliem no Manejo Integrado de Pragas, mesmo havendo uma expansão da cultura. Assim, o presente estudo objetivou avaliar a fauna de artrópodes na copa de plantas de C. illinoinensis, submetido a diferentes manejos de solo, em Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Para tanto, utilizou-se delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com cinco blocos e quatro tratamentos: plantio em cova pequena, com 20 × 60 cm (Sp); utilização de subsolador mais grade niveladora e cova pequena (Ssp); utilização de enxada rotativa e cova pequena (Tsp); e plantio em cova grande, com 40 × 60 cm (Lp). De novembro de 2014 a maio de 2015, foram coletadas 7.617 espécimes nas copas de árvores jovens de nogueira-pecã. Foram identificados 150 grupos taxonômicos, sendo Coleoptera a ordem com maior riqueza de espécies. Monellia caryella (Hemiptera: Aphididae) apresentou elevada densidade. Foram registrados os inimigos naturais himenópteros parasitoides e Coccinellidae. Conclui-se que a artropodofauna em copas de plantas jovens de nogueira-pecã apresenta diversidade similar entre os tratamentos e predomínio de M. caryella nas áreas avaliadas.

Resumo Políticos e profissionais de meio ambiente têm apontado para a ausência de conhecimento científico para embasamento da legislação que dispõe sobre o planejamento urbano. Assim, o intuito desse ensaio é disponibilizar conhecimento ecológico para auxiliar políticos e profissionais de meio ambiente na tomada de decisões relacionadas ao zoneamento urbano do Brasil. Como ciência, a ecologia disponibiliza o conhecimento necessário para auxiliar a criação de diretrizes e normas para o zoneamento urbano. Especificamente, a ecologia de paisagem aponta diferentes métodos de trabalho, que possuem parâmetros de qualificação e quantificação do ambiente urbano. Esses parâmetros podem ser utilizados como critérios para o planejamento de cidades sustentáveis. Já a ecologia urbana tem demonstrado a importância da conservação de áreas verdes e azuis (corpos de água) nas cidades, além da necessidade da formação de equipes transdisciplinares para uma gestão urbana e elaboração de políticas públicas que visem a estratégia de zoneamento sustentável. De modo geral, a ciência da ecologia demonstra contribuições que auxiliam na criação de diretrizes e normas para o zoneamento urbano brasileiro. As sugestões fornecidas através desse ensaio constituem um ponto de partida para a formulação de melhorias nas leis destinadas a desenvolver e fortalecer a legislação relativa ao zoneamento urbano brasileiro.
Abstract Politicians and environmental professionals have pointed to the lack of scientific knowledge to support legislation for planning urban centers. Thus, this essay aims to provide ecological knowledge to assist politicians and environmental professionals in decision making regarding the Brazilian urban zoning. As a science, ecology provides the necessary knowledge to assist the creation of guidelines and standards for urban zoning. Specifically, landscape ecology shows different methods of work, which have as parameters the qualification and quantification of urban environments. These parameters can be used as criteria for planning sustainable cities. The field of urban ecology has demonstrated the importance of conserving green and blue areas (water bodies) in cities, as well as the need for the formation of multidisciplinary teams for urban management and elaboration of public policies pointed to zoning sustainability strategies. Generally, ecology show contributions that assist in the creation of guidelines and norms for Brazilian urban zoning. The suggestions provided through this essay are a starting point for improving the formulation of laws designed to develop and strengthen the legislation on Brazilian urban zoning.

Termite participation in the soil-forming processes of 'murundus' structures in the semi-arid region of Brazil

ABSTRACT Regularly spaced earth mounds called “murundus” are scattered in several landscapes in the semi-arid region of Brazil. Although recent evidence indicates that termites are involved in the building of murundus, the contribution of these insects to soil-forming processes in those structures remains poorly understood. In this study, we tested a set of hypotheses to examine whether there are consistent evidence for suggesting the participation of termites in the formation of murundus soils. Morphological and physicochemical features of murundus were compared with adjacent soil profiles in the inter-mounds surface and one epigeic nest built by one species of Syntermes Holmgren. The murundus soils had a more clayey texture, higher contents of nutrients (C, N, P, K, Ca, and Mg) and organic matter compared with adjacent soils. We identified a set of recent and ancient traces inside the murundus that reveals the intense building activity of termite colonies (e.g., galleries, tunnels, and royal chambers), confirming that these structures are not only occupied by these insects but also built-up by them. Taken together, our results provide hard evidence that the long-term activity of mound-building termites was the hierarchically dominant process in producing murundus structures in the semi-arid region of Brazil. Based on available empirical data, we propose an explanatory model on how that construction process may have taken place.

