Abstract The evaluation was performed with 25 cows from dairy 17, belonging to Dos Ríos enterprise, in order to assess the relation between the temperature and humidity index, rectal temperature and respiratory rate. The information was taken at three times of the day: morning, midday and afternoon. The results showed that in the morning the cows are in a thermo neutral zone (temperature and humidity index 69.59), while at midday they are under medium heat stress (THI 79.61), and in the afternoon under severe stress (THI 91.69). Under severe heat stress, the rectal temperature of pregnant lactating cows increased (P = 0.0136) by 0.280C with respect to the rectal temperature of non-pregnant lactating cows. The respiratory rate was not affected by the light temperature and humidity index. But in the moderate stress, pregnant cows showed higher (P = 0.0003) respiratory rates of 1.9 and 2.0 % in relation to non-pregnant cows for moderate and severe stress, respectively. The physiological response to the temperature and humidity index, according to the milking group, showed that the high production group had higher rectal temperature values (P = 0.0003) in 0.16 and 0.21 oC and the respiratory rate increased (P = 0.0024) in 9.21 and 7.89 % in relation to the average group, for moderate and severe stress, respectively. Under the conditions of this study, at midday and afternoon, the animals are under moderate and severe stress, respectively, conditions that affect more the lactating pregnant animals and the open cows or the highest production group.

Resumen La evaluación se realizó con 25 vacas de la lechería 17, perteneciente a la unidad empresarial de base Dos Ríos, con el objetivo de valorar la relación que existe entre el índice de temperatura y humedad, la temperatura rectal y la frecuencia respiratoria. La información se tomó en tres momentos del día: mañana, mediodía y tarde. Los resultados indicaron que en la mañana las vacas se encuentran en zona termoneutral (índice de temperatura y humedad 69.59), mientras que al mediodía se hallan bajo estrés calórico medio (ITH 79.61), y en la tarde bajo estrés severo (ITH 91.69). Bajo estrés calórico severo, la temperatura rectal de las vacas lactantes gestantes se incrementó (P=0.0136) en 0.280C con respecto a la temperatura rectal de las vacas lactantes no gestantes. La frecuencia respiratoria no se afectó ante el índice de temperatura y humedad ligero. Pero ante el estrés moderado, las vacas gestantes presentaron mayores (P=0.0003) frecuencias respiratorias en 1.9 y 2.0 % con relación a las no gestantes para estrés moderado y severo, respectivamente. La respuesta fisiológica al índice de temperatura y humedad, según grupo de ordeño, indicó que el grupo de alta producción presentó valores de temperatura rectal más altos (P=0.0003) en 0.16 y 0.21 oC y la frecuencia respiratoria se incrementó (P=0.0024) en 9.21 y 7.89 % con relación al grupo de media, para estrés moderado y severo, respectivamente. En las condiciones de este estudio, en los horarios del mediodía y tarde, los animales se encuentran bajo estrés moderado y severo, respectivamente, condiciones que afectan más a los animales gestantes lactantes y a las recentinas o grupo de mayor producción.

Caraterizaram-se histologicamente as alterações do fígado de ovelhas com toxemia da prenhez. Dez ovelhas foram mantidas em pasto ad libitum, e outras 10 submetidas a jejum a partir do 130º dia de gestação, por até quatro dias. Biopsias hepáticas foram realizadas aos 70, 100, 130 e 140 dias de gestação e, aos 45 dias pós-parto. Níveis séricos de hydroxibutirato, ácidos graxos não esterificados (NEFA), aspartato aminotransferase e fosfatase alcalina foram determinados. O estudo histológico revelou extensão semelhantes de degeneração nos dois grupos no 130º dia de gestação. No 140º dia de gestação, alta proporção de animais submetidos ao jejum, apresentou intensa degeneração no fígado (9/9 vs. 4/10; P<0,01) e, desses, quase todos 7/9 tinham grande quantidade de pequenas gotas de lipídios em quase todos os hepatócitos, nas diferentes regiões do ácino, além de níveis séricos mais elevados de NEFA. Quarenta e cinco dias pós-parto, os animais dos dois grupos apresentaram degeneração discreta, como no início. No 140º dia de gestação, verificou-se correlação positiva entre a severidade das lesões histológicas e a enzima aspartato aminotransferase, nos animais submetidos a jejum (P<0.05). Todas as amostras com degeneração corresponderam ao tipo microvesicular. Um curto período de jejum, na fase final da gestação da ovelha produz degeneração hepática reversível.