RESUMEN Se analiza el origen y evolución del término gremio, así como su aplicación en ecología, considerando las múltiples connotaciones que se le ha dado y la confusión que se ha generado por utilizarlo de forma indebida. De igual forma, se discute la importancia de homogenizar los términos y definir de manera clara a los gremios, a fin de tener un leguaje que permita entender los alcances del término sin ambigüedades. El uso del término, así como su persistencia en estudios ecológicos, sugiere que el mismo tiene relevancia considerable dependiendo de la forma y el modo en que es empleado. El uso inadecuado o derivado de este término es arriesgado y peligroso, dado que tiende a reducir el término a una palabra vacía con múltiples significados. Más que nada, esta trivialización constituye una amenaza al uso y significado adecuado del concepto de gremio en ecología.
ABSTRACT The origin and evolution of the term guild are analyzed, as well as its application in ecology, considering the multiple connotations that have been given and the confusion that has been generated by using it improperly. Likewise, the importance of homogenizing the terms and clearly defining the guilds is discussed, to have a language that allows understanding the scope of the term without ambiguities. The use of the term, as well as its persistence in ecological studies, suggests that it has considerable relevance depending on the form and the way it is used. The inappropriate or derivative use of this term is risky and dangerous since it tends to reduce the term to an empty word with multiple meanings. Also, this trivialization constitutes a threat to the proper use of the guild concept in ecology and its meaning as a whole.

SUMMARY: Spatial distribution of arthropods in forests has crucial implications for biodiversity conservation and forest management. In this environment, ants represent a good model for studies on vertical stratification of fauna. They are abundantly found in soil and well distributed in all vegetation strata. Factors determining the diversity and distribution of ant communities have deserved attention for years due to the essential role of these insects in many ecological processes such as nutrient cycling, energy turnover, herbivory, seed dispersal and seed predation. The aim of this study was to compare the richness and structure of ant assemblages among vertical strata (soil, shrubs and trees) in two phytophysiognomies of the Brazilian Savanna. The capture of ground-dwelling ants and arboreal ants was carried out with traps containing attractive baits. Sixty-six ant species were identified, and in both phytophysiognomies. Soil (litter) showed higher richness of ant species when compared to the others (Jackkinife 1). There was a distinction between soil and canopy (shrubs/trees) strata, shown in the composition and capture frequency of ant species (ANOSIM, P = 0.001), therefore, evidencing the vertical stratification of the ant assemblage.
RESUMEN: La distribución espacial de artrópodos en los bosques tiene implicaciones cruciales para la conservación de la biodiversidad y la gestión forestal. En este ambiente, las hormigas representan un buen modelo para los estudios de estratificación vertical de la fauna. Se encuentran abundantemente en el suelo y están bien distribuidos en todos los estratos de la vegetación. Los factores que determinan la diversidad y distribución de las comunidades de hormigas han merecido atención durante años debido al papel esencial de estos insectos en muchos procesos ecológicos, como el ciclo de nutrientes, el recambio de energía, la herbivoría, la dispersión de semillas y la depredación de semillas. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue comparar la riqueza y la estructura del ensamble de hormigas entre los estratos verticales (suelo, arbustos y árboles) en dos fitofisionomías de la sabana brasileña. La captura de hormigas que viven en el suelo y hormigas arbóreas se llevó a cabo con trampas que contenían cebos atractivos. Se identificaron sesenta y seis especies de hormigas, y en ambas fitofisionomías, el estrato del suelo (epigeo) mostró una mayor riqueza de especies de hormigas en comparación con los otros (Jackkinife 1). Se encontró una distinción entre los estratos de suelo y dosel (arbustos/árboles), que se muestran en la composición y frecuencia de captura de las especies de hormigas (ANOSIM, P = 0,001), lo que evidencia la estratificación vertical de los ensambles de hormigas.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar um levantamento sobre formigas do solo, em cultivos de milho (Zea mays) Bt e não Bt, e comparar o efeito desses cultivos sobre essa comunidade. Nove armadilhas do tipo “pitfall” foram instaladas a intervalos de 10 m e distribuídas na área central (900 m2) de cada um dos seguintes tratamentos (2.500 m2): milho convencional; milho modificado com as proteínas Cry1F, Cry1Ab e Vip3A; e área de vegetação nativa. Foram feitas coletas quinzenais, durante quatro períodos (ciclos de produção completos) de cultivo, de 2011 a 2013. O número de espécies de formiga variou de 25 no milho Bt (Vip 3A) a 58 no milho Bt (Cry 1F). O tratamento com milho convencional apresentou o maior índice de diversidade de Shannon-Wiener (H’ =2,60). O índice de Jaccard mostrou que há dissimilaridade entre as áreas cultivadas com milho e a área com vegetação nativa, na maioria dos tratamentos, e que os milhos Bt e não Bt apresentam similaridade quanto à composição de espécies de formigas do solo. O cultivo do milho Bt não afeta a comunidade de formigas de solo. A subfamília Myrmicinae apresenta o maior número de espécies em todos os períodos de coleta, com 57, 41, 47 e 50 espécies no primeiro, no segundo, no terceiro e no quarto períodos, respectivamente. O gênero Pheidole, pertencente a esta subfamília, apresenta o maior número de espécies.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to survey soil ants in Bt and non-Bt maize (Zea mays) crops, and to compare their effect on the soil ant community. Nine pitfall traps, 10 m apart, were installed in a central area (900 m2) of each of the following treatments (2,500 m2): conventional maize; maize modified with the Cry1F, Cry1Ab, and Vip3A proteins; and a native vegetation area. Fortnightly collections were conducted during four periods (complete producing cycles) of the crop, from 2011 to 2013. The number of ant species varied from 25 in Bt maize (Vip 3A) to 58 in Bt maize (Cry 1F). The treatment with conventional maize showed the highest Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H’ = 2.60). Jaccard’s index showed that there is dissimilarity between the cultivated maize areas and the native vegetation area in most treatments, and that Bt and non-Bt maize show similarity in their soil ant assemblages. The cultivation of Bt maize does not affect the soil ant community. The subfamily Myrmicinae shows the highest number of species in all the collection periods, with 57, 41, 47, and 50 species in the first, second, third, and fourth periods, respectively. The genus Pheidole, belonging to this subfamily, shows the greatest number of species.

ResumenLa deforestación es una de las principales causas de pérdida de biodiversidad en todo el mundo. Las hormigas son clave como ingenieras del ecosistema, por lo tanto, la pérdida de la diversidad de hormigas puede indicar la pérdida de funciones cruciales de los ecosistemas. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la riqueza de hormigas del suelo y estimar si los niveles superiores (Subfamilia y Género) pueden ser usados como sustitutos para estimar la riqueza de especies en diferentes estados de sucesión del bosque (bosque primario, bosque secundario y sistema agroforestal) en la Amazonía Oriental. Fueron muestreadas 65 parcelas en el estado de Maranhão y Pará entre 2011 y 2014. El esquema de muestreo siguió el procedimiento de Biología de Suelos Tropicales y Fertilidad (TSBF). Primero caracterizamos los tipos de vegetación de acuerdo con su edad y luego se estimó la riqueza de especies. Para evaluar si los taxones superiores pueden utilizarse como sustitutos utilizamos funciones lineales y exponenciales y correlación de Pearson. En total, se identificaron 180 especies distribuidas en 60 géneros. Los resultados mostraron que la riqueza fue superior en el bosque secundario intermedio (88) y avanzado (76) y fue menor en el sistema agroforestal (38) y bosque ribereño primario (35). El género fue el mejor sustituto para estimar la riqueza de especies de hormigas a través de los diferentes tipos de sucesión vegetal, explicando entre el 72-97 % (P < 0.001) de la variabilidad total de especies. Nuestros resultados confirman que el uso del nivel de género es un excelente sustituto para estimar la riqueza de especies de hormigas en la región y tanto los bosques en regeneración y sistemas agroforestales pueden contribuir en la conservación de la comunidad de hormigas en la Amazonía Oriental.