The histological changes of the liver in ewes with pregnancy toxemia were characterized. Ten ewes were fed on grass ad libitum, and another ten were starved from day 130 of pregnancy for up to four days. Liver puncture biopsies were performed at days 70, 100, 130, and 140 of pregnancy, and at day 45 in postpartum. Seric hydroxybutyrate (HB), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), aspartate aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase were dosed. Histological preparations revealed similar incidence and intensity of mild liver steatosis in both groups at day 130. Starved ewes become toxemic (as indicated by HB), and at day 140 exhibited more severe injury in a higher proportion (9/9 vs. 4/10; P<0.01). Almost all of them (7/9) had large amounts of small lipid droplets in almost every hepatocyte over the whole liver acinus, and higher NEFA values. At day 45 in postpartum, both groups had mild steatotic changes as initially. A positive correlation between severity of liver damage seric and only aspartate aminotransferase was observed at day 140 in starved animals (P<0.05). This enzyme could be used to assess liver damage, but not alkaline phosphatase. All samples with degeneration corresponded to the microvesicular type. A short starvation period during late pregnancy in ewes produced reversible liver degeneration.

Combustion of organic sulfur from fossil fuels can produce acid rain that deteriorates the environment and infrastructure. Sulfur removal by microorganism has appeared as an alternative for this challenge. In this work, biodesulfurization of 50:50 water-kerosene emulsions were carried out at 100 mL scale and in a 0.01 m³ airlift reactor with resting cells of the reference strain ATCC 39327 and Pseudomonas native strains Nº 02, 05 and 06. The reactor conditions were 30°C, pH 8.0 and 0.34 m³ h-1 air flow. After 7 culture days, the mean sulfur removal for the strains Nº 06 and ATCC 39327 was 64 and 53%, respectively, with a mean calorific power loss of 4.5% for both strains. The use of the native strain Nº 06 and the designed airlift reactor is shown as an alternative for biodesulfurization process and constitute a first step for its scale-up to pilot plant.

O uso intensivo do solo, aliado a condições inadequadas de manejo, concorre para a deterioração de suas propriedades físicas e isso se deve, principalmente, às modificações em sua estrutura. Uma vez que as mudanças estruturais influem diretamente na morfologia dos agregados, considera-se fundamental a procura de novos métodos de estudos macromorfológicos para permitir o acompanhamento das modificações dessa característica nos solos cultivados. Sendo assim, este trabalho teve por objetivo adaptar e testar um método digital de análise macromorfológica qualitativa de agregados, visando detectar modificações morfológicas causadas pela ação antrópica. Para tal estudo, foram escolhidos cinco sistemas de preparo do solo: plantio direto, escarificador, grade aradora, arado de discos e arado de aivecas. Realizou-se o estudo da forma e do tamanho das diferentes classes de agregados de um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico típico, em amostras coletadas em 1998, após a aquisição de imagens com o uso de um scanner (HP 6100C com capacidade de resolução ótica de 1.200 dpi) e o posterior processamento dessas imagens pelo programa de computador denominado UTHSCSA Image Tool. Este programa fornece índices sobre os agregados, tais como: arredondamento, compacidade e alongamento. O índice arredondamento é dependente da medida de perímetro (rugosidade externa) e os índices compacidade e alongamento são dependentes da medida do comprimento do maior eixo (arestas). De maneira geral, os sistemas de manejo utilizados por três anos consecutivos não promoveram diferenças morfológicas dos agregados do Latossolo Vermelho textura argilosa para as variáveis analisadas. A análise de imagens mostrou-se sensível à detecção de mudanças na morfologia dos agregados do solo, sendo bastante promissora como uma nova ferramenta nos estudos da estrutura do solo.

The intensive soil use together with inadequate management practices contribute to the deterioration of soil physical properties, mainly due to modifications in the soil structure pattern. Once the structural changes could affect the morphology aggregates in different ways, the search for new methods of studying soil macro-morphological characteristics must be prioritized to allow the observation of modified characteristics in cultivated soils. Therefore, this study was carried out to adapt and test a digital method for a qualitative macro-morphological analysis of soil aggregates of Rodhic Haplustox in samples taken in 1998, aiming to detect morphological modifications caused by human activities. From an original set of eleven, five replicated treatments were selected: no till, cinzel plow, heavy disk harrow, disk plow and chisel plow, carried out annually. The shape of the different soil aggregates was from images obtained using a scanner (HP 6100C with 1200 dpi optical resolution) which were then processed by the computer program UTHSCSA Image Tool. This program furnishes values of different aggregate indexes: roundness, compactness and lengthiness. The roundness index depends on the perimeter measurement (external roughness) and the compactness and lengthiness indexes depend on the measurement of the length of the longest axle (long edges). Generally, the management systems used during three consecutive years did not modify the aggregate morphology of the clayey Rodhic Haplustox for the analyzed variables. Image analysis sensitively detected alterations in soil aggregate morphology promising considerable usefulness as a novel tool for on soil structure studies.