Abstract:Deforestation in Amazon forests is one of the main causes for biodiversity loss worldwide. Ants are key into the ecosystem because act like engineers; hence, the loss of ants’ biodiversity may be a guide to measure the loss of essential functions into the ecosystems. The aim of this study was to evaluate soil ant’s richness and to estimate whether higher taxa levels (Subfamily and Genus) can be used as surrogates of species richness in different vegetation types (fallows, old-growth forests and agroforestry systems) in Eastern Amazon. The samples were taken in 65 areas in the Maranhão and Pará States in the period 2011-2014. The sampling scheme followed the procedure of Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility (TSBF). Initially, the vegetation types were characterized according to their age and estimated species richness. Linear and exponential functions were applied to evaluate if higher taxa can be used as surrogates and correlated with the Pearson coefficient. In total, 180 species distributed in 60 genera were identified. The results showed that ant species richness was higher in intermediate fallows (88) and old secondary forest (76), and was lower in agroforestry systems (38) and mature riparian forest (35). The genus level was the best surrogate to estimate the ant’s species richness across the different vegetation types, and explained 72-97 % (P < 0.001) of the total species variability. The results confirmed that the genus level is an excellent surrogate to estimate the ant’s species richness in the region and that both fallows and agroforestry systems may contribute in the conservation of Eastern Amazon ant community. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito do fogo sobre a fauna de formigas associada à Pinus elliottii Engelm. O estudo foi desenvolvido no município de Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, numa área experimental junto ao Campus da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM), em um plantio de um hectare de Pinus elliottii com 28 anos de idade e espaçamento de 2 m x 2 m, no qual ocorreu um incêndio ao final de novembro de 2008. Um mês após, iniciou-se uma amostragem da fauna de formigas, concluída em novembro de 2009. Utilizou-se o método de interceptação de insetos perambulantes através do uso de armadilhas de solo sem atrativo, distribuídas no centro do povoamento, sendo dispostas 10 armadilhas em transecto linear simples, em intervalos de 10 metros permanecendo enterradas por 48 horas. Ao final deste período, o material biológico foi acondicionado em potes plásticos e encaminhado ao laboratório para triagem, onde as formigas foram separadas em morfoespécies e prosseguiram para identificação. A partir dos levantamentos foram encontradas 25 espécies de formigas distribuídas em onze gêneros, oito tribos e quatro subfamílias. Destas, as que apresentaram maiores frequências de ocorrência em suas respectivas subfamílias foram Pseudomyrmex termitarius (46,7%), Acromyrmex crassispinus e Pachycondyla striata (ambas com 35,8%), e Camponotus blandus (25,0%). O fogo é um agente de distúrbio ambiental por vezes significativo, causando efeitos positivos e negativos sobre a fauna edáfica. Sua ação pode ter gerado efeito indireto negativo sobre Crematogaster victima e positivo sobre Pseudomyrmex termitarius, Acromyrmex crassispinus, Pachycondyla striata e Camponotus blandus presentes no sub-bosque de Pinus elliottii, pós-incêndio.
This work aimed at assessing the effect of fire over an ant fauna associated to Pinus elliottii Engelm. The study was developed in the city of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, in an experimental area next to the Campus of Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM), in a 28-year-old plantation of an hectare of Pinus elliottii, spacing 2m x 2m, on which a fire happened in the end of November, 2008. One month later, an ant fauna sampling was initiated, being concluded in November, 2009. The method of interception of wandering insects has been used through soil traps without attraction, distributed in the center of the population, being prepared 10 traps in simple linear transection, in intervals of 10 meters that remained buried for 48 hours. After such period, the biological material was packed in plastic pots, transported to the laboratory for a triage, where the ants were separated into morphospecies and proceeded to identification. From the surveys, 25 ant species were found, distributed in eleven genera, eight tribes and four subfamilies. From these, the ones who presented the biggest occurrence frequencies in their respective subfamilies were Pseudomyrmex termitarius (46,7%), Acromyrmex crassispinus, and Pachycondyla striata (both with 35,8%), and Camponotus blandus (25,0%). Fire is an agent of environmental disturbance many times significant, causing positive and negative effects over the edaphic fauna. Its action might have caused a negative indirect effect over Crematogaster victima and positive over Pseudomyrmex termitarius, Acromyrmex crassispinus, Pachycondyla striata and Camponotus blandus present in the understory of Pinus elliottii, after the fire.

Diversos animais, incluindo isópodos terrestres, vivem em ninhos de térmites como ocupantes secundários. Neste trabalho, foram registradas cinco espécies de isópodos terrestres (Oniscidea) em 17 de 34 ninhos deNasutitermes estudados em uma plantação de cacau situada próxima a Ilhéus, Bahia, Brasil. Destes ninhos, dois eram decadentes e 15 abandonados. Catorze ninhos ativos, um decadente e dois abandonados não apresentaram isópodos. Foram registrados os oniscídeos Atlantoscia rubromarginata, uma espécie não identificada de Atlantoscia (Philosciidae),Pudeoniscus birabeni, P. obscurus (Pudeoniscidae) eNeotroponiscus carolii (Bathytropidae). Foram coletados 146 indivíduos, dos quais 122 pertenciam à espécie A. rubromarginata. Devido à ausência de isópodos em ninhos ativos, estes foram considerados termitariófilos.
Various animals live in termite nests as secondary occupants. Among them are terrestrial isopods. We found five species of terrestrial isopods (Oniscidea) in 17 of 34 termite nests of Nasutitermes in a cocoa plantation near Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil (in 2 aging and 15 abandoned nests). The 14 active, 1 aging and 2 abandoned nests bore no isopods. The oniscideans were Atlantoscia rubromarginata, an undescribed species of Atlantoscia (Philosciidae), Pudeoniscus birabeni, P. obscurus (Pudeoniscidae) and Neotroponiscus carolii (Bathytropidae). Of the 146 individuals collected, 122 were A. rubromarginata. Due to the absence of isopods in active nests, these terrestrial isopods are considered termitariophilous.

Temporal variation in the composition of ant assemblages (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) on trees in the Pantanal floodplain, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. In this paper we investigate how seasonal flooding influences the composition of assemblages of ants foraging on trees in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul. During the flood in the Pantanal, a large area is covered by floods that are the main forces that regulate the pattern of diversity in these areas. However, the effects of such natural disturbances in the ant communities are poorly known. In this sense, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of temporal variation in assemblages of ants foraging on trees in the Pantanal of Miranda. Samples were collected during a year in two adjacent areas, one who suffered flooding during the wet period and another that did not suffer flooding throughout the year. In 10 sites for each evaluated habitat, five pitfall traps were installed at random in trees 25 m apart from each other. In the habitat with flooding, the highest richness was observed during the flooding period, while there was no significant change in richness in the area that does not suffer flooding. The diversity of species between the two evaluated habitats varied significantly during the two seasons. Most ants sampled belong to species that forage and nest in soil. This suggests that during the flood in flooded habitats, ants that did not migrate to higher areas without flooding adopt the strategy to search for resources in the tree canopy.

A sustentabilidade da extração madeireira seletiva depende de avaliações de impacto e monitoramento dos fatores abióticos, vegetação e fauna. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram estimar e comparar a riqueza e composição de formigas em área de manejo florestal sustentável de baixo impacto, no Projeto de Assentamento Chico Mendes, no Acre. As coletas foram realizadas com armadilhas pitfall e extrator de Winkler, em 30 parcelas de 10 x 10 m. As parcelas foram igualmente distribuídas em três tratamentos: (1) manejo - base de árvores exploradas em 2007; (2) queda natural - base de árvores caídas naturalmente em área não manejada; e (3) controle - parcela sem queda de árvore na mesma área não manejada. Para a caracterização da vegetação, foram tomadas medidas das variáveis: densidade arbórea e arbustiva, área basal arbórea e de árvores caídas, espessura de serapilheira e cobertura de dossel. A densidade arbórea foi significantemente maior no tratamento controle que no manejo. Diferenças significativas foram encontradas em cobertura de dossel entre os tratamentos controle e manejo e controle e queda natural. Foram coletadas 88 espécies de formigas, distribuídas em sete subfamílias. Não houve diferença na riqueza de espécies entre os tratamentos. Embora menor similaridade tenha sido encontrada entre os tratamentos manejo e controle, não foram observadas grandes diferenças na composição entre eles. Esses resultados indicaram que, nessa área, a atividade de extração madeireira de baixo impacto não afetou a assembleia de formigas, portanto, funcionalmente, essa forma de manejo não acarretou alterações no ecossistema em relação aos serviços associados às formigas.