As conseqüências diretas do manejo inadequado do solo são a erosão, a redução da produtividade e a perda da sustentabilidade. Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a resistência à penetração (RP) e a permeabilidade do solo à água (PER) sob sistemas de manejo em uso na região dos cerrados. O estudo foi realizado na Embrapa Milho e Sorgo, em Sete Lagoas (MG), em Latossolo Vermelho distrófico típico textura muito argilosa fase cerrado. O cerrado nativo propiciou menor densidade do solo, maior macroporosidade, maior volume total de poros, conseqüentemente, menor resistência à penetração (0,84 a 2,09 MPa) e maior permeabilidade (95 mm h-1). Foram verificados maiores valores de resistência à penetração vertical para o sistema com preparo convencional com arado de discos e cultivo em rotação com milho e feijão, na profundidade de 15-30 cm no solo, sendo o valor 3,04 MPa classificado como alto, podendo ser um indicativo de restrição ao desenvolvimento radicular e compactação do solo. De modo geral, ao longo do perfil do solo, os maiores valores de RP foram observados para o plantio direto. Não houve diferenças significativas na PER entre os sistemas de manejo, estando os valores na faixa de 6 a 14 mm h-1, sendo a mesma classificada como lenta; estes valores foram bem inferiores aos do sistema em equilíbrio. Os atributos físicos utilizados neste estudo, como indicadores da qualidade do solo, apresentaram boa performance na distinção dos efeitos proporcionados pelos sistemas de manejo em relação ao sistema em equilíbrio, contribuindo para o monitoramento do manejo sustentável de solos da região dos cerrados.

The direct consequences of inadequate soil management are erosion, productivity reduction and loss of sustainability. This study aimed to evaluate the resistance to penetration and permeability of soil to water under management systems used in the cerrado region. The study was conducted at Embrapa Corn and Sorghum, in Sete Lagoas (MG), using a cerrado phase, very clayey, typic dystrophic Red Latosol (Acrusthox). The native cerrado provided lower soil density, higher macroporosity, higher total volume of pores, and consequently, smaller resistance to penetration (0.84 to 2.09 MPa) and higher permeability (95 mm h-1). Higher resistance to vertical penetration values were found for conventional tillage with disk plow and corn-soybean rotation, at 15-30 cm depth, being the 3.04 MPa value classified as high, which can be indicative of restriction to root development and soil compaction. In general, greater values of resistance to penetration were observed throughout the soil profile, for the no-tillage system. There were no significant differences in permeability among the management systems, with the values ranging from 6 to 14 mm h-1 being classified as slow; these values were rather inferior than the equilibrium system. The physical attributes utilized in this study, as indicators of soil quality, presented a good distinction of the effects provided by the management systems in relation to those of the system in equilibrium, contributing for the monitoring of sustainable management of soils in the cerrado region.

As conseqüências diretas do manejo inadequado do solo são a erosão, a redução da produtividade e a perda de sua sustentabilidade. Os indicadores da qualidade da estrutura do solo são importantes ferramentas para avaliar a sustentabilidade dos sistemas de manejo. Este estudo objetivou avaliar a agregação de um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico típico sob diferentes sistemas de manejo na região dos cerrados em Sete Lagoas (MG). Dentre os sistemas de manejo estudados, a semeadura direta foi o que apresentou a maior percentagem de agregados na classe > 2 mm, menores nas classes < 2 mm e < 1 mm e maior diâmetro médio geométrico dos agregados na camada superficial (0-5 cm). A matéria orgânica apresentou correlação significativa (P < 0,01) e positiva com o índice de floculação (r = 0,89), diâmetro médio geométrico (r = 0,97), classe de agregados > 2 mm (r = 0,92) e correlação negativa com classes de agregados < 2 (r = -0,92) e < 1 mm (r = -0,93). Esses aspectos ressaltam o efeito benéfico da semeadura direta, contribuindo para o manejo sustentado do solo.

The direct consequences of inadequate soil management are erosion, reduction of productivity and loss of sustainability. The indicators of soil structure quality are important tools for evaluating sustainability of management systems. This study aimed to evaluate the aggregation of typic dystrophic Red Latosol (Oxisol) under different management systems at cerrado region in Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Among the studied management systems, no-tillage presented higher percentage of aggregates in the > 2 mm class, smaller percentage in the < 2 mm and < 1 mm classes, and larger geometric mean diameter of aggregates in the superficial layer (0-5 cm). Organic matter presented positive and significant (P < 0.01) correlation with the flocculation index (R = 0.89), geometric mean diameter (R = 0.97), > 2 mm aggregate class (R = 0.92), and negative correlation with < 2 mm (R = -0.92) and < 1 mm (R = -0.93) aggregate classes. These aspects emphasize the beneficial effect of no-tillage, contributing for a sustainable soil management.