The sustainability of selective logging depends on impact assessments and monitoring of abiotic factors, vegetation and fauna. In this study, the richness and composition of ants were estimated and compared in forest submitted to reduced-impact logging techniques in Acre, Brazil. Ants were collected with pitfall traps and Winkler extractor method, in 30 plots of 10 x 10 m. Plots were equally distributed in three treatments: (1) logged - base of trees explored in 2007, (2) natural fall - base of naturally fallen trees in unlogged forest (3) control - a plot without falling tree in the same unlogged forest. Variables such as shrub and tree density, basal area of trees and fallen trees, leaf litter thickness and canopy coverage were estimated to characterize the vegetation. Tree density was significantly higher in the control than in the logged treatments. Significant differences were found for canopy cover between control and logged treatments and control and natural fall treatments. A total of 88 ant species belonging to seven subfamilies were collected. Richness of ants did not differ among treatments. Although lower similarity was found between management and control treatments, there were no major differences in composition between them. These results indicate that for this area, the activity of low-impact logging did not affect the assembly of ants. Therefore, this type of management has not resulted in changes in the ecosystem in relation to services associated with ants.

Comunidades de formigas epígeas em remanescentes da Mata Atlântica do Estado de São Paulo: um estudo comparativo utilizando o conceito de guildas. As guildas constituem-se em uma valiosa ferramenta ecológica, pois permitem realizar comparações entre ambientes em diferentes condições. As formigas podem ser utilizadas como indicadores ecológicos, principalmente para o monitoramento de áreas florestais degradadas. O objetivo deste estudo foi agrupar em guildas os Formicidae epígeas, coletados em remanescentes da Mata Atlântica do Estado de São Paulo. As coletas ocorreram em três áreas distintas do bioma Mata Atlântica: restinga arbórea (Cananéia), floresta estacional semidecídua (Piracicaba) e floresta ombrófila densa (Pariquera-Açu). As formigas foram identificadas e agrupadas em guildas, com base nos atributos ecológicos de comportamento e hábito, de acordo com a literatura. As formigas foram agrupadas em nove guildas, sendo que o ecossistema floresta estacional semidecídua apresentou oito destas, seguido da restinga arbórea (7) e da floresta ombrófila densa (6). As guildas encontradas foram: espécies onívoras, espécies granívoras, espécies predadoras especialistas de serapilheira e do solo, espécies predadoras generalistas de serapilheira, formigas subterrâneas dependentes de honeydew, formigas que fazem correições, formigas arborícolas dominantes ou subdominantes, que ocasionalmente forrageiam no chão, formigas dominantes de solo ou serapilheira e formigas cultivadoras de fungo, utilizando fezes e cadáveres de insetos. As guildas encontradas poderão ser utilizadas em monitoramento da mirmecofauna no bioma Mata Atlântica, fornecendo subsídios para futuros estudos ecológicos.
Epigean ant communities in Atlantic Forest remnants of São Paulo: a comparative study using the guild concept. The guilds constitute a valuable ecological tool, because they allow conducting comparisons among environments under different conditions. The ants can be used as ecological indicators, mainly for the monitoring of degraded forest areas. The aim of this research was to study guild organization among the epigeous Formicidae living in Atlantic forest remnants of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Ant collections were performed in three distinct Atlantic forest biome areas: arboreal littoral vegetation ("restinga") (Cananéia), semideciduous seasonal forest (Piracicaba) and dense ombrophylousforest (Pariquera-Açu). After identification, the ants were grouped into guilds, based on the ecological attributes of behavior and habit, according to the literature. Nine guilds were found; the semideciduous seasonal forest ecosystem presented eight of them, followed by the arboreal sandbank (7) and dense ombrophylous forest (6). The guilds found were: litter omnivorous and scavengers, granivorous species, specialist predators living in litter and soil, litter generalist predators, subterranean mealybug-dependent species, army ants, dominant or subdominants arboreal, that occasionally forage on the ground, soil or litter dominant and fungus-growers, using feces and insect body fragments. The guilds found can be used in the monitoring of the mirmecofauna in the Atlantic Forest biome, supplying insights for further ecological studies.
